Stable atherosclerotic plaques are characterized by a thick, extracellular matrix-rich fibrous cap populated by protective ACTA2<sup>+</sup> myofibroblast (MF)-like cells, assumed to be almost exclusively derived from smooth muscle cells (SMCs).
