Spontaneous necrosis of a single digit: watershed necrosis.

ABSTRACT: Anatomical variations in the superficial and deep palmar arches are common, but rarely lead to digital necrosis. We report the case of necrosis of the third digit caused by a 'watershed' effect in the context of atherosclerotic disease and rare congenital variations of the superficial and deep palmar arches.

Single-digit-micrometer thickness wood speaker.

Project description:Thin films of several microns in thickness are ubiquitously used in packaging, electronics, and acoustic sensors. Here we demonstrate that natural wood can be directly converted into an ultrathin film with a record-small thickness of less than 10 μm through partial delignification followed by densification. Benefiting from this aligned and laminated structure, the ultrathin wood film exhibits excellent mechanical properties with a high tensile strength of 342 MPa and a Young's modulus of 43.6 GPa, respectively. The material's ultrathin thickness and exceptional mechanical strength enable excellent acoustic properties with a 1.83-times higher resonance frequency and a 1.25-times greater displacement amplitude than a commercial polypropylene diaphragm found in an audio speaker. As a proof-of-concept, we directly use the ultrathin wood film as a diaphragm in a real speaker that can output music. The ultrathin wood film with excellent mechanical property and acoustic performance is a promising candidate for next-generation acoustic speakers.

Single-digit-micrometer-resolution continuous liquid interface production.

Project description:To date, a compromise between resolution and print speed has rendered most high-resolution additive manufacturing technologies unscalable with limited applications. By combining a reduction lens optics system for single-digit-micrometer resolution, an in-line camera system for contrast-based sharpness optimization, and continuous liquid interface production (CLIP) technology for high scalability, we introduce a single-digit-micrometer-resolution CLIP-based 3D printer that can create millimeter-scale 3D prints with single-digit-micrometer-resolution features in just a few minutes. A simulation model is developed in parallel to probe the fundamental governing principles in optics, chemical kinetics, and mass transport in the 3D printing process. A print strategy with tunable parameters informed by the simulation model is adopted to achieve both the optimal resolution and the maximum print speed. Together, the high-resolution 3D CLIP printer has opened the door to various applications including, but not limited to, biomedical, MEMS, and microelectronics.

Single Digit Index Finger Amputation-To Replant or Not?

Project description:Background: Single index finger replantation is often listed as a contraindication due to its hindrance of hand function when replanted. Recent studies demonstrate comparable subjective and global functional outcomes for index flexor zone II finger replants versus revision amputations. We therefore sought to identify current opinions of plastic surgery trainees and staff treating single index finger zone II amputations including influential patient and injury characteristics. Methods: With the approval of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgery, a 17-question survey was sent via email to all listed members on 3 separate occasions. Participation was voluntary and survey responses were compiled and analyzed using SPSS statistical software. Results: Survey response rate was 38.5%. When asked whether the surgeon would replant a single index digit, flexor zone II, sharp amputation, 55.3% of respondents chose "yes," while 44.7% responded "no." Staff (51.5%) were less likely to replant a single index digit amputation. Likelihood of replant dropped substantially in crush (12.4%) and avulsion (17.1%) injury. Smoking was the most likely patient characteristic to change a surgeon's decision (61.9%). Poor range of motion (77.5%) and patient satisfaction (72.5%) were the most frequently listed reasons not to replant. Conclusion: Among Canadian plastic surgeons, there exists disagreement in how single index flexor zone II amputations should be managed. In review of the literature, these notions and previous teaching around replants highlight many inherent surgeon biases with regard to the merit and value of single digit replantation.

Shape anisotropy revisited in single-digit nanometer magnetic tunnel junctions.

Project description:Nanoscale magnetic tunnel junctions play a pivotal role in magnetoresistive random access memories. Successful implementation depends on a simultaneous achievement of low switching current for the magnetization switching by spin transfer torque and high thermal stability, along with a continuous reduction of junction size. Perpendicular easy-axis CoFeB/MgO stacks possessing interfacial anisotropy have paved the way down to 20-nm scale, below which a new approach needs to be explored. Here we show magnetic tunnel junctions that satisfy the requirements at ultrafine scale by revisiting shape anisotropy, which is a classical part of magnetic anisotropy but has not been fully utilized in the current perpendicular systems. Magnetization switching solely driven by current is achieved for junctions smaller than 10 nm where sufficient thermal stability is provided by shape anisotropy without adopting new material systems. This work is expected to push forward the development of magnetic tunnel junctions toward single-digit nm-scale nano-magnetics/spintronics.

Effective Modulation of Ion Mobility through Solid-State Single-Digit Nanopores.

Project description:Many experimental studies have proved that ion dynamics in a single-digit nanopore with dimensions comparable to the Debye length deviate from the bulk values, but we still have critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of ion transport in nanoconfinement. For many energy devices and sensor designs of nanoporous materials, ion mobility is a key parameter for the performance of nanofluidic equipment. However, investigating ion mobility remains an experimental challenge. This study experimentally investigated the monovalent ion dynamics of single-digit nanopores from the perspective of ionic conductance. In this article, we present a theory that is sufficient for a basic understanding of ion transport through a single-digit nanopore, and we subdivided and separately analyzed the contribution of each conductance component. These conclusions will be useful not only in understanding the behavior of ion migration but also in the design of high-performance nanofluidic devices.

Segmentation of Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage on CT With a Region Growing Method Based on Watershed Preprocessing.

Project description:Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) poses a great threat to human life due to its high incidence and poor prognosis. Identification of the bleeding location and quantification of the volume based on CT images are of great significance for assisting the diagnosis and treatment of ICH. In this study, a region-growing algorithm based on watershed preprocessing (RG-WP) was proposed to segment and quantify the hemorrhage. The lowest points yielded by the watershed algorithm were used as seed points for region growing and then hemorrhage was segmented based on the region growing method. At the same time, to integrate the rich experience of clinicians with the algorithm, manual selection of seed points on the basis of watershed segmentation was performed. With the application of segmentation on CT images of 55 patients with ICH, the performance of the RG-WP algorithm was evaluated by comparing it with manual segmentations delineated by professional clinicians as well as the traditional ABC/2 method and the deep learning algorithm U-net. The mean deviation of hemorrhage volume of the RG-WP algorithm from manual segmentation was -0.12 ml (range: -1.05-1.16), while that of the ABC/2 from the manual was 1.05 ml (range: -0.77-9.57). Strong agreement of the algorithm and the manual was confirmed with a high intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (0.998, 95% CI: 0.997-0.999), which was superior to that of the ABC/2 and the manual (0.972, 95% CI: 0.953-0.984). The sensitivity (Sen), positive predictive value (PPV), dice similarity index (DSI), and Jaccard index (JI) of the RG-WP algorithm compared to the manual were 0.92 ± 0.04, 0.95 ± 0.04, 0.93 ± 0.02, and 0.88 ± 0.04, respectively, showing high consistency. Besides, the accuracy of the algorithm was also comparable to that of the deep learning method U-net, with Sen, PPV, DSI, and JI being 0.91 ± 0.09, 0.91 ± 0.06, 0.91 ± 0.05, and 0.91 ± 0.06, respectively.

A simple and soft chemical deaggregation method producing single-digit detonation nanodiamonds.

Project description:Detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) are a class of very small and spherical diamond nanocrystals. They are used in polymer reinforcement materials or as drug delivery systems in the field of nanomedicine. Synthesized by detonation, only the final deaggregation step down to the single-digit nanometer size (<10 nm) unfolds their full potential. Existing deaggregation methods mainly rely on mechanical forces, such as high-power sonication or bead milling. These techniques entail drawbacks such as contamination of the sample and the need for a specialized apparatus. In this paper, we report a purely chemical deaggregation method by simply combining oxidation in air followed by a boiling acid treatment, to produce highly stable single-digit DNDs in a suspension. The resulting DNDs are surface functionalized with carboxyl groups, the final boiling acid treatment removes primary metal contaminants such as magnesium, iron or copper and the nanoparticles remain dispersed over a wide pH range. Our method can be easily carried out in a standard chemistry laboratory with commonly available laboratory apparatus. This is a key step for many DND-based applications, ranging from materials science to biological or medical applications.
