Precisely spun super rotors.

ABSTRACT: Improved optical control of molecular quantum states promises new applications including chemistry in the quantum regime, precision tests of fundamental physics, and quantum information processing. While much work has sought to prepare ground state molecules, excited states are also of interest. Here, we demonstrate a broadband optical approach to pump trapped SiO⁺ molecules into pure super rotor ensembles maintained for many minutes. Super rotor ensembles pumped up to rotational state N = 67, corresponding to the peak of a 9400 K distribution, had a narrow N spread comparable to that of a few-kelvin sample, and were used for spectroscopy of the previously unobserved C²Π state. Significant centrifugal distortion of super rotors pumped up to N = 230 allowed probing electronic structure of SiO⁺ stretched far from its equilibrium bond length.

Hydroxyl super rotors from vacuum ultraviolet photodissociation of water.

Project description:Hydroxyl radicals (OH) play a central role in the interstellar medium. Here, we observe highly rotationally excited OH radicals with energies above the bond dissociation energy, termed OH "super rotors", from the vacuum ultraviolet photodissociation of water. The most highly excited OH(X) super rotors identified at 115.2 nm photolysis have an internal energy of 4.86 eV. A striking enhancement in the yield of vibrationally-excited OH super rotors is detected when exciting the bending vibration of the water molecule. Theoretical analysis shows that bending excitation enhances the probability of non-adiabatic coupling between the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] states of water at collinear O-H-H geometries following fast internal conversion from the initially excited [Formula: see text] state. The present study illustrates a route to produce extremely rotationally excited OH(X) radicals from vacuum ultraviolet water photolysis, which may be related to the production of the highly rotationally excited OH(X) radicals observed in the interstellar medium.

Collisional dynamics in a gas of molecular super-rotors.

Project description:Recently, femtosecond laser techniques have been developed that are capable of bringing gas molecules to extremely fast rotation in a very short time, while keeping their translational motion relatively slow. Here we study collisional equilibration dynamics of this new state of molecular gases. We show that the route to equilibrium starts with a metastable 'gyroscopic stage' in the course of which the molecules maintain their fast rotation and orientation of the angular momentum through many collisions. The inhibited rotational-translational relaxation is characterized by a persistent anisotropy in the molecular angular distribution, and is manifested in the optical birefringence and anisotropic diffusion in the gas. After a certain induction time, the 'gyroscopic stage' is abruptly terminated by an explosive rotational-translational energy exchange, leading the gas towards the final equilibrium. We illustrate our conclusions by direct molecular dynamics simulation of several gases of linear molecules.

Diamond rotors.

Project description:The resolution of magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra remains bounded by the spinning frequency, which is limited by the material strength of MAS rotors. Since diamond is capable of withstanding 1.5-2.5x greater MAS frequencies, compared to state-of-the art zirconia, we fabricated rotors from single crystal diamond. When combined with bearings optimized for spinning with helium gas, diamond rotors could achieve the highest MAS frequencies to date. Furthermore, the excellent microwave transmission properties and thermal conductivity of diamond could improve sensitivity enhancements in dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) experiments. The fabrication protocol we report involves novel laser micromachining and produced rotors that presently spin at ωr/2π = 111.000 ± 0.004 kHz, with stable spinning up to 124 kHz, using N2 gas as the driving fluid. We present the first proton-detected 13C/15N MAS spectra recorded using diamond rotors, a critical step towards studying currently inaccessible ex-vivo protein samples with MAS NMR. Previously, the high aspect ratio of MAS rotors (∼10:1) precluded fabrication of MAS rotors from diamond.

Direct observation of coherence transfer and rotational-to-vibrational energy exchange in optically centrifuged CO<sub>2</sub> super-rotors.

Project description:Optical centrifuges are laser-based molecular traps that can rotationally accelerate molecules to energies rivalling or exceeding molecular bond energies. Here we report time and frequency-resolved ultrafast coherent Raman measurements of optically centrifuged CO2 at 380 Torr spun to energies beyond its bond dissociation energy of 5.5 eV (Jmax = 364, Erot = 6.14 eV, Erot/kB = 71, 200 K). The entire rotational ladder from J = 24 to J = 364 was resolved simultaneously which enabled a more accurate measurement of the centrifugal distortion constants for CO2. Remarkably, coherence transfer was directly observed, and time-resolved, during the field-free relaxation of the trap as rotational energy flowed into bending-mode vibrational excitation. Vibrationally excited CO2 (ν2 > 3) was observed in the time-resolved spectra to populate after 3 mean collision times as a result of rotational-to-vibrational (R-V) energy transfer. Trajectory simulations show an optimal range of J for R-V energy transfer. Dephasing rates for molecules rotating up to 5.5 times during one collision were quantified. Very slow decays of the vibrational hot band rotational coherences suggest that they are sustained by coherence transfer and line mixing.

Universal optothermal micro/nanoscale rotors.

Project description:Rotation of micro/nano-objects is important for micro/nanorobotics, three-dimensional imaging, and lab-on-a-chip systems. Optical rotation techniques are especially attractive because of their fuel-free and remote operation. However, current techniques require laser beams with designed intensity profile and polarization or objects with sophisticated shapes or optical birefringence. These requirements make it challenging to use simple optical setups for light-driven rotation of many highly symmetric or isotropic objects, including biological cells. Here, we report a universal approach to the out-of-plane rotation of various objects, including spherically symmetric and isotropic particles, using an arbitrary low-power laser beam. Moreover, the laser beam is positioned away from the objects to reduce optical damage from direct illumination. The rotation mechanism based on opto-thermoelectrical coupling is elucidated by rigorous experiments combined with multiscale simulations. With its general applicability and excellent biocompatibility, our universal light-driven rotation platform is instrumental for various scientific research and engineering applications.

Improved Thermoelectric Properties in Melt-Spun SnTe.

Project description:SnTe has been the focus of numerous experimental and theoretical studies over the last years owing to its high thermoelectric performances near 800 K when appropriately doped. Here, we demonstrate that melt-spinning, an ultrafast-quenching synthesis technique, followed by spark plasma sintering results in enhanced ZT values in polycrystalline SnTe. To illustrate the impact of this technique, the results are contrasted with those obtained on two polycrystalline samples prepared by direct quenching of molten SnTe and without quenching. SnTe melt-spun ribbons are characterized by a peculiar columnar microstructure that contributes to lower the lattice thermal conductivity below 700 K in pressed samples. More importantly, this technique results in a significant decrease in the hole concentration, giving rise to enhanced thermopower values above 500 K. The variation in the hole concentration is likely due to a slight loss of elemental Te during the melt-spinning process. Thanks to the decreased hole concentration, the thermoelectric performances are significantly enhanced with a peak ZT value of 0.6 at 800 K, which represents a 40% increase over the values measured for samples prepared with and without quenching. These findings indicate that melt-spinning provides a novel strategy to improve the thermoelectric properties of SnTe that could be worthwhile extending to substituted compounds.

Centrifugally Spun Recycled PET: Processing and Characterization.

Project description:Centrifugal spinning, which is a high-productivity fiber fabrication technique, was used to produce a value-added product from recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (rPET). In the present study, rPET fibers, with fiber diameters ranging from submicron to micrometer in scale, were fabricated by spinning a solution of rPET in a mixture of dichloromethane and trifluoroacetic acid. The influence of the polymer solution concentration (the viscosity), the rotational speed of the spinneret, and the inner diameter of the needles on the formation and morphology and mechanical properties of the fibers were examined through scanning electron microscopy and using a tensile testing machine. The thermal behaviors of fibrous mats with various average diameters were also investigated through differential scanning calorimetry. The smoothest and smallest fibers, with an average diameter of 619 nm, were generated using an rPET solution of 10 wt % under a rotation speed of 15,000 rpm using needles having an inner diameter of 160 μm. The fibrous mats have an average tensile strength and modulus of 4.3 MPa and 34.4 MPa, respectively. The productivity and the mechanical properties indicate that centrifugal spinning is an effective technique to fabricate high-value product from rPET.

Rotors exhibit greater surface ECG variation during ventricular fibrillation than focal sources due to wavebreak, secondary rotors, and meander.

Project description:IntroductionVentricular fibrillation is a common life-threatening arrhythmia. The ECG of VF appears chaotic but may allow identification of sustaining mechanisms to guide therapy.HypothesisWe hypothesized that rotors and focal sources manifest distinct features on the ECG, and computational modeling may identify mechanisms of such features.MethodsVF induction was attempted in 31 patients referred for ventricular arrhythmia ablation. Simultaneous surface ECG and intracardiac electrograms were recorded using biventricular basket catheters. Endocardial phase maps were used to mechanistically classify each VF cycle as rotor or focally driven. ECGs were analyzed from patients demonstrating both mechanisms in the primary analysis and from all patients with induced VF in the secondary analysis. The ECG voltage variation during each mechanism was compared. Biventricular computer simulations of VF driven by focal sources or rotors were created and resulting ECGs of each VF mechanism were compared.ResultsRotor-based VF exhibited greater voltage variation than focal source-based VF in both the primary analysis (n = 8, 110 ± 24% vs. 55 ± 32%, P = 0.02) and the secondary analysis (n = 18, 103 ± 30% vs. 67 ± 34%, P = 0.009). Computational VF simulations also revealed greater voltage variation in rotors compared to focal sources (110 ± 19% vs. 33 ± 16%, P = 0.001), and demonstrated that this variation was due to wavebreak, secondary rotor initiation, and rotor meander.ConclusionClinical and computational studies reveal that quantitative criteria of ECG voltage variation differ significantly between VF-sustaining rotors and focal sources, and provide insight into the mechanisms of such variation. Future studies should prospectively evaluate if these criteria can separate clinical VF mechanisms and guide therapy.
