We have invented a new method for detecting solar particle events using data from the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Using a simple function of the total particle detection rates from four of CRaTER's six detectors, we can precisely identify solar energetic particle event periods in the CRaTER data archive. Project description:An interval of exceptional solar activity was registered in early September 2017, late in the decay phase of solar cycle 24, involving the complex Active Region 12673 as it rotated across the western hemisphere with respect to Earth. A large number of eruptions occurred between 4 and 10 September, including four associated with X-class flares. The X9.3 flare on 6 September and the X8.2 flare on 10 September are currently the two largest during cycle 24. Both were accompanied by fast coronal mass ejections and gave rise to solar energetic particle (SEP) events measured by near-Earth spacecraft. In particular, the partially occulted solar event on 10 September triggered a ground-level enhancement (GLE), the second GLE of cycle 24. A further, much less energetic SEP event was recorded on 4 September. In this work we analyze observations by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), estimating the SEP event-integrated spectra above 300 keV and carrying out a detailed study of the spectral shape temporal evolution. Derived spectra are characterized by a low-energy break at few/tens of MeV; the 10 September event spectrum, extending up to ~1 GeV, exhibits an additional rollover at several hundred MeV. We discuss the spectral interpretation in the scenario of shock acceleration and in terms of other important external influences related to interplanetary transport and magnetic connectivity, taking advantage of multipoint observations from the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory. Spectral results are also compared with those obtained for the 17 May 2012 GLE event.

Project description:Solar eclipses provide unique possibilities to investigate atmospheric processes, such as new particle formation (NPF), important to the global aerosol load and radiative balance. The temporary absence of solar radiation gives particular insight into different oxidation and clustering processes leading to NPF. This is crucial because our mechanistic understanding on how NPF is related to photochemistry is still rather limited. During a partial solar eclipse over Finland in 2015, we found that this phenomenon had prominent effects on atmospheric on-going NPF. During the eclipse, the sources of aerosol precursor gases, such as sulphuric acid and nitrogen- containing highly oxidised organic compounds, decreased considerably, which was followed by a reduced formation of small clusters and nanoparticles and thus termination of NPF. After the eclipse, aerosol precursor molecule concentrations recovered and re-initiated NPF. Our results provide direct evidence on the key role of the photochemical production of sulphuric acid and highly oxidized organic compounds in maintaining atmospheric NPF. Our results also explain the rare occurrence of this phenomenon under dark conditions, as well as its seemingly weak connection with atmospheric ions.

Project description:ObjectiveTo measure the prevalence of alcohol and/or other drug (AOD) detections in suspected major trauma patients with non-transport injuries who presented to an adult major trauma centre.MethodsThis registry-based cohort study examined the prevalence of AOD detections in patients aged ≥18 years who: (i) sustained non-transport injuries; and (ii) met predefined trauma call-out criteria and were therefore managed by an interdisciplinary trauma team between 1 July 2021 and 31 December 2022. Prevalence was measured using routine in-hospital blood alcohol and urine drug screens.ResultsA total of 1469 cases met the inclusion criteria. Of cases with a valid blood test (n = 1248, 85.0%), alcohol was detected in 313 (25.1%) patients. Of the 733 (49.9%) cases with urine drug screen results, cannabinoids were most commonly detected (n = 103, 14.1%), followed by benzodiazepines (n = 98, 13.4%), amphetamine-type substances (n = 80, 10.9%), opioids (n = 28, 3.8%) and cocaine (n = 17, 2.3%). Alcohol and/or at least one other drug was detected in 37.4% (n = 472) of cases with either a blood alcohol or urine drug test completed (n = 1263, 86.0%). Multiple substances were detected in 16.6% (n = 119) of cases with both blood alcohol and urine drug screens (n = 718, 48.9%). Detections were prevalent in cases of interpersonal violence (n = 123/179, 68.7%) and intentional self-harm (n = 50/106, 47.2%), and in those occurring on Friday and Saturday nights (n = 118/191, 61.8%).ConclusionAOD detections were common in trauma patients with non-transport injury causes. Population-level surveillance is needed to inform prevention strategies that address AOD use as a significant risk factor for serious injury.

Project description:We here present a novel subtype of fibroblasts isolated from sun-exposed skin of elderly donors and characterized by its prominent and stable myo-chondrocyte-type differentiation. As we depict a similar chondrocyte-type expression pattern at sites of solar elastosis in human skin, we propose that this fibroblasts phenotype develops in the course of massive and perseverative UV-dependent damage as part of the process terminating in the most severe appearance of photoaging - solar elastosis. Along with the abnormal expression profile, these “old” fibroblasts generate a chondrocyte-type matrix with a layer of myofibroblast-differentiation in close vicinity to the epidermis, when propagated as skin equivalents (SEs) in 3D organotypic cultures. Importantly, these fibroblasts are strongly reduced in their ability to support epidermal growth and differentiation, allowing for rapid/premature epidermal atrophy. Having identified TGFß as an important player in this scenario, we show that the addition of TGFß to normal young fibroblast induces while inhibition of TGFß to the old fibroblast abolishes the myo-chondrogenic expression profile. Accordingly, inhibiting TGFß in the in vivo-like SEs, not only abrogates the aberrant phenotype but allows these fibroblasts to regain their normal mutual interaction with the epidermal keratinocytes and to support epidermal regeneration and longevity. Further, we provide evidence for a role of chronic solar UV radiation in initiating chondrogenic gene expression in young fibroblasts. Concomitantly, we show however, that the same UV treatment abolishes myofibroblast differentiation in the SEs with the “old” chondrogenic fibroblasts, and that this selective inhibition is already sufficient to restore the fibroblasts’ ability for successfully supporting epidermal growth and differentiation. From this it is tempting to suggest, that besides all damaging potential, “mild” solar UV radiation may exert also beneficial effects, e.g. in promoting activation of photoaged skin.

Project description:This study introduces a tunable acoustic tweezer system designed for precise three-dimensional particle trapping and manipulation. The system utilizes a dual-liquid-layer acoustic lens, which enables the dynamic control of the focal length through the adjustable curvature of a latex membrane. This tunability is essential for generating the acoustic forces necessary for effective manipulation of particles, particularly along the direction of acoustic wave propagation (z-axis). Experiments conducted with spherical particles as small as 1.5 mm in diameter demonstrated the system's capability for stable trapping and manipulation. Performance was rigorously evaluated through both z-axis and 3D manipulation tests. In the z-axis experiments, the system achieved a manipulation range of 33.4-53.4 mm, with a root-mean-square error and standard deviation of 0.044 ± 0.045 mm, which highlights its precision. Further, the 3D manipulation experiments showed that particles could be accurately guided along complex paths, including multilayer rectangular and helical trajectories, with minimal deviation. A visual feedback-based particle navigation system significantly enhanced positional accuracy, reducing errors relative to open-loop control. These results confirm that the tunable acoustic tweezer system is a robust tool for applications requiring precise control of particles with diameter of 1.5 mm in three-dimensional environments. Considering its ability to dynamically adjust the focal point and maintain stable trapping, this system is well suited for tasks demanding high precision, such as targeted particle delivery and other applications involving advanced material manipulation.

Project description:Particle systems made up of interacting agents is a popular model used in a vast array of applications, not the least in biology where the agents can represent everything from single cells to animals in a herd. Usually, the particles are assumed to undergo some type of random movements, and a popular way to model this is by using Brownian motion. The magnitude of random motion is often quantified using mean squared displacement, which provides a simple estimate of the diffusion coefficient. However, this method often fails when data is sparse or interactions between agents frequent. In order to address this, we derive a conjugate relationship in the diffusion term for large interacting particle systems undergoing isotropic diffusion, giving us an efficient inference method. The method accurately accounts for emerging effects such as anomalous diffusion stemming from mechanical interactions. We apply our method to an agent-based model with a large number of interacting particles, and the results are contrasted with a naive mean square displacement-based approach. We find a significant improvement in performance when using the higher-order method over the naive approach. This method can be applied to any system where agents undergo Brownian motion and will lead to improved estimates of diffusion coefficients compared to existing methods.

Project description:Solar energetic particle (SEP) events are known to occur following solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). However, some high-energy solar events do not result in SEPs being detected at Earth, and it is these types of event which may be termed "false alarms". We define two simple SEP forecasting algorithms based upon the occurrence of a magnetically well-connected CME with a speed in excess of 1500kms-1 (a "fast" CME) or a well-connected X-class flare and analyse them with respect to historical datasets. We compare the parameters of those solar events which produced an enhancement of >40MeV protons at Earth (an "SEP event") and the parameters of false alarms. We find that an SEP forecasting algorithm based solely upon the occurrence of a well-connected fast CME produces fewer false alarms (28.8%) than an algorithm which is based solely upon a well-connected X-class flare (50.6%). Both algorithms fail to forecast a relatively high percentage of SEP events (53.2% and 50.6%, respectively). Our analysis of the historical datasets shows that false-alarm X-class flares were either not associated with any CME, or were associated with a CME slower than 500kms-1 ; false-alarm fast CMEs tended to be associated with flare classes lower than M3. A better approach to forecasting would be an algorithm which takes as its base the occurrence of both CMEs and flares. We define a new forecasting algorithm which uses a combination of CME and flare parameters, and we show that the false-alarm ratio is similar to that for the algorithm based upon fast CMEs (29.6%), but the percentage of SEP events not forecast is reduced to 32.4%. Project description:This paper reports a method to generate tunable bottle beams using an ultrasonic lens, by which the bottle position can be precisely adjusted with the change of the acoustic frequency. Therefore, the position of a single particle or bubble in liquid can be manipulated without using phased array which is costly and huge with complex circuits. Furthermore, we introduced this method to multiple bubble manipulation using acoustic holography. The bottle properties against frequency are theoretically and experimentally analyzed. It is shown that the bottle position depends almost linearly on the operating frequency, which provides a basis for the precise manipulation of bubbles and particles. In addition, the relationship between the acoustic radiation force and the drag force under different incident acoustic pressures is considered, establishing a limit on the moving velocity of the trapped particles. The ultrasonic field observation is further demonstrated by Schlieren imaging system. The proposed method has potential biomedical applications, such as more flexible cell manipulation and targeted drug delivery in vivo, as well as potential applications in the study of chemical reactions between micro objects.

Project description:During solar storms, the Sun expels large amounts of energetic particles (SEP) that can react with the Earth's atmospheric constituents and produce cosmogenic radionuclides such as 14C, 10Be and 36Cl. Here we present 10Be and 36Cl data measured in ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica. The data consistently show one of the largest 10Be and 36Cl production peaks detected so far, most likely produced by an extreme SEP event that hit Earth 9125 years BP (before present, i.e., before 1950 CE), i.e., 7176 BCE. Using the 36Cl/10Be ratio, we demonstrate that this event was characterized by a very hard energy spectrum and was possibly up to two orders of magnitude larger than any SEP event during the instrumental period. Furthermore, we provide 10Be-based evidence that, contrary to expectations, the SEP event occurred near a solar minimum.

Project description:Cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) negatively affect ecological, human, and animal health. Traditional methods of validating satellite algorithms with data from water samples are often inhibited by the expense of quantifying cyanobacteria indicators in the field and the lack of public data. However, state recreation advisories and other recorded events of cyanoHAB occurrence reported by local authorities can serve as an independent and publicly available dataset for validation. State recreation advisories were defined as a period delimited by a start and end date where a warning was issued due to detections of cyanoHABs over a state's risk threshold. State reported events were defined as any event that was documented with a single date related to cyanoHABs. This study examined the presence-absence agreement between 160 state reported cyanoHAB advisories and 1,343 events and cyanobacteria biomass estimated by a satellite algorithm called the Cyanobacteria Index (CIcyano). The true positive rate of agreement with state recreation advisories was 69% and 60% with state reported events. CIcyano detected a reduction or absence in cyanobacteria after 76% of the recreation advisories ended. CIcyano was used to quantify the magnitude, spatial extent, and temporal frequency of cyanoHABs; each of these three metrics were greater (r > 0.2) during state recreation advisories compared to non-advisory times with effect sizes ranging from small to large. This is the first study to quantitatively evaluate satellite algorithm performance for detecting cyanoHABs with state reported events and advisories and supports informed management decisions with satellite technologies that complement traditional field observations.
