Advanced feature selection to study the internationalization strategy of enterprises.

ABSTRACT: Firms face an increasingly complex economic and financial environment in which the access to international networks and markets is crucial. To be successful, companies need to understand the role of internationalization determinants such as bilateral psychic distance, experience, etc. Cutting-edge feature selection methods are applied in the present paper and compared to previous results to gain deep knowledge about strategies for Foreign Direct Investment. More precisely, evolutionary feature selection, addressed from the wrapper approach, is applied with two different classifiers as the fitness function: Bagged Trees and Extreme Learning Machines. The proposed intelligent system is validated when applied to real-life data from Spanish Multinational Enterprises (MNEs). These data were extracted from databases belonging to the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism, and Trade. As a result, interesting conclusions are derived about the key features driving to the internationalization of the companies under study. This is the first time that such outcomes are obtained by an intelligent system on internationalization data.

Project description:BackgroundHot spots are interface residues that contribute most binding affinity to protein-protein interaction. A compact and relevant feature subset is important for building machine learning methods to predict hot spots on protein-protein interfaces. Although different methods have been used to detect the relevant feature subset from a variety of features related to interface residues, it is still a challenge to detect the optimal feature subset for building the final model.ResultsIn this study, three different feature selection methods were compared to propose a new hybrid feature selection strategy. This new strategy was proved to effectively reduce the feature space when we were building the prediction models for identifying hotspot residues. It was tested on eighty-two features, both conventional and newly proposed. According to the strategy, combining the feature subsets selected by decision tree and mRMR (maximum Relevance Minimum Redundancy) individually, we were able to build a model with 6 features by using a PSFS (Pseudo Sequential Forward Selection) process. Compared with other state-of-art methods for the independent test set, our model had shown better or comparable predictive performances (with F-measure 0.622 and recall 0.821). Analysis of the 6 features confirmed that our newly proposed feature CNSV_REL1 was important for our model. The analysis also showed that the complementarity between features should be considered as an important aspect when conducting the feature selection.ConclusionIn this study, most important of all, a new strategy for feature selection was proposed and proved to be effective in selecting the optimal feature subset for building prediction models, which can be used to predict hot spot residues on protein-protein interfaces. Moreover, two aspects, the generalization of the single feature and the complementarity between features, were proved to be of great importance and should be considered in feature selection methods. Finally, our newly proposed feature CNSV_REL1 had been proved an alternative and effective feature in predicting hot spots by our study. Project description:ObjectiveTo identify predictors of prediabetes using feature selection and machine learning on a nationally representative sample of the US population.Materials and methodsWe analyzed n = 6346 men and women enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014. Prediabetes was defined using American Diabetes Association guidelines. The sample was randomly partitioned to training (n = 3174) and internal validation (n = 3172) sets. Feature selection algorithms were run on training data containing 156 preselected exposure variables. Four machine learning algorithms were applied on 46 exposure variables in original and resampled training datasets built using 4 resampling methods. Predictive models were tested on internal validation data (n = 3172) and external validation data (n = 3000) prepared from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2012. Model performance was evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Predictors were assessed by odds ratios in logistic models and variable importance in others. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) prediabetes screening tool was the benchmark to compare model performance.ResultsPrediabetes prevalence was 23.43%. The CDC prediabetes screening tool produced 64.40% AUROC. Seven optimal (≥ 70% AUROC) models identified 25 predictors including 4 potentially novel associations; 20 by both logistic and other nonlinear/ensemble models and 5 solely by the latter. All optimal models outperformed the CDC prediabetes screening tool (P < 0.05).DiscussionCombined use of feature selection and machine learning increased predictive performance outperforming the recommended screening tool. A range of predictors of prediabetes was identified.ConclusionThis work demonstrated the value of combining feature selection with machine learning to identify a wide range of predictors that could enhance prediabetes prediction and clinical decision-making.
