Multifunctional Bioplastics Inspired by Wood Composition: Effect of Hydrolyzed Lignin Addition to Xylan-Cellulose Matrices.

ABSTRACT: Multifunctional bioplastics have been prepared by amorphous reassembly of cellulose, hemicelluloses (xylan), and hydrolyzed lignin. For this, the biopolymers were dissolved in a trifluoroacetic acid-trifluoroacetic anhydride mixture and blended in different percentages, simulating those found in natural woods. Free-standing and flexible films were obtained after the complete evaporation of the solvents. By varying xylan and hydrolyzed lignin contents, the physical properties were easily tuned. In particular, higher proportions of hydrolyzed lignin improved hydrodynamics, oxygen barrier, grease resistance, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties, whereas a higher xylan content was related to more ductile mechanical behavior, comparable to synthetic and bio-based polymers commonly used for packaging applications. In addition, these bioplastics showed high biodegradation rates in seawater. Such new polymeric materials are presented as alternatives to common man-made petroleum-based plastics used for food packaging.

Project description:Cellulose materials and products are frequently affected by environmental factors such as light, temperature, and humidity. Simulated UV irradiation, heat, and moisture exposure were comprehensively used to characterize changes in cellulose nanopaper (NP) tensile properties. For the preparation of NP, high-purity cellulose from old, unused filter paper waste was used. Lignin and xylan were used as sustainable green interface engineering modifiers for NP due to their structural compatibility, low price, nontoxic nature, and abundance as a by-product of biomass processing, as well as their ability to protect cellulose fibers from UV irradiation. Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) suspension was obtained by microfluidizing cellulose suspension, and NP was produced by casting films from water suspensions. The use of filler from 1 to 30 wt% significantly altered NP properties. All nanopapers were tested for their sensitivity to water humidity, which reduced mechanical properties from 10 to 40% depending on the saturation level. Xylan addition showed a significant increase in the specific elastic modulus and specific strength by 1.4- and 2.8-fold, respectively. Xylan-containing NPs had remarkable resistance to UV irradiation, retaining 50 to 90% of their initial properties. Lignin-modified NPs resulted in a decreased mechanical performance due to the particle structure of the filler and the agglomeration process, but it was compensated by good property retention and enhanced elongation. The UV oxidation process of the NP interface was studied with UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, which showed that the degradation of lignin and xylan preserves a cellulose fiber structure. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed the structural formation of the interface and supplemented understanding of UV aging impact on the surface and penetration depth in the cross-section. The ability to overcome premature aging in environmental factors can significantly benefit the wide adaption of NP in food packaging and functional applications.

Project description:IntroductionWood digestion in insects relies on the maintenance of a mosaic of numerous microhabitats, each colonized by distinct microbiomes. Understanding the division of digestive labor between these microhabitats- is central to understanding the physiology and evolution of symbiotic wood digestion. A microhabitat that has emerged to be of direct relevance to the process of lignocellulose digestion is the surface of ingested plant material. Wood particles in the guts of some termites are colonized by a specialized bacterial fiber-digesting microbiome, but whether this represents a widespread strategy among insect lineages that have independently evolved wood-feeding remains an open question.MethodsIn this study, we investigated the bacterial communities specifically associated with wood fibers in the gut of the passalid beetle Odontotaenius disjunctus. We developed a Percoll-based centrifugation method to isolate and enrich the wood particles from the anterior hindgut, allowing us to access the wood fibers and their associated microbiome. We then performed assays of enzyme activity and used short-read and long-read amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene to identify the composition of the fiber-associated microbiome.ResultsOur assays demonstrated that the anterior hindgut, which houses a majority of the bacterial load, is an important site for lignocellulose digestion. Wood particles enriched from the anterior hindgut contribute to a large proportion of the total enzyme activity. The sequencing revealed that O. disjunctus, like termites, harbors a distinct fiber-associated microbiome, but notably, its community is enriched in insect-specific groups of Lactococcus and Turicibacter.DiscussionOur study underscores the importance of microhabitats in fostering the complex symbiotic relationships between wood-feeding insects and their microbiomes. The discovery of distinct fiber-digesting symbionts in O. disjunctus, compared to termites, highlights the diverse evolutionary paths insects have taken to adapt to a challenging diet.

Project description:We describe here the fabrication, characterization, and properties of tough bioplastics made of a babassu oil-based acrylic polymer (PBBM), hemicellulose xylan grafted with PBBM chains, and carnauba wax (CW). The plastic was primarily designed to obtain bioderived materials that can replace low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in certain food packaging applications. To obtain plastic, the radical polymerization of an original babassu oil-based acrylic monomer (BBM) in the presence of xylan macromolecules modified with maleic anhydride (X-MA) was conducted. The polymerization resulted in a material (PBBM-X) mostly consisting of highly branched PBBM/X-MA macromolecules. PBBM-X has a glass transition of 42 °C, a storage modulus of 130 MPa (at 25 °C, RT), and a Young’s modulus of 30 MPa at RT. To increase the moduli, we blended PBBM-X with carnauba wax, a natural material with a high modulus and a melting temperature of ~80 °C. It was found that PBBM-X is compatible with the wax, as evidenced by the alternation of the material’s thermal transitions and the co-crystallization of BBM side alkyl fragments with CW. As a result, the PBBM-X/CW blend containing 40% of the wax had a storage modulus of 475 MPa (RT) and a Young’s modulus of 248 MPa (RT), which is close to that of LDPE. As polyethylene, the PBBM-X and PBBM-X/CW bioplastics have the typical stress-strain behavior demonstrated by ductile (tough) plastics. However, the bioplastic’s yield strength and elongation-at-yield are considerably lower than those of LDPE. We evaluated the moisture barrier properties of the PBBM-X/(40%)CW material and found that the bioplastic’s water vapor permeability (WVP) is quite close to that of LDPE. Our bioderived material demonstrates a WVP that is comparable to polyethylene terephthalate and lower than the WVP of nylon and polystyrene. Taking into account the obtained results, the fabricated materials can be considered as polyethylene alternatives to provide sustainability in plastics production in the packaging areas where LDPE currently dominates.
