Suicide among Polish Adolescents-A 20 Year Analysis.

ABSTRACT: The study aimed to analyze the burden and territorial diversification of adolescent suicide and the link between suicide attempts and selected socioeconomic variables in Poland. Rates of suicide by voivodeships for years 1999-2019 were obtained from the General Police Headquarters of Poland database. The burden of premature death was expressed in years of life lost (YLL) and costs of lost productivity, which were estimated using the human capital approach. The link between suicide rates and socioeconomic determinants has been analyzed with Pearson's correlation coefficient. Over the analyzed period, an increase in suicide attempt rates and a decrease in suicide death rates have been observed. Mean YLL and costs of lost productivity per year amounted to 11,982 and 153,172,415 PLN, respectively. Territorial diversification in suicide attempt rates corresponds to the living condition, poverty, association-based capital, and satisfaction with family situation in individual voivodeships. The number of deaths due to suicide is negatively correlated with an indicator of good living conditions. Our findings provide quantitative evidence of the national impact of suicide and suggest that addressing social capital and poverty may have a role in preventing adolescent mortality due to suicide.

Project description:Objectives: To analyze the research hotspots, evolution, and trends of the treatment of liver fibrosis in the recent 20 years, bibliometric and knowledge-map analysis were used. Methods: Publications associated with the treatment of liver fibrosis were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection on 16 April 2022. CiteSpace 5.8.R3 and VOSviewer 1.6.18 were calculated to perform bibliometric and knowledge-map analysis. Results: A total of 72,686 authors from 200 institutions in 134 countries/regions published 15,237 studies in different academic journals. United States was the most productive country, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University was the most published institution. Trauner Michael had the most published articles, whereas Scott L. Friedman was the most frequently co-cited author. Moreover, there was frequent inter-institution cooperation between countries in the years 2015 and after, but the before years showed rare inter-institution cooperation. The journal HEPATOLOGY was both the most published publication and the most frequently co-cited one in this field. Screened keywords, such as virus infection, inflammation, oxidative stress, activation of hepatic stellate cell (HSC), and hepatocellular apoptosis, could be both therapeutic targets and pathological mechanisms in terms of liver fibrosis. Furthermore, long-term suppression of hepatitis B virus replication and the activation of HSC were the latest hotspots and topics related to the treatment of liver fibrosis. Besides, the treatments of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis were also involved in the treatment of liver fibrosis, which were both emerging topics and rapidly developing hot fields. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis conducted a full overview of the treatment of liver fibrosis, which provided important clues and ideas for scholars focusing on this field. Not only that, the field is still in a stage of rapid development and will continue to be a research hotspot in the future.

Project description:BackgroundWhile there are many studies on adolescents' suicide attempts in the western countries, studies on adolescent suicide in South Korea are relatively scarce. We compared demographical and clinical variables between the first and multiple suicide attempters and examined potential risk factors predicting multiple suicide attempts.MethodsTwo hundred forty-eight suicide attempters aged from 11 to 19 years old who visited emergency department of Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital, South Korea were recruited and divided into two groups: first attempter (n = 139, 56%) and multiple attempter (n = 109, 44%). A psychiatric interview with the Brief Emergency Room Suicide Risk Assessment were administered to all participants, and univariate analyses to compare characteristics of the two group and a multivariable logistic regression analysis to predict multiple suicidal attempts were performed.ResultsOur results showed multiple suicide attempters were mostly female (78%), more severe in psychopathology (e.g., higher rate of psychiatric family history, diagnosis of axis I history, history of major depressive disorder, higher feeling of hopelessness/helplessness) and suicidality (e.g., repetitive/severe/continuous suicide ideation, lower regret for suicide attempt). Moreover, multiple suicide attempters were lower in psychiatric resources, such as lower personal achievement, lower ability to control emotion, and less insight. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that suicide ideation severity (odds ratio [OR], 2.30; P = 0.004), past history of axis I diagnosis (especially major depressive disorder; OR, 2.55; P = 0.002), and the use of "cutting" (OR, 2.85; P = 0.001) predicted multiple suicide attempts.ConclusionThe present study suggests that multiple suicide attempters tend to have more severe clinical profiles than the first suicide attempters. Intervention for depression and self-mutilation behavior of suicide attempters may be important in preventing multiple suicide attempts of adolescents.
