Ion-to-electron capacitance of single-walled carbon nanotube layers before and after ion-selective membrane deposition.

ABSTRACT: The capacitance of the ion-to-electron transducer layer helps to maintain a high potential stability of solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs), and its estimation is therefore an essential step of SC-ISE characterization. The established chronopotentiometric protocol used to evaluate the capacitance of the single-walled carbon nanotube transducer layer was revised in order to obtain more reliable and better reproducible values and also to allow capacitance to be measured before membrane deposition for electrode manufacturing quality control purposes. The capacitance values measured with the revised method increased linearly with the number of deposited carbon nanotube-based transducer layers and were also found to correlate linearly before and after ion-selective membrane deposition, with correlation slopes close to 1 for nitrate-selective electrodes, to 0.7 and to 0.5 for potassium- and calcium-selective electrodes.

Wavelength-dependent photoconductivity of single-walled carbon nanotube layers.

Project description:A number of electronic devices such as phase shifters, polarizers, modulators, and power splitters are based on tunable materials. These materials often do not meet all the requirements namely low losses, fast response time, and technological compatibility. Novel nanomaterials, such as single-walled carbon nanotubes, are therefore widely studied to fill this technological gap. Here we show how the dielectric constant of single-walled carbon nanotube layers can be substantially modified by illuminating them due to unique light-matter interactions. We relate the optical excitation of the nanotube layers to the illumination wavelength and intensity, by resistance and capacitance measurements. The dielectric constant is modified under laser illumination due to the change of material polarization and free carrier generation, and is shown to not be temperature-related. The findings indicate that SWCNT layers are a prospective tunable optoelectronic material for both high and low frequency applications.

Wafer-Scale Thermophoretic Dry Deposition of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Thin Films.

Project description:We report the direct and dry deposition of transparent conducting films (TCFs) of aerosol-synthesized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) using a thermophoretic precipitator (TP) designed for the uniform and efficient deposition of aerosol-synthesized nanomaterials on 50 mm wafers or similarly sized polymer substrates. The optical and electrical performance of the fabricated TCFs match or surpass the published results achieved using a filter-based collection of aerosol-synthesized SWNTs, and TCFs with sheet resistances of 60 Ω/sq. at 87.8% transmittance and 199 Ω/sq. at 96% transmittance on flexible polymer substrates are demonstrated. The precipitator design is immediately applicable in roll-to-roll fabrication of SWNT TCFs or other functional coatings of aerosol-synthesized nanomaterials.

Selective breakdown of metallic pathways in double-walled carbon nanotube networks.

Project description:Covalently functionalized, semiconducting double-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit remarkable properties and can outperform their single-walled carbon nanotube counterparts. In order to harness their potential for electronic applications, metallic double-walled carbon nanotubes must be separated from the semiconductors. However, the inner wall is inaccessible to current separation techniques which rely on the surface properties. Here, the first approach to address this challenge through electrical breakdown of metallic double-walled carbon nanotubes, both inner and outer walls, within networks of mixed electronic types is described. The intact semiconductors demonstrate a ∼62% retention of the ON-state conductance in thin film transistors in response to covalent functionalization. The selective elimination of the metallic pathways improves the ON/OFF ratio, by more than 360 times, to as high as 40 700, while simultaneously retaining high ON-state conductance.

Quantum capacitance mediated carbon nanotube optomechanics.

Project description:Cavity optomechanics allows the characterization of a vibration mode, its cooling and quantum manipulation using electromagnetic fields. Regarding nanomechanical as well as electronic properties, single wall carbon nanotubes are a prototypical experimental system. At cryogenic temperatures, as high quality factor vibrational resonators, they display strong interaction between motion and single-electron tunneling. Here, we demonstrate large optomechanical coupling of a suspended carbon nanotube quantum dot and a microwave cavity, amplified by several orders of magnitude via the nonlinearity of Coulomb blockade. From an optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) experiment, we obtain a single photon coupling of up to g0 = 2π ⋅ 95 Hz. This indicates that normal mode splitting and full optomechanical control of the carbon nanotube vibration in the quantum limit is reachable in the near future. Mechanical manipulation and characterization via the microwave field can be complemented by the manifold physics of quantum-confined single electron devices.

Improved Solid-Contact Nitrate Ion Selective Electrodes Based on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) as an Ion-to-Electron Transducer.

Project description:Possible improvement of the performance characteristics, reliability and selectivity of solid-contact nitrate ion-selective electrodes (ISE) (SC/NO3--ISE) is attained by the application of a nitron-nitrate (Nit+/NO3-) ion association complex and inserting multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as an ion-to-electron transducer between the ion sensing membrane (ISM) and the electronic conductor glassy carbon (GC) substrate. The potentiometric performance of the proposed electrode revealed a Nernstian slope -55.1 ± 2.1 (r² = 0.997) mV/decade in the range from 8.0 × 10-8-1 × 10-2 M with a detection limit of 2.8 × 10-8 (1.7 ng/mL). Selectivity, repeatability and reproducibility of the proposed sensors were considerably improved as compared to the coated disc electrode (GC/NO3--ISE) without insertion of a MWCNT layer. Short-term potential stability and capacitance of the proposed sensors were tested using a current-reversal chronopotentiometric technique. The potential drift in presence of a MWCNT layer decreased from 167 μVs-1 (i.e., in absence of MWCNTs) to 16.6 μVs-1. In addition, the capacitance was enhanced from 5.99 μF (in absence of MWCNTs) to 60.3 μF (in the presence of MWCNTs). The presented electrodes were successfully applied for nitrate determination in real samples with good accuracy.

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Synthesis Yield Variation in a Horizontal Chemical Vapor Deposition Reactor.

Project description:The controlled synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is essential for their industrial application. This study investigates the synthesis yield of SWNTs, which depends on the positions of the samples on a horizontal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system. Methane and Fe thin films were used as the feedstock and catalyst for SWNTs synthesis, respectively. A high-resolution scanning electron microscope was used to examine the synthesis yield variation of the SWNTs along the axial distance of the reactor. The morphology and crystallinity of the fabricated SWNTs were evaluated by atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. We observed that the highest synthesis yield of the SWNTs was obtained in the rear region of the horizontal reactor, and not the central region. These results can be applied to the synthesis of various low-dimensional nanomaterials, such as semiconducting nanowires and transition metal dichalcogenides, especially when a horizontal CVD chamber is used.

Electrically Sorted Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes-Based Electron Transporting Layers for Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Incorporation of as prepared single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into the electron transporting layer (ETL) is an effective strategy to enhance the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the fundamental role of the SWCNT electrical types in the PSCs is not well understood. Herein, we prepared semiconducting (s-) and metallic (m-) SWCNT families and integrated them into TiO2 photoelectrodes of the PSCs. Based on experimental and theoretical studies, we found that the electrical type of the nanotubes plays an important role in the devices. In particular, the mixture of s-SWCNTs and m-SWCNTs (2:1 w/w)-based PSCs exhibited a remarkable efficiency of up to 19.35%, which was significantly higher than that of the best control cell (17.04%). In this class of PSCs, semiconducting properties of s-SWCNTs play a critical role in extracting and transporting electrons, whereas m-SWCNTs provide high conductance throughout the electrode.

Multivariate Metal-Organic Framework/Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Buckypaper for Selective Lead Decontamination.

Project description:The search for efficient technologies empowering the selective capture of environmentally harmful heavy metals from wastewater treatment plants, at affordable prices, attracts wide interest but constitutes an important technological challenge. We report here an eco-friendly single-walled carbon nanotube buckypaper (SWCNT-BP) enriched with a multivariate amino acid-based metal-organic framework (MTV-MOF) for the efficient and selective removal of Pb2+ in multicomponent water systems. Pristine MTV-MOF was easily immobilized within the porous network of entangled SWCNTs, thus obtaining a stable self-standing adsorbing membrane filter (MTV-MOF/SWCNT-BP). SWCNT-BP alone shows a moderately good removal performance with a maximum adsorption capacity of 180 mg·g-1 and a considerable selectivity for Pb(II) ions in highly concentrated multi-ion solutions over a wide range of lead concentration (from 200 to 10000 ppb). Remarkably, these features were outperformed with the hybrid membrane filter MTV-MOF/SWCNT-BP, exhibiting enhanced selectivity and adsorption capacity (310 mg·g-1, which is up to 42% higher than that of the neat SWCNT-BP) and consequently enabling a more efficient and selective removal of Pb2+ from aqueous media. MTV-MOF/SWCNT-BP was able to reduce [Pb2+] from the dangerous 1000 ppb level to acceptable limits for drinking water, below 10 ppb, as established by the current EPA and WHO limits. Thus, the eco-friendly composite MTV-MOF/SWCNT-BP shows the potential to be effectively used several times as a reliable adsorbent for Pb2+ removal for household drinking water or in industrial treatment plants for water and wastewater lead decontamination.

Multi-walled carbon nanotube-induced gene expression in vitro

Project description:There is a current interest in reducing the in vivo toxicity testing of nanomaterials in animals by increasing toxicity testing using in vitro cellular assays; however, toxicological results are seldom concordant between in vivo and in vitro models. This study compared global multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-induced gene expression from human lung epithelial and microvascular endothelial cells in monoculture and coculture with gene expression from mouse lungs exposed to MWCNT. Using a cutoff of 10% false discovery rate and 1.5 fold change, we determined that there were more concordant genes (gene expression both up- or downregulated in vivo and in vitro) expressed in both cell types in coculture than in monoculture. When reduced to only those genes involved in inflammation and fibrosis, known outcomes of in vivo MWCNT exposure, there were more disease-related concordant genes expressed in coculture than monoculture. Additionally, different cellular signaling pathways are activated in response to MWCNT dependent upon culturing conditions. As coculture gene expression better correlated with in vivo gene expression, we suggest that cellular cocultures may offer enhanced in vitro models for nanoparticle risk assessment and the reduction of in vivo toxicological testing.

Diameter control of single-walled carbon nanotube forests from 1.3-3.0 nm by arc plasma deposition.

Project description:We present a method to both precisely and continuously control the average diameter of single-walled carbon nanotubes in a forest ranging from 1.3 to 3.0 nm with ~1 Å resolution. The diameter control of the forest was achieved through tuning of the catalyst state (size, density, and composition) using arc plasma deposition of nanoparticles. This 1.7 nm control range and 1 Å precision exceed the highest reports to date.
