A Visible-Light Promoted Amine Oxidation Catalyzed by a Cp*Ir Complex.

ABSTRACT: Through a rapid screening of Cp*Ir complexes based on a turn-on type fluorescence readout, a [Cp*Ir(dipyrido[3,2-a : 2',3'-c]phenazine)Cl]⁺ complex was found to catalyze the blue-light promoted dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles under physiological conditions. In the dehydrogenation of tetrahydroisoquinolines, the catalyst preferentially yielded the monodehydrogenated product, accompanying H₂O₂ generation. We surmise that this mechanism may be reminiscent of flavin-dependent oxidases.

Cobalt-catalyzed aminocarbonylation of (hetero)aryl halides promoted by visible light.

Project description:The catalytic aminocarbonylation of (hetero)aryl halides is widely applied in the synthesis of amides but relies heavily on the use of precious metal catalysis. Herein, we report an aminocarbonylation of (hetero)aryl halides using a simple cobalt catalyst under visible light irradiation. The reaction extends to the use of (hetero)aryl chlorides and is successful with a broad range of amine nucleophiles. Mechanistic investigations are consistent with a reaction proceeding via intermolecular charge transfer involving a donor-acceptor complex of the substrate and cobaltate catalyst.

Visible-light-promoted and chlorophyll-catalyzed aerobic desulfurization of thioamides to amides.

Project description:A novel method for the metal-free synthesis of amides from thioamides based on visible-light photoredox catalysis and in an air atmosphere is reported. Natural pigment chlorophyll is used as a photosensitizer to generate singlet molecular oxygen 1O2, which is involved in the aerobic desulfurization of thioamides. The protocol provides amides in good yields at room temperature under mild conditions. On the basis of experimental results, a plausible photoredox mechanism is proposed.

Visible-Light-Promoted Iridium(III)-Catalyzed Acceptorless Dehydrogenation of N-Heterocycles at Room Temperature.

Project description:An effective visible-light-promoted iridium(III)-catalyzed hydrogen production from N-heterocycles is described. A single iridium complex constitutes the photocatalytic system playing a dual task, harvesting visible-light and facilitating C-H cleavage and H2 formation at room temperature and without additives. The presence of a chelating C-N ligand combining a mesoionic carbene ligand along with an amido functionality in the IrIII complex is essential to attain the photocatalytic transformation. Furthermore, the IrIII complex is also an efficient catalyst for the thermal reverse process under mild conditions, positioning itself as a proficient candidate for liquid organic hydrogen carrier technologies (LOHCs). Mechanistic studies support a light-induced formation of H2 from the Ir-H intermediate as the operating mode of the iridium complex.

Properties of Amine-Containing Ligands That Are Necessary for Visible-Light-Promoted Catalysis with Divalent Europium.

Project description:We describe a study of the influence of amine-containing ligands on the photoredox-relevant properties of EuII toward the rational design of EuII-containing catalysts for visible-light-promoted photoredox reactions. We report our observations of the effects of the degree of functionalization of amines, denticity, and macrocylic ligands on the absorbance of EuII. Ligands that contain secondary amines bathochromically shift the absorbance of EuCl2 relative to ligands that contain primary or tertiary amines. Similarly, ligands of larger denticity have a larger bathochromic shift of the absorbance than ligands of smaller denticity. We observed that macrocyclic ligands have a larger effect on the absorbance of EuCl2 than nonmacrocyclic ligands. Also, we report the photoredox reactivity of four new EuII-containing complexes. These observations are potentially influential in understanding the ligand properties that promote the use of EuII in visible-light-promoted photoredox catalysis.

Visible light-promoted metal-free C-H activation: diarylketone-catalyzed selective benzylic mono- and difluorination.

Project description:We report herein an operationally simple method for the direct conversion of benzylic C-H groups to C-F. We show that visible light can activate diarylketones to abstract a benzylic hydrogen atom selectively. Adding a fluorine radical donor yields the benzylic fluoride and regenerates the catalyst. The selective formation of mono- and difluorination products can be achieved by catalyst control. 9-Fluorenone catalyzes benzylic C-H monofluorination, while xanthone catalyzes benzylic C-H difluorination. The scope and efficiency of this new C-H fluorination method are significantly better than those of the existing methods. This is also the first report of selective C-H gem-difluorination.

An Ir(III) Complex Photosensitizer With Strong Visible Light Absorption for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction.

Project description:A cyclometalated iridium(III) complex having 2-(pyren-1-yl)-4-methylquinoline ligands [Ir(pyr)] has a strong absorption band in the visible region (ε444nm = 67,000 M-1 cm-1) but does not act as a photosensitizer for photochemical reduction reactions in the presence of triethylamine as an electron donor. Here, 1,3-dimethyl-2-(o-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BI(OH)H) was used instead of the amine, demonstrating that BI(OH)H efficiently quenched the excited state of Ir(pyr) and can undergo the photochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction catalyzed by trans(Cl)-Ru(dmb)(CO)2Cl2 (dmb = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine, Ru) to produce formate as the main product. We also synthesized a binuclear complex combining Ir(pyr) and Ru via an ethylene bridge and investigated its photochemical CO2 reduction activity in the presence of BI(OH)H.

Tertiary amine mediated aerobic oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides by visible-light photoredox catalysis on TiO2.

Project description:The selective oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides receives much attention due to industrial and biological applications. However, the realization of this reaction with molecular oxygen at room temperature, which is of importance towards green and sustainable chemistry, remains challenging. Herein, we develop a strategy to achieve the aerobic oxidation of sulfides into sulfoxides by exploring the synergy between a tertiary amine and titanium dioxide via visible-light photoredox catalysis. Specifically, titanium dioxide can interact with triethylamine (TEA) to form a visible-light harvesting surface complex, preluding the ensuing selective redox reaction. Moreover, TEA, whose stability was demonstrated by a turnover number of 32, plays a critical role as a redox mediator by shuttling electrons during the oxidation of sulfide. This work suggests that the addition of a redox mediator is highly functional in establishing visible-light-induced reactions via heterogeneous photoredox catalysis.

Visible light sensitizer-catalyzed highly selective photo oxidation from thioethers into sulfoxides under aerobic condition.

Project description:We report herein a visible light sensitizer-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of thioethers, affording sulfoxides in good to excellent yields. The loading of the catalyst was as low as 0.1 mol%. The selectivity was excellent. Mechanism studies showed both singlet oxygen and superoxide radical anion were likely involved in this transformation.
