Wetting of Two-Component Drops: Marangoni Contraction Versus Autophobing.

ABSTRACT: The wetting properties of multicomponent liquids are crucial to numerous industrial applications. The mechanisms that determine the contact angles for such liquids remain poorly understood, with many intricacies arising due to complex physical phenomena, for example, due to the presence of surfactants. Here, we consider two-component drops that consist of mixtures of vicinal alkanediols and water. These diols behave surfactant-like in water. However, the contact angles of such mixtures on solid substrates are surprisingly large. We experimentally reveal that the contact angle is determined by two separate mechanisms of completely different nature, namely, Marangoni contraction (hydrodynamic) and autophobing (molecular). The competition between these effects can even inhibit Marangoni contraction, highlighting the importance of molecular structures in physico-chemical hydrodynamics.

Marangoni spreading and contracting three-component droplets on completely wetting surfaces.

Project description:SignificanceThe shape and dynamics of small sessile droplets are dictated by capillary forces. For liquid mixtures, evaporation adds spatio-temporal modulation to these forces that can either enhance or inhibit droplet spreading, depending on the direction of the resulting Marangoni flow. This work experimentally and numerically demonstrates the coexistence of two antagonistic Marangoni flows in a ternary mixture. Played against each other, they can choreograph a boomerang-like wetting motion: Droplets initially rapidly spread, then contract into a compact cap shape. While such a behavior has been impossible in wetting scenarios of simple liquids, it enables spread-retract-remove surface processing with the addition of a single small liquid volume, demonstrated here in a surface-cleaning experiment.

Trapping of drops by wetting defects.

Project description:Controlling the motion of drops on solid surfaces is crucial in many natural phenomena and technological processes including the collection and removal of rain drops, cleaning technology and heat exchangers. Topographic and chemical heterogeneities on solid surfaces give rise to pinning forces that can capture and steer drops in desired directions. Here we determine general physical conditions required for capturing sliding drops on an inclined plane that is equipped with electrically tunable wetting defects. By mapping the drop dynamics on the one-dimensional motion of a point mass, we demonstrate that the trapping process is controlled by two dimensionless parameters, the trapping strength measured in units of the driving force and the ratio between a viscous and an inertial time scale. Complementary experiments involving superhydrophobic surfaces with wetting defects demonstrate the general applicability of the concept. Moreover, we show that electrically tunable defects can be used to guide sliding drops along actively switchable tracks-with potential applications in microfluidics.

Full wetting of plasmonic nanopores through two-component droplets.

Project description:Benefiting from the prospect of extreme light localization, plasmonic metallic nanostructures are bringing advantages in many applications. However, for use in liquids, the hydrophobic nature of the metallic surface inhibits full wetting, which is related to contact line pinning in the nanostructures. In this work, we use a two-component droplet to overcome this problem. Due to a strong internal flow generated from the solutal Marangoni effect, these droplets can easily prime metallic nanostructures including sub-10 nm nanopores. We subsequently evaluate the local wetting performance of the plasmonic structures using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Compared with other commonly used surface cleaning based wetting methods such as the oxygen plasma treatment, our two-component drop method is an efficient method in resolving the pinning of contact lines and is also non-destructive to samples. Thus the method described here primes plasmonic devices with guaranteed performances in liquid applications.

Marangoni Contraction of Evaporating Sessile Droplets of Binary Mixtures.

Project description:The Marangoni contraction of sessile drops of a binary mixture of a volatile and a nonvolatile liquid has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The origin of the contraction is the locally inhomogeneous evaporation rate of sessile drops. This leads to surface tension gradients and thus to a Marangoni flow. Simulations show that the interplay of Marangoni flow, capillary flow, diffusive transport, and evaporative losses can establish a quasistationary drop profile with an apparent nonzero contact angle even if both liquid components individually wet the substrate completely. Experiments with different solvents, initial mass fractions, and gaseous environments reveal a previously unknown universal power-law relation between the apparent contact angle and the relative undersaturation of the ambient atmosphere: θapp ∼ (RHeq - RH)1/3. This experimentally observed power law is in quantitative agreement with simulation results. The exponent can also be inferred from a scaling analysis of the hydrodynamic-evaporative evolution equations of a binary mixture of liquids with different volatilities.

Polarity-Induced Reactive Wetting: Spreading and Retracting Sessile Water Drops.

Project description:Wetting is typically defined by the relative liquid to solid surface tension/energy, which are composed of polar and nonpolar subcontributions. Current studies often assume that they remain invariant, that is, surfaces are wetting-inert. Complex wetting scenarios, such as adaptive or reactive wetting processes, may involve time-dependent variations in interfacial energies. To maximize differences in energetic states, we employ low-energy perfluoroalkyls integrated with high-energy silica-based polar moieties grown on low-energy polydimethylsiloxane. To this end, we tune the hydrophilic-like wettability on these perfluoroalkyl-silica-polydimethylsiloxane surfaces. Drop contact behaviors range from invariantly hydrophobic at ca. 110° to rapidly spreading at ca. 0° within 5 s. Unintuitively, these vapor-grown surfaces transit toward greater hydrophilicity with increasing perfluoroalkyl deposition. Notably, this occurs as sequential silica-and-perfluoroalkyl deposition also leaves behind embedded polar moieties. We highlight how surfaces having such chemical heterogeneity are inherently wetting-reactive. By creating an abrupt wetting transition composed of reactive and inert domains, we introduce spatial dependency. Drops contacting the transition spread before retracting, occurring over the time scale of a few seconds. This phenomenon contradicts current understanding, exhibiting a uniquely (1) decreasing advancing contact angle and (2) increasing receding contact angle. To explain the behavior, we model such time- and space- dependent reactive wetting using first order kinetics. In doing so, we explore how reactive and recovery mechanisms govern the characteristic time scales of spreading and retracting sessile drops.

Periodic Expansion and Contraction Phenomena in a Pendant Droplet Associated with Marangoni Effect.

Project description:A spontaneous oscillation between the expansion and contraction of a nitrobenzene pendant droplet containing di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (DEHPA) was observed in an aqueous phase under alkaline conditions. We described this phenomenon as the spontaneous oscillation of the oil-water interfacial tension. The oscillation characteristics such as the induction period and the interfacial-tension oscillation frequency were investigated under different temperatures and aqueous phase polarities. The effects of the interfacial tension of the biphasic pendant-droplet, the surface excess of the surfactant molecules, and the amount of nitrobenzene elution from the droplet to the aqueous phase on the oscillation characteristics were investigated. Consequently, the periodic expansion-contraction oscillation mechanism was explained through the adsorption-desorption cycle of DEHPA with respect to the aggregate formation of the inverted micelle of DEHPA. This study was based on a simple vibration phenomenon of interfacial tension, and is extremely important for clarifying the predominant factors that cause fluctuations in the free interface energy, which has been ambiguous.

Marangoni effect visualized in two-dimensions Optical tweezers for gas bubbles.

Project description:In the report we demonstrate how, using laser light, effectively trap gas bubbles and transport them through a liquid phase to a desired destination by shifting the laser beam position. The physics underlying the effect is complex but quite general as it comes from the limited to two-dimension, well-known, Marangoni effect. The experimental microscope-based system consists of a thin layer of liquid placed between two glass plates containing a dye dissolved in a solvent and a laser light beam that is strongly absorbed by the dye. This point-like heat source locally changes surface tension of nearby liquid-air interface. Because of temperature gradients a photo-triggered Marangoni flows are induced leading to self-amplification of the effect and formation of large-scale whirls. The interface is bending toward beam position allowing formation of a gas bubble upon suitable beam steering. Using various techniques (employing luminescent particles or liquid crystals), we visualize liquid flows propelled by the tangential to interface forces. This helped us to understand the physics of the phenomenon and analyze accompanying effects leading to gas bubble trapping. The manipulation of sessile droplets moving on the glass surface induced via controlled with laser light interface bending (i.e. "droplet catapult") is demonstrated as well.

Clinical and biological efficacy of preservative-free NAAGA eye-drops versus levocabastine eye-drops in vernal keratoconjunctivitis patients.

Project description:AimsThis comparative and randomised pilot study assessed the clinical and biological efficacy of Naaxia Sine(R) eye-drops versus levocabastine eye-drops in the treatment of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC).MethodsTwenty-three VKC patients were randomised and treated bilaterally for 28 days with N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate (NAAGA) or levocabastine (LEVO) eye-drops. The primary efficacy variable, overall evolution of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) tear concentrations, was assessed in a masked fashion on D0, D7 and D28. Clinical symptoms and signs were reported at the same time points. Biological parameters were analysed with a non-parametric rank-based approach. Global tolerance was assessed by the investigator and patient.ResultsAt all time points, ECP tear levels were significantly reduced in the NAAGA compared with the LEVO group (p = 0.023). Reduction of eosinophil leucocytes and tear lymphocytes was higher not significant in the NAAGA group. The same trend was observed for the evolution of total ocular symptom score. There were no significant differences between treatment groups in the occurrence of adverse effects, except for burning which was more frequent in the LEVO group (p = 0.002).ConclusionThe anti-eosinophilic actions of NAAGA were shown by a significant reduction of ECP tear concentrations. A decreased lymphocyte count and an overall improvement of the symptomatology were also noted. Moreover, the tolerability of NAAGA appeared to be better.

Pen-drawn Marangoni swimmer.

Project description:Pen-drawing is an intuitive, convenient, and creative fabrication method for delivering emergent and adaptive design to real devices. To demonstrate the application of pen-drawing to robot construction, we developed pen-drawn Marangoni swimmers that perform complex programmed tasks using a simple and accessible manufacturing process. By simply drawing on substrates using ink-based Marangoni fuel, the swimmers demonstrate advanced robotic motions such as polygon and star-shaped trajectories, and navigate through maze. The versatility of pen-drawing allows the integration of the swimmers with time-varying substrates, enabling multi-step motion tasks such as cargo delivery and return to the original place. We believe that our pen-based approach will significantly expand the potential applications of miniaturized swimming robots and provide new opportunities for simple robotic implementations.

Controlled Wetting Properties through Heterogeneous Surfaces Containing Two-level Nanofeatures.

Project description:Addressing the direct control of surface wettability has been a significant challenge for a variety of applications from self-cleaning surfaces to phase-change applications. Surface wettability has been traditionally modulated by installing surface nanostructures or changing their chemistry. Among numerous nanofabrication efforts, the chemical oxidation method is considered a promising approach because it allows cost-effective, quick, and direct control of the morphologies and chemical compositions of the grown nanofeatures. Despite the wide applicability of the surface oxidation method, the precise control of wetting behaviors through the growth of nanostructures has yet to be addressed. Here, we investigate the wetting characteristics of heterogeneous surfaces that contain two-level features (i.e., nanograsses and nanoflowers) with different petal shapes and structural chemistry. The difference in growth rates between nanograsses and nanoflowers creates a time-evolving morphology that can be classified by grass-dominated or flower-dominated regimes, which induces a wide range of water contact angles from 120 to 20°. The following study systematically quantifies the structural details and chemistry of nanostructures associated with their wetting characteristics. This investigation of heterogeneous surfaces will pave the way for selective growth of copper nanostructures and thus a direct control of surface wetting properties for use in future copper-based thermal applications.
