A new species of Princaxelia from Shinkai Seep Field, Mariana Trench (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Pardaliscidae).

ABSTRACT: A new pardaliscid amphipod, Princaxelia marianaensis sp. nov., is described from a single female captured at the Shinkai Seep Field, Mariana Trench, from a depth of 5,689-5,683 m. A key to species of Princaxelia is provided. This is the first species of Princaxelia to be described from the Mariana Trench, and the second report of this genus from this region.

The deepest mitochondrial genome sequenced from Mariana Trench Hirondellea gigas (Amphipoda).

Project description:Hirondellea gigas is an amphipod that is a dominant animal resident living in the Challenger Deep (∼11,000m depth) of the Mariana Trench, which is the world deepest point in the ocean. Here we report a nearly complete mitochondrial genome of H. gigas, the world deepest mitogenome. The genome consists of two contigs with lengths of 8,603 bp and 6,984 bp, respectively, and it includes 13 complete protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 21 tRNA genes. The ends of both contigs are highly repetitive and AT rich. The gene order of H. gigas is similar to another amphipod (Onisimus nanseni) in the same superfamily, Lysianassoidea. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Lysianassoidea is grouped with Gammaroidea and Calliopioidea in the same clade. Our result also suggested that the H. gigas collected from Izu-Bonin Trench and Japan Trench are indeed the same species as those from the Mariana Trench. These results will contribute to a better understanding of the phylogeny of amphipod and other hadal species.

A new species of Melita from Japan (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Melitidae).

Project description:A new brackish-water species of melitid amphipod, Melita choshigawaensis, from the Choshigawa River, Mie Prefecture, Japan, is named and described. Melita choshigawaensissp. n. is distinguished from the most similar M. shimizui (Uéno, 1940) by having an elongate and weakly arched male uropod 3, and a deep and strongly hooked anterior lobe of the coxa on the female's pereopod 6. Nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of M. choshigawaensis and M. shimizui support divergence at the species level. A key to the Japanese species of Melita is provided.

Project description:Ampithoidae is a family of marine Amphipoda with approximately 230 species, belonging to 16 genera. The family has a worldwide distribution as algal dwellers. So far only five species are known from New Zealand. Recent collections and examination of historic collection material added two new species, which are described herein. An overview of and a key to the New Zealand Ampithoidae is provided.

A New Protocruzia Species (Ciliophora: Protocruziida) Isolated From the Mariana Trench Area.

Project description:A new species of Protocruzia, isolated from the deep-sea Pacific Ocean (>3,000-m depth) in the vicinity of the Mariana Trench, is described based on morphological and molecular data. The systematic status of the ciliate genus Protocruzia has long been highly ambiguous, and Protocruzia species have been assigned to an independent class until recently. In the present study, we described Protocruzia marianaensis sp. n. as a small (25-32 × 14-17 μm in vivo) drop-shaped ciliate, with longitudinal furrows along the ciliary rows on the right side, six adoral membranelles, eight somatic kineties, and one macronucleus comprising 7-11 nuclear globules. Phylogenetic analyses inferred from small subunit rRNA gene sequences revealed that seven Protocruzia species in the phylogenetic tree formed a fully supported clade representing an independent class. Protocruzia marianaensis sp. n. was established to be most closely related to Protocruzia adhaerens, with a sequence similarity of 96.64%, and was found to be able to survive at both atmospheric pressure and hydrostatic pressure of 320 bar, thereby indicating effective barotolerance.

Project description:A new deep-sea epimeriid, Epimeria abyssalis is described from the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench, in the northwestern Pacific. This species differs from its congeners in having a short rostrum and a telson with deep and narrow Y-shaped excavation. Epimeria abyssalis is the deepest recorded Epimeria species. A key to the north Pacific species of Epimeria is provided.

Project description:A new subterranean species of pseudocrangonyctid amphipod, Pseudocrangonyx daejeonensissp. n. is described from the interstitial waters in Daejeon, Korea. Pseudocrangonyx daejeonensissp. n. is distinguished from three morphologically similar congeners, P. coreanus Uéno, 1966, P. febras Sidorov, 2009, and P. gudariensis Tomikawa & Sato, 2016, by the characteristics of antenna 1, antenna 2, mandible, gnathopod 2, pleopods, uropods 1-2, and telson. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear 28S rRNA and histone H3, and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S rRNA genes revealed that P. daejeonensis is a sister species of the unnamed Pseudocrangonyx sp. 3 inhabiting central Japan.

Aroui minusetosus, a new species of Scopelocheiridae from Korea (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Lysianassoidea).

Project description:A new species, Aroui minusetosussp. n., is recorded from Korean waters with detailed description and illustrations. A new key to all known Aroui is provided. The Korean material of this scopelocheirid is readily assigned to the genus Aroui by the presence of long and distally barbed setae on the outer plate of maxilla 2. This new species is distinguished from congeners by ventrally smooth coxae 1-3 and a setose posteroventral margin of coxa 4, the subchelate gnathopod 2 having a row of four robust setae on its posterior margin (including an elongate single locking seta), and the setation of all appendages which is less dense than in other species. This is the first record of scopelocheirid amphipods from Korean waters.

Melitapanda, a new species of Melitidae (Crustacea, Amphipoda) from Japan.

Project description:A new intertidal species of the melitid amphipod, Melitapanda, from the Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, is identified and described. Melitapanda sp. nov. differs from the similar M.koreana and M.nagatai by its black-and-white body color, well-developed anterodistal projection of the male gnathopod 1 propodus, and telson armature. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear 28S rRNA and mitochondrial COI genes support that M.panda sp. nov. is closely related to M.koreana and M.nagatai.

A new species of the genus Hyalella (Crustacea, Amphipoda) from northern Mexico.

Project description:A new species, Hyalella tepehuana sp. nov., is described from Durango state, Mexico, a region where studies on Hyalella have been few. This species differs from most species of the North and South American genus Hyalella in the number of setae on the inner plate of maxilla 1 and maxilla 2, characters it shares with Hyalella faxoni Stebbing, 1903. Nevertheless, H. faxoni, from the Volcan Barva in Costa Rica, lacks a dorsal process on pereionites 1 and 2. Also, this new species differs from other described Hyalella species in Mexico by the shape of the palp on maxilla 1, the number of setae on the uropods, and the shape of the telson.
