Unusual hydrogen implanted gold with lattice contraction at increased hydrogen content.

ABSTRACT: The experimental evidence for the contraction of volume of gold implanted with hydrogen at low doses is presented. The contraction of lattice upon the addition of other elements is very rare and extraordinary in the solid-state, not only for gold but also for many other solids. To explain the underlying physics, the pure kinetic theory of absorption is not adequate and the detailed interaction of hydrogen in the lattice needs to be clarified. Our analysis points to the importance of the formation of hydride bonds in a dynamic manner and explains why these bonds become weak at higher doses, leading to the inverse process of volume expansion frequently seen in metallic hydrogen containers.

N-induced lattice contraction generally boosts the hydrogen evolution catalysis of P-rich metal phosphides.

Project description:P-rich transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with abundant P sites have been predicted to be more favorable for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysis. However, the actual activities of P-rich TMPs do not behave as expected, and the underlying essence especially at the atomic level is also ambiguous. Our structural analysis reveals the inferior activity could stem from the reduced overlap of atomic wave functions between metal and P with the increase in P contents, which consequently results in too strong P-H interaction. To this end, we used N-induced lattice contraction to generally boost the HER catalysis of P-rich TMPs including CoP2, FeP2, NiP2, and MoP2. Refined structural characterization and theoretical analysis indicate the N-P strong interaction could increase the atomic wave function overlap and eventually modulate the H adsorption strength. The concept of lattice engineering offers a new vision for tuning the catalytic activities of P-rich TMPs and beyond.

Lattice-contraction triggered synchronous electrochromic actuator.

Project description:Materials with synchronous capabilities of color change and actuation have prospects for application in biomimetic dual-stealth camouflage and artificial intelligence. However, color/shape dual-responsive devices involve stimuli that are difficult to control such as gas, light or magnetism, and the devices show poor coordination. Here, a flexible composite film with electrochromic/actuating (238° bending angle) dual-responsive phenomena, excellent reversibility, high synchronization, and fast response speed (< 5 s) utilizes a single active component, W18O49 nanowires. From in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction, first principles calculations/numerical simulations, and a series of control experiments, the actuating mechanism for macroscopic deformation is elucidated as pseudocapacitance-based reversible lattice contraction/recovery of W18O49 nanowires (i.e. nanostructure change at the atomic level) during lithium ion intercalation/de-intercalation. In addition, we demonstrate the W18O49 nanowires in a solid-state ionic polymer-metal composite actuator that operates stably in air with a significant pseudocapacitive actuation.

Suburothelial Bladder Contraction Detection with Implanted Pressure Sensor.

Project description:AimsManaging bladder pressure in patients with neurogenic bladders is needed to improve rehabilitation options, avoid upper tract damage, incontinence, and their associated co-morbidities and mortality. Current methods of determining bladder contractions are not amenable to chronic or ambulatory settings. In this study we evaluated detection of bladder contractions using a novel piezoelectric catheter-free pressure sensor placed in a suburothelial bladder location in animals.MethodsWired prototypes of the pressure monitor were implanted into 2 nonsurvival (feline and canine) and one 13-day survival (canine) animal. Vesical pressures were obtained from the device in both suburothelial and intraluminal locations and simultaneously from a pressure sensing catheter in the bladder. Intravesical pressure was monitored in the survival animal over 10 days from the suburothelial location and necropsy was performed to assess migration and erosion.ResultsIn the nonsurvival animals, the average correlation between device and reference catheter data was high during both electrically stimulated bladder contractions and manual compressions (r = 0.93±0.03, r = 0.89±0.03). Measured pressures correlated strongly (r = 0.98±0.02) when the device was placed in the bladder lumen. The survival animal initially recorded physiologic data, but later this deteriorated. However, endstage intraluminal device recordings correlated (r = 0.85±0.13) with the pressure catheter. Significant erosion of the implant through the detrusor was found.ConclusionsThis study confirms correlation between suburothelial pressure readings and intravesical bladder pressures. Due to device erosion during ambulatory studies, a wireless implant is recommended for clinical rehabilitation applications.

Transient lattice contraction in the solid-to-plasma transition.

Project description:In condensed matter systems, strong optical excitations can induce phonon-driven processes that alter their mechanical properties. We report on a new phenomenon where a massive electronic excitation induces a collective change in the bond character that leads to transient lattice contraction. Single large van der Waals clusters were isochorically heated to a nanoplasma state with an intense 10-fs x-ray (pump) pulse. The structural evolution of the nanoplasma was probed with a second intense x-ray (probe) pulse, showing systematic contraction stemming from electron delocalization during the solid-to-plasma transition. These findings are relevant for any material in extreme conditions ranging from the time evolution of warm or hot dense matter to ultrafast imaging with intense x-ray pulses or, more generally, any situation that involves a condensed matter-to-plasma transition.

3D lattice distortions and defect structures in ion-implanted nano-crystals.

Project description:Focussed Ion Beam (FIB) milling is a mainstay of nano-scale machining. By manipulating a tightly focussed beam of energetic ions, often gallium (Ga+), FIB can sculpt nanostructures via localised sputtering. This ability to cut solid matter on the nano-scale revolutionised sample preparation across the life, earth and materials sciences. Despite its widespread usage, detailed understanding of the FIB-induced structural damage, intrinsic to the technique, remains elusive. Here we examine the defects caused by FIB in initially pristine objects. Using Bragg Coherent X-ray Diffraction Imaging (BCDI), we are able to spatially-resolve the full lattice strain tensor in FIB-milled gold nano-crystals. We find that every use of FIB causes large lattice distortions. Even very low ion doses, typical of FIB imaging and previously thought negligible, have a dramatic effect. Our results are consistent with a damage microstructure dominated by vacancies, highlighting the importance of free-surfaces in determining which defects are retained. At larger ion fluences, used during FIB-milling, we observe an extended dislocation network that causes stresses far beyond the bulk tensile strength of gold. These observations provide new fundamental insight into the nature of the damage created and the defects that lead to a surprisingly inhomogeneous morphology.

Revealing nano-scale lattice distortions in implanted material with 3D Bragg ptychography.

Project description:Small ion-irradiation-induced defects can dramatically alter material properties and speed up degradation. Unfortunately, most of the defects irradiation creates are below the visibility limit of state-of-the-art microscopy. As such, our understanding of their impact is largely based on simulations with major unknowns. Here we present an x-ray crystalline microscopy approach, able to image with high sensitivity, nano-scale 3D resolution and extended field of view, the lattice strains and tilts in crystalline materials. Using this enhanced Bragg ptychography tool, we study the damage helium-ion-irradiation produces in tungsten, revealing a series of crystalline details in the 3D sample. Our results lead to the conclusions that few-atom-large 'invisible' defects are likely isotropic in orientation and homogeneously distributed. A partially defect-denuded region is observed close to a grain boundary. These findings open up exciting perspectives for the modelling of irradiation damage and the detailed analysis of crystalline properties in complex materials.

Extraordinary lattice thermal conductivity of gold sulfide monolayers.

Project description:Gold sulfide monolayers (α-, β-Au2S, α-, β-, γ-AuS) have emerged as a new class of two-dimensional (2D) materials with appealing properties such as high thermal and dynamical stability, oxidation resistance, and excellent electron mobility. However, their thermal properties are still unexplored. In this study, based on first-principles calculations and the Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation, we report the lattice thermal conductivity (κ) and related phonon thermal properties of all members of this family. Our results show that gold sulfide monolayers have lattice thermal conductivity spanning almost three orders of magnitude, from 0.04 W m-1 K-1 to 10.62 W m-1 K-1, with different levels of anisotropy. Particularly, our results demonstrate that β-Au2S with ultralow κ aa = 0.06 W m-1 K-1 and κ bb = 0.04 W m-1 K-1 along the principal in-plane directions, has one of the lowest κ values that have been reported for a 2D material, well below that of PbSe. This extremely low lattice thermal conductivity can be attributed to its flattened phonon branches and low phonon group velocity, high anharmonicity, and short phonon lifetimes. Our results may provide insight into the application of gold sulfide monolayers as thermoelectric materials, and motivate future κ measurements of gold sulfide monolayers.

Pd hydride metallene aerogels with lattice hydrogen participation for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction.

Project description:Hydrogen adsorption and desorption in single-phase catalysts often occur at a single catalytic site based on the traditional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) pathway, which makes it difficult to break the limitation entailed by the Sabatier principle. Herein, β-Pd hydride metallene (β-PdHene) aerogels are synthesized as advanced HER catalysts. A lattice hydrogen-involved mechanism is reported to separate adsorption and desorption sites, which is thermodynamically favorable compared to the traditional reaction pathway. In situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations reveal that lattice hydrogen as additional active sites directly participate in the HER process. Consequently, β-PdHene aerogels exhibit a low overpotential of only 20 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and remarkable HER stability, which are even comparable to commercial Pt/C. Our work opens an avenue to rationally develop highly active HER catalysts, bypassing the design limitations of catalysts under traditional mechanisms.

Unusual features of lattice dynamics in lawsonite near its phase transitions.

Project description:Lattice dynamics of a single crystal of lawsonite were studied over a broad range of frequencies (1 Hz to 20 THz) using impedance, THz time-domain and infrared spectroscopies. Based on polarized spectra of complex permittivity [Formula: see text] measured as a function of temperature between 10 K and 500 K, we analyzed the properties of the two known phase transitions-an antiferrodistortive one near [Formula: see text] and a ferroelectric one, occurring at [Formula: see text]. The former one is accompanied by a flat maximum in the THz-range permittivity [Formula: see text] near [Formula: see text], which is due to an overdamped polar excitation in the [Formula: see text] spectra reflecting the dynamics of water and hydroxyl groups. The strength of this mode decreases on cooling below [Formula: see text], and the mode vanishes below [Formula: see text] due to hydrogen ordering. At the pseudoproper ferroelectric phase transition, two independent anomalies in permittivity were observed. First, [Formula: see text] exhibits a peak at [Formula: see text] due to critical slowing down of a relaxation in the GHz range. Second, infrared and THz spectra revealed an optical phonon softening towards [Formula: see text] which causes a smaller but pronounced maximum in [Formula: see text]. Such anomaly, consisting in a soft mode polarized perpendicularly to the ferroelectric axis, is unusual in ferroelectrics.

Essential role of lattice oxygen in hydrogen sensing reaction.

Project description:Understanding the sensing mechanism of metal oxide semiconductors is imperative to the development of high-performance sensors. The traditional sensing mechanism only recognizes the effect of surface chemisorbed oxygen from the air but ignores surface lattice oxygen. Herein, using in-situ characterizations, we provide direct experimental evidence that the surface chemisorbed oxygen participated in the sensing process can come from lattice oxygen of the oxides. Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations prove that the p-band center of O serves as a state of art for regulating the participation of lattice oxygen in gas-sensing reactions. Based on our experimental data and theoretical calculations, we discuss mechanisms that are fundamentally different from the conventional mechanism and show that the easily participation of lattice oxygen is helpful for the high response value of the materials.
