A Study on the Effect of Flow Unsteadiness on the Yield of a Chemical Reaction in a T Micro-Reactor.

ABSTRACT: Despite the very simple geometry and the laminar flow, T-shaped microreactors have been found to be characterized by different and complex steady and unsteady flow regimes, depending on the Reynolds number. In particular, flow unsteadiness modifies strongly the mixing process; however, little is known on how this change may affect the yield of a chemical reaction. In the present work, experiments and 3-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out jointly to analyze mixing and reaction in a T-shaped microreactor with the ultimate goal to investigate how flow unsteadiness affects the reaction yield. The onset of the unsteady asymmetric regime enhances the reaction yield by more than 30%; however, a strong decrease of the yield back to values typical of the vortex regime is observed when the flow undergoes a transition to the unsteady symmetric regime.

Project description:Acetylene gas has been applied as a feedstock under transition-metal catalysis and photo-redox conditions to produce important chemicals including terminal alkynes, fulvenes, and fluorinated styrene compounds. The reaction discovery process was accelerated through the use of "stop-flow" micro-tubing reactors. This reactor prototype was developed by joining elements from both continuous micro-flow and conventional batch reactors, which was convenient and effective for gas/liquid reaction screening. Notably, the developed transformations were either inefficient or unsuccessful in conventional batch reactors. Its success relies on the unique advantages provided by this "stop-flow" micro-tubing reactor system.

Synthesis of Micro-/Nanohydroxyapatite Assisted by the Taylor-Couette Flow Reactor.

Project description:Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has received increasing attention as an essential chemical product with good biocompatibility and adsorption properties. Generally, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) was generated first in the reactor and transformed into HAP after a period of crystallization. In this work, a series of Taylor-Couette flow reactors with different inner diameters were designed to assist in synthesizing HAP micro-/nanocrystals. ACP was obtained in a Taylor-Couette flow reactor at Re = 247 and successfully transformed into needle-like HAP crystals with a length of about 200 nm and a uniform particle size distribution after crystallization transformation. The yield of a single reactor can reach 2.16 kg per day. The finite element analysis results and time-space diagram of flow pattern variation showed that the Taylor-Couette flow reactor could improve the mixing behavior and the flow field distribution. The Taylor-Couette flow reactor provides a valuable reference for synthesizing inorganic micro-/nanomaterials.

Renewable Wood Pulp Paper Reactor with Hierarchical Micro/Nanopores for Continuous-Flow Nanocatalysis.

Project description:Continuous-flow nanocatalysis based on metal nanoparticle catalyst-anchored flow reactors has recently provided an excellent platform for effective chemical manufacturing. However, there has been limited progress in porous structure design and recycling systems for metal nanoparticle-anchored flow reactors to create more efficient and sustainable catalytic processes. In this study, traditional paper is used for a highly efficient, recyclable, and even renewable flow reactor by tailoring the ultrastructures of wood pulp. The "paper reactor" offers hierarchically interconnected micro- and nanoscale pores, which can act as convective-flow and rapid-diffusion channels, respectively, for efficient access of reactants to metal nanoparticle catalysts. In continuous-flow, aqueous, room-temperature catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-anchored paper reactor with hierarchical micro/nanopores provided higher reaction efficiency than state-of-the-art AuNP-anchored flow reactors. Inspired by traditional paper materials, successful recycling and renewal of AuNP-anchored paper reactors were also demonstrated while high reaction efficiency was maintained.

Directional growth of octacalcium phosphate using micro-flow reactor mixing and subsequent aging.

Project description:Well-defined belt-shaped particles of octacalcium phosphate were prepared by mixing aqueous solutions of calcium acetate and that of sodium phosphate monobasic with the aid of a micro-flow reactor. Higher crystallinity and narrower particle size distribution were achieved by the micro-flow reactor if compared with the results of the batch reaction using the same solutions. The width of the belt was controlled by the mixing temperature (0.8 and 2.3 μm for the preparation at 50 and 70 °C, respectively). Post mixing aging at 50 °C, resulted in the directional growth of belt-shaped particles to obtain particles with the length of 17 μm (aspect ratio of 53). XRD and TEM analysis indicated that the micro-flow reactor could separate nucleation and growth allowing preferential growth along the a-direction.

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Synthesis Yield Variation in a Horizontal Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor.

Project description:The controlled synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is essential for their industrial application. This study investigates the synthesis yield of SWNTs, which depends on the positions of the samples on a horizontal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system. Methane and Fe thin films were used as the feedstock and catalyst for SWNTs synthesis, respectively. A high-resolution scanning electron microscope was used to examine the synthesis yield variation of the SWNTs along the axial distance of the reactor. The morphology and crystallinity of the fabricated SWNTs were evaluated by atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. We observed that the highest synthesis yield of the SWNTs was obtained in the rear region of the horizontal reactor, and not the central region. These results can be applied to the synthesis of various low-dimensional nanomaterials, such as semiconducting nanowires and transition metal dichalcogenides, especially when a horizontal CVD chamber is used.

Continuous flowing micro-reactor for aqueous reaction at temperature higher than 100 °C.

Project description:Some aqueous reactions in biological or chemical fields are accomplished at a high temperature. When the reaction temperature is higher than 100 °C, an autoclave reactor is usually required to elevate the boiling point of the water by creating a high-pressure environment in a closed system. This work presented an alternative continuous flowing microfluidic solution for aqueous reaction with a reaction temperature higher than 100 °C. The pressure regulating function was successfully fulfilled by a small microchannel based on a delicate hydrodynamic design. Combined with micro heater and temperature sensor that integrated in a single chip by utilizing silicon-based microfabrication techniques, this pressure regulating microchannel generated a high-pressure/high-temperature environment in the upstream reaction zone when the reagents continuously flow through the chip. As a preliminary demonstration, thermal digestion of aqueous total phosphorus sample was achieved in this continuous flowing micro-reactor at a working pressure of 990 kPa (under the working flow rate of 20 nl/s) along with a reaction temperature of 145 °C. This continuous flowing microfluidic solution for high-temperature reaction may find applications in various micro total analysis systems.

Chemical Kinetics Investigations of Dibutyl Ether Isomers Oxidation in a Laminar Flow Reactor.

Project description:The combustion kinetics of three symmetric diesel-boiling-range ether isomers were investigated experimentally using a plug flow reactor. The isomers were di-n-butyl ether (DNBE), diisobutyl ether (DIBE), and di-sec-butyl ether (DSBE). The flow reactor experiments employed oxygen as the oxidizer and helium as the diluent, with oxidation carried out at atmospheric and elevated pressure conditions and temperatures from 400 to 1000 at 20 K intervals. The fuel, oxidizer, and diluent flow rates were varied at different temperatures to maintain a constant initial fuel mole fraction of 1000 ppm under stoichiometric conditions and a residence time of 2 s. Reaction products were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC). Depending on the structure, ethers showed different degrees of negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behavior. Speciation results from the GC analysis were then compared to simulations using existing and newly developed chemical kinetic models. Most of the simulated product concentrations showed reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The chemical kinetic models were utilized to elucidate key features of the reactivity and NTC behavior of the different isomers. The chemical kinetic analysis indicates that the combustion behaviors of the three isomers are influenced by the key species formed at the low-temperature reaction regime. The key species identified for DNBE, DIBE, and DSBE at atmospheric pressure are n-butanal, isobutanal, and sec-butanol, respectively.

Kinetics Studies on a Multicomponent Knoevenagel-Michael Domino Reaction by an Automated Flow Reactor.

Project description:The optimization of complex chemical reaction systems is often a troublesome and time-consuming process. The application of modern technologies, including automated reactors and analytics, opens the avenue for generating large data sets on chemical reaction processes in a short period of time. In this work, an automated flow reactor is used to present detailed kinetics and mechanistic studies about an amine-catalyzed Knoevenagel-Michael domino reaction to yield tetrahydrochromene derivatives. High-performance monoliths as catalyst supports and online coupled HPLC analysis allow for time-efficient data generation. We show that the two-step multicomponent domino reaction does not follow the kinetics of consecutive reaction steps proceeding independently from each other. Instead, the starting materials of both individual reactions compete for the active sites on the heterogeneous catalyst, which lowers the rate constants of both steps. This knowledge was used to implement a more efficient experimental setup which increased the turnover numbers of the catalyst, without adjusting common reaction parameters like temperature, reaction time, and concentrations.

Improving chemical reaction yield prediction using pre-trained graph neural networks.

Project description:Graph neural networks (GNNs) have proven to be effective in the prediction of chemical reaction yields. However, their performance tends to deteriorate when they are trained using an insufficient training dataset in terms of quantity or diversity. A promising solution to alleviate this issue is to pre-train a GNN on a large-scale molecular database. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of GNN pre-training in chemical reaction yield prediction. We present a novel GNN pre-training method for performance improvement.Given a molecular database consisting of a large number of molecules, we calculate molecular descriptors for each molecule and reduce the dimensionality of these descriptors by applying principal component analysis. We define a pre-text task by assigning a vector of principal component scores as the pseudo-label to each molecule in the database. A GNN is then pre-trained to perform the pre-text task of predicting the pseudo-label for the input molecule. For chemical reaction yield prediction, a prediction model is initialized using the pre-trained GNN and then fine-tuned with the training dataset containing chemical reactions and their yields. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method through experimental evaluation on benchmark datasets.

High yield and high specific activity synthesis of [18F]fallypride in a batch microfluidic reactor for micro-PET imaging.

Project description:[(18)F]fallypride was synthesized in a batch microfluidic chip with a radiochemical yield of 65 ± 6% (n = 7) and an average specific activity of 730 GBq ?mol(-1) (20 Ci ?mol(-1)) (n = 4). Specific activity was ~2-fold higher than [(18)F]fallypride synthesized in a macroscale radiosynthesizer, despite starting with significantly less radioactivity, and thus safer conditions, in the microchip.
