Tunable infrared metamaterial-based biosensor for detection of hemoglobin and urine using phase change material.

ABSTRACT: This paper reports about the outcomes from an investigation carried out on tunable biosensor for detection using infrared in the range of 1.5 µm and 1.65 µm. The biosensor is made of phase change material formed by different alloy combinations, Ge₂Sb₂Te₅ (GST). The nature of GST allows for the material to change phase with changes in temperature, giving the tunable sensing property for biosensing application. Sensor built with amorphous GST (aGST) and crystalline GST (cGST) in different design structures were tested on different concentrations of biomolecules: hemoglobin (10 g/l, 20 g/l, 30 g/l and 40 g/l); and urine (0-1.5 mg/dL, 2.5 mg/dL, 5 mg/dL and 10 mg/dL). The tunable response observed from the tests demonstrates the potential application of the materials in the design of switching and sensing systems.

Tunable Infrared Detection, Radiative Cooling and Infrared-Laser Compatible Camouflage Based on a Multifunctional Nanostructure with Phase-Change Material.

Project description:The nanostructure composed of nanomaterials and subwavelength units offers flexible design freedom and outstanding advantages over conventional devices. In this paper, a multifunctional nanostructure with phase-change material (PCM) is proposed to achieve tunable infrared detection, radiation cooling and infrared (IR)-laser compatible camouflage. The structure is very simple and is modified from the classic metal-dielectric-metal (MIM) multilayer film structure. We innovatively composed the top layer of metals with slits, and introduced a non-volatile PCM Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) for selective absorption/radiation regulation. According to the simulation results, wide-angle and polarization-insensitive dual-band infrared detection is realized in the four-layer structure. The transformation from infrared detection to infrared stealth is realized in the five-layer structure, and laser stealth is realized in the atmospheric window by electromagnetic absorption. Moreover, better radiation cooling is realized in the non-atmospheric window. The proposed device can achieve more than a 50% laser absorption rate at 10.6 μm while ensuring an average infrared emissivity below 20%. Compared with previous works, our proposed multifunctional nanostructures can realize multiple applications with a compact structure only by changing the temperature. Such ultra-thin, integratable and multifunctional nanostructures have great application prospects extending to various fields such as electromagnetic shielding, optical communication and sensing.

Tunable parity-time symmetry vortex laser from a phase change material-based microcavity.

Project description:Traditional light sources cannot emit an electromagnetic (EM) field with an orbital angular momentum (OAM), limiting their applications in modern optics. The recent development of the OAM laser, mainly based on micro- and nanostructures, can satisfy the increasing requirements for on-chip photonics and information capacities. Nevertheless, the photonic structures have fixed parameters that prevent these OAM lasers from being dynamically tuned. Here, we propose tunable vortex lasing from a microring cavity integrated by a phase change material, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST225). By modulating the complex refractive index to create an exceptional point (EP) to break the degeneracy of whispering gallery modes with opposite orientations, the microlaser working at the EP can impart an artificial angular momentum, thus emitting vortex beams with well-defined OAM. The grating scatter on the edge of the microring can provide efficient vertical radiation. The vortex laser wavelength from the GST225/InGaAsP dual-layered microring cavity can be dynamically tuned by switching the state of GST225 between amorphous and crystalline without changing the microring geometry. We construct an electric-thermal model to show the tuning range of operating wavelengths (EPs) from 1544.5 to 1565.9 nm in ~25 ns. Our study on high-speed tunable PT-symmetry vortex lasers facilitates the next generation of integrated optoelectronic devices for optical computing and communications in both classical and quantum regions.

A Tunable Triple-Band Near-Infrared Metamaterial Absorber Based on Au Nano-Cuboids Array.

Project description:In this article, we present a design for a triple-band tunable metamaterial absorber with an Au nano-cuboids array, and undertake numerical research about its optical properties and local electromagnetic field enhancement. The proposed structure is investigated by the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method, and we find that it has triple-band tunable perfect absorption peaks in the near infrared band (1000-2500 nm). We investigate some of structure parameters that influence the fields of surface plasmons (SP) resonances of the nano array structure. By adjusting the relevant structural parameters, we can accomplish the regulation of the surface plasmons resonance (SPR) peaks. In addition, the triple-band resonant wavelength of the absorber has good operational angle-polarization-tolerance. We believe that the excellent properties of our designed absorber have promising applications in plasma-enhanced photovoltaic, optical absorption switching and infrared modulator optical communication.

Metamaterial Absorbers for Infrared Detection of Molecular Self-Assembled Monolayers.

Project description:The emerging field of plasmonic metamaterials has introduced new degree of freedom to manipulate optical field from nano to macroscopic scale, offering an attractive platform for sensing applications. So far, metamaterial sensor concepts, however, have focused on hot-spot engineering to improve the near-field enhancement, rather than fully exploiting tailored material properties. Here, we present a novel spectroscopic technique based on the metamaterial infrared (IR) absorber allowing for a low-background detection scheme as well as significant plasmonic enhancement. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrate the resonant coupling of plasmonic modes of a metamaterial absorber and IR vibrational modes of a molecular self-assembled monolayer. The metamaterial consisting of an array of Au/MgF2/Au structures exhibits an anomalous absorption at ~ 3000 cm(-1), which spectrally overlaps with C-H stretching vibrational modes. Symmetric/asymmetric C-H stretching modes of a 16-Mercaptohexadecanoic acid monolayer are clearly observed as Fano-like anti-resonance peaks within a broad plasmonic absorption of the metamaterial. Spectral analysis using Fano line-shape fitting reveals the underlying resonant interference in plasmon-molecular coupled systems. Our metamaterial approach achieves the attomole sensitivity with a large signal-to-noise ratio in the far-field measurement, thus may open up new avenues for realizing ultrasensitive IR inspection technologies.

CMOS compatible novel integration solution for broad range tunable photodetection using phase-change material based heterostructures.

Project description:Heterostructures (HS) have always been in attraction due to their inherited properties and different important applications. Integration of a phase-change material (PCM) with HS can tremendously extend the operating and application range using the "phase-tuning" of PCM for any optoelectronic devices. In the present study, we report a detailed study of electrical and optoelectronic characteristics of a p-p and p-n HS combining Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) and Si. Reasonable 2 order of resistance switching is achieved by thermal annealing. The changes in optical properties are analysed using Ellipsometry, UV-Vis-NIR and Raman spectroscopy to speculate the optoelectronic behaviour of GST/Si samples. The optical and electrical characterization were analysed with aluminium (Al), platinum (Pt) and Ti/Au contacts. Appreciable rectifications varying from 500 to 1,000 at lower voltages are achieved with different contacts for both phases of GST. The change in rectification amount and current polarity are obtained with different kinds of contacts and at different incident wavelengths indicating different mechanisms of charge separation and collection. Responsivity of more than 9 A/W with < 1,000 photo-current to dark-current ratio is demonstrated in wavelength range of 0.8-2 μm under moderate range of biasing under ~ μW source power illumination. The characteristics obtained were justified with the prediction of band alignment with the help of work-function difference measurement by Kelvin-probe force microscopy and carrier density measurement by Hall experiment. Our results provide understanding to the opto-electrical behaviour of a heterojunction made of stacking PCM (GST) on Si highlighting their future use in photonic/optoelectronic-integrated circuits.

Colloidal Ternary Telluride Quantum Dots for Tunable Phase Change Optics in the Visible and Near-Infrared.

Project description:A structural change between amorphous and crystalline phase provides a basis for reliable and modular photonic and electronic devices, such as nonvolatile memory, beam steerers, solid-state reflective displays, or mid-IR antennas. In this paper, we leverage the benefits of liquid-based synthesis to access phase-change memory tellurides in the form of colloidally stable quantum dots. We report a library of ternary MxGe1-xTe colloids (where M is Sn, Bi, Pb, In, Co, Ag) and then showcase the phase, composition, and size tunability for Sn-Ge-Te quantum dots. Full chemical control of Sn-Ge-Te quantum dots permits a systematic study of structural and optical properties of this phase-change nanomaterial. Specifically, we report composition-dependent crystallization temperature for Sn-Ge-Te quantum dots, which is notably higher compared to bulk thin films. This gives the synergistic benefit of tailoring dopant and material dimension to combine the superior aging properties and ultrafast crystallization kinetics of bulk Sn-Ge-Te, while improving memory data retention due to nanoscale size effects. Furthermore, we discover a large reflectivity contrast between amorphous and crystalline Sn-Ge-Te thin films, exceeding 0.7 in the near-IR spectrum region. We utilize these excellent phase-change optical properties of Sn-Ge-Te quantum dots along with liquid-based processability for nonvolatile multicolor images and electro-optical phase-change devices. Our colloidal approach for phase-change applications offers higher customizability of materials, simpler fabrication, and further miniaturization to the sub-10 nm phase-change devices.

Ductile cooling phase change material.

Project description:Cooling represents a considerable fraction of energy consumption. However, it is indispensable to develop eco-friendly, biocompatible, and ductile cooling materials for personal applications. In this study, we demonstrate the ductile cooling ability with phase change of thermally passivated hydrogel composite materials with additive manufacturing ability. Thermal evaluation of such water-based composites indicates a superior cold retention capacity with a cooling comfort over 6 hours, while the composite displays a full recovery when strained up to 80% in uniaxial compression tests as a result of the intertwining between covalent and ionic bonds. A three-layered rectangular model was utilized to simulate the problem in a steady-state thermal analysis to study the cooling effect. Our findings indicate the potential of hydrogel as a cooling phase-change medium and its contribution towards ductile cooling applications.

Material-assisted metamaterial: a new dimension to create functional metamaterial.

Project description:A high Q-value reflective type metasurface consisting of 1D Au nanorods, a SiO2 spacer and a Au back reflector is demonstrated. It is shown that the sideband of the resonant mode can be suppressed as the resonant wavelength close to the phonon absorption of SiO2. By combining both designed structured resonance and inherent property of the based materials, a low angle-dependent metasurface with a Q-value of 40 has been demonstrated. The proposed structure will be useful for high sensitivity sensing and narrow band thermal emitter.

Nanoporous gold nanoleaf as tunable metamaterial.

Project description:We have studied optical properties of single-layer and multi-fold nanoporous gold leaf (NPGL) metamaterials and observed highly unusual transmission spectra composed of two well-resolved peaks. We explain this phenomenon in terms of a surface plasmon absorption band positioned on the top of a broader transmission band, the latter being characteristic of both homogeneous "solid" and inhomogeneous "diluted" Au films. The transmission spectra of NPGL metamaterials were shown to be controlled by external dielectric environments, e.g. water and applied voltage in an electrochemical cell. This paves the road to numerous functionalities of the studied tunable and active metamaterials, including control of spontaneous emission, energy transfer and many others.

Fast tunable metamaterial liquid crystal achromatic waveplate.

Project description:Photonic metamaterials combined with liquid crystals (LCs) for tunability is a great niche for building miniature devices with high performance such as fast flat tunable lenses, tunable filters, and waveplates. Sub-wavelength or nano-grating surfaces are homogenized to uniaxial waveplates with negative birefringence of unique dispersion when the period is less than the wavelength by at least a few times. This uniaxial metasurface, combined with the LC layer, is shown to act as a tunable retardation achromatic waveplate with 8 μm thick LC layer operating over wide spectral and angular ranges, as compared to using two nematic liquid crystal (NLC) retarders of thicknesses on the order of 30-60 μm, when no metasurface is used. Hence the device becomes miniature and 50× faster due to the thinner liquid crystal layer. The silicon nano-grating of 351 nm pitch and 0.282 fill factor is designed and fabricated to operate in the short-wave infrared range (SWIR). Switching between three achromatic retardation levels: full-, half-, and quarter-waveplates is accomplished by changing the applied voltages on the NLC cell with a switching time of a few milliseconds. This device has applications in fast broadband shutters, low coherence phase shift interferometry, ellipso-polarimetry, dynamic control of light intensity, and smart windows.
