Project description:An increasing number of genetic and metabolic anomalies have been determined to lead to cancer, generally fatal. Cancerous cells may spread to any body part, where they can be life-threatening. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, and its frequency is increasing worldwide. The main subtypes of skin cancer are squamous and basal cell carcinomas, and melanoma, which is clinically aggressive and responsible for most deaths. Therefore, skin cancer screening is necessary. One of the best methods to accurately and swiftly identify skin cancer is using deep learning (DL). In this research, the deep learning method convolution neural network (CNN) was used to detect the two primary types of tumors, malignant and benign, using the ISIC2018 dataset. This dataset comprises 3533 skin lesions, including benign, malignant, nonmelanocytic, and melanocytic tumors. Using ESRGAN, the photos were first retouched and improved. The photos were augmented, normalized, and resized during the preprocessing step. Skin lesion photos could be classified using a CNN method based on an aggregate of results obtained after many repetitions. Then, multiple transfer learning models, such as Resnet50, InceptionV3, and Inception Resnet, were used for fine-tuning. In addition to experimenting with several models (the designed CNN, Resnet50, InceptionV3, and Inception Resnet), this study's innovation and contribution are the use of ESRGAN as a preprocessing step. Our designed model showed results comparable to the pretrained model. Simulations using the ISIC 2018 skin lesion dataset showed that the suggested strategy was successful. An 83.2% accuracy rate was achieved by the CNN, in comparison to the Resnet50 (83.7%), InceptionV3 (85.8%), and Inception Resnet (84%) models.

Project description:BackgroundIdentifying active lesions in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is crucial for the diagnosis and treatment planning of multiple sclerosis (MS). Active lesions on MRI are identified following the administration of Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs). However, recent studies have reported that repeated administration of GBCA results in the accumulation of Gd in tissues. In addition, GBCA administration increases health care costs. Thus, reducing or eliminating GBCA administration for active lesion detection is important for improved patient safety and reduced healthcare costs. Current state-of-the-art methods for identifying active lesions in brain MRI without GBCA administration utilize data-intensive deep learning methods.ObjectiveTo implement nonlinear dimensionality reduction (NLDR) methods, locally linear embedding (LLE) and isometric feature mapping (Isomap), which are less data-intensive, for automatically identifying active lesions on brain MRI in MS patients, without the administration of contrast agents.Materials and methodsFluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), T2-weighted, proton density-weighted, and pre- and post-contrast T1-weighted images were included in the multiparametric MRI dataset used in this study. Subtracted pre- and post-contrast T1-weighted images were labeled by experts as active lesions (ground truth). Unsupervised methods, LLE and Isomap, were used to reconstruct multiparametric brain MR images into a single embedded image. Active lesions were identified on the embedded images and compared with ground truth lesions. The performance of NLDR methods was evaluated by calculating the Dice similarity (DS) index between the observed and identified active lesions in embedded images.ResultsLLE and Isomap, were applied to 40 MS patients, achieving median DS scores of 0.74 ± 0.1 and 0.78 ± 0.09, respectively, outperforming current state-of-the-art methods.ConclusionsNLDR methods, Isomap and LLE, are viable options for the identification of active MS lesions on non-contrast images, and potentially could be used as a clinical decision tool.

Project description:ObjectivesThis study aims to develop a new diagnostic method for discriminating scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis based on a deep learning (DL) model, which uses the dermatoscopic image as input and achieved higher accuracy than dermatologists trained with dermoscopy.MethodsA total of 1,358 pictures (obtained from 617 patients) with pathological and diagnostic confirmed skin diseases (508 psoriases, 850 seborrheic dermatitides) were randomly allocated into the training, validation, and testing datasets (1,088/134/136) in this study. A DL model concerning dermatoscopic images was established using the transfer learning technique and trained for diagnosing two diseases.ResultsThe developed DL model exhibits good sensitivity, specificity, and Area Under Curve (AUC) (96.1, 88.2, and 0.922%, respectively), it outperformed all dermatologists in the diagnosis of scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis when compared to five dermatologists with various levels of experience. Furthermore, non-proficient doctors with the assistance of the DL model can achieve comparable diagnostic performance to dermatologists proficient in dermoscopy. One dermatology graduate student and two general practitioners significantly improved their diagnostic performance, where their AUC values increased from 0.600, 0.537, and 0.575 to 0.849, 0.778, and 0.788, respectively, and their diagnosis consistency was also improved as the kappa values went from 0.191, 0.071, and 0.143 to 0.679, 0.550, and 0.568, respectively. DL enjoys favorable computational efficiency and requires few computational resources, making it easy to deploy in hospitals.ConclusionsThe developed DL model has favorable performance in discriminating two skin diseases and can improve the diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and treatment of dermatologists in primary hospitals.

Project description:In recent decades, the incidence of melanoma has grown rapidly. Hence, early diagnosis is crucial to improving clinical outcomes. Here, we propose and compare a classical image analysis-based machine learning method with a deep learning one to automatically classify benign vs. malignant dermoscopic skin lesion images. The same dataset of 25,122 publicly available dermoscopic images was used to train both models, while a disjointed test set of 200 images was used for the evaluation phase. The training dataset was randomly divided into 10 datasets of 19,932 images to obtain an equal distribution between the two classes. By testing both models on the disjoint set, the deep learning-based method returned accuracy of 85.4 ± 3.2% and specificity of 75.5 ± 7.6%, while the machine learning one showed accuracy and specificity of 73.8 ± 1.1% and 44.5 ± 4.7%, respectively. Although both approaches performed well in the validation phase, the convolutional neural network outperformed the ensemble boosted tree classifier on the disjoint test set, showing better generalization ability. The integration of new melanoma detection algorithms with digital dermoscopic devices could enable a faster screening of the population, improve patient management, and achieve better survival rates.

Project description:Cortical atrophy is measured clinically according to established visual rating scales based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although brain MRI is the primary imaging marker for neurodegeneration, computed tomography (CT) is also widely used for the early detection and diagnosis of dementia. However, they are seldom investigated. Therefore, we developed a machine learning algorithm for the automatic estimation of cortical atrophy on brain CT. Brain CT images (259 Alzheimer's dementia and 55 cognitively normal subjects) were visually rated by three neurologists and used for training. We constructed an algorithm by combining the convolutional neural network and regularized logistic regression (RLR). Model performance was then compared with that of neurologists, and feature importance was measured. RLR provided fast and reliable automatic estimations of frontal atrophy (75.2% accuracy, 93.6% sensitivity, 67.2% specificity, and 0.87 area under the curve [AUC]), posterior atrophy (79.6% accuracy, 87.2% sensitivity, 75.9% specificity, and 0.88 AUC), right medial temporal atrophy (81.2% accuracy, 84.7% sensitivity, 79.6% specificity, and 0.88 AUC), and left medial temporal atrophy (77.7% accuracy, 91.1% sensitivity, 72.3% specificity, and 0.90 AUC). We concluded that RLR-based automatic estimation of brain CT provided a comprehensive rating of atrophy that can potentially support physicians in real clinical settings.

Project description:To automatically estimate average diaphragm motion trajectory (ADMT) based on four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT), facilitating clinical assessment of respiratory motion and motion variation and retrospective motion study. We have developed an effective motion extraction approach and a machine-learning-based algorithm to estimate the ADMT. Eleven patients with 22 sets of 4DCT images (4DCT1 at simulation and 4DCT2 at treatment) were studied. After automatically segmenting the lungs, the differential volume-per-slice (dVPS) curves of the left and right lungs were calculated as a function of slice number for each phase with respective to the full-exhalation. After 5-slice moving average was performed, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) was applied to analyze the dVPS curves in frequency domain. The dimensionality of the spectrum data was reduced by using several lowest frequency coefficients (fv) to account for most of the spectrum energy (Σfv2). Multiple linear regression (MLR) method was then applied to determine the weights of these frequencies by fitting the ground truth-the measured ADMT, which are represented by three pivot points of the diaphragm on each side. The 'leave-one-out' cross validation method was employed to analyze the statistical performance of the prediction results in three image sets: 4DCT1, 4DCT2, and 4DCT1 + 4DCT2. Seven lowest frequencies in DCT domain were found to be sufficient to approximate the patient dVPS curves (R = 91%-96% in MLR fitting). The mean error in the predicted ADMT using leave-one-out method was 0.3 ± 1.9 mm for the left-side diaphragm and 0.0 ± 1.4 mm for the right-side diaphragm. The prediction error is lower in 4DCT2 than 4DCT1, and is the lowest in 4DCT1 and 4DCT2 combined. This frequency-analysis-based machine learning technique was employed to predict the ADMT automatically with an acceptable error (0.2 ± 1.6 mm). This volumetric approach is not affected by the presence of the lung tumors, providing an automatic robust tool to evaluate diaphragm motion.

Project description:This paper analyzes the impact of automatic wage indexation on employment. To boost competitiveness and increase employment, Belgium suspended its automatic wage indexation system in 2015. This resulted in a 2% fall in real wages for all workers. In the absence of a suitable control group, we use machine learning for the counterfactual analysis. We artificially construct the control group for a difference-in-difference analysis based on the pre-treatment evolution of treated firms. We find a positive impact on employment of 1.2%, which corresponds to a labor demand elasticity of - 0.6. This effect is more pronounced for manufacturing firms, where the elasticity reaches - 1. These results show that a suspension of the automatic wage indexation mechanism can be effective in preserving employment.

Project description:Skin lesions are essential for the early detection and management of a number of dermatological disorders. Learning-based methods for skin lesion analysis have drawn much attention lately because of improvements in computer vision and machine learning techniques. A review of the most-recent methods for skin lesion classification, segmentation, and detection is presented in this survey paper. The significance of skin lesion analysis in healthcare and the difficulties of physical inspection are discussed in this survey paper. The review of state-of-the-art papers targeting skin lesion classification is then covered in depth with the goal of correctly identifying the type of skin lesion from dermoscopic, macroscopic, and other lesion image formats. The contribution and limitations of various techniques used in the selected study papers, including deep learning architectures and conventional machine learning methods, are examined. The survey then looks into study papers focused on skin lesion segmentation and detection techniques that aimed to identify the precise borders of skin lesions and classify them accordingly. These techniques make it easier to conduct subsequent analyses and allow for precise measurements and quantitative evaluations. The survey paper discusses well-known segmentation algorithms, including deep-learning-based, graph-based, and region-based ones. The difficulties, datasets, and evaluation metrics particular to skin lesion segmentation are also discussed. Throughout the survey, notable datasets, benchmark challenges, and evaluation metrics relevant to skin lesion analysis are highlighted, providing a comprehensive overview of the field. The paper concludes with a summary of the major trends, challenges, and potential future directions in skin lesion classification, segmentation, and detection, aiming to inspire further advancements in this critical domain of dermatological research.

Project description:PurposeNon-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most frequent keratinocyte-origin skin tumor. It is confirmed that dermoscopy of NMSC confers a diagnostic advantage as compared to visual face-to-face assessment. COVID-19 restrictions diagnostics by telemedicine photos, which are analogous to visual inspection, displaced part of in-person visits. This study evaluated by a dual convolutional neural network (CNN) performance metrics in dermoscopic (DI) versus smartphone-captured images (SI) and tested if artificial intelligence narrows the proclaimed gap in diagnostic accuracy.MethodsA CNN that receives a raw image and predicts malignancy, overlaid by a second independent CNN which processes a sonification (image-to-sound mapping) of the original image, were combined into a unified malignancy classifier. All images were histopathology-verified in a comparison between NMSC and benign skin lesions excised as suspected NMSCs. Study criteria outcomes were sensitivity and specificity for the unified output.ResultsImages acquired by DI (n = 132 NMSC, n = 33 benign) were compared to SI (n = 170 NMSC, n = 28 benign). DI and SI analysis metrics resulted in an area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operator characteristic curve of 0.911 and 0.821, respectively. Accuracy was increased by DI (0.88; CI 81.9-92.4) as compared to SI (0.75; CI 68.1-80.6, p < 0.005). Sensitivity of DI was higher than SI (95.3%, CI 90.4-98.3 vs 75.3%, CI 68.1-81.6, p < 0.001), but not specificity (p = NS).ConclusionTelemedicine use of smartphone images might result in a substantial decrease in diagnostic performance as compared to dermoscopy, which needs to be considered by both healthcare providers and patients.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Melanoma results in the vast majority of skin cancer deaths during the last decades, even though this disease accounts for only one percent of all skin cancers' instances. The survival rates of melanoma from early to terminal stages is more than fifty percent. Therefore, having the right information at the right time by early detection with monitoring skin lesions to find potential problems is essential to surviving this type of cancer. RESULTS:An approach to classify skin lesions using deep learning for early detection of melanoma in a case-based reasoning (CBR) system is proposed. This approach has been employed for retrieving new input images from the case base of the proposed system DePicT Melanoma Deep-CLASS to support users with more accurate recommendations relevant to their requested problem (e.g., image of affected area). The efficiency of our system has been verified by utilizing the ISIC Archive dataset in analysis of skin lesion classification as a benign and malignant melanoma. The kernel of DePicT Melanoma Deep-CLASS is built upon a convolutional neural network (CNN) composed of sixteen layers (excluding input and ouput layers), which can be recursively trained and learned. Our approach depicts an improved performance and accuracy in testing on the ISIC Archive dataset. CONCLUSIONS:Our methodology derived from a deep CNN, generates case representations for our case base to use in the retrieval process. Integration of this approach to DePicT Melanoma CLASS, significantly improving the efficiency of its image classification and the quality of the recommendation part of the system. The proposed method has been tested and validated on 1796 dermoscopy images. Analyzed results indicate that it is efficient on malignancy detection.
