Deep learning predicts boiling heat transfer.

ABSTRACT: Boiling is arguably Nature's most effective thermal management mechanism that cools submersed matter through bubble-induced advective transport. Central to the boiling process is the development of bubbles. Connecting boiling physics with bubble dynamics is an important, yet daunting challenge because of the intrinsically complex and high dimensional of bubble dynamics. Here, we introduce a data-driven learning framework that correlates high-quality imaging on dynamic bubbles with associated boiling curves. The framework leverages cutting-edge deep learning models including convolutional neural networks and object detection algorithms to automatically extract both hierarchical and physics-based features. By training on these features, our model learns physical boiling laws that statistically describe the manner in which bubbles nucleate, coalesce, and depart under boiling conditions, enabling in situ boiling curve prediction with a mean error of 6%. Our framework offers an automated, learning-based, alternative to conventional boiling heat transfer metrology.

Increasing Boiling Heat Transfer using Low Conductivity Materials.

Project description:We report the counterintuitive mechanism of increasing boiling heat transfer by incorporating low-conductivity materials at the interface between the surface and fluid. By embedding an array of non-conductive lines into a high-conductivity substrate, in-plane variations in the local surface temperature are created. During boiling the surface temperature varies spatially across the substrate, alternating between high and low values, and promotes the organization of distinct liquid and vapor flows. By systematically tuning the peak-to-peak wavelength of this spatial temperature variation, a resonance-like effect is seen at a value equal to the capillary length of the fluid. Replacing ~18% of the surface with a non-conductive epoxy results in a greater than 5x increase in heat transfer rate at a given superheat temperature. This drastic and counterintuitive increase is shown to be due to optimized bubble dynamics, where ordered pathways allow for efficient removal of vapor and the return of replenishing liquid. The use of engineered thermal gradients represents a potentially disruptive approach to create high-efficiency and high-heat-flux boiling surfaces which are naturally insensitive to fouling and degradation as compared to other approaches.

Capillary-Driven Boiling Heat Transfer on Superwetting Microgrooves.

Project description:Boiling can transfer a vast amount of heat and thereby is widely used for cooling advanced systems with high power density. However, the capillary force of most existing wicks is insufficient to surpass the liquid replenishing resistance for high-efficient boiling. Herein, we report a new microgroove wick on high-conductive copper substrates that was constructed via ultraviolet nanosecond pulsed laser milling. The phase explosion, combined with melting and resolidification effects of laser milling induces dense microcavities with sizes around several micrometers on the microgroove surface. The hierarchical microstructures significantly improve the wettability of the microgroove wicks to obtain strong capillary and meanwhile provide abundant effective nucleation sites. The boiling heat transfer in a visualized flat heat pipe shows that the new wicks enable sustainable liquid replenishing even under antigravity conditions, thus resulting in maximum 33-fold improvement of equivalent thermal conductivity when compared with the copper base. This research provides both scientific and technical bases for the design and manufacture of high-performance phase change cooling devices.

Deep learning based heat transfer simulation of the casting process.

Project description:To avoid the necessity of constitutional models, computational intensity, and the time-consuming nature inherent in numerical simulations, a pioneering approach utilizing deep learning techniques has been adopted to swiftly predict temperature fields during the solidification phase of casting processes. This methodology involves the development of rapid prediction models based on modified U-net network architectures, augmented by the integration of Inception and CBAM (Convolutional Block Attention Module) modules. The construction of the training set involved utilizing 200 diverse geometric models with each containing three kinds of components (casting, mold, and chill), where the temperature fields at a specific time, ti, were input data, while that of the subsequent time point, ti+1, served as the corresponding labels. The geometric models were generated by the erosion of 2D arbitrary shapes through an erosion method, and then their associated temperature fields were obtained via FDM-based numerical simulation. The trained deep learning models exhibit proficiency in promptly forecasting temperature fields during the solidification process for arbitrarily shaped castings at different times. The average accuracy of the predicted outcomes reaches 94.5% as the absolute temperature error set as 7 ℃ and the prediction just takes one second for a time step. Notably, these models are adept at handling multi-component with multi-materials within a geometry model, such as casting, chill, and mold corresponding to the intricate casting process.

Nanoparticle-Assisted Pool Boiling Heat Transfer on Micro-Pin-Fin Surfaces.

Project description:Boiling heat transfer intensification is of significant relevance to energy conversion and various cooling processes. This study aimed to enhance the saturated pool boiling of FC-72 (a dielectric liquid) by surface modifications and explore mechanisms of the enhancement. Specifically, circular and square micro pin fins were fabricated on silicon surfaces by dry etching and then copper nanoparticles were deposited on the micro-pin-fin surfaces by electrostatic deposition. Experimental results indicated that compared with a smooth surface, the micro pin fins increased the heat transfer coefficient and the critical heat flux by more than 200 and 65-83%, respectively, which were further enhanced by the nanoparticles up to 24% and more than 20%, respectively. Correspondingly, the enhancement mechanism was carefully explored by high-speed bubble visualizations, surface wickability measurements, and model analysis. It was quantitatively found that small bubble departure diameters with high bubble departure frequencies promoted high heat transfer coefficients. The wickability, which characterizes the ability of a liquid to rewet a surface, played an important role in determining the critical heat flux, but further analyses indicated that evaporation beneath bubbles was also essential and competition between the wicking and the evaporation finally triggered the critical heat flux.

Nano-inspired fluidic interactivity for boiling heat transfer: impact and criteria.

Project description:The enhancement of boiling heat transfer, the most powerful energy-transferring technology, will lead to milestones in the development of high-efficiency, next-generation energy systems. Perceiving nano-inspired interface functionalities from their rough morphologies, we demonstrate interface-induced liquid refreshing is essential to improve heat transfer by intrinsically avoiding Leidenfrost phenomenon. High liquid accessibility of hemi-wicking and catalytic nucleation, triggered by the morphological and hydrodynamic peculiarities of nano-inspired interfaces, contribute to the critical heat flux (CHF) and the heat transfer coefficient (HTC). Our experiments show CHF is a function of universal hydrodynamic characteristics involving interfacial liquid accessibility and HTC is improved with a higher probability of smaller nuclei with less superheat. Considering the interface-induced and bulk liquid accessibility at boiling, we discuss functionalizing the interactivity between an interface and a counteracting fluid seeking to create a novel interface, a so-called smart interface, for a breakthrough in boiling and its pragmatic application in energy systems.

Enhanced heat transfer is dependent on thickness of graphene films: the heat dissipation during boiling.

Project description:Boiling heat transfer (BHT) is a particularly efficient heat transport method because of the latent heat associated with the process. However, the efficiency of BHT decreases significantly with increasing wall temperature when the critical heat flux (CHF) is reached. Graphene has received much recent research attention for applications in thermal engineering due to its large thermal conductivity. In this study, graphene films of various thicknesses were deposited on a heated surface, and enhancements of BHT and CHF were investigated via pool-boiling experiments. In contrast to the well-known surface effects, including improved wettability and liquid spreading due to micron- and nanometer-scale structures, nanometer-scale folded edges of graphene films provided a clue of BHT improvement and only the thermal conductivity of the graphene layer could explain the dependence of the CHF on the thickness. The large thermal conductivity of the graphene films inhibited the formation of hot spots, thereby increasing the CHF. Finally, the provided empirical model could be suitable for prediction of CHF.

A heat transfer model for liquid film boiling on micro-structured surfaces.

Project description:High heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and critical heat flux (CHF) are achieved in liquid film boiling by coupling vibrant vapor bubbles with a capillary liquid film, which has thus received increased interest for thermal management of high-power electronics. Although some experimental progress has been made, a high-fidelity heat transfer model for liquid film boiling is lacking. This work develops a thermal-hydrodynamic model by considering both evaporation atop the wick and nucleate boiling inside the wick to simultaneously predict the HTC and CHF. Nucleate boiling is modeled with microlayer evaporation theory, where a unified scaling factor is defined to characterize the change of microlayer area with heat flux. The scaling factor η is found to be independent of wicking structure and can be determined from a few measurements. This makes our model universal to predict the liquid film boiling heat transfer for various micro-structured surfaces including micropillar, micropowder, and micromesh. This work not only sheds light on understanding fundamental mechanisms of phase-change heat transfer, but also provides a tool for designing micro-structured surfaces in thermal management.

Unveiling the fundamentals of flow boiling heat transfer enhancement on structured surfaces.

Project description:Micro- and nanostructured surfaces offer the potential to enhance two-phase heat transfer. However, the mechanisms behind these enhancements are not well-understood due to insufficient diagnostic methods, leading to reliance on trial-and-error surface development. We introduce in situ boroscopy to investigate microscale bubble dynamics during flow boiling nucleation and subsequent flow regime development. This method was applied in saturated flow boiling experiments within chemically etched aluminum and copper tubes. Although the surfaces have self-similar surface structures, our findings revealed varied heat transfer coefficient enhancements, with increases of up to 391% on aluminum and 41% on copper. Using boroscopy, we identified key mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement. We further used mercury porosimetry to determine the impact of pore size distribution on thermal performance. The boroscopy technique introduced here not only elucidates the underlying processes of flow boiling heat transfer enhancement but also has potential applications for the study of other two-phase phenomena.

Enhanced pool-boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux on femtosecond laser processed stainless steel surfaces.

Project description:In this paper, we present an experimental investigation of pool boiling heat transfer on multiscale (micro/nano) functionalized metallic surfaces. Heat transfer enhancement in metallic surfaces is very important for large scale high heat flux applications like in the nuclear power industry. The multiscale structures were fabricated via a femtosecond laser surface process (FLSP) technique, which forms self-organized mound-like microstructures covered by layers of nanoparticles. Using a pool boiling experimental setup with deionized water as the working fluid, both the heat transfer coefficients and critical heat flux were investigated. A polished reference sample was found to have a critical heat flux of 91 W/cm2 at 40 °C of superheat and a maximum heat transfer coefficient of 23,000 W/m2 K. The processed samples were found to have a maximum critical heat flux of 142 W/cm2 at 29 °C and a maximum heat transfer coefficient of 67,400 W/m2 K. It was found that the enhancement of the critical heat flux was directly related to the wetting and wicking ability of the surface which acts to replenish the evaporating liquid and delay critical heat flux. The heat transfer coefficients were also found to increase when the surface area ratio was increased as well as the microstructure peak-to-valley height. Enhanced nucleate boiling is the main heat transfer mechanism, and is attributed to an increase in surface area and nucleation site density.

Physics of microstructures enhancement of thin film evaporation heat transfer in microchannels flow boiling.

Project description:Performance enhancement of the two-phase flow boiling heat transfer process in microchannels through implementation of surface micro- and nanostructures has gained substantial interest in recent years. However, the reported results range widely from a decline to improvements in performance depending on the test conditions and fluid properties, without a consensus on the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed behavior. This gap in knowledge stems from a lack of understanding of the physics of surface structures interactions with microscale heat and mass transfer events involved in the microchannel flow boiling process. Here, using a novel measurement technique, the heat and mass transfer process is analyzed within surface structures with unprecedented detail. The local heat flux and dryout time scale are measured as the liquid wicks through surface structures and evaporates. The physics governing heat transfer enhancement on textured surfaces is explained by a deterministic model that involves three key parameters: the drying time scale of the liquid film wicking into the surface structures (τd), the heating length scale of the liquid film (δH) and the area fraction of the evaporating liquid film (Ar). It is shown that the model accurately predicts the optimum spacing between surface structures (i.e. pillars fabricated on the microchannel wall) in boiling of two fluids FC-72 and water with fundamentally different wicking characteristics.
