Unsupported Donor-Acceptor Complexes of Noble Gases with Group 13 Elements.

ABSTRACT: Unsupported donor-acceptor complexes of noble gases (Ng) with group 13 elements have been theoretically studied using density functional theory. Calculations reveal that heavier noble gases form thermodynamically stable compounds. The present study reveals that no rigid framework is necessary to stabilize the donor-acceptor complexes. Rather, prepyramidalization at the Lewis acid center may be an interesting alternative to stabilize these complexes. Detailed bonding analyses reveal the formation of two-center-two-electron dative bonding, where Ng atoms act as a donor.

In-Depth Investigation of a Donor-Acceptor Interaction on the Heavy-Group-14@Group-13-Diyls in Transition-Metal Tetrylone Complexes: Structure, Bonding, and Property.

Project description:Stabilization for tetrylone complexes, which carry ylidone(0) ligands [(CO)5W-X (YCp*)2] (X = Ge, Sn, Pb; Y = B-Tl), has become an active theoretical research because of their promising application. Structure, bonding, and quantum properties of the transition-metal donor-acceptor complexes were theoretically investigated at the level of theory BP86 with several types of basis sets including SVP, TZVPP, and TZ2P+. The optimized structures reveal that all ligands X (YCp*)2 are strongly bonded in tilted modes to the metal fragment W(CO)5, and Cp* rings are mainly η5-bonded to atom X. DFT-based bonding analysis results in an implication that the stability of W-X bond strength primarily stems from the donation (CO)5W ← X(YCp*)2 formed by both σ- and π-bondings and the electrostatic interaction ΔE elstat. The W-X bond possesses a considerable polarizability toward atom X, and analysis on its hybridization is either sp2-characteristic or mainly p-characteristic. EDA-NOCV-based results further imply that the ligands XY perform as significant σ-donors but minor π-donors. The visual simulations of NOCV pairs and the deformation densities assemble a comprehensive summary on different components of the chemical bond via σ- and π-types in the complexes. This work contributes to the literature as an in-depth overview on predicted molecular structures and quantum parameters of the complexes [(CO)5W-X(YCp*)2] (X = Ge, Sn, Pb; Y = B-Tl), conducive to either further theoretical reference or extending experimental research.

Indigenous noble gases in the Moon's interior.

Project description:The origin of volatiles in the Moon's interior is debated. Scenarios range from inheritance through a Moon-forming disk or "synestia" to late accretion by meteorites or comets. Noble gases are excellent tracers of volatile origins. We report analyses of all noble gases in paired, unbrecciated lunar mare basalts and show that magmatic glasses therein contain indigenous noble gases including solar-type He and Ne. Assimilation of solar wind (SW)-bearing regolith by the basaltic melt or SW implantation into the basalts is excluded on the basis of the petrological context of the samples, as well as the lack of SW and "excess 40Ar" in the magmatic minerals. The absence of chondritic primordial He and Ne signatures excludes exogenous contamination. We thus conclude that the Moon inherited indigenous noble gases from Earth's mantle by the Moon-forming impact and propose storage in the incompatible element-enriched ("KREEP") reservoir.

Noble gases as cardioprotectants - translatability and mechanism.

Project description:Several noble gases, although classified as inert substances, exert a tissue-protective effect in different experimental models when applied before organ ischaemia as an early or late preconditioning stimulus, after ischaemia as a post-conditioning stimulus or when given in combination before, during and/or after ischaemia. A wide range of organs can be protected by these inert substances, in particular cardiac and neuronal tissue. In this review we summarize the data on noble gas-induced cardioprotection, focusing on the underlying protective mechanisms. We will also look at translatability of experimental data to the clinical situation.

Triarylamines as catalytic donors in light-mediated electron donor-acceptor complexes.

Project description:Recently, photochemistry of Electron Donor-Acceptor (EDA) complexes employing catalytic amounts of electron donors have become of interest as a new methodology in the catalysis field, allowing for decoupling of the electron transfer (ET) from the bond-forming event. However, examples of practical EDA systems in the catalytic regime remain scarce, and their mechanism is not yet well-understood. Herein, we report the discovery of an EDA complex between triarylamines and α-perfluorosulfonylpropiophenone reagents, catalyzing C-H perfluoroalkylation of arenes and heteroarenes under visible light irradiation in pH- and redox-neutral conditions. We elucidate the mechanism of this reaction using a detailed photophysical characterization of the EDA complex, the resulting triarylamine radical cation, and its turnover event.

Doubly charged dimers and trimers of heavy noble gases.

Project description:Many doubly charged heteronuclear dimers are metastable or even thermodynamically stable with respect to charge separation. Homonuclear dicationic dimers, however, are more difficult to form. He22+ was the first noble gas dimer predicted to be metastable and, decades later, observed. Ne22+ is the only other dicationic noble gas dimer that has been detected so far. Here, we present a novel approach to form fragile dicationic species, by post-ionization of singly charged ions that are embedded in helium nanodroplets (HNDs). Bare ions are then extracted by colliding the HNDs with helium gas. We detect homonuclear doubly charged dimers and trimers of krypton and xenon, but not argon. Our multi-reference ab initio calculations confirm the stability of Kr22+, Kr32+, Xe22+, Xe32+, and Ar22+, but put the stability of Ar32+ towards dissociation to Ar+ + Ar2+ into question.

<i>meta</i>-Terphenyl linked donor-π-acceptor dyads: intramolecular charge transfer controlled by electron acceptor group tuning.

Project description:A series of meta-terphenyl linked donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) dyads were prepared to understand the electronic effects of a meta-terphenyl linker according to the electron-accepting ability change. The energy band gaps of the dyads were controlled by tuning the accepting ability, which resulted in emission colors ranging from blue-green to red. In the Lippert-Mataga plots, intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) behavior was observed, which showed gradually increased ICT characteristics as the accepting ability was increased. On the other hand, in the absorption spectra, a red shift of the ICT transition was observed differently from the electron-accepting ability tendency. Thus, the experimental results show that the ICT is determined by steric hindrance rather than the acceptor ability in the ground state due to the lack of π-conjugation of the terphenyl linker by the electron node in the meta-position, whereas ICT in the excited state is controlled by electron-accepting ability.

Photoinduced Electron Transfer in Donor-Acceptor Complexes: Isotope Effect and Dynamic Symmetry Breaking.

Project description:Electron-nuclear (vibronic) coupling has emerged as an important factor in determining the efficiency of energy transfer and charge separation in natural and artificial photosynthetic systems. Here we investigate the photoinduced charge-transfer process in a hydrogen-bonded donor-acceptor molecular complex. By using real-time quantum-classical simulations based on time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations, we follow in detail the relaxation from the Franck-Condon point to the region of strong nonadiabatic coupling where electron transfer occurs. We elucidate how the charge transfer is coupled to specific vibrational modes and how it is affected by isotope substitution. The importance of resonance in nuclear and electron dynamics and the role of dynamic symmetry breaking are emphasized. Using the dipole moment as a descriptive parameter, exchange of angular momentum between nuclear and electronic subsystems in an electron-nuclear resonant process is inferred. The performed simulations support a nonadiabatic conversion via adiabatic passage process that was recently put forward. These results are relevant in deriving rational design principles for solar-to-fuel conversion devices.

Primordial heavy noble gases in the pristine Paris carbonaceous chondrite.

Project description:The Paris carbonaceous chondrite represents the most pristine carbonaceous chondrite, providing a unique opportunity to investigate the composition of early solar system materials prior to the onset of significant aqueous alteration. A dual origin (namely from the inner and outer solar system) has been demonstrated for water in the Paris meteorite parent body (Piani et al. 2018). Here, we aim to evaluate the contribution of outer solar system (cometary-like) water ice to the inner solar system water ice using Xe isotopes. We report Ar, Kr, and high-precision Xe isotopic measurements within bulk CM 2.9 and CM 2.7 fragments, as well as Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe isotope compositions of the insoluble organic matter (IOM). Noble gas signatures are similar to chondritic phase Q with no evidence for a cometary-like Xe component. Small excesses in the heavy Xe isotopes relative to phase Q within bulk samples are attributed to contributions from presolar materials. CM 2.7 fragments have lower Ar/Xe relative to more pristine CM 2.9 fragments, with no systematic difference in Xe contents. We conclude that Kr and Xe were little affected by aqueous alteration, in agreement with (1) minor degrees of alteration and (2) no significant differences in the chemical signature of organic matter in CM 2.7 and CM 2.9 areas (Vinogradoff et al. 2017). Xenon contents in the IOM are larger than previously published data of Xe in chondritic IOM, in line with the Xe component in Paris being pristine and preserved from Xe loss during aqueous alteration/thermal metamorphism.

Noble gases confirm plume-related mantle degassing beneath Southern Africa.

Project description:Southern Africa is characterised by unusually elevated topography and abnormal heat flow. This can be explained by thermal perturbation of the mantle, but the origin of this is unclear. Geophysics has not detected a thermal anomaly in the upper mantle and there is no geochemical evidence of an asthenosphere mantle contribution to the Cenozoic volcanic record of the region. Here we show that natural CO2 seeps along the Ntlakwe-Bongwan fault within KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, have C-He isotope systematics that support an origin from degassing mantle melts. Neon isotopes indicate that the melts originate from a deep mantle source that is similar to the mantle plume beneath Réunion, rather than the convecting upper mantle or sub-continental lithosphere. This confirms the existence of the Quathlamba mantle plume and importantly provides the first evidence in support of upwelling deep mantle beneath Southern Africa, helping to explain the regions elevation and abnormal heat flow.

Orbital hybridization of donor and acceptor to enhance the conductivity of mixed-stack complexes.

Project description:Mixed-stack complexes which comprise columns of alternating donors and acceptors are organic conductors with typically poor electrical conductivity because they are either in a neutral or highly ionic state. This indicates that conductive carriers are insufficient or are mainly localized. In this study, mixed-stack complexes that uniquely exist at the neutral-ionic boundary were synthesized by combining donors (bis(3,4-ethylenedichalcogenothiophene)) and acceptors (fluorinated tetracyanoquinodimethanes) with similar energy levels and orbital symmetry between the highest occupied molecular orbital of the donor and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the acceptor. Surprisingly, the orbitals were highly hybridized in the single-crystal complexes, enhancing the room-temperature conductivity (10-4-0.1 S cm-1) of mixed-stack complexes. Specifically, the maximum conductivity was the highest reported for single-crystal mixed-stack complexes under ambient pressures. The unique electronic structures at the neutral-ionic boundary exhibited structural perturbations between their electron-itinerant and localized states, causing abrupt temperature-dependent changes in their electrical, optical, dielectric, and magnetic properties.
