Women in thoracic surgery: social media and the value of mentorship.

ABSTRACT: Social media serves as a tool to fill gaps in current efforts to promote women in cardiothoracic surgery, and, given its global reach, may be a particularly effective modality. Social media has an important role in networking and mentorship, especially for women seeking careers in specialties with relatively sparse female representation, such as cardiothoracic surgery. In addition, social media may facilitate professional interactions, collaboration, growth of online reputations, engagement in continued education, communication of novel research findings, and patient education. Herein, we review the evidence for social media in the networking and mentorship of women in cardiothoracic surgery. Future studies are needed to establish the durability of social media efforts and predictors in its effectiveness in achieving its goals.

Project description:During the last decades, women have been discouraged from entering the medical career and in particular in the surgical specialties. This situation is changing across continents and national and international initiatives are supporting aspiring female surgeons in pursuing the surgical career through mentorship and fellowship programmes. Due to the differences in training programmes, Health Care systems and cultural backgrounds, it's not easy to describe unanimously the pathways and obstacles that junior female thoracic surgeons are experiencing in Europe. The development of female surgical associations, mentorship programmes and national initiatives will further champion the gender equality in this specialty across Europe. During the recent years, the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) has established initiatives like the first ESTS Women in Thoracic Surgery Scientific Session or the annual Women in Thoracic ESTS Reception during the Annual Conference, which are done in an effort to encourage all female colleagues to join this specialty and increase the opportunity to share their experience and meet potential mentors. In this article we will depict the situation in some of the European countries whose female thoracic surgeons have led their way. We aim to give the next generation the examples that can influence women's choice of surgical career, and the possible strategies and initiatives to reduce the gender discrimination within healthcare.

Women in thoracic surgery: Asian perspective.

Project description:There is a significant shortage of surgeons in Japan similar to many other countries. There are 40,267 registered surgeons for Japan Surgical Society, among them 23,723 are board certificated, and 7,246 are certified instructors. A total of 3,207 surgeons are members of The Japanese Associations for Chest Surgery, and 245 (7.6%) are female surgeons. Approximately 8,000 medical students graduate annually with medical license. The number of newly registered residents and surgeons has recently been declining overall in the last two decades, however, the percentage of female physicians entering into surgery has been increasing gradually along with increasing number of female medical students entering the medical schools and colleges. With regard to the issue of gender gap, our country is ranked as low as 121 out of 153 countries according to global gender gap report 2020 by World Economic Forum, dropping down from 110 out of 149 countries from previous report in 2018. As the numbers of female colleagues in our workplace increases, we must consider what we can do to build a better working environment for them that is more inclusive and supports their career. In this review, the brief history of surgery and female surgeons is described as well as current situations of female surgeons today in Japan.

Project description:The thoracic surgery specialty is dominated by male surgeons worldwide, and South America is no exception. The training period to become a thoracic surgeon is long and requires a maximal commitment. Finding a balance between personal life and work is a challenge, especially for female surgeons. Consequently, the scarcity of female surgeons comes as no surprise. However, despite the low number of female thoracic surgeons who can serve as role models, the number of women participating in thoracic surgery residency programs in South America is growing.

Women in thoracic surgery: lesson learned from medical industry partners.

Project description:Medical technology has led to important achievements in surgery as minimally invasive techniques have expanded over the past several years. These innovations have changed the dynamic between industry and surgeons towards a more collaboration relationship forming partnerships important to surgical advancement and technical training opportunities. On this backdrop of transformation is growing awareness of the gender disparity that exists within the thoracic surgery workforce where we have experienced strikingly little change. At the same time, medicine is not unique with its gender disparity. As we have benefited from important partnerships to create excellence in technical innovation, so too may we benefit from drawing upon some of the successes within the medical industry towards achieving gender equity. This paper highlights examples of female leaders in the medical industry surrounding thoracic surgery, who have demonstrated excellence in the advancement and promotion of female thoracic surgeons through fellowships, mentorships or networking.

The national and global impact of "Women in Thoracic Surgery".

Project description:Women in thoracic surgery in the United States are a diverse group with a variety of backgrounds and important expertise. Although the presence of women thoracic surgeons is growing, there remains a large gap, with women making up just under 4% of all board-certified thoracic surgeons in the United States. Currently, 22% of thoracic surgery residents are women, while 3% of Department of Surgery Chairs are women. Significant strides have been made in recent decades to recruit and promote women in thoracic surgery, but clearly there remains more work to be done. The Women in Thoracic Surgery (WTS) organization was created in 1986 for the purpose of facilitating the mutual support and professional advancement of women in the field, and its development and influence as a society has grown exponentially since then. The WTS mission statement includes enhancing the care and education provided to our patients as well as focusing on the development of women thoracic surgeons through mentoring and educational programs. In addition, the WTS creates opportunities to promote the visibility of women, and documents these accomplishments to shape our identity in the world's view. Here, we review some of the landmark achievements of the society and its members as well as goals for the future.

Characterizing the social media footprint of general surgery residency programs.

Project description:BackgroundThe medical community has increasingly embraced social media for a variety of purposes, including trainee education, research dissemination, professional networking, and recruitment of trainees and faculty. Platform choice and usage patterns appear to vary by specialty and purpose, but few studies comprehensively assess programs' social media presence. Prior studies assessed general surgery departments' Twitter use but omitted additional social media platforms and residency-specific accounts.ObjectiveThis study sought to broadly characterize the social media footprint of U.S. general surgery residency programs.MethodsUsing a protocolized search of program websites, social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn), and internet search, cross-sectional data on social media usage in March 2020 were collected for programs, their affiliated departments, their program directors (PDs), and their assistant/associate PDs (APDs).Results318 general surgery residency programs, 313 PDs, and 296 APDs were identified. 47.2% of programs had surgery-specific accounts on ≥1 platform. 40.2% of PDs and APDs had ≥1 account on Twitter and/or LinkedIn. Program type was associated with social media adoption and Twitter utilization, with lower usage among university-affiliated and independent programs (p<0.01).ConclusionsMost general surgery residencies, especially non-university-based programs, lacked any department or residency accounts across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram by March 2020. These findings highlight opportunities for increased social media engagement and act as a pre-pandemic baseline for future investigations of how the shift to virtual trainee education, recruitment, conferences, and clinical care affect social media use.

Social Media for Colorectal Cancer Screening

Project description:Using social media for health promotion is an innovative and emerging approach but remains relatively unexplored in cancer screening. Uptake of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening remains low and standard methods of reaching out are expensive with limited impact. The objective of this study is to conduct a cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) to test the effectiveness of social media messages for CRC screening on screening intention (primary outcome). The results of this trial will be of interest to Cancer Care Ontario and are likely to be taken up by other screening programs looking for innovative and novel ways to increase screening participation. The study results will be easily translatable identifying the most compelling CRC screening messages while the approach can easily be translated to other cancer disease sites with screening programs.

Frequency and Characteristics of Social Media Use among General Surgery Trainees.

Project description:IntroductionWith increased social isolation due to COVID-19, social media has been increasingly adopted for communication, education, and entertainment. We sought to understand the frequency and characteristics of social media usage among general surgery trainees.Materials and methodsGeneral surgery trainees in 15 American training programs were invited to participate in an anonymous electronic survey. The survey included questions about demographics, frequency of social media usage, and perceptions of risks and benefits of social media. Univariate analysis was performed to identify differences between high users of social media (4-7 h per week on at least one platform) and low users (0-3 h or less on all platforms).ResultsOne hundred fifty-seven of 591 (26.6%) trainees completed the survey. Most respondents were PGY3 or lower (75%) and high users of social media (74.5%). Among high users, the most popular platforms were Instagram (85.7%), YouTube (85.1%), and Facebook (83.6%). YouTube and Twitter were popular for surgical education (77.3% and 68.2%, respectively). The most reported benefits of social media were improving patient education and professional networking (85.0%), where high users agreed more strongly about these benefits (P = 0.002). The most reported risks were seeing other residents (42%) or attendings (17%) with unprofessional behavior. High users disagreed more strongly about risks, including observing attendings with unprofessional behavior (P = 0.028).ConclusionsMost respondents were high users of social media, particularly Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. High users incorporated social media into their surgical education while perceiving more benefits and fewer risks of social media.

Social Media Usage by United States Plastic Surgery Subspecialty Fellowship Programs.

Project description:Social media can be a powerful tool for plastic surgery training programs. Previous studies have shown the value social media may have in integrated residency program recruitment and program reputation. These findings may generalize to fellowship programs, but this space has not been comprehensively studied to date. Therefore, this study aims to characterize plastic surgery fellowship programs' social media usage and identify subsequent opportunities for program leadership to generate engagement.MethodsUnited States plastic surgery fellowship programs in four major subspecialties (hand, microsurgery, craniomaxillofacial, and aesthetic) were identified and evaluated for social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Platform-specific parameters were collected and statistically analyzed in aggregate.ResultsThere were a total of 25 Instagram accounts, four Facebook accounts, and three Twitter accounts across all investigated subspecialties. Hand surgery had the greatest social media presence on Instagram (19.5%) and Twitter (3.4%). Microsurgery had the greatest presence on Facebook (4.7%). Between 2015 and 2022, Instagram was the platform with the greatest increase in adoption by fellowship programs. Geographically, microsurgery and craniomaxillofacial accounts were primarily owned by Midwest programs (66.7%, 100%), and aesthetic primarily by programs in the South (83.3%). Number of Instagram posts and followers were not significantly correlated with hospital reputation (P = 0.12, P = 0.63).ConclusionsSocial media is underutilized by plastic surgery fellowship programs. While Instagram metrics such as posts and followers are not correlated with hospital reputation, the skewed distributions of fellowship accounts, both geographically and across platforms, represent areas of potential growth.

The value and use of social media as communication tool in the plant sciences.

Project description:Social media now complements many parts of our lives. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and many other social networking sites allow users to share and interact with online content and to connect with like-minded people. Its strengths - rapid dissemination and amplification of content and the ability to lead informal conversations - make it a powerful tool to use in a professional context. This commentary explains the overall concept of social media and offers suggestions on usage and possible types of scientific content. It advises researchers on the potential benefits and how to take a strategic approach towards building a social media presence. It also presents examples of effective social media use within the plant science community. Common reasons for scientists to not engage with social media include the fear of appearing unprofessional, posting something wrong or being misunderstood, or a lack of confidence in their computer skills. With the rapid changes in academic publishing, dissemination and science communication, as well as the rise of 'altmetrics' to track online engagement with scientific content, digital literacy will become an essential skill in a scientist's tool kit.
