Synthetic hourly electricity load data for the paper and food industries.

ABSTRACT: The data set includes hourly time series for a period of one year of electricity demand of three different types of industries. The industries include a small food processing company, one small paper industry and one medium-large paper producing company. The data have been synthetized from two years of measured data from industries in Chile using a comprehensive clustering analysis. The synthetic data possess the same statistical characteristics as the measured data but are provided normalized to one kWh and anonymized in order to be used without confidentiality issues. The data were originally used in the associated paper [1] to assess the demand side management potential of the industries but these can be used for further energy system modelling exercises including these types of industries.

Developing reliable hourly electricity demand data through screening and imputation.

Project description:Electricity usage (demand) data are used by utilities, governments, and academics to model electric grids for a variety of planning (e.g., capacity expansion and system operation) purposes. The U.S. Energy Information Administration collects hourly demand data from all balancing authorities (BAs) in the contiguous United States. As of September 2019, we find 2.2% of the demand data in their database are missing. Additionally, 0.5% of reported quantities are either negative values or are otherwise identified as outliers. With the goal of attaining non-missing, continuous, and physically plausible demand data to facilitate analysis, we developed a screening process to identify anomalous values. We then applied a Multiple Imputation by Chained Equations (MICE) technique to impute replacements for missing and anomalous values. We conduct cross-validation on the MICE technique by marking subsets of plausible data as missing, and using the remaining data to predict this "missing" data. The mean absolute percentage error of imputed values is 3.5% across all BAs. The cleaned data are published and available open access: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3690240.

Data-driven load profiles and the dynamics of residential electricity consumption.

Project description:The dynamics of power consumption constitutes an essential building block for planning and operating sustainable energy systems. Whereas variations in the dynamics of renewable energy generation are reasonably well studied, a deeper understanding of the variations in consumption dynamics is still missing. Here, we analyse highly resolved residential electricity consumption data of Austrian, German and UK households and propose a generally applicable data-driven load model. Specifically, we disentangle the average demand profiles from the demand fluctuations based purely on time series data. We introduce a stochastic model to quantitatively capture the highly intermittent demand fluctuations. Thereby, we offer a better understanding of demand dynamics, in particular its fluctuations, and provide general tools for disentangling mean demand and fluctuations for any given system, going beyond the standard load profile (SLP). Our insights on the demand dynamics may support planning and operating future-compliant (micro) grids in maintaining supply-demand balance.

A rich dataset of hourly residential electricity consumption data and survey answers from the iFlex dynamic pricing experiment.

Project description:The iFlex field experiment was conducted to understand if and how households change their power consumption in response to variable hourly electricity prices. This experiment was conducted in several Norwegian regions, and various price signals were tested over two winter periods from early 2020 to spring 2021. The resulting dataset includes hourly electricity consumption data of all participating households and answers to three surveys about household characteristics such as electric appliances, living conditions, socio-demographic variables, and their willingness to be flexible. In addition, temperature data are added to the dataset from public sources. This rich dataset can be used to analyse households' demand flexibility potential in-depth. Furthermore, subgroups, such as low-income households or highly electrified households with electricity as a primary heating source, can be investigated to enhance the understanding of how these are affected by variable power prices.

Functional Data Analysis of high-frequency load curves reveals drivers of residential electricity consumption.

Project description:Smart energy meters generate real time, high frequency data which can foster demand management and response of consumers and firms, with potential private and social benefits. However, proper statistical techniques are needed to make sense of this large amount of data and translate them into usable recommendations. Here, we apply Functional Data Analysis (FDA), a novel branch of Statistics that analyses functions-to identify drivers of residential electricity load curves. We evaluate a real time feedback intervention which involved about 1000 Italian households for a period of three years. Results of the FDA modelling reveal, for the first time, daytime-indexed patterns of residential electricity consumption which depend on the ownership of specific clusters of electrical appliances and an overall reduction of consumption after the introduction of real time feedback, unrelated to appliance ownership characteristics.

Paper-Based Hydroelectric Generators for Water Evaporation-Induced Electricity Generation.

Project description:The research presented in this paper introduces a novel environmental energy-harvesting technology that harnesses electricity from the evaporation of water using porous structural materials. Specifically, a strategy employing paper-based hydroelectric generators (p-HEGs) is proposed to capture the energy produced during water evaporation and convert it into usable electricity. The p-HEGs offer several advantages, including simplicity in fabrication, low cost, and reusability. To evaluate their effectiveness, the water evaporation-induced electrical output performance of four different p-HEGs are compared. Among the variants tested, the p-HEG combining wood pulp and polyester fiber exhibits the best output performance. At room temperature, this particular p-HEG generates a short-circuit current and open-circuit voltage of ≈0.4 µA and 0.3 V, respectively, thereby demonstrating excellent electrical stability. Furthermore, the electrical current and voltage generated by the p-HEG through water evaporation are able to power an LED light, both individually and in series and parallel connections. This study delves into the potential of electricity harvesting from water evaporation and establishes it as a viable method for renewable energy applications.

Paper-based synthetic gene networks.

Project description:Synthetic gene networks have wide-ranging uses in reprogramming and rewiring organisms. To date, there has not been a way to harness the vast potential of these networks beyond the constraints of a laboratory or in vivo environment. Here, we present an in vitro paper-based platform that provides an alternate, versatile venue for synthetic biologists to operate and a much-needed medium for the safe deployment of engineered gene circuits beyond the lab. Commercially available cell-free systems are freeze dried onto paper, enabling the inexpensive, sterile, and abiotic distribution of synthetic-biology-based technologies for the clinic, global health, industry, research, and education. For field use, we create circuits with colorimetric outputs for detection by eye and fabricate a low-cost, electronic optical interface. We demonstrate this technology with small-molecule and RNA actuation of genetic switches, rapid prototyping of complex gene circuits, and programmable in vitro diagnostics, including glucose sensors and strain-specific Ebola virus sensors.

New approach for optimal electricity planning and dispatching with hourly time-scale air quality and health considerations.

Project description:Integrating accurate air quality modeling with decision making is hampered by complex atmospheric physics and chemistry and its coupling with atmospheric transport. Existing approaches to model the physics and chemistry accurately lead to significant computational burdens in computing the response of atmospheric concentrations to changes in emissions profiles. By integrating a reduced form of a fully coupled atmospheric model within a unit commitment optimization model, we allow, for the first time to our knowledge, a fully dynamical approach toward electricity planning that accurately and rapidly minimizes both cost and health impacts. The reduced-form model captures the response of spatially resolved air pollutant concentrations to changes in electricity-generating plant emissions on an hourly basis with accuracy comparable to a comprehensive air quality model. The integrated model allows for the inclusion of human health impacts into cost-based decisions for power plant operation. We use the new capability in a case study of the state of Georgia over the years of 2004-2011, and show that a shift in utilization among existing power plants during selected hourly periods could have provided a health cost savings of $175.9 million dollars for an additional electricity generation cost of $83.6 million in 2007 US dollars (USD2007). The case study illustrates how air pollutant health impacts can be cost-effectively minimized by intelligently modulating power plant operations over multihour periods, without implementing additional emissions control technologies.

Data on the daily electricity load profile and solar photovoltaic (PV) system components for residential buildings in Lagos, Nigeria.

Project description:This article contains the average daily electric load profile (for 24 h of the day) for the five categories of residential buildings (duplex, single family bungalow, traditional court yard, flat/apartment dwelling and 'face-me-I-face-you') in three Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state of Lagos, Nigeria. In each of the LGAs, 10 buildings per residential building type were surveyed for the collection of data with the aid of a questionnaire. In each surveyed household, a household member completed the energy audit section of the questionnaire with the assistance of the questionnaire administrator while the section of the questionnaire designed as a time-of-use diary was left with the household for completion. For each building surveyed, the data retrieved from the completed time-of-use diary was used in Microsoft Excel for computing the hourly electricity load profile for the seven days of the week. In order to obtain the hourly energy load (in watts) for each building, the power rating of the appliances used during each of the 24 h of the day was summed and the result in watts was converted to kWh by dividing by 1000. Each dwelling's daily load profile was obtained as an average of the load profile for the seven days of the week. The article as well provides data on the solar photovoltaic systems' components designed to supply electricity to the building and the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of the systems for the base case scenario and different sensitivity cases obtained from simulations using HOMER Pro. The load profile data provided in this article can be reused by other researchers in the design of solar photovoltaic systems for residential buildings.

Modelling and mathematical optimisation of wastewater treatment in food industries.

Project description:The current paper describes the work carried out in the Horizon 2020 AFTERLIFE project - "Advanced Filtration TEchnologies for the Recovery and Later conversIon of relevant Fractions from wastEwater" - (Grant Agreement no. 745737) which focuses on bioprocess modelling and optimisation using computational tools. The project addresses the development of a flexible, cost- and resource-efficient process framed in the zero-waste and circular economy approach for the recovery and valorisation of the relevant fractions from wastewater. The first step of such a process is an initial step consisting of a cascade of membrane filtration units to separate the total solids in sewage. Then, the concentrates recovered in each unit will be treated to obtain high-pure extracts and metabolites or to be converted into value-added biopolymers (polyhydroxyalkanoates). Moreover, the outflow of the process is an ultra-pure water stream that can be directly reused. Following a holistic approach, the design and optimisation of the AFTERLIFE process will improve performance and reduce the costs associated with wastewater treatment by maximising the value recovery. The paper focuses on the work done developing and implementing computational tools to model and optimise the design of the process. A framework for modelling-based optimisation has been developed. The applied optimisation approach is not computationally demanding and can be systematically applied to different processes. Finally, a use case establishing a scenario for testing the developed framework is described. The defined process model and optimisation methodology were applied to simulate the treatment of wastewater from the fish processing industry. The performance of the optimisation tool is analysed considering the simulation results.

Biotechnological applications of functional metagenomics in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Project description:Microorganisms are found throughout nature, thriving in a vast range of environmental conditions. The majority of them are unculturable or difficult to culture by traditional methods. Metagenomics enables the study of all microorganisms, regardless of whether they can be cultured or not, through the analysis of genomic data obtained directly from an environmental sample, providing knowledge of the species present, and allowing the extraction of information regarding the functionality of microbial communities in their natural habitat. Function-based screenings, following the cloning and expression of metagenomic DNA in a heterologous host, can be applied to the discovery of novel proteins of industrial interest encoded by the genes of previously inaccessible microorganisms. Functional metagenomics has considerable potential in the food and pharmaceutical industries, where it can, for instance, aid (i) the identification of enzymes with desirable technological properties, capable of catalyzing novel reactions or replacing existing chemically synthesized catalysts which may be difficult or expensive to produce, and able to work under a wide range of environmental conditions encountered in food and pharmaceutical processing cycles including extreme conditions of temperature, pH, osmolarity, etc; (ii) the discovery of novel bioactives including antimicrobials active against microorganisms of concern both in food and medical settings; (iii) the investigation of industrial and societal issues such as antibiotic resistance development. This review article summarizes the state-of-the-art functional metagenomic methods available and discusses the potential of functional metagenomic approaches to mine as yet unexplored environments to discover novel genes with biotechnological application in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
