Monomers from CO₂ : Superbases as Catalysts for Formate-to-Oxalate Coupling.

ABSTRACT: An interesting contribution to solving the climate crisis involves the use of CO₂ as a feedstock for monomers to produce sustainable plastics. In the European Horizon 2020 project "OCEAN" a continuous multistep process from CO₂ to oxalic acid and derivatives is developed, starting with the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to potassium formate. The subsequent formate-to-oxalate coupling is a reaction that has been studied and commercially used for over 150 years. With the introduction of superbases as catalysts under moisture-free conditions unprecedented improvements were shown for the formate coupling reaction. With isotopic labelling experiments the presence of carbonite as an intermediate was proven during the reaction, and with a unique operando set-up the kinetics were studied. Ultimately, the required reaction temperature could be dropped from 400 to below 200 °C, and the reaction time could be reduced from 10 to 1 min whilst achieving 99 % oxalate yield.

Stepping Stones in CO2 Utilization: Optimizing the Formate to Oxalate Coupling Reaction Using Response Surface Modeling.

Project description:One of the crucial steps for the conversion of CO2 into polymers is the catalytic formate to oxalate coupling reaction (FOCR). Formate can be obtained from the (electro)catalytic reduction of CO2, while oxalate can be further processed toward building blocks for modern plastics. In its 175 year history, multiple parameters for the FOCR have been suggested to be of importance. Yet, no comprehensive understanding considering all those parameters is available. Hence, we aim to assess the relative impact of all those parameters and deduce the optimal reaction conditions for the FOCR. We follow a systematic two-stage approach in which we first evaluate the most suitable categorical variables of catalyst, potential poisons, and reaction atmospheres. In the second stage, we evaluate the impact of the continuous variables temperature, reaction time, catalyst loading, and active gas removal within previously proposed ranges, using a response surface modeling methodology. We found KOH to be the most suitable catalyst, and it allows yields of up to 93%. Water was found to be the strongest poison, and its efficient removal increased oxalate yields by 35%. The most promising reaction atmosphere is hydrogen, with the added benefit of being equal to the gas produced in the reaction. The temperature has the highest impact on the reaction, followed by reaction time and purge rates. We found no significant impact of catalyst loading on the reaction within the ranges reported previously. This research provides a clear and concise multiparameter optimization of the FOCR and provides insight into the reaction cascade involving the formation and decomposition of oxalates from formate.

Iron catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation to formate enhanced by Lewis acid co-catalysts.

Project description:A family of iron(ii) carbonyl hydride complexes supported by either a bifunctional PNP ligand containing a secondary amine, or a PNP ligand with a tertiary amine that prevents metal-ligand cooperativity, were found to promote the catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to formate in the presence of Brønsted base. In both cases a remarkable enhancement in catalytic activity was observed upon the addition of Lewis acid (LA) co-catalysts. For the secondary amine supported system, turnover numbers of approximately 9000 for formate production were achieved, while for catalysts supported by the tertiary amine ligand, nearly 60 000 turnovers were observed; the highest activity reported for an earth abundant catalyst to date. The LA co-catalysts raise the turnover number by more than an order of magnitude in each case. In the secondary amine system, mechanistic investigations implicated the LA in disrupting an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the PNP ligand N-H moiety and the carbonyl oxygen of a formate ligand in the catalytic resting state. This destabilization of the iron-bound formate accelerates product extrusion, the rate-limiting step in catalysis. In systems supported by ligands with the tertiary amine, it was demonstrated that the LA enhancement originates from cation assisted substitution of formate for dihydrogen during the slow step in catalysis.

Zn-induced electron-rich Sn catalysts enable highly efficient CO2 electroreduction to formate.

Project description:Renewable-energy-driven CO2 electroreduction provides a promising way to address the growing greenhouse effect issue and produce value-added chemicals. As one of the bulk chemicals, formic acid/formate has the highest revenue per mole of electrons among various products. However, the scaling up of CO2-to-formate for practical applications with high faradaic efficiency (FE) and current density is constrained by the difficulty of precisely reconciling the competing intermediates (*COOH and HCOO*). Herein, a Zn-induced electron-rich Sn electrocatalyst was reported for CO2-to-formate with high efficiency. The faradaic efficiency of formate (FEformate) could reach 96.6%, and FEformate > 90% was maintained at formate partial current density up to 625.4 mA cm-1. Detailed study indicated that catalyst reconstruction occurred during electrolysis. With appropriate electron accumulation, the electron-rich Sn catalyst could facilitate the adsorption and activation of CO2 molecules to form a intermediate and then promoted the carbon protonation of to yield a HCOO* intermediate. Afterwards, the HCOO* → HCOOH* proceeded via another proton-coupled electron transfer process, leading to high activity and selectivity for formate production.

Continuous electroproduction of formate via CO2 reduction on local symmetry-broken single-atom catalysts.

Project description:Atomic-level coordination engineering is an efficient strategy for tuning the catalytic performance of single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, their rational design has so far been plagued by the lack of a universal correlation between the coordination symmetry and catalytic properties. Herein, we synthesised planar-symmetry-broken CuN3 (PSB-CuN3) SACs through microwave heating for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. Remarkably, the as-prepared catalysts exhibited a selectivity of 94.3% towards formate at -0.73 V vs. RHE, surpassing the symmetrical CuN4 catalyst (72.4% at -0.93 V vs. RHE). In a flow cell equipped with a PSB-CuN3 electrode, over 90% formate selectivity was maintained at an average current density of 94.4 mA cm-2 during 100 h operation. By combining definitive structural identification with operando X-ray spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, we revealed that the intrinsic local symmetry breaking from planar D4h configuration induces an unconventional dsp hybridisation, and thus a strong correlation between the catalytic activity and microenvironment of metal centre (i.e., coordination number and distortion), with high preference for formate production in CuN3 moiety. The finding opens an avenue for designing efficient SACs with specific local symmetries for selective electrocatalysis.

Mitigating the Poisoning Effect of Formate during CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Co-Containing Dual-Atom Oxide Catalysts.

Project description:During the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol over mixed-oxide catalysts, the strong adsorption of CO2 and formate poses a barrier for H2 dissociation, limiting methanol selectivity and productivity. Here we show that by using Co-containing dual-atom oxide catalysts, the poisoning effect can be countered by separating the site for H2 dissociation and the adsorption of intermediates. We synthesized a Co- and In-doped ZrO2 catalyst (Co-In-ZrO2) containing atomically dispersed Co and In species. Catalyst characterization showed that Co and In atoms were atomically dispersed and were in proximity to each other owing to a random distribution. During the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, the Co atom was responsible for the adsorption of CO2 and formate species, while the nearby In atoms promoted the hydrogenation of adsorbed intermediates. The cooperative effect increased the methanol selectivity to 86% over the dual-atom catalyst, and methanol productivity increased 2-fold in comparison to single-atom catalysts. This cooperative effect was extended to Co-Zn and Co-Ga doped ZrO2 catalysts. This work presents a different approach to designing mixed-oxide catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation based on the preferential adsorption of substrates and intermediates instead of promoting H2 dissociation to mitigate the poisonous effects of substrates and intermediates.

Chemically coupling SnO2 quantum dots and MXene for efficient CO2 electroreduction to formate and Zn-CO2 battery.

Project description:Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into formate is a promising strategy for mitigating the energy and environmental crisis, but simultaneously achieving high selectivity and activity of electrocatalysts remains challenging. Here, we report low-dimensional SnO2 quantum dots chemically coupled with ultrathin Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets (SnO2/MXene) that boost the CO2 conversion. The coupling structure is well visualized and verified by high-resolution electron tomography together with nanoscale scanning transmission X-ray microscopy and ptychography imaging. The catalyst achieves a large partial current density of -57.8 mA cm-2 and high Faradaic efficiency of 94% for formate formation. Additionally, the SnO2/MXene cathode shows excellent Zn-CO2 battery performance, with a maximum power density of 4.28 mW cm-2, an open-circuit voltage of 0.83 V, and superior rechargeability of 60 h. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis and first-principles calculations reveal that this remarkable performance is attributed to the unique and stable structure of the SnO2/MXene, which can significantly reduce the reaction energy of CO2 hydrogenation to formate by increasing the surface coverage of adsorbed hydrogen.

Theory-guided development of homogeneous catalysts for the reduction of CO2 to formate, formaldehyde, and methanol derivatives.

Project description:The stepwise catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to formic acid, formaldehyde, and methanol opens non-fossil pathways to important platform chemicals. The present article aims at identifying molecular control parameters to steer the selectivity to the three distinct reduction levels using organometallic catalysts of earth-abundant first-row metals. A linear scaling relationship was developed to map the intrinsic reactivity of 3d transition metal pincer complexes to their activity and selectivity in CO2 hydrosilylation. The hydride affinity of the catalysts was used as a descriptor to predict activity/selectivity trends in a composite volcano picture, and the outstanding properties of cobalt complexes bearing bis(phosphino)triazine PNP-type pincer ligands to reach the three reduction levels selectively under different reaction conditions could thus be rationalized. The implications of the composite volcano picture were successfully experimentally validated with selected catalysts, and the challenging intermediate level of formaldehyde could be accessed in over 80% yield with the cobalt complex 6. The results underpin the potential of tandem computational-experimental approaches to propel catalyst design for CO2-based chemical transformations.

A Pair-Electrosynthesis for Formate at Ultra-Low Voltage Via Coupling of CO2 Reduction and Formaldehyde Oxidation.

Project description:Formate can be synthesized electrochemically by CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) or formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR). The CO2RR approach suffers from kinetic-sluggish oxygen evolution reaction at the anode. To this end, an electrochemical system combining cathodic CO2RR with anodic FOR was developed, which enables the formate electrosynthesis at ultra-low voltage. Cathodic CO2RR employing the BiOCl electrode in H-cell exhibited formate Faradaic efficiency (FE) higher than 90% within a wide potential range from - 0.48 to - 1.32 VRHE. In flow cell, the current density of 100 mA cm-2 was achieved at - 0.67 VRHE. The anodic FOR using the Cu2O electrode displayed a low onset potential of - 0.13 VRHE and nearly 100% formate and H2 selectivity from 0.05 to 0.35 VRHE. The CO2RR and FOR were constructed in a flow cell through membrane electrode assembly for the electrosynthesis of formate, where the CO2RR//FOR delivered an enhanced current density of 100 mA cm-2 at 0.86 V. This work provides a promising pair-electrosynthesis of value-added chemicals with high FE and low energy consumption.

Real flue gas CO2 hydrogenation to formate by an enzymatic reactor using O2- and CO-tolerant hydrogenase and formate dehydrogenase.

Project description:It is challenging to capture carbon dioxide (CO2), a major greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, due to its high chemical stability. One potential practical solution to eliminate CO2 is to convert CO2 into formate using hydrogen (H2) (CO2 hydrogenation), which can be accomplished with inexpensive hydrogen from sustainable sources. While industrial flue gas could provide an adequate source of hydrogen, a suitable catalyst is needed that can tolerate other gas components, such as carbon monoxide (CO) and oxygen (O2), potential inhibitors. Our proposed CO2 hydrogenation system uses the hydrogenase derived from Ralstonia eutropha H16 (ReSH) and formate dehydrogenase derived from Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 (MeFDH1). Both enzymes are tolerant to CO and O2, which are typical inhibitors of metalloenzymes found in flue gas. We have successfully demonstrated that combining ReSH- and MeFDH1-immobilized resins can convert H2 and CO2 in real flue gas to formate via a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent cascade reaction. We anticipated that this enzyme system would enable the utilization of diverse H2 and CO2 sources, including waste gases, biomass, and gasified plastics.

Energetics for CO2 Reduction by Molybdenum-Containing Formate Dehydrogenase.

Project description:The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased in a dangerous way during the past century. Methods to decrease this level are therefore of high interest at present. Inspiration to do so in an efficient way could come from biological systems. Molybdenum-containing formate dehydrogenase (Mo-FDH) is one of the most interesting enzymes in this respect. For example, the reduction potential required is not very low. The normal reaction catalyzed by Mo-FDH is actually the opposite one of oxidizing formate to CO2. However, recent electrochemical studies have shown that the reaction can be reversed by a moderate lowering of the reduction potential. The goal of the present study has been to study the full mechanism of Mo-FDH, particularly in the most interesting direction of reducing CO2, which has not been done before. The methods used are the same as those that have been shown to give excellent results for redox enzymes in all cases they have been tested. The results obtained for Mo-FDH are also in excellent agreement with the experimental results.
