Complete mitochondrial genome of Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus (Osteichthyes: Gastromyzontidae).

ABSTRACT: Pseudogastromyzon fasciatus belonging to the family Gastromyzontidae is a good model for phylogeny and zoogeography research. The complete mitochondrial genome of P. fasciatus was sequenced in this study. The genome sequence is 16,563 bp in length, comprising 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and one control region. Overall base composition is 29.70% A, 25.16% T, 16.53% G, and 28.60% C. The result of phylogenetic analysis indicates that P. fasciatus mitogenome is close to that of P. myersi.

In the present paper, the sequenced mitochondrial genome of P. changtingensis is of 16573 bp in length, and encodes 13 typical protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and one control region. The result of phylogenetic analysis demonstrates that P. changtingensis is close to that of P. fasciatus.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Vanmanenia hainanensis (Cypriniformes: Gastromyzontidae).

Project description:Vanmanenia hainanensis Chen & Zheng 1980 is endemic to Hainan Island, China. The complete mitogenome of the species was sequenced in this study. It was 16,555 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 1 control region. The base composition was 29.5% A, 25.4% T, 16.7% G, and 28.4% C. All genes were encoded on the H-strand except for ND6 and 8 tRNA genes, located on the l-strand. Phylogenetic analysis based on 13 protein-coding genes indicated that the genus Vanmanenia did not form monophyly and it had the closest relationship with Formosania. This study aimed at providing useful genetic information for future studies on taxonomy, phylogeny, and evolution of Vanmanenia species.

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Vanmanenia stenosoma (Teleostei: Gastromyzontidae).

Project description:Vanmanenia stenosoma belongs to the order Cypriniformes, and it is a typical torrent loach in China. In this study, we successfully determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of V. stenosoma (type species of Vanmanenia), which is 16,560 base pairs (bp) and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a putative control region. The genome has the same gene order as that found in other species of the family Gastromyzontidae. This suggests those genera share a common ancestral mitogenome. Nevertheless, phylogenetic reconstructions did not support the monophyly of the genus Vanmanenia.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Neolissochilus stracheyi (Osteichthyes:Cyprinidae).

Project description:Neolissochilus stracheyi Day 1871 is a rare specie of fish inhabit clear forest streams and rivers. In order to discuss the phylogenetic position of N. stracheyi, the mitochondrial genome was obtained by sequencing. The genome was 16,587 bp in length with an accession number OM203155. The AT contents were 56.59%. The location and composition of genes are consistent with published Cyprinids containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 1 main non-coding regions. Sequence analysis showed that the mitochondrial genome of N. stracheyi has high sequence homology with other cyprinid fishes. Phylogenetic tree results showed that N. stracheyi is most closely related to Neolissochilus heterostomus. The mitochondrial sequence is of great significance for fish conservation, taxonomic status and resource exploitation.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Erromyzon sinensis (Cypriniformes: Gastromyzontidae) and phylogenetic implications.

Project description:In this study, we first determined the complete mitochondrial genome of Erromyzon sinensis. It was 16,560 bp in length and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, a light strand origin of replication (OL), and a control region (D-loop). In addition, its overall nucleotide composition was 29.4% of A, 16.8% of G, 25.7% of T, and 28.1% of C, with a total of 55.1% A + T content. Phylogenetic analysis based on 13 protein-coding genes revealed that E. sinensis had the closest relationship with E. kalotaenia. Our study aimed at providing basic information for molecular systematics and conservation genetics research of E. sinensis.

The genome sequence is 16,512 bp in length, comprising 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and one control region. Overall base composition is 26.46% A, 25.05% T, 17.22% G, and 31.27% C. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that L. alata was close to L. guentheri and L. microptera, and each genus in the family Triglidae was monophyletic. This study can provide valuable information for future evolutionary studies on L. alata and Triglidae.

Seven fish complete mitochondrial genomes of the Gastromyzontidae in Southern China (Teleostei: Cypriniformes).

Project description:Family of Gastromyzontidae originates from China and Southeast Asia, which is widely distributed in the southern part of the Yangtze River. In this study, we sequenced seven fish complete mitogenomes from three of all 18 genera in the Gastromyzontidae on the Illumina HiSeq platform. Lengths of seven complete mitochondrial genome sequences varied from 16,554 to 16,574 bp, with an AT bias of 53.6-54.9%. Maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree was reconstructed using the connected protein sequences of 13 protein-coding genes of 34 species of fish. The phylogeny revealed that the genera Gastromyzon, Sewellia, and Erromyzon were monophyletic, and other genera Beaufortia, Vanmanenia, Formosania, and Pseudogastromyzon were paraphyletic or polyphyletic. Phylogeny corrected the taxonomic status of Metahomaloptera omeiensis, which should be categorized under the family of Gastromyzontidae rather than Balitoridae, denoting the significance of this study to the overall fisheries research.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Trachidermus fasciatus (Scorpaeniformes: Cottidae) and phylogenetic studies of Cottidae.

Project description:Trachidermus fasciatus is a small catadromous fish and has been listed as a second class state protected aquatic animal since 1988 in China due to the declines in its abundance. We describe the complete mitogenome of T. fasciatus in this study. The mitogenome is 16,536 nucleotides long and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and two main non-coding regions. The overall base composition includes C (30%), A (26.3%), T (25.5%), and G (18.2%). Moreover, the 13 PCGs encode 3800 amino acids in total, all the PCGs use the initiation codon ATG except COI uses GTG. Most of them have TAA or TAG as the stop codon, except COII, ND4 and Cytb use an incomplete stop codon T. The phylogenetic tree based on the neighbour joining method was constructed to provide relationship within Cottidae, which could be a useful basis for management of this species.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the Chinese noodlefish Leucosoma chinensis and phylogenetic analysis of Salangidae (Osteichthyes: Osmeriformes).

Project description:In the present study, we obtained the first complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Leucosoma (Salanx) chinensis. It was 16,595 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and a non-coding control region. The nucleotide composition was A (23.1%), T (25.2%), G (20.0%) and C (31.8%), and the A + T content (48.3%) was a little lower than G + C content (51.80%). Phylogenetic analysis of 10 species of Salangidae identified three major clades. These results may facilitate the future genetic research of L. chinensis and Salangidae.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the parrotfish Calotomus japonicus (Osteichthyes: Scaridae) with implications based on the phylogenetic position.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome sequence was determined for a specimen of Calotomus japonicus, a temperate parrotfish endemic to coastal East Asia. It was compared phylogenetically with previously published partial sequences from this species and other parrotfishes. The obtained tree indicated that the three cytb sequences of C. japonicus from a recent molecular study (LC068806-8) probably resulted from introgression through intergeneric hybridization, or possibly from sample confusion. Taking the presently obtained mitogenome as representative of C. japonicus, the species most closely related to this one among congeners is C. zonarchus, which is endemic to the Hawaiian islands.
