Optical Properties of Stanene-like Nanosheets on Al₂O₃(0001): Implications for Xene Photonics.

ABSTRACT: Stanene is one of the most intriguing two-dimensional (2D) materials because of its nontrivial topological properties. Here, the optical properties from THz to UV of molecular beam deposited tin nanosheets on Al₂O₃(0001) are reported. The experimental absorption coefficient cannot be described in terms of metallic tin or tin oxides. Nonetheless, a similar optical behavior was predicted by theory for freestanding stanene, thus suggesting the formation of the 2D tin nanosheets with stanene-like properties. These findings show that 2D tin bears appealing optical properties in a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum, thus paving the way to Xenes-based nanophotonics.

MXene Core-Shell Nanosheets: Facile Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Versatile Photonics Applications.

Project description:In recent years, the transition metal carbonitrides(MXenes) have been widely applied to photoelectric field, and better performance of these applications was achieved via MXene complex structures. In our work, we proposed a MXene core-shell nanosheet composed of a Ti2C (MXene) phase and gold nanoparticles, and applied it to mode-locked and single-frequency fiber laser applications. The optoelectronic results suggested that the performances of these two applications were both improved when MXene core-shell nanosheets were applied. As a result, we obtained a mode-locking operation with 670 fs pulses, and the threshold pump power reached to as low as 20 mW. Besides, a single-frequency laser with the narrowest linewidth of ~1 kHz is also demonstrated experimentally. Our research work proved that MXene core-shell nanosheets could be used as saturable absorbers (SAs) to promote versatile photonic applications.

Atomically resolved electronic properties in single layer graphene on α-Al2O3 (0001) by chemical vapor deposition.

Project description:Metal-free chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of single-layer graphene (SLG) on c-plane sapphire has recently been demonstrated for wafer diameters of up to 300 mm, and the high quality of the SLG layers is generally characterized by integral methods. By applying a comprehensive analysis approach, distinct interactions at the graphene-sapphire interface and local variations caused by the substrate topography are revealed. Regions near the sapphire step edges show tiny wrinkles with a height of about 0.2 nm, framed by delaminated graphene as identified by the typical Dirac cone of free graphene. In contrast, adsorption of CVD SLG on the hydroxyl-terminated α-Al2O3 (0001) terraces results in a superstructure with a periodicity of (2.66 ± 0.03) nm. Weak hydrogen bonds formed between the hydroxylated sapphire surface and the π-electron system of SLG result in a clean interface. The charge injection induces a band gap in the adsorbed graphene layer of about (73 ± 3) meV at the Dirac point. The good agreement with the predictions of a theoretical analysis underlines the potential of this hybrid system for emerging electronic applications.

Cryogenic Exfoliation of 2D Stanene Nanosheets for Cancer Theranostics.

Project description:Stanene (Sn)-based materials have been extensively applied in industrial production and daily life, but their potential biomedical application remains largely unexplored, which is due to the absence of the appropriate and effective methods for fabricating Sn-based biomaterials. Herein, we explored a new approach combining cryogenic exfoliation and liquid-phase exfoliation to successfully manufacture two-dimensional (2D) Sn nanosheets (SnNSs). The obtained SnNSs exhibited a typical sheet-like structure with an average size of ~ 100 nm and a thickness of ~ 5.1 nm. After PEGylation, the resulting PEGylated SnNSs (SnNSs@PEG) exhibited good stability, superior biocompatibility, and excellent photothermal performance, which could serve as robust photothermal agents for multi-modal imaging (fluorescence/photoacoustic/photothermal imaging)-guided photothermal elimination of cancer. Furthermore, we also used first-principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the photothermal mechanism of SnNSs, revealing that the free electrons in upper and lower layers of SnNSs contribute to the conversion of the photo to thermal. This work not only introduces a new approach to fabricate 2D SnNSs but also establishes the SnNSs-based nanomedicines for photonic cancer theranostics. This new type of SnNSs with great potential in the field of nanomedicines may spur a wave of developing Sn-based biological materials to benefit biomedical applications.

Computational Investigations of the Water Structure at the α-Al2O3(0001)-Water Interface.

Project description:The α-Al2O3(0001)-water interface is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The spectral signatures of the vibrational sum frequency generation (vSFG) spectra of OH stretching mode for water molecules at the interface are related to the interfacial water orientation, hydrogen bond network, and water dissociation process at different water/alumina interfaces. Significant differences are found between alumina surfaces at different hydroxylation levels, namely, Al-terminated and O-terminated α-Al2O3(0001). By calculating the vibrational sum frequency generation spectrum and its imaginary component from AIMD results, the structure of interfacial waters as well as the termination of alumina slab are related to the spectral signatures of vSFG data.

Modelling the strength of mineral-organic binding: organic molecules on the α-Al2O3(0001) surface.

Project description:Organic carbon (OC) is an essential component of soil. Sorption of OC to oxide mineral surfaces is a key process in soil preservation due to its ability to protect OC from microbial degradation. To understand the sorption of OC in soils and obtain a quantitative description of the binding of organic molecules to soil minerals, we investigated the binding of water and small organic molecules, typical building blocks of OC, on α-Al2O3, a common soil mineral. α-Al2O3 was modelled using (0001)-oriented periodic slabs, using density functional theory calculations with empirical dispersion correction. For water, dissociative adsorption was energetically preferred to molecular adsorption. Amine, amide and carboxylic acid functional groups were found to bind more strongly to this surface compared to water. Alcohol, ether, thiol and ester functional groups had adsorption energies very similar to that of water, while hydrocarbons were found to bind less strongly. Carboxylic acids were the strongest bound surface adsorbates in this study. Dissociated adsorption configurations (where allowed by the molecules' chemical nature) were usually more favourable than molecular adsorption. Hydrogen bonding was found to be a major contributor to the stability of adsorption configurations. This work shows that a number of organic functional groups, in particular amine, amide and carboxylic acids, bind to the α-Al2O3(0001) surface more strongly than water; thus they are likely to be adsorbed on this mineral surface under ambient conditions and to provide stability of adsorbed OC.

Tuning of structural and optical properties with enhanced catalytic activity in chemically synthesized Co-doped MoS2 nanosheets.

Project description:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets, due to having a highly active nature, being low cost and having unique physical and chemical properties, have shown their efficacy in the catalytic reduction of nitroarenes. Doping of transition metal ions in molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets is a well-known strategy to enhance their catalytic efficiency for the reduction of nitroarenes, however, finding the optimum dopant amount is still a subject of ongoing research. Herein, we have synthesized few-layered cobalt (Co) doped MoS2 nanosheets with different cobalt content (2%, 4%, 6% and 8%) through the solvothermal approach, taking sodium molybdate dihydrate (Na2MoO4·2H2O), thiourea (CH4N2S) and cobalt acetate tetrahydrate [Co(CH3COO)2·4H2O] as precursors and their catalytic performance has been affirmed by monitoring the reduction of p-nitrophenol by NaBH4 in real time using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The 6% Co doped MoS2 nanosheets have exhibited superior catalytic activity with a pseudo-first order rate constant of 3.03 × 10-3 s-1 attributed to the abundant defects in the active edge sites having a dominant metallic 1T phase with Co ion activated defective basal planes, sulphur (S) edges, synergistic structural and electronic modulation between MoS2 and Co ions and enhanced electron transfer assisted through redox cycling in the active sites. An attempt has also been made to study the manipulation of structural and optical properties with cobalt doping in MoS2 nanosheets to establish a correlation between the catalytic efficiency and dopant content. This study demonstrates that proper tuning of Co doping in MoS2 nanosheets paves the way in searching for a potential alternative of a noble metal catalyst for the catalytic reduction of nitroarenes.

Thermo-Optical Characterization of Therminol55 Based MXene-Al2O3 Hybridized Nanofluid and New Correlations for Thermal Properties.

Project description:The current research focuses on formulating a new class of Therminol55-based nanofluids that incorporates an MXene/Al2O3 nanocomposite as the new class of dispersant at three different concentrations of 0.05, 0.10, and 0.20 wt%. The optical and thermophysical properties of the formulated nanofluid are assessed experimentally. Zeta potential and FTIR analyses are employed to evaluate the composite particles' surface charge and chemical stability, respectively. Thermal conductivity is observed to increase with nanoparticle loading and maximally augmented by 61.8% for 0.20 wt%, whereas dynamic viscosity increased with adding nanoparticles but remarkably dropped with increasing temperature. In addition, the prepared TH55/MXene + Al2O3 samples are thermally stable up to 200 °C according to TGA analyses. Moreover, the proposed correlations for the thermal conductivity and viscosity showed good agreement with the experimental data. The study's findings suggest that the formulated nanofluid could be a viable contender to be used as a heat transfer fluid in the thermal sector.

Exfoliated near infrared fluorescent silicate nanosheets for (bio)photonics.

Project description:Imaging of complex (biological) samples in the near-infrared (NIR) is beneficial due to reduced light scattering, absorption, phototoxicity, and autofluorescence. However, there are few NIR fluorescent materials known and suitable for biomedical applications. Here we exfoliate the layered pigment CaCuSi4O10 (Egyptian Blue, EB) via ball milling and facile tip sonication into NIR fluorescent nanosheets (EB-NS). The size of EB-NS can be tailored to diameters <20 nm and heights down to 1 nm. EB-NS fluoresce at 910 nm and the fluorescence intensity correlates with the number of Cu2+ ions. Furthermore, EB-NS display no bleaching and high brightness compared with other NIR fluorophores. The versatility of EB-NS is demonstrated by in-vivo single-particle tracking and microrheology measurements in Drosophila melanogaster embryos. EB-NS can be uptaken by plants and remotely detected in a low-cost stand-off detection setup. In summary, EB-NS have the potential for a wide range of bioimaging applications.

Lattice strain effects on the optical properties of MoS2 nanosheets.

Project description:"Strain engineering" in functional materials has been widely explored to tailor the physical properties of electronic materials and improve their electrical and/or optical properties. Here, we exploit both in plane and out of plane uniaxial tensile strains in MoS2 to modulate its band gap and engineer its optical properties. We utilize X-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy to quantify the strains in the as-synthesized MoS2 nanosheets and apply measured shifts of Raman-active modes to confirm lattice strain modification of both the out-of-plane and in-plane phonon vibrations of the MoS2 nanosheets. The induced band gap evolution due to in-plane and out-of-plane tensile stresses is validated by photoluminescence (PL) measurements, promising a potential route for unprecedented manipulation of the physical, electrical and optical properties of MoS2.

Electronic properties and reactivity of simulated Fe(3+) and Cr(3+) substituted α-Al(2)O(3) (0001) surface.

Project description:Metal oxide based minerals naturally contain transition metal impurities isomorphically substituted into the structure that can alter the structural and electronic properties as well as the reactivity of these metal oxides. Natural α-Al(2)O(3) (corundum) can contain up to 9.17% (w/w) Fe(2)O(3) and 1.81% (w/w) of Cr(2)O(3.) Here we report on changes in the structural and electronic properties of undoped and doped α-Al(2)O(3) (0001) surfaces using periodic density functional theory (DFT) methods with spin unrestricted B3LYP functional and a local atomic basis set. Both structural and electronic properties are altered upon doping. Implications for doping effects on photochemical processes are discussed.As metal oxides are major components of the environment, including atmospheric mineral aerosol, DFT was also used to study the effect of transition metal impurities on gas/surface interactions of a model acidic atmospheric gas molecule, carbon monoxide (CO). The theoretical results indicated that the presence of Fe(3+) and Cr(3+) impurities substituted on the outer layer of natural corundum surfaces reduces the propensity toward CO adsorption relative to the undoped surface. However, CO-surface interactions resemble that of bulk α-Al(2)O(3) when the impurity is substituted below the first surface layer. The presence and location of the mineral dopant was found to significantly alter the structural and electronic properties and gas/surface interactions studied here.
