Perception on Online Teaching and Learning Among Health Sciences Students in Higher Education Institutions during the COVID-19 Lockdown - Ways to Improve Teaching and Learning in Saudi Colleges and Universities.

ABSTRACT: Background: Online learning or E-learning are approaches to broadcasting teaching by the means of internet technology and software applications. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is likewise embarking on the rapid growth in online education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the student's perceptions regarding online teaching and learning during COVID 19. Methods: An online computer-based cross-sectional study was conducted between May and June 2020. A pre-validated questionnaire was used and administrated to health sciences students studying at Dammam Universities through online software QuestionPro. Results: Out of total 281, 68% of the participants were females (n=188) while 31.9% (n=88) were male students with an average age of 23.1(4.5) years. Overall, 176 (62%) of the students expressed their satisfaction with online learning. Conclusion: Findings will help academicians to identify strengths, areas of improvement, and encourage faculty to think deeply to restructure course learning objectives, teaching techniques to engage students and improve learning process.

Project description:This study examined lecturers' teaching competencies at universities in the attempt to improve the teaching and learning process by considering students' perspectives. Specifically, the study examined indicators of lecturers' teaching competencies in universities as well as establishing whether there is a relationship between students' perceived lecturers' teaching competencies and students' demographic parameters. The study used a cross-sectional survey design to generate data from 422 undergraduate students from three public universities in Tanzania using a questionnaire. Means, standard deviations, percentages and the independent T-test were used to analyse data. Experts and peer reviews were carried out to determine the validity of the study. The study's reliability was assessed using Cronbach Alpha in which content competency = 0.889, pedagogical competency = 0.809, assessment and evaluation skills = 0.701, and technological competency = 0.777 show acceptance of theoretical constructs. From the findings, students perceived content, pedagogical, assessment and technological competencies are key indicators of lecturers' teaching competencies that improve the teaching and learning process. Based on demographic factors, there was no relationship among the four variables. These findings imply that university lecturers are required to possess and master the perceived competencies and see how best they connect these competencies to students' needs, beliefs and aspirations during their teaching processes. Thus, in designing their lesson, lecturers have to consider the four teaching competencies, which in turn may improve students' performance. The study recommends a policy guideline by the Tanzania Commission for Universities for academicians to undergo training on assessment, pedagogy and technology. This will help lecturers to develop a common understanding of the teaching competencies and maintain teaching quality. Furthermore, universities should mobilize their resources and set aside enough funds to buy ICT facilities so that lecturers can easily integrate technology into their teaching processes so as to meet the current demand for technological advancement.

Project description:IntroductionThis study aimed to explore the factors that contribute to sustaining the motivation of teachers in medical science universities.Materials and methodsThis qualitative content analysis study was conducted from August 2019 to May 2021. Thirty-seven in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers from medical sciences universities in Iran, selected through purposive sampling. The conventional content analysis approach was employed to analyze the data. The process involved five steps, including identifying meaning units, condensing them, assigning codes, establishing categories and subcategories, and identifying overarching themes.ResultsThe teachers' experiences were explored into 'establishing pathways to excellence in the teaching profession'. Three categories 'engagement with continuous personal and professional development', 'autonomy for exploration', and 'pleasure in the teaching profession' were explored as the factors that contribute to the sustaining of teachers' motivation. Teachers' motivation is sustained through their engagement in continuous personal and professional development, which promotes a sense of growth and mastery. Autonomy for exploration is also a critical factor, as it enables teachers to take ownership of their work, and innovate without restrictions, thereby sustaining their job motivation. Furthermore, the pleasure derived from the teaching profession, encompassing the enjoyment of teaching, sense of self-worth, and fulfillment, plays a vital role in sustaining teachers' motivation and driving their pursuit of excellence.ConclusionThe teachers' experiences were explored into a theme of 'establishing pathways to excellence in the teaching profession'. The results revealed that engagement in exploration and continuous personal and professional development contributed to the sustained motivation of teachers. Teachers who pursued the excellence pathway reported a sense of fulfillment and pleasure in their teaching profession, which was facilitated by their involvement in the process. Moreover, collaboration with others catalyzes personal and professional growth, thereby fostering sustained motivation among educators.
