Supergravitational turbulent thermal convection.

ABSTRACT: High-Rayleigh number convective turbulence is ubiquitous in many natural phenomena and in industries, such as atmospheric circulations, oceanic flows, flows in the fluid core of planets, and energy generations. In this work, we present a novel approach to boost the Rayleigh number in thermal convection by exploiting centrifugal acceleration and rapidly rotating a cylindrical annulus to reach an effective gravity of 60 times Earth's gravity. We show that in the regime where the Coriolis effect is strong, the scaling exponent of Nusselt number versus Rayleigh number exceeds one-third once the Rayleigh number is large enough. The convective rolls revolve in prograde direction, signifying the emergence of zonal flow. The present findings open a new avenue on the exploration of high-Rayleigh number turbulent thermal convection and will improve the understanding of the flow dynamics and heat transfer processes in geophysical and astrophysical flows and other strongly rotating systems.

Mechanism of large-scale flow reversals in turbulent thermal convection.

Project description:It is commonly believed that heat flux passing through a closed thermal convection system is balanced so that the convection system can remain at a steady state. Here, we report a new kind of convective instability for turbulent thermal convection, in which the convective flow stays over a long steady "quiet period" having a minute amount of heat accumulation in the convection cell, followed by a short and intermittent "active period" with a massive eruption of thermal plumes to release the accumulated heat. The rare massive eruption of thermal plumes disrupts the existing large-scale circulation across the cell and resets its rotational direction. A careful analysis reveals that the distribution of the plume eruption amplitude follows the generalized extreme value statistics with an upper bound, which changes with the fluid properties of the convecting medium. The experimental findings have important implications to many closed convection systems of geophysical scale, in which massive eruptions and sudden changes in large-scale flow pattern are often observed.

Effects of rotation on temperature fluctuations in turbulent thermal convection on a hemisphere.

Project description:Rotation is present in many physical and geophysical systems and its role in determining flow properties and modifying turbulent fluctuations is of crucial importance. Here we focus on the role of rotation on temperature fluctuations in turbulent thermal convection. The system used consists of a rotating half soap bubble heated from below. This system has features, curvature and a quasi two dimensional character, which are reminiscent of atmospheric and planetary systems. Our experiments and numerical simulations show that rotation changes the nature of turbulent fluctuations and a new scaling regime is obtained for the temperature field. This change in the scaling behavior of temperature fluctuations, due to rotation, is put forth by studying the so called second moment of temperature differences across different scales. For high enough rotation rates, these temperature differences display a transition from Bolgiano Obukhov scaling to a new scaling regime. This scaling is at odds with expectations from theory, numerics, and experiments in three dimensions, suggesting that the effects of rotation on turbulent flows depend strongly on geometry and spatial dimension.

Turbulent superstructures in Rayleigh-Benard convection.

Project description:Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection displays a large-scale order in the form of rolls and cells on lengths larger than the layer height once the fluctuations of temperature and velocity are removed. These turbulent superstructures are reminiscent of the patterns close to the onset of convection. Here we report numerical simulations of turbulent convection in fluids at different Prandtl number ranging from 0.005 to 70 and for Rayleigh numbers up to 107. We identify characteristic scales and times that separate the fast, small-scale turbulent fluctuations from the gradually changing large-scale superstructures. The characteristic scales of the large-scale patterns, which change with Prandtl and Rayleigh number, are also correlated with the boundary layer dynamics, and in particular the clustering of thermal plumes at the top and bottom plates. Our analysis suggests a scale separation and thus the existence of a simplified description of the turbulent superstructures in geo- and astrophysical settings.

Deep learning in turbulent convection networks.

Project description:We explore heat transport properties of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in horizontally extended systems by using deep-learning algorithms that greatly reduce the number of degrees of freedom. Particular attention is paid to the slowly evolving turbulent superstructures-so called because they are larger in extent than the height of the convection layer-which appear as temporal patterns of ridges of hot upwelling and cold downwelling fluid, including defects where the ridges merge or end. The machine-learning algorithm trains a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) with U-shaped architecture, consisting of a contraction and a subsequent expansion branch, to reduce the complex 3D turbulent superstructure to a temporal planar network in the midplane of the layer. This results in a data compression by more than five orders of magnitude at the highest Rayleigh number, and its application yields a discrete transport network with dynamically varying defect points, including points of locally enhanced heat flux or "hot spots." One conclusion is that the fraction of heat transport by the superstructure decreases as the Rayleigh number increases (although they might remain individually strong), correspondingly implying the increased importance of small-scale background turbulence.

Plume-scale confinement on thermal convection.

Project description:Despite the ubiquity of thermal convection in nature and artificial systems, we still lack a unified formulation that integrates the system's geometry, fluid properties, and thermal forcing to characterize the transition from free to confined convective regimes. The latter is broadly relevant to understanding how convection transports energy and drives mixing across a wide range of environments, such as planetary atmospheres/oceans and hydrothermal flows through fractures, as well as engineering heatsinks and microfluidics for the control of mass and heat fluxes. Performing laboratory experiments in Hele-Shaw geometries, we find multiple transitions that are identified as remarkable shifts in flow structures and heat transport scaling, underpinning previous numerical studies. To unveil the mechanisms of the geometrically controlled transition, we focus on the smallest structure of convection, posing the following question: How free is a thermal plume in a closed system? We address this problem by proposing the degree of confinement [Formula: see text]-the ratio of the thermal plume's thickness in an unbounded domain to the lateral extent of the system-as a universal metric encapsulating all the physical parameters. Here, we characterize four convective regimes different in flow dimensionality and time dependency and demonstrate that the transitions across the regimes are well tied with [Formula: see text]. The introduced metric [Formula: see text] offers a unified characterization of convection in closed systems from the plume's standpoint.

Turbulent convection as a significant hidden provider of magnetic helicity in solar eruptions.

Project description:Solar flares and coronal mass ejections, the primary space weather disturbances affecting the entire heliosphere and near-Earth environment, mainly emanate from sunspot regions harbouring high degrees of magnetic twist. However, it is not clear how magnetic helicity, the quantity for measuring the magnetic twist, is supplied to the upper solar atmosphere via the emergence of magnetic flux from the turbulent convection zone. Here, we report state-of-the-art numerical simulations of magnetic flux emergence from the deep convection zone. By controlling the twist of emerging flux, we find that with the support of convective upflow, the untwisted emerging flux can reach the solar surface without collapsing, in contrast to previous theoretical predictions, and eventually create sunspots. Because of the turbulent twisting of magnetic flux, the produced sunspots exhibit rotation and inject magnetic helicity into the upper atmosphere, amounting to a substantial fraction of injected helicity in the twisted cases that is sufficient to produce flare eruptions. This result indicates that the turbulent convection is responsible for supplying a non-negligible amount of magnetic helicity and potentially contributes to solar flares.

Modulated turbulent convection: a benchmark model for large scale natural flows driven by diurnal heating.

Project description:Our life is strongly affected by turbulent convective flows, driven by time-dependent thermal forcing, especially diurnal heating of the Earth's surface by the Sun. In a laboratory experiment, we investigate their analogues: We study complex and extraordinary properties of turbulent buoyancy driven flows generated due to periodic modulation of the temperature of the plates of a Rayleigh-Bénard cell, with amplitudes both smaller and larger than either the positive or negative mean temperature difference between the top and bottom. We probe the turbulent flow of our working fluid - cryogenic helium gas - using temperature sensors placed in the cell interior and embedded in its plates. We discuss spatial and temporal structure of the heat flow, generalize validity of Nusselt versus Rayleigh number scaling Nu ∝ Ra γ with γ≈1/3 at very high Ra for modulated convection and argue that this system represents a benchmark model which helps us understand the energy budget of ocean currents or weather formation on Earth subject to diurnal Sun heating as well as similar natural flows on Earth-like planets.

Numerical study of entropy generation due to coupled laminar and turbulent mixed convection and thermal radiation in an enclosure filled with a semitransparent medium.

Project description:The effect of radiation on laminar and turbulent mixed convection heat transfer of a semitransparent medium in a square enclosure was studied numerically using the Finite Volume Method. A structured mesh and the SIMPLE algorithm were utilized to model the governing equations. Turbulence and radiation were modeled with the RNG k-ε model and Discrete Ordinates (DO) model, respectively. For Richardson numbers ranging from 0.1 to 10, simulations were performed for Rayleigh numbers in laminar flow (10⁴) and turbulent flow (10⁸). The model predictions were validated against previous numerical studies and good agreement was observed. The simulated results indicate that for laminar and turbulent motion states, computing the radiation heat transfer significantly enhanced the Nusselt number (Nu) as well as the heat transfer coefficient. Higher Richardson numbers did not noticeably affect the average Nusselt number and corresponding heat transfer rate. Besides, as expected, the heat transfer rate for the turbulent flow regime surpassed that in the laminar regime. The simulations additionally demonstrated that for a constant Richardson number, computing the radiation heat transfer majorly affected the heat transfer structure in the enclosure; however, its impact on the fluid flow structure was negligible.

Radiative heating achieves the ultimate regime of thermal convection.

Project description:The absorption of light or radiation drives turbulent convection inside stars, supernovae, frozen lakes, and Earth's mantle. In these contexts, the goal of laboratory and numerical studies is to determine the relation between the internal temperature gradients and the heat flux transported by the turbulent flow. This is the constitutive law of turbulent convection, to be input into large-scale models of such natural flows. However, in contrast with the radiative heating of natural flows, laboratory experiments have focused on convection driven by heating and cooling plates; the heat transport is then severely restricted by boundary layers near the plates, which prevents the realization of the mixing length scaling law used in evolution models of geophysical and astrophysical flows. There is therefore an important discrepancy between the scaling laws measured in laboratory experiments and those used, e.g., in stellar evolution models. Here we provide experimental and numerical evidence that radiatively driven convection spontaneously achieves the mixing length scaling regime, also known as the "ultimate" regime of thermal convection. This constitutes a clear observation of this regime of turbulent convection. Our study therefore bridges the gap between models of natural flows and laboratory experiments. It opens an experimental avenue for a priori determinations of the constitutive laws to be implemented into models of geophysical and astrophysical flows, as opposed to empirical fits of these constitutive laws to the scarce observational data.

Microparticle manipulation using laser-induced thermophoresis and thermal convection flow.

Project description:We demonstrate manipulation of microbeads with diameters from 1.5 to 10 µm and Jurkat cells within a thin fluidic device using the combined effect of thermophoresis and thermal convection. The heat flow is induced by localized absorption of laser light by a cluster of single walled carbon nanotubes, with no requirement for a treated substrate. Characterization of the system shows the speed of particle motion increases with optical power absorption and is also affected by particle size and corresponding particle suspension height within the fluid. Further analysis shows that the thermophoretic mobility (DT) is thermophobic in sign and increases linearly with particle diameter, reaching a value of 8 µm2 s-1 K-1 for a 10 µm polystyrene bead.
