Thermochemical electronegativities of the elements.

ABSTRACT: Electronegativity is a key property of the elements. Being useful in rationalizing stability, structure and properties of molecules and solids, it has shaped much of the thinking in the fields of structural chemistry and solid state chemistry and physics. There are many definitions of electronegativity, which can be roughly classified as either spectroscopic (these are defined for isolated atoms) or thermochemical (characterizing bond energies and heats of formation of compounds). The most widely used is the thermochemical Pauling's scale, where electronegativities have units of eV^-1/2. Here we identify drawbacks in the definition of Pauling's electronegativity scale-and, correcting them, arrive at our thermochemical scale, where electronegativities are dimensionless numbers. Our scale displays intuitively correct trends for the 118 elements and leads to an improved description of chemical bonding (e.g., bond polarity) and thermochemistry.

Thermochemical Studies of Small Carbohydrates.

Project description:Despite their prevalence in biomass and importance in biochemistry, there is still much to be learned about simple carbohydrates. Gas-phase calculations are reported here on two trioses and three tetroses. For aldotetroses, both the open-chain and furanose forms are considered. Enthalpies of reduction to polyols are calculated at the CBS-APNO level of theory, and comparisons to simple aldehydes and ketones are made. Heats of formation are calculated in two ways with overall good agreement. The heat of formation of glyceraldehyde obtained from modified HEAT calculations is also reported. Finally, calculated bond energies are presented, and the influence of the structure on the bond energies is discussed.

Thermochemical Study of 1-Methylhydantoin.

Project description:Using static bomb combustion calorimetry, the combustion energy of 1-methylhydantoin was obtained, from which the standard molar enthalpy of formation of the crystalline phase at T = 298.15 K of the compound studied was calculated. Through thermogravimetry, mass loss rates were measured as a function of temperature, from which the enthalpy of vaporization was calculated. Additionally, some properties of fusion were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, such as enthalpy and temperature. Adding the enthalpy of fusion to the enthalpy of vaporization, the enthalpy of sublimation of the compound was obtained at T = 298.15 K. By combining the enthalpy of formation of the compound in crystalline phase with its enthalpy of sublimation, the respective standard molar enthalpy of formation in the gas phase was calculated. On the other hand, the results obtained in the present work were compared with those of other derivatives of hydantoin, with which the effect of the change of some substituents in the base heterocyclic ring was evaluated.

Thermochemical studies of epoxides and related compounds.

Project description:Gas-phase heats of formation for the four butene oxide isomers are reported. They were obtained by measuring the condensed-phase heat of reduction to the corresponding alcohol using reaction calorimetry. Heats of vaporization were determined and allow gas-phase heats of formation to be obtained. The experimental measurements are compared to calculations obtained using a variety of computational methods. Overall, the G3 and CBS-APNO methods agree quite well with the experimental data. The influence of alkyl substituents on epoxide stability is discussed. Comparisons to alkenes, cyclopropanes, aziridines, thiiranes, and phosphiranes are also made. Isodesmic-type reactions were used to determine strain energies of the epoxides and related compounds with various substituents.

Thermochemical functionalisation of graphenes with minimal framework damage.

Project description:Graphene and graphene nanoplatelets can be functionalised via a gas-phase thermochemical method; the approach is versatile, readily scalable, and avoids the introduction of additional defects by exploiting existing sites. Direct TEM imaging confirmed covalent modification of single layer graphene, without damaging the connectivity of the lattice, as supported by Raman spectrometry and AFM nano-indentation measurements of mechanical stiffness. The grafting methodology can also be applied to commercially-available bulk graphene nanoplatelets, as illustrated by the preparation of anionic, cationic, and non-ionic derivatives. Successful bulk functionalisation is evidenced by TGA, Raman, and XPS, as well as in dramatic changes in aqueous dispersability. Thermochemical functionalisation thus provides a facile approach to modify both graphene monolayers, and a wide range of graphene-related nanocarbons, using variants of simple CVD equipment.

Thermochemical Measurements of Alkali Cation Association to Hexatantalate.

Project description:Ion association is an important process in aqueous dissolution, precipitation, and crystallization of ionic inorganic, organic, and biological materials. Polyoxometalates (POMs) are good model compounds for understanding the complex relationships between lattice energy, ion-pairing in solution, and salt solubility. Here we perform calorimetric measurements to elucidate trends in cluster stability, lattice energy, and ion-pairing behavior studies of simple hexatantalate salts in neat water, parent hydroxide solutions, and molybdate melts, extending previous studies on the isostructural hexaniobates. High temperature calorimetry of alkali salts of hexatantalate reveals that the enthalpies of formation from oxides of the K, Rb, and Cs salts are more similar to each other than they are for their niobate analogues and that the tantalate cluster is energetically less stable than hexaniobate. Aqueous dissolution calorimetry reveals that the cesium salt of hexatantalate has a similar concentration dependence on its dissolution enthalpy to that of hexaniobate. However, unlike rubidium hexaniobate, rubidium hexatantalate also exhibits increased concentration dependence, indicating that hextantalate can undergo increased ion-pairing with alkali salts other than cesium, despite the dilute environments studied. Dissolution enthalpies of POM salts in the parent alkali hydroxides shows that protonation of clusters stabilizes lattices even more than the strongly associating heavy alkali cations do. Additionally, neither weak nor strong lattice ion associations necessarily correlates with respectively high or low aqueous solubility. These studies illuminate the importance of considering ion-pairing among the interrelated processes in the aqueous dissolution of ionic salts that can be extended to serving as a model of cation association to metal oxide surfaces.

Design Principles of Perovskites for Thermochemical Oxygen Separation.

Project description:Separation and concentration of O2 from gas mixtures is central to several sustainable energy technologies, such as solar-driven synthesis of liquid hydrocarbon fuels from CO2 , H2 O, and concentrated sunlight. We introduce a rationale for designing metal oxide redox materials for oxygen separation through "thermochemical pumping" of O2 against a pO2 gradient with low-grade process heat. Electronic structure calculations show that the activity of O vacancies in metal oxides pinpoints the ideal oxygen exchange capacity of perovskites. Thermogravimetric analysis and high-temperature X-ray diffraction for SrCoO3-δ , BaCoO3-δ and BaMnO3-δ perovskites and Ag2 O and Cu2 O references confirm the predicted performance of SrCoO3-δ , which surpasses the performance of state-of-the-art Cu2 O at these conditions with an oxygen exchange capacity of 44 mmol O 2 mol SrCoO 3-δ(-1) exchanged at 12.1 μmol O 2 min(-1) g(-1) at 600-900 K. The redox trends are understood due to lattice expansion and electronic charge transfer.

Low-temperature, manganese oxide-based, thermochemical water splitting cycle.

Project description:Thermochemical cycles that split water into stoichiometric amounts of hydrogen and oxygen below 1,000 °C, and do not involve toxic or corrosive intermediates, are highly desirable because they can convert heat into chemical energy in the form of hydrogen. We report a manganese-based thermochemical cycle with a highest operating temperature of 850 °C that is completely recyclable and does not involve toxic or corrosive components. The thermochemical cycle utilizes redox reactions of Mn(II)/Mn(III) oxides. The shuttling of Na(+) into and out of the manganese oxides in the hydrogen and oxygen evolution steps, respectively, provides the key thermodynamic driving forces and allows for the cycle to be closed at temperatures below 1,000 °C. The production of hydrogen and oxygen is fully reproducible for at least five cycles.

Single-Use Disposable Waste Upcycling via Thermochemical Conversion Pathway.

Project description:Herein, the pyrolysis of two types of single-use disposable waste (single-use food containers and corrugated fiberboard) was investigated as an approach to cleanly dispose of municipal solid waste, including plastic waste. For the pyrolysis of single-use food containers or corrugated fiberboard, an increase in temperature tended to increase the yield of pyrolytic gas (i.e., non-condensable gases) and decrease the yield of pyrolytic liquid (i.e., a mixture of condensable compounds) and solid residue. The single-use food container-derived pyrolytic product was largely composed of hydrocarbons with a wide range of carbon numbers from C1 to C32, while the corrugated fiberboard-derived pyrolytic product was composed of a variety of chemical groups such as phenolic compounds, polycyclic aromatic compounds, and oxygenates involving alcohols, acids, aldehydes, ketones, acetates, and esters. Changes in the pyrolysis temperature from 500 °C to 900 °C had no significant effect on the selectivity toward each chemical group found in the pyrolytic liquid derived from either the single-use food containers or corrugated fiberboard. The co-pyrolysis of the single-use food containers and corrugated fiberboard led to 6 times higher hydrogen (H2) selectivity than the pyrolysis of the single-use food containers only. Furthermore, the co-pyrolysis did not form phenolic compounds or polycyclic aromatic compounds that are hazardous environmental pollutants (0% selectivity), indicating that the co-pyrolysis process is an eco-friendly method to treat single-use disposable waste.

Evidence of magnetic isotope effects during thermochemical sulfate reduction.

Project description:Thermochemical sulfate reduction experiments with simple amino acid and dilute concentrations of sulfate reveal significant degrees of mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionation. Enrichments of up to 13‰ for (33)S are attributed to a magnetic isotope effect (MIE) associated with the formation of thiol-disulfide, ion-radical pairs. Observed (36)S depletions in products are explained here by classical (mass-dependent) isotope effects and mixing processes. The experimental data contrasts strongly with multiple sulfur isotope trends in Archean samples, which exhibit significant (36)S anomalies. These results support an origin other than thermochemical sulfate reduction for the mass-independent signals observed for early Earth samples.

From CdSe Nanoplatelets to Quantum Rings by Thermochemical Edge Reconfiguration.

Project description:The variation in the shape of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) remains intriguing. This interest goes beyond crystallography as the shape of the NC determines its energy levels and optoelectronic properties. While thermodynamic arguments point to a few or just a single shape(s), terminated by the most stable crystal facets, a remarkable variation in NC shape has been reported for many different compounds. For instance, for the well-studied case of CdSe, close-to-spherical quantum dots, rods, two-dimensional nanoplatelets, and quantum rings have been reported. Here, we report how two-dimensional CdSe nanoplatelets reshape into quantum rings. We monitor the reshaping in real time by combining atomically resolved structural characterization with optical absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. We observe that CdSe units leave the vertical sides of the edges and recrystallize on the top and bottom edges of the nanoplatelets, resulting in a thickening of the rims. The formation of a central hole, rendering the shape into a ring, only occurs at a more elevated temperature.
