Metasychis varicollaris sp. nov. and report of Metasychis gotoi (Maldanidae, Annelida) from the China Seas.

ABSTRACT: Polychaete species are widely distributed throughout Indo-Pacific and European waters. We collected Metasychis specimens from the China Seas to report on Metasychis varicollaris sp. n. and Metasychis gotoi (Izuka, 1902) in greater detail. Geographic analysis of the potential distribution areas of M. gotoi indicates that it may be found in most coastal areas of China. The newly discovered species, M. varicollaris and M. gotoi, have an overlapping distribution in the northern South China Sea. Metasychis varicollaris sp. n. is characterized by a crenulated cephalic rim, complete collar on chaetiger 1, a packet-shaped anal funnel, and a spirally-fringed notochaetae with spiral pectinate bands imbricated over the main shaft. Our study provides a taxonomic key to all species of Metasychis.

Podarkeopsischinensis sp. nov. (Annelida, Hesionidae) from southeastern China.

Project description:Podarkeopsischinensissp. nov. (Annelida, Hesionidae) is described based on specimens collected from the coast of southeast China. It is the first Podarkeopsis species described from the Indo-Pacific, although there are already nine valid Podarkeopsis species known from other parts of the world. This new species can be distinguished from the other Podarkeopsis species in having a palpostyle as long as the palpophore and double aciculae in both notopodia and neuropodia, and in bearing bifid furcate chaetae which have a smooth base on the shorter tine. A phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated sequences of five gene fragments (COI, 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, and histone H3) from 18 specimens of P.chinensissp. nov. showed that they formed a monophyletic clade that is sister to P.levifuscina. K2P genetic distances indicated that the four gene fragments (COI, 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, and 28S rRNA) of P.chinensissp. nov. diverged from the corresponding sequences of the closest related species of Podarkeopsis in GenBank and BOLD Systems by 21.1-27.5%, 20.3-23.1%, 0.1-0.2%, and 2.1-3.2%. An identification key is provided for species in the genus Podarkeopsis.

Description of Hemienchytraeus wuhanensis sp. nov. (Annelida, Clitellata, Enchytraeidae) from central China, with comments on species records of Hemienchytraeus from China.

Project description:Hemienchytraeus wuhanensis sp. nov. is described from hardwood forest soil in Wuhan, China. This moderately sized enchytraeid species of 6-9 mm body length is characterized by: (1) an oesophageal appendage with tertiary branches, (2) three pairs of secondary pharyngeal gland lobes in V, VI, VII, (3) five pairs preclitellar nephridia, from 5/6 to 9/10, (4) dorsal vessel originating in clitellar segments, (5) a girdle-shaped clitellum, (6) a relatively small male reproductive apparatus without seminal vesicle, and (7) spermathecae that extend to VI-VII. DNA barcodes of paratype specimens of the new species are provided. Previous species records of Hemienchytraeus from China are critically discussed.

Black spicules from a new interstitial opheliid polychaete Thoracophelia minuta sp. nov. (Annelida: Opheliidae).

Project description:The phylum Annelida exhibits high morphological diversity coupled with its extensive ecological diversity, and the process of its evolution has been an attractive research subject for many researchers. Its representatives are also extensively studied in fields of ecology and developmental biology and important in many other biology related disciplines. The study of biomineralisation is one of them. Some annelid groups are well known to form calcified tubes but other forms of biomineralisation are also known. Herein, we report a new interstitial annelid species with black spicules, Thoracophelia minuta sp. nov., from Yoichi, Hokkaido, Japan. Spicules are minute calcium carbonate inclusions found across the body and in this new species, numerous black rod-like inclusions of calcium-rich composition are distributed in the coelomic cavity. The new species can be distinguished from other known species of the genus by these conspicuous spicules, shape of branchiae and body formula. Further, the new species' body size is apparently smaller than its congeners. Based on our molecular phylogenetic analysis using 18S and 28S sequences, we discuss the evolutionary significance of the new species' spicules and also the species' progenetic origin.

Rhynchospioaciliata sp. nov., a new spionid species (Annelida, Spionidae) from the Korea Strait.

Project description:A new spionid polychaete, Rhynchospioaciliata sp. nov., was discovered in the fine sandy sediments of an intertidal habitat from Korean waters. The new species is considered a simultaneous hermaphrodite, but no brooding embryos were found in any of the specimens collected in this study. This species is unique in the absence of ciliation in the anteriormost chaetigers. Rhynchospioaciliata sp. nov. is morphologically most similar to Rhynchospiofoliosa Imajima, 1991 from Japan in having an elevation on the prostomium, conspicuously large and foliaceous branchiae, and intersegmental lateral pouches. However, the new species differs from the latter by the following characteristics: (1) large and lanceolate notopodial postchaetal lamellae of chaetiger 1, (2) transverse ciliated bands and ciliation on the inner branchiae absent in anteriormost chaetigers, and (3) pygidium with one pair of ventral cirri and numerous elongated dorsolateral cirri. Detailed description and illustrations of the new species are provided with molecular information on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA), nuclear 18S rDNA, and 28S rDNA.

Paraeutypella guizhouensis gen. et sp. nov. and Diatrypella longiasca sp. nov. (Diatrypaceae) from China.

Project description:BackgroundIn this study, we introduce a novel genus, Paraeutypella, of the family Diatrypaceae comprising three species viz. Paraeutypella guizhouensis sp. nov. and P. citricola (basionym: Eutypella citricola) and P. vitis (basionym: Sphaeria vitis). Diatrypella longiasca sp. nov. is also introduced, which forms a distinct clade in Diatrypella sensu stricto. The discovery of this new genus will contribute to expanding the knowledge and taxonomic framework of Diatrypaceae (Xylariales).New informationGeneric delimitations in Diatrypaceae are unsettled because the phylogeny has yet to be resolved using extensive taxon sampling and sequencing of ex-type cultures. During an investigation of xylarialean fungi, we collected eutypella-like fungi which is distinct from Eutypella sensu stricto in our phylogenetic analyses (ITS and β-tubulin), thus, introduced as Paraeutypella guizhouensis gen. et sp. nov.. Paraeutypella is characterised by having 4-25 perithecia in a stroma each with 3-6 sulcate, long ostiolar necks. Paraeutypella citricola comb. nov. (basionym: Eutypella citricola) is introduced on Acer sp. from China. Diatrypella longiasca sp. nov. is introduced as a new species in Diatrypella sensu stricto. which has 2-5 ascomata per stroma and long ascospores, unusual when compared to other Diatrypella species and distinct phylogenetically.

Proceraea exoryxae sp. nov. (Annelida, Syllidae, Autolytinae), the first known polychaete miner tunneling into the tunic of an ascidian.

Project description:While studying organisms living in association with the solitary tunicate Phallusia nigra (Ascidiacea, Ascidiidae) from a shallow fringing reef at Zeytouna Beach (Egyptian Red Sea), one of the collected ascidians showed peculiar perforations on its tunic. Once dissected, the perforations revealed to be the openings of a network of galleries excavated in the inner tunic (atrium) by at least six individuals of a polychaetous annelid. The worms belonged to the Autolytinae (Syllidae), a subfamily that is well known to include specialized predators and/or symbionts, mostly associated with cnidarians. The Red Sea worms are here described as Proceraea exoryxae sp. nov., which are anatomically distinguished by the combination of simple chaetae only in anterior chaetigers, and a unique trepan with 33 teeth in one outer ring where one large tooth alternates with one medium-sized tricuspid tooth, and one inner ring with small teeth located just behind the large teeth. Male and female epitokes were found together with atokous individuals within galleries. Proceraea exoryxae sp. nov. constitutes the first known miner in the Autolytinae and the second species in this taxon known to live symbiotically with ascidians. The implications of finding this specialized parasite are discussed considering that Phallusia nigra has been introduced worldwide, in tropical and sub-tropical ecosystems, where it has the potential of becoming invasive.

Fomitiporellacrystallina sp. nov. (Basidiomycota, Hymenochaetales) from China.

Project description:BackgroundFomitiporella is an important genus of wood-decaying fungi. Many new species were revealed in the last five years, based on morphological characters and molecular data. During a study on the taxonomy of Fomitiporella, two specimens from China were investigated, which have morphological characteristics close to Fomitiporella. After morphological examinations and phylogenetic analyses, a new species was confirmed to be a member of the Fomitiporella clade.New informationFomitiporellacrystallina sp. nov. is described and illustrated as a new species, based on morphological characters and molecular evidence. It has perennial, irregular, pileate basidiocarps, an indistinct subiculum (ultrathin to almost lacking), lack of any kind of setae, has brownish, thick-walled basidiospores and causes a white rot. A molecular study, based on the combined ITS (internal transcribed spacer region) and nrLSU (the large nuclear ribosomal RNA subunit) dataset, supports the new species in Fomitiporella. The differences between the new species and phylogenetically related and morphologically similar species are discussed. A key to species with pileate to effused-reflexed basidiocarps of Fomitiporella is given.

Macrophominavaccinii sp. nov. causing blueberry stem blight in China.

Project description:Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) have been widely cultivated in China because of their nutritional benefits and economic value. Blueberry stem blight has become one of the most severe diseases influencing blueberry productivity and quality in China. In this study, eight fungal isolates were obtained from twenty stem blight lesions of blueberry collected in Nanping, Fujian province, China. Asexual stage was observed after inducing sporulation, the morphology of which agrees with Macrophomina in the black, smooth, hard sclerotia and ellipsoid to obovoid, smooth hyaline conidia with apical sheath. Furthermore, DNA sequences of concatenated ITS, tef1-α, TUB, and ACT loci indicated that these isolates belong to a novel fungal species. The distinguishing morphological characteristics, such as the wider conidia and larger conidiomata pycnidial, also support its new status. Thus a novel fungus, Macrophominavaccinii, was described in this study. Pathogenicity tests indicated that M.vaccinii could cause stem blight of blueberry.

Lacydoniidae (Annelida) Off the Coast of North-eastern Japan: A Description of Lacydonia japonica sp. nov.

Project description:Lacydonia japonica sp. nov. (Annelida, Lacydoniidae) is described based on material found in sediments collected off the Pacific coast of northern Honshu, Japan, at depths of 262 m and 407 m. The sediments were obtained by a remotely operated vehicle equipped with a suction sampler during a Tohoku Ecosystem-Associated Marine Sciences (TEAMS) project in 2019. Lacydonia japonica sp. nov. belongs to the eyeless group of lacydoniids and is discriminated from the morphologically most similar congener, Lacydonia papillata Uschakov, 1958 by its reddish pigments on both the dorsal and ventral parapodial cirri and four pigment spots on the pygidium. To assess the phylogenetic position of the new species among other lacydoniids for which sequence data are available in public databases, analyses were performed using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S rRNA, as well as the nuclear 18S rRNA and 28S rRNA genes. We additionally obtained some lacydoniids by sledging off western Japan, but these were severely fragmented and broken during collection. Using the paucity of morphological data, they were left unidentified as Lacydonia sp. but included in the molecular analyses. Genetic distances between Lacydonia eliasoni Hartmann-Schröder, 1996, Lacydonia japonica, and Lacydonia sp. off western Japan were 10.4-17.1% uncorrected p-distance (11.3-18.6% K2P) in terms of 658-bp COI sequences.
