Project description:Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected millions of people worldwide with far-reaching socio-economic implications in society. The adoption of preventive practices by the public remains the mainstay in reducing the spread of COVID-19 but there is a dearth of validated tools to assess such infection prevention practices related to pandemics. This study was conducted to develop and validate a questionnaire for the assessment of preventive practices against COVID-19 in the general population. It was done following a standardized protocol involving questionnaire development through literature review, focused group discussions, in-depth interviews, expert opinion, and pre-testing. This was followed by the validation of the questionnaire through a cross-sectional survey on 108 individuals from diverse backgrounds in New Delhi, India in July 2020. Exploratory factor analysis was used to evaluate construct validity. Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The developed questionnaire for assessing preventive practices consists of two sections: the first section of 18 items to evaluate preventive practices and the second section of 19 items for assessing various reasons for deficiencies in the preventive practices. The first section has good content validity (CVR = 0.81 and S-CVI/Av = 0.97) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient 0.82). Thus, this questionnaire is a valid and reliable tool for the comprehensive assessment of preventive practices and barriers related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be useful in assessing the preparedness of the public and will be helpful to policymakers in designing appropriate interventions for protection against COVID-19.

Project description:BackgroundThe new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by a virus in the coronavirus family called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Due to lack of effective treatment, the major way to breakdown the disease transmission is by application of preventive measures. For this, a preventive practice questionnaire was used to assess the preventive practice during COVID-19. A definite advantage of this questionnaire is its ability to identify individual level preventive practices. The objective of the study was to validate the Nepali version of Questionnaire to assess preventive practices against the COVID-19 pandemic in the General population.MethodsA web-based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2022 to April 2023 using preventive practices against the COVID-19 pandemic questionnaire and was conducted among 351 respondents. The sensitivity and specificity of the questionnaire were calculated for validation. The best cutoff point for the Nepalese version of the questionnaire was identified and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was calculated.ResultsThe overall prevalence of good preventive practices was 90.6%. The best cutoff points for the Nepali version of the questionnaire were 93% sensitivity and 67% specificity, respectively at a cutoff level of 47/48. The area under the curve was 0.859. Thus, the Nepalese version of the questionnaire concerning preventive practices during the COVID-19 pandemic in the general population had an accuracy of 85.9% (95% CI 0.757-0.961, p = 0.001).ConclusionThe Nepalese version of the questionnaire on preventive practices during the COVID-19 pandemic in the general population can be successfully used as a survey tool. These findings might help to detect appropriate adherence to preventive practices can be achieved in busy outpatient departments. Detecting adherence to preventive practices may help local health authorities and policymakers in identifying specific populations for future awareness campaigns during infectious disease outbreaks.

Project description:BackgroundAttitudes towards medication can affect treatment outcomes and adherence through mechanisms such as placebo and nocebo effects. Questionnaires assessing both negative and positive attitudes towards medication in general, which can be used across a variety of settings and in both patient and non-patient samples, are however lacking. To fill this gap, we developed and validated the General Attitude towards Medication Questionnaire (GAMQ).MethodsItems were selected and adapted from existing questionnaires by a group of experts. Validation of the original Dutch version took place in 4 samples: 2 recruited from the general population (n = 508; n = 279) and 2 patient samples (patients with rheumatoid arthritis, n = 121; patients with atopic dermatitis, n = 70). We evaluated the psychometric properties of the GAMQ by determining the factor structure and its stability across samples, internal consistency, and convergent validity.ResultsThe GAMQ contains 6 positive and 6 negatively worded items. A factor structure was observed with three subscales, representing 'Trust in medication', 'Concerns about medication', and 'Reluctance to use medication'. The fit of the factor structure was satisfactory across samples, considering classic cut-offs, with an adequate or close to adequate fit. The total scale showed good internal consistency, good convergent validity with related scales (i.e., Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire - General and a single medication attitude scale), and concurrent validity as reflected in associations with expectations about pain- and itch-relieving medication. It was not consistently or strongly associated with demographic or health-related characteristics.ConclusionsThe newly developed GAMQ showed satisfactory psychometric properties in a variety of populations, although limitations should be considered. The GAMQ is the first scale to assess both positive and negative attitudes towards medication in general, providing indicators of Trust, Concerns, and Reluctance regarding medication. The scale may be an informative measure for predicting treatment outcomes and adherence, as well as placebo and nocebo effects in diverse samples.

Appropriate statistical tests were applied to study the association between the various sociodemographic variables and different behaviours.ResultsA total of 1079 responses were analysed for the study. Almost half of the participants feared contracting the COVID-19 infection. Overall, female participants, elderly people (more than 60 years of age) and urban dwellers reported a greater fear in the survey. More than half of the participants (53.39%) reported significant difficulties due to home confinement. People have become more inclined to adopt healthy lifestyles. There are mixed responses in the area of following preventive practices.ConclusionPeople have a significant amount of fear and anxiety related to the pandemic, leading to several social and behavioural changes that might have a considerable impact on their everyday lives.

Project description:BackgroundDisordered thinking is a condition that can manifest in not only clinical cases (e.g., psychotic disorders), but also the wider general population. However, there is no current method to measure the specific cognitive processes experienced during such a condition. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a new self-report measure, the Disorganised Thoughts Scale (DTS), that can assess disorganised thinking in the general population.MethodsTo achieve this aim, a survey was developed and shared online with four independent samples, including a sample of Australians in the general population (N = 321) and three samples (N = 200 each) that were controlled for their substance use (i.e., frequent alcohol and cannabis use; non-frequent substance use). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and reliability analyses, were used to test the internal validity, whilst correlational analyses were implemented to examine the external validity.ResultsThe exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure (10 items each) measuring Positive thought disorder (i.e., accelerated, uncontrollable, and incongruent thinking) and Negative thought disorder (i.e., inhibited, disjointed, and disorientated thinking). This internal structure was confirmed with subsequent confirmatory factor and reliability analyses (α = 0.90 to 0.97) in the three substance-controlled groups. Concurrent validity was also supported, as the DTS exhibited strong correlations with established measures of general cognitive difficulties, specific self-regulatory dysfunctions, and psychopathological symptomology. Finally, the measure was also shown to be significantly higher in cohorts who exhibited a higher degree of psychological distress and who frequently used substances (i.e., alcohol and cannabis).ConclusionsOverall, this study provided preliminary evidence to suggest that the DTS is a sound measure of disorganised thought that is linked to psychopathology and substance use in non-clinical populations. The measure could be used in future research which seeks to better understand how thinking effects, and is affected by, various psychological conditions.

Project description:We introduce a compartmental epidemic model to describe the spread of COVID-19 within a population, assuming that a vaccine is available, but vaccination is not mandatory. The model takes into account vaccine hesitancy and the refusal of vaccination by individuals, which take their decision on vaccination based on both the present and past information about the spread of the disease. Theoretical analysis and simulations show that voluntary vaccination can certainly reduce the impact of the disease but is unable to eliminate it. We also demonstrate how the information-related parameters affect the dynamics of the disease. In particular, vaccine hesitancy and refusal are better contained in case of widespread information coverage and short-term memory. Finally, the possible impact of seasonality on the spread of the disease is investigated.

Project description:The shortage of recently approved vaccines against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has highlighted the need for evidence-based tools to prioritize healthcare resources for people at higher risk of severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Although age has been identified as the most important risk factor (particularly for mortality), the contribution of underlying comorbidities is often assessed using a pre-defined list of chronic conditions. Furthermore, the count of individual risk factors has limited applicability to population-based "stratify-and-shield" strategies. We aimed to develop and validate a COVID-19 risk stratification system that allows allocating individuals of the general population into four mutually-exclusive risk categories based on multivariate models for severe COVID-19, a composite of hospital admission, transfer to intensive care unit (ICU), and mortality among the general population. The model was developed using clinical, hospital, and epidemiological data from all individuals among the entire population of Catalonia (North-East Spain; 7.5 million people) who experienced a COVID-19 event (i.e., hospitalization, ICU admission, or death due to COVID-19) between March 1 and September 15, 2020, and validated using an independent dataset of 218,329 individuals with COVID-19 confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), who were infected after developing the model. No exclusion criteria were defined. The final model included age, sex, a summary measure of the comorbidity burden, the socioeconomic status, and the presence of specific diagnoses potentially associated with severe COVID-19. The validation showed high discrimination capacity, with an area under the curve of the receiving operating characteristics of 0.85 (95% CI 0.85-0.85) for hospital admissions, 0.86 (0.86-0.97) for ICU transfers, and 0.96 (0.96-0.96) for deaths. Our results provide clinicians and policymakers with an evidence-based tool for prioritizing COVID-19 healthcare resources in other population groups aside from those with higher exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and frontline workers.

Project description:BackgroundThis study reports the reliability and validity of a questionnaire designed to measure the time from detection of a breast cancer to arrival at a cancer hospital, as well as the factors that are associated with delay.MethodsThe proposed questionnaire measures dates for estimation of the patient, provider and total intervals from detection to treatment, as well as factors that could be related to delays: means of problem identification (self-discovery or screening), the patients' initial interpretations of symptoms, patients' perceptions of delay, reasons for delay in initial seeking of medical care, barriers perceived to have caused provider delay, prior utilisation of health services, use of alternative medicine, cancer-screening knowledge and practices, and aspects of the social network of support for medical attention. The questionnaire was assembled with consideration for previous research results from a review of the literature and qualitative interviews of patients with breast cancer symptoms. It was tested for face validity, content validity, reliability, internal consistency, convergent and divergent validity, sensitivity and specificity in a series of 4 tests with 602 patients.ResultsThe instrument showed good face and content validity. It allowed discrimination of patients with different types and degrees of delay, had quite good reliability for the time intervals (with no significant mean differences between the two measurements), and fairly good internal consistency of the item dimensions (with Cronbach's alpha values for each dimension between 0.42 and 0.85). Finally, sensitivity and specificity were 74.68% and 48.81%, respectively.ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first published report of the development and validation of a questionnaire for estimation of breast cancer delay and its correlated factors. It is a valid, reliable and sensitive instrument.

Project description:BackgroundThe impact of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) on the quality of life of patients has been neglected in research studies worldwide. The few reported studies have used non-specific questionnaires for the disease, which represents a limitation since generic instruments may not address specific aspects of the disease, compromising the evaluation of its real impact. The aim of this paper is to describe the development and the initial validation of an instrument for evaluating the impact of CL, named the Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Impact Questionnaire.MethodologyThe formulation and validation of the instrument consisted of the following steps: (1) literature review; (2) conceptual framework construction and initial item generation; (3) tool analysis by health professionals (experts); (4) tool evaluation performed by the patients; and (5) a pilot study with 100 patients with localized CL, evaluated at a reference ambulatory facility in Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The structure of the proposed instrument was analyzed using hierarchical cluster analysis (ICLUST).ResultsTwenty-seven items were initially proposed by the researchers to compose the questionnaire. Content validity (evaluates if the instrument fully assesses the construct of interest) was evaluated by the panel of experts, while face validity (evaluates how potential participants interpret the items) was evaluated by the target population. In this step, some items were excluded, reformulated and/or included. After evaluating a factorial structure of the items in accordance with the cluster analysis, we assembled a questionnaire with 25 items (alpha = 0.86), with high reliability and homogeneity, which address the following: 1) the general impact of the disease (alpha = 0.91, beta = 0.67) and 2) the evaluation of the perception about the treatment and health services (alpha = 0.72, beta = 0.51).ConclusionsThe Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Impact Questionnaire, developed with contributions from patients and experts, was confirmed, in this first validation, as a useful and reliable instrument.
