Improved Photostability in Fluorinated 2D Perovskite Single Crystals.

ABSTRACT: Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites are very promising semiconductors for many optoelectronic applications, although their extensive use is limited by their poor stability under environmental conditions. In this work, we synthesize two-dimensional perovskite single crystals and investigate their optical and structural evolution under continuous light irradiation. We found that the hydrophobic nature of the fluorinated component, together with the absence of grain boundary defects, lead to improved material stability thanks to the creation of a robust barrier that preserve the crystalline structure, hindering photo-degradation processes usually promoted by oxygen and moisture.

Self-trapped state enabled filterless narrowband photodetections in 2D layered perovskite single crystals.

Project description:Filterless narrowband photodetectors can realize color discrimination without filter or bulk spectrometer, thus greatly reducing the system volume and cost for many imaging applications. Charge collection narrowing has been demonstrated to be a successful approach to achieve filterless narrowband photodetections; nevertheless, it sacrifices the sensitivity of the photodetectors. Here we show a highly tunable narrowband photodetector based on two-dimensional perovskite single crystals with high external quantum efficiency (200%), ultralow dark current (10-12 A), and high on-off ratio (103). The spectral response of the narrowband photodetectors can be continuously tuned from red to blue with all full-width at half-maximum < 60 nm and especially < 20 nm in blue wavelength range. The excellent performance can be ascribed to self-trapped states within bandgap and extremely low electrical conductivity in the out-of-plane direction. Our findings open the exciting potential of 2D perovskites for next-generation optoelectronics.

Defect-Induced Inhomogeneous Phase Transition in 2D Perovskite Single Crystals at Low Temperatures.

Project description:The temperature-induced phase transition in two-dimensional (2D) layered perovskites was recently found to be incomplete even if the temperature dropped to tens of kelvin. However, its intrinsic cause still remains unclear, and the information on the phase transition in individual single crystals (SCs) is also limited. Herein, we study the phase transition process in individual (n-C4H9NH3)2PbI4 SCs using a home-built photoluminescence (PL)-scanned image microscope. At 83 K, the phase transition is indeed incomplete, leading to the coexistence and inhomogeneous distributions of room-temperature and low-temperature phases. We map the distribution of phase transition degree on individual SCs at 83 K, which exhibits a strong positive (negative) correlation with the distribution of local defects (PL lifetimes) at 293 K, indicating that the phase transition is enhanced by initial defects. Our findings might provide new insight into the phase transition of (n-C4H9NH3)2PbI4 crystals, which is of potential value for applications based on 2D layered perovskites.

Improved 3D-2D Perovskite for Efficient Perovskite Photovoltaics with Low-Temperature Carbon Electrodes.

Project description:Surface passivation and interface modification are effective strategies to acquire outstanding performances for perovskite solar cells (PeSCs). To suppress charge recombination and enhance the stability of the perovskite device, a hydrophobic two-dimensional (2D) perovskite is presented to construct a 3D-2D composite perovskite, passivating the perovskite surface/interfacial imperfection. Herein, a 3D-2D heterojunction perovskite is in situ synthesized on a 3D surface to maximize the charge transport and environmental stability. Through optimizing the annealing procedure systematically, the champion 3D-2D carbon-based PeSC achieves a power conversion efficiency of 17.95% and has wonderful long-term stability. Especially, an improved 3D-2D (3D-2D+) PeSC from restrict annealing even maintains 96.2% of the initial efficiency in air over 800 h and 90% efficiency under continuous 70 °C heating for 10 h owing to the passivation of the surface and thorough crystal boundary for the 3D-2D+ perovskite. The strong environmental stability of 3D-2D PeSCs has provided a wider avenue for fully low-temperature carbon-based PeSCs.

Fluorinated Organic Cations Derived Chiral 2D Perovskite Enabling Enhanced Spin-Dependent Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Chirality-induced spin selectivity observed in chiral 2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite holds promise to achieve spin-dependent electrochemistry. However, conventional chiral 2D perovskites suffer from low conductivity and hygroscopicity, limiting electrochemical performance and operational stability. Here, a cutting-edge material design is introduced to develop a stable and efficient chiral perovskite-based spin polarizer by employing fluorinated chiral cation. The fluorination approach effectively promotes the charge carrier transport along the out-of-plane direction by mitigating the dielectric confinement effect within the multi-quantum well-structured 2D perovskite. Integrating the fluorinated cation incorporated spin polarizer with BiVO4 photoanode considerably boosts the photocurrent density while reducing overpotential through a spin-dependent oxygen evolution reaction. Furthermore, the hydrophobic nature of fluorine in spin polarizer endows operational stability to the photoanode, extending the durability by 280% as compared to the device with non-fluorinated spin polarizer.

Photostability of 2D Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites.

Project description:We analyze the behavior of a series of newly synthesized (R-NH₃)₂PbX₄ perovskites and, in particular, discuss the possible reasons which cause their degradation under UV illumination. Experimental results show that the degradation process depends a lot on their molecular components: not only the inorganic part, but also the chemical structure of the organic moieties play an important role in bleaching and photo-chemical reaction processes which tend to destroy perovskites luminescent framework. In addition, we find the spatial arrangement in crystal also influences the photostability course. Following these trends, we propose a plausible mechanism for the photodegradation of the films, and also introduced options for optimized stability.

Microwave-Assisted Preparation of Organo-Lead Halide Perovskite Single Crystals.

Project description:The efficiency of organo-lead halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices is dramatically lower for amorphous materials compared to highly crystalline ones. Therefore, it is challenging to optimize and scale up the production of large-sized single crystals of perovskite materials. Here, we describe a novel and original approach to preparing lead halide perovskite single crystals by applying microwave radiation during the crystallization. The microwave radiation primarily causes precise heating control in the whole volume and avoids temperature fluctuations. Moreover, this facile microwave-assisted method of preparation is highly reproducible and fully automated, it and can be applied for various different perovskite structures. In addition, this cost-effective method is expected to be easily scalable because of its versatility and low energy consumption. The crystallization process has low heat losses; therefore, only a low microwave reactor power of 8-15 W during the temperature changes and of less than 1 W during the temperature holding is needed.

Contactless measurements of photocarrier transport properties in perovskite single crystals.

Project description:The remarkable properties of metal halide perovskites arising from their impressive charge carrier diffusion lengths have led to rapid advances in solution-processed optoelectronics. Unfortunately, diffusion lengths reported in perovskite single crystals have ranged widely - from 3 μm to 3 mm - for ostensibly similar materials. Here we report a contactless method to measure the carrier mobility and further extract the diffusion length: our approach avoids both the effects of contact resistance and those of high electric field. We vary the density of quenchers - epitaxially included within perovskite single crystals - and report the dependence of excited state lifetime in the perovskite on inter-quencher spacing. Our results are repeatable and self-consistent (i.e. they agree on diffusion length for many different quencher concentrations) to within ± 6%. Using this method, we obtain a diffusion length in metal-halide perovskites of 2.6 μm ± 0.1 μm.

Revisiting the Epitaxial Growth Mechanism of 2D TMDC Single Crystals.

Project description:Epitaxial growth of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) on sapphire substrates has been recognized as a pivotal method for producing wafer-scale single-crystal films. Both step-edges and symmetry of substrate surfaces have been proposed as controlling factors. However, the underlying fundamental still remains elusive. In this work, through the molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) growth on C/M sapphire, it is demonstrated that controlling the sulfur evaporation rate is crucial for dictating the switch between atomic-edge guided epitaxy and van der Waals epitaxy. Low-concentration sulfur condition preserves O/Al-terminated step edges, fostering atomic-edge epitaxy, while high-concentration sulfur leads to S-terminated edges, preferring van der Waals epitaxy. These experiments reveal that on a 2 in. wafer, the van der Waals epitaxy mechanism achieves better control in MoS2 alignment (≈99%) compared to the step edge mechanism (<85%). These findings shed light on the nuanced role of atomic-level thermodynamics in controlling nucleation modes of TMDCs, thereby providing a pathway for the precise fabrication of single-crystal 2D materials on a wafer scale.

Lanthanide Oxalates: From Single Crystals to 2D Functional Honeycomb Nanosheets.

Project description:Oxalates are simple, low-cost but crucial compounds in the technology of lanthanides, actinides, and transition metals. Apart from using oxalate as a versatile ligand in coordination chemistry, simple oxalate salts are still under a scientific focus, linked with ion batteries, optical and magnetic materials, and, most importantly, industrial-technological mining and separation loops. The typically low solubility of oxalate salts is advantageous from the viewpoint of a convenient and affordable synthesis requiring only green solvents. Even though basic lanthanide oxalates have been known for decades, their structural descriptions have remained fuzzy, especially concerning water content and heavy lanthanide analogues. Herein, we present a newly developed preparation technique for large oxalate monocrystals applied to the whole lanthanide series. All of the structures were reviewed, and some new structures were determined. All of these oxalates exhibit a honeycomb structure with closed cavities containing water molecules. These honeycomb coordination polymers form a layered structure bonded by hydrogen bonds. Surprisingly, most oxalates can be easily exfoliated/delaminated in EtOH, forming colloids of up to single-layered nanosheets. Such a feature has never been described for 2D lanthanide oxalates and demonstrates a new form of applicability for them, e.g., for the construction of thin films or inkjet-printed layers using an extremely facile and economical preparation route.
