Sext Dissemination: Differences across Nations in Motivations and Associations.

ABSTRACT: Sext dissemination presents policy and legislative challenges given its potential psychological, social, and legal harms. We report on a cross-national comparison of sext-image dissemination in a large sample of 1148 young adults aged 18-29 years (M = 22.54, SD = 2.50, 53.0% women, 47.0% men), either U.S. (53.8%) or Australian (46.2%) residents. The results indicate that 14% of young adults disseminated sexts, with no difference by gender or country. Over 50% of respondents indicated that the last time they received a disseminated sext, it was unexpected or unwelcome, with women twice as likely as men to receive unwelcome sexts. The most frequent motivations for sext dissemination were similar cross-nationally, relating to the attractiveness of the person depicted, as a joke, to gossip, because it was not a big deal, bragging, roasting or teasing, and to increase social status. Motivations of attractiveness, bragging, or social status were more commonly endorsed by men, while women endorsed reasons around gossip or roasting/teasing. Unique predictors of sext dissemination included U.S. residence, requesting sexts, receiving disseminated sexts, having one's own images disseminated, and more positive subjective norms to dissemination, and there was a country-gender interaction, where Australian women and U.S. men were more likely to disseminate sexts than then U.S. women or Australian men. The findings have implications for prevention programs seeking to address harmful online sexual interactions, including addressing respect, consent, and subjective norms supporting non-consensual dissemination.

Project description:BackgroundFirst Nations people are more likely than the general population to experience long-term adverse health outcomes after coronary angiography. Our aim was to quantify the extent of coronary artery disease among First Nations and non-First Nations patients undergoing angiography to investigate differences in coronary artery disease and related health disparities.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective matched cohort study to compare health outcomes of First Nations and non-First Nations adult patients (> 18 yr) who underwent index angiography between Apr. 1, 2008, and Mar. 31, 2012, in Manitoba, Canada. The SYNTAX Score was used to measure and compare severity of coronary artery disease between groups. Primary outcomes of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were compared between groups using Cox proportional hazard models adjusted by SYNTAX Score results and weighted by the inverse probability of being First Nations. Secondary outcomes included all-cause and cardiovascular-related hospital admissions.ResultsThe cohort consisted of 277 matched pairs of First Nations and non-First Nations patients undergoing angiography; the average age of patients was 56.0 (standard deviation 11.7) years. The median SYNTAX Score results and patient distributions across categories in the matched paired cohort groups were not significantly different. Although proportionally First Nations patients showed worse health outcomes, mortality risks were similar in the weighted sample, even after controlling for revascularization and SYNTAX Score results. Secondary outcomes showed that adjusted risks for hospital admission for acute myocardial infarction (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 3.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40-6.55) and for congestive heart failure (adjusted HR 3.84, 95% CI 1.37-10.78) were significantly higher among First Nations patients in the weighted sample.InterpretationThe extent of coronary artery disease among matched cohort groups of First Nations and non-First Nations patients appears similar, and controlling for baseline sociodemographic characteristics, coronary artery disease risk factors and SYNTAX Score results explained higher mortality risk and most hospital admissions among First Nations patients. Although there is a need to decrease risk factors for coronary artery disease among First Nations populations, addressing individuals' behaviour without considering root causes underlying risk factors for coronary artery disease will fail to decrease health outcome disparities among First Nations patients undergoing angiography.

Project description:BackgroundCanada's Aboriginal population faces significantly higher rates of stillbirth and neonatal and postnatal death than those seen in the general population. The objective of this study was to compare indicators of obstetric care quality and use of obstetric interventions between First Nations and non-First Nations mothers in British Columbia, Canada.MethodsWe linked obstetrical medical records with the First Nations Client File for all nulliparous women who delivered single infants in British Columbia from 1999 to 2011. Using logistic regression models, we examined differences in the proportion of women who received services aligned with best practice guidelines, as well as the overall use of obstetric interventions among First Nations mothers compared with the general population, controlling for geographic barriers (distance to hospital) and other relevant confounders.ResultsDuring the study period, 215,993 single births occurred in nulliparous women in British Columbia, 9152 of which were to members of our First Nations cohort. First Nations mothers were less likely to have early ultrasonography (adjusted risk difference = 10.2 fewer women per 100 deliveries [95% confidence interval {CI} -11.3 to -9.3]), to have at least 4 antenatal care visits (3.6 fewer women per 100 deliveries [95% CI -4.6 to -2.6]), and to undergo labour induction after prolonged (> 24 hours) prelabour rupture of membranes (-5.9 [95% CI -11.8 to 0.1]) or at post-dates gestation (-10.6 [95% CI -13.8 to -7.5]). Obstetric interventions including epidural, labour induction, instrumental delivery and cesarean delivery were used less often in First Nations mothers.InterpretationWe identified differences in the obstetric care received by First Nations mothers compared with the general population. Such differences warrant further investigation, given increases in perinatal mortality that are consistently shown and that may be a downstream consequence of differences in care.

Project description:Caffeinated beverages are a part of daily life. Caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, and soft drinks are easy to purchase and are frequently consumed by young college students. Moreover, smoking influences the consumption of caffeinated beverages. The concentration of caffeine in these products is an attractive factor for individuals that desire the effects of caffeine; however, abusing such products may lead to poor sleep quality. The motivations that drive caffeinated beverage consumption were investigated in this study through a survey. Self-reported questionnaires were distributed on campus to students enrolled at a university in Korea. The motivations of the students for consuming each caffeinated beverage and their sleep quality were investigated. The results of exploratory factor analysis showed the motivations for caffeinated beverage consumption were alertness, taste, mood, socialization, health benefits, and habit. The motivations for consuming each caffeinated beverage product were different. For instance, coffee consumption was motivated by a desire for alertness (B = .107, SE = .049, t = 2.181, p < 0.05) and by habit (B = .345, SE = .046, t = 7.428, p < 0.001), whereas tea consumption was influenced by socialization (B = .142, SE = .060, t = 2.357, p < 0.05). Energy drink consumption was motivated by a desire for alertness (B = .100, SE = .034, t = 2.966, p < 0.01) and health benefits (B = .120, SE = .051, t = 2.345, p < 0.05), while the consumption of soft drinks was not motivated by any specific factors. Caffeinated beverage consumption did not show a significant relationship with sleep quality, although the general sleep quality of the respondents was poor. Smoking status showed significant differences in coffee and tea consumption as well as sleep quality. Smokers had a higher intake of coffee and a lower intake of tea than non-smokers. No interaction effect between smoking and coffee on sleep quality was found. Labeling detailing the amount of caffeine in products is necessary and a cautionary statement informing consumers that smoking cigarettes enhances the effects of caffeine should be included.
