A standalone electrochemical method for detecting the bacterium <i>Escherichia coli</i> in water was developed using a nickel electrode and no biorecognition element. Electric current responses from different <i>E. coli</i> concentrations were recorded based on their interaction with a locally formed electrocatalyst.
