Threading-Induced Dynamical Transition in Tadpole-Shaped Polymers.

ABSTRACT: The relationship between polymer topology and bulk rheology remains a key question in soft matter physics. Architecture-specific constraints (or threadings) are thought to control the dynamics of ring polymers in ring-linear blends, which thus affects the viscosity to range between that of the pure rings and a value larger, but still comparable to, that of the pure linear melt. Here we consider qualitatively different systems of linear and ring polymers, fused together in "chimeric" architectures. The simplest example of this family is a "tadpole"-shaped polymer, a single ring fused to the end of a single linear chain. We show that polymers with this architecture display a threading-induced dynamical transition that substantially slows chain relaxation. Our findings shed light on how threadings control dynamics and may inform design principles for chimeric polymers with topologically tunable bulk rheological properties.

Preparation of superstructured comb polymers based on tadpole-shaped single-chain nanoparticles.

Project description:Compared with the formation of individual elements, the creation of superstructures often yields exceptional properties. This approach has been applied to assemble diverse synthetic building blocks (molecules, macromolecules, inorganic nanoparticles, etc.) into highly organized constructs. In the present study, a novel comb polymer superstructure is developed via the grafting of tadpole-shaped single-chain nanoparticles (T-SCNPs) onto a high-molecular-weight linear backbone (H-LP). The resulting superstructure (comb of T-SCNPs), which utilizes T-SCNPs as building blocks, exhibits distinct rheological behavior in solution. The influences of the microstructure and related parameters (specifically the relaxation time (τ R) and mesh size (ξ) of the entangled chains) on the macroscopic properties (modulus and viscosity) of this complex topological structure in solution are investigated. Compared with conventional comb macromolecules (comb of F-LPs) and blends of SCNPs with high-molecular-weight polymers (SCNPs&H-LP), T-SCNP combs exhibit significantly reduced chain entanglement, faster τ R, and larger ξ in solution, resulting in a substantially decreased viscosity (up to 90%). Furthermore, our research underscores the intricate relationship between these rheological properties and the size and concentration of grafted T-SCNPs. As the size or concentration of T-SCNPs increases, the mesh size of the entangled chains expands, which leads to increased τ R and decreased viscosity.

Programed Thermoresponsive Polymers with Cleavage-Induced Phase Transition.

Project description:A new programed upper critical solution temperature-type thermoresponsive polymer was developed using water-soluble anionic polymer conjugates derived from polyallylamine and phthalic acid with cleavage-induced phase transition property. Intrinsic charge inversion from anion to cation of the polymer side chain is induced through a side chain cleavage reaction in acidic aqueous media. With the progress of side chain cleavage under fixed external conditions, the polymer conjugates express a thermoresponsive property, followed by shifting a phase boundary due to the change in polymer composition. When the phase transition boundary eventually reached the examined temperature, phase transition occurs under fixed external conditions. Such new insight obtained in this study opens up the new concept of time-programed stimuli-responsive polymer possessing a cleavage-induced phase transition.

Preparation and Characterization of Tadpole- and Sphere-Shaped Hemin Nanoparticles for Enhanced Solubility.

Project description:Hemin is a potent iron supplement. A major limitation of the applicability of hemin is its extremely low aqueous solubility and bioavailability. The aim of this work is to prepare hemin nanoparticles with improved solubility. Transmission electron microscopic images showed that hemin nanoparticles with different initial concentrations of hemin (0.1 and 0.5 mg/mL) were tadpole-shaped (head of approximately 200 nm and tail of 100 nm) and sphere-shaped (50-100 nm), respectively. Moreover, hemin nanoparticles exhibited higher solubility than free hemin. The solubility of sphere-shaped nanoparticles was 308.2-fold higher than that of pure hemin at 25 °C. The hemin nanoparticles were stable in acidic conditions and displayed excellent thermal stability. These results suggested that hemin nanoparticles could serve as a potential iron supplement with potential applications in the food, biomedical, and photodynamic-photothermal therapy fields.

Dynamical Transition in Dehydrated Proteins.

Project description:Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry were used to study the role of the dynamics of biomolecules decoupled from solvent effects. Lyophilized sucrose exhibited steadily increasing absorption with temperature as anharmonic excitations commenced as the system emerged from a deep minimum of the potential energy landscape where harmonic vibrations dominate. The polypeptide bacitracin and two globular proteins, lysozyme and human serum albumin, showed a more complex temperature dependence. Further analysis focused on the spectral signature below and above the boson peak. We found evidence of the onset of anharmonic motions that are characteristic for partial unfolding and molecular jamming in the dry biomolecules. The activation of modes of the protein molecules at temperatures comparable to the protein dynamical transition temperature was observed in the absence of hydration. No evidence of Fröhlich coherence, postulated to facilitate biological function, was found in our experiments.

An approach to MOFaxanes by threading ultralong polymers through metal-organic framework microcrystals.

Project description:Mechanically interlocked architecture has inspired the fabrication of numerous molecular systems, such as rotaxanes, catenanes, molecular knots, and their polymeric analogues. However, to date, the studies in this field have only focused on the molecular-scale integrity and topology of its unique penetrating structure. Thus, the topological material design of such architectures has not been fully explored from the nano- to the macroscopic scale. Here, we propose a supramolecular interlocked system, MOFaxane, comprised of long chain molecules penetrating a microcrystal of metal-organic framework (MOF). In this study, we describe the synthesis of polypseudoMOFaxane that is one of the MOFaxane family. This has a polythreaded structure in which multiple polymer chains thread a single MOF microcrystal, forming a topological network in the bulk state. The topological crosslinking architecture is obtained by simply mixing polymers and MOFs, and displays characteristics distinct from those of conventional polyrotaxane materials, including suppression of unthreading reactions.

Protein dynamical transition at 110 K.

Project description:Proteins are known to undergo a dynamical transition at around 200 K but the underlying mechanism, physical origin, and relationship to water are controversial. Here we report an observation of a protein dynamical transition as low as 110 K. This unexpected protein dynamical transition precisely correlated with the cryogenic phase transition of water from a high-density amorphous to a low-density amorphous state. The results suggest that the cryogenic protein dynamical transition might be directly related to the two liquid forms of water proposed at cryogenic temperatures.

Threading of Unconcatenated Ring Polymers at High Concentrations: Double-Folded vs Time-Equilibrated Structures.

Project description:Unconcatenated ring polymers in concentrated solutions and melt are remarkably well described as double-folded conformations on randomly branched primitive trees. This picture though contrasts recent evidence for extensive intermingling between close-by rings in the form of long-lived topological constraints or threadings. Here, we employ the concept of ring minimal surface to quantify the extent of threadings in polymer solutions of the double-folded rings vs rings in equilibrated molecular dynamics computer simulations. Our results show that the double-folded ring polymers are significantly less threaded compared to their counterparts at equilibrium. Second, threadings form through a slow process whose characteristic time-scale is of the same order of magnitude as that of the diffusion of the rings in solution. These findings are robust, being based on universal (model-independent) observables as the average fraction of threaded length or the total penetrations between close-by rings and the corresponding distribution functions.

To thread or not to thread? Effective potentials and threading interactions between asymmetric ring polymers.

Project description:We use computer simulations to study a system of two unlinked ring polymers, whose length and bending stiffness are systematically varied. We derive the effective potentials between the rings, calculate the areas of minimal surfaces of the same, and characterize the threading between them. When the two rings are of the same kind, threading of a one ring through the surface of the other is immanent for small ring-ring separations. Flexible rings pierce the surface of the other ring several times but only shallowly, as compared to the stiff rings which pierce less frequently but deeply. Typically, the ring that is being threaded swells and flattens up into an oblate-like conformation, while the ring that is threading the other takes a shape of an elongated prolate. The roles of the threader and the threaded ring are being dynamically exchanged. If, on the other hand, the rings are of different kinds, the symmetry is broken and the rings tend to take up roles of the threader and the threaded ring with unequal probabilities. We propose a method how to predict these probabilities based on the parameters of the individual rings. Ultimately, our work captures the interactions between ring polymers in a coarse-grained fashion, opening the way to large-scale modelling of materials such as kinetoplasts, catenanes or topological brushes.

Topological Transition in Aromatic and Quinonoid π-Conjugated Polymers Induced by Static Strain.

Project description:A topological quantum phase transition has been identified for the first time for 24 π-conjugated polymers as a function of external longitudinal strain due to a level crossing of the frontier orbitals at the topological phase transition. Topological phase is determined by the presence/absence of edge states. Out of the 24 polymers 15 are traditionally assigned an aromatic character, and 9 are traditionally assigned a quinonoid character. We find that all aromatic ones correspond to the trivial topological phase (Zak invariant, Z2 = 0), while all of the quinonoid ones to the nontrivial topological phase (Z2 = 1) replacing the intuitive characterization of aromatic/quinonoid with the physically well-defined Zak invariant. Unique topological phase transition as a function of tensile strain can be achieved for four of the quinonoid ones. Tensile strain in these cases leads to a reduction of the bandgap. We introduced a figure of merit for indicating the efficiency of achievable very small bandgap upon the application of external strain.

Lanthanum induced B-to-Z transition in self-assembled Y-shaped branched DNA structure.

Project description:Controlled conversion of right-handed B-DNA to left-handed Z-DNA is one of the greatest conformational transitions in biology. Recently, the B-Z transition has been explored from nanotechnological points of view and used as the driving machinery of many nanomechanical devices. Using a combination of CD spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and PAGE, we demonstrate that low concentration of lanthanum chloride can mediate B-to-Z transition in self-assembled Y-shaped branched DNA (bDNA) structure. The transition is sensitive to the sequence and structure of the bDNA. Thermal melting and competitive dye binding experiments suggest that La(3+) ions are loaded to the major and minor grooves of DNA and stabilize the Z-conformation. Our studies also show that EDTA and EtBr play an active role in reversing the transition from Z-to-B DNA.
