Distributional Properties and Criterion Validity of a Shortened Version of the Social Responsiveness Scale: Results from the ECHO Program and Implications for Social Communication Research.

ABSTRACT: Prior work proposed a shortened version of the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), a commonly used quantitative measure of social communication traits. We used data from 3031 participants (including 190 ASD cases) from the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program to compare distributional properties and criterion validity of 16-item "short" to 65-item "full" SRS scores. Results demonstrated highly overlapping distributions of short and full scores. Both scores separated case from non-case individuals by approximately two standard deviations. ASD prediction was nearly identical for short and full scores (area under the curve values of 0.87, 0.86 respectively). Findings support comparability of shortened and full scores, suggesting opportunities to increase efficiency. Future work should confirm additional psychometric properties of short scores.

Project description:Background/Objectives: The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire is a widely employed self-report tool for assessing upper extremity function. The aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Serbian version of the DASH by determining its criterion and construct validity, as well as internal consistency. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with hand and wrist disabilities at the Institute for Orthopedics "Banjica", Serbia. The psychometric properties of the Serbian version of the DASH were analyzed through an examination of its factorial structure and internal consistency. The DASH consists of 30 items, 24 of which assess function, 21 of which focus on physical function and three on social/role function. The remaining six items evaluate symptoms related to pain, tingling/numbness, weakness, and stiffness. Results: A total of 297 patients were included in the study. The mean age was 47.4 ± 16.8 years, with 50.5% males. Three models were assessed to determine the reliability and validity of the questionnaire across different domains. Model 1 examined a single-factor structure. In Model 2, the items were divided into two domains: Physical Function and Psychosocial/Symptoms. In Model 3, items were subdivided into three domains: Physical Function, Symptoms, and Psychosocial. All models demonstrated an excellent internal consistency with a Cronbach's alpha > 0.9 for most domains. The values for the fit indices Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) and Comparative-Fit Index (CFI) were above their cut-off criteria of 0.9, while the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR) were below the suggested value of 0.06, indicating an excellent level of models fit. Standardized factor loadings were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The present study provided the evidence for the appropriate metric properties of the Serbian version of the DASH. Results support both the unidimensional and multidimensional structures of the DASH.

Project description:Study designCross-cultural adaptation and psychometric evaluation.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to translate the Neck Disability Index (NDI) into the simplified-Chinese language and to evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the new questionnaire.Summary of background dataNeck pain is a major health problem resulting in major disability. NDI is the most frequently used scale for self-rating of disability due to neck pain. At present, there is no simplified-Chinese version of the NDI. The aims of this study were to culturally adapt and translate the NDI into the simplified-Chinese language (NDI-SC) and to evaluate its psychometric properties in patients with neck pain.MethodsThe NDI was translated into simplified-Chinese version based on established guidelines. A total of 70 patients participated in this study. Patients were asked to complete a set of questionnaires comprising of their demographic information, the NDI-SC, and a visual analog scale (VAS) of pain. Fifty-six patients returned after 1 to 2 weeks to complete the same set of questionnaires and the global rating of change (GROC) scale. Then, the NDI-SC was evaluated for content validity, construct validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and responsiveness.ResultsThe NDI-SC demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.92) and good test-retest reliability (ICC2,1 = 0.85). Content validity was confirmed as no floor or ceiling effects were detected for the NDI-SC total score. Construct validity was established with factor analysis revealing two-factor subscales explaining 66% of the variance. The NDI-SC showed a strong correlation with VAS (Rp = 0.61, P < 0.001) and a moderate correlation with GROC (Rs = 0.46, P < 0.001). The correlation between NDI-SC change scores and VAS change scores was also moderate (Rp = 0.59, P < 0.001).ConclusionThe results showed that the NDI-SC is a reliable, valid, and responsive instrument to measure functional limitations in patients with neck pain.Level of evidence3.

Project description:There is a scarcity of diagnostic assessments and screening tools for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in Greek. In this study, we examined the psychometric properties of the recently developed Greek version of the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ). We used parental responses for 311 children (mean age: 7.54 years old, SD = 1.92), 122 with a diagnosis of ASD (93 boys, 29 girls) and 189 neurotypical children (104 boys, 85 girls), with 167 responses referring to the Lifetime and 144 to the Current form of the SCQ. Both forms presented adequate construct validity based on the four-factor model, while in both forms, autistic children presented higher SCQ total and subscale scores (four factors) than typical children. The forms had excellent internal reliability. An item-response-theory analysis suggested that over 80% of test items fitted adequately a Rasch model, while a preliminary analysis of gender biases suggested that a small number of items (Lifetime: five; Current: six out of 39) were differentially sensitive to autistic symptomatology in boys and girls. A receiver-operating-characteristic analysis showed excellent diagnostic performance based on the SCQ total score (Lifetime: area-under-the-curve/AUC = 0.937, Current: AUC = 0.963), and acceptable to excellent discrimination for the four subscales (AUCs between 0.737 and 0.955). Our preliminary results suggest that the Greek SCQ presents satisfactory psychometric properties and can be used for differentiating children with ASD from typical children in initial assessments within clinical and research settings. LAY SUMMARY: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD or autism) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition with a prevalence of ~1.5%-2% and characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication and repetitive and restricted behaviors. There is increasing concern that research in ASD has focused on a small number of languages and cultural settings and that this bias challenges the identification and diagnosis of the condition in other languages and cultures, which are underrepresented in autism research. One such language is Greek (spoken by ~13.5 million), for which there is a scarcity of standardized instruments for the diagnosis of autism. This study examines the psychometric properties of the recently published Greek version of the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ), a widely used screening tool for ASD. We conduct an in-depth psychometric analysis of the Greek SCQ, including both forms in which the instrument is available (Lifetime and Current). This analysis shows that the Greek SCQ can be used for differentiating children with ASD from typical children in initial assessments within clinical and research settings. The findings of this study have implications for clinicians, special educators and researchers working with Greek-speaking individuals with ASD and, more broadly, for cross-cultural autism research.
