A giant spin molecule with ninety-six parallel unpaired electrons.

ABSTRACT: Unpaired electrons which are essential for organic radicals and magnetic materials are hardly to align parallel, especially upon the increasing of spin numbers. Here, we show that the antiferromagnetic interaction in the largest Cr(III)-RE (rare earth) cluster {Cr₁₀RE₁₈} leads to 96 parallel electrons, forming a ground spin state S _T of 48 for RE = Gd. This is so far the third largest ground spin state achieved in one molecule. Moreover, by using the classical Monte Carlo simulation, the exchange coupling constants Jij can be determined. Spin dynamics simulation reveals that the strong Zeeman effects of 18 Gd(III) ions stabilize the ground ferrimagnetic state and hinder the magnetization reversals of these spins. In addition, the dysprosium(III) analog is an exchange-biasing single-molecule magnet. We believe that the ferrimagnetic approach and analytical protocol established in this work can be applied generally in constructing and analyzing giant spin molecules.

Magnetic exchange interaction between unpaired π- and d-electrons in nanographene-metal coordination complexes.

Project description:The combination of open-shell nanographenes (NGs) and magnetic transition metals holds great promise for generating various new quantum phases applicable in spintronics and quantum information technologies. However, a crucial aspect in accomplishing this is to comprehend the magnetic exchange interactions between unpaired π- and d-electrons, a topic that has been seldom addressed. In this study, we focus on magnetic π-d exchange interactions between open-shell NGs and a magnetic coordination center of Fe or Co by employing scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We synthesize two sets of NG-metal coordination complexes on a Au(111) substrate, secured by coordination bonds of carboxyl acid-Fe (Co). Through analysis of the excitation spectra, we observe a characteristic exchange coupling of 9 meV (5 meV) between the unpaired π-electron and the Fe (Co) d-shell electrons. Our experimental findings are qualitatively in agreement with multiconfigurational quantum chemistry calculations. This work provides evidence that a substantial magnetic exchange coupling can be achieved and engineered in metal-organic coordination systems, paving the way for designing and customizing extended radical metal-organic frameworks with precisely tailored magnetic properties.

Reverse dynamic nuclear polarisation for indirect detection of nuclear spins close to unpaired electrons.

Project description:Polarisation transfer schemes and indirect detection are central to magnetic resonance. Using the trityl radical OX063 and a pulse electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer operating in the Q-band (35 GHz, 1.2 T), we show here that it is possible to use pulsed dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP) to transfer polarisation from electrons to protons and back. The latter is achieved by first saturating the electrons and then simply using a reverse DNP step. A variable mixing time between DNP and reverse DNP allows us to investigate the decay of polarisation on protons in the vicinity of the electrons. We qualitatively investigate the influence of solvent deuteration, temperature, and electron concentration. We expect reverse DNP to be useful in the investigation of nuclear spin diffusion and envisage its use in electron-nuclear double-resonance (ENDOR) experiments.

Spin-polarised electrons in a one-magnet-only Mott spin junction.

Project description:The current flowing through a Mott spin junction depends on the relative spin orientation of the two ferromagnetic layers comprising the "source" and "drain" sides of the junction. The resulting current asymmetry is detected as giant or tunnelling magnetoresistance depending on whether the two ferromagnets are separated by a metal or an insulator. Based on the fundamental principles of reciprocity for spin-dependent electron scattering, one can envisage a one-magnet-only spin junction in which the source is non-magnetic, and the spin information is encoded by the spin polarisation of the electrons that have crossed or are backscattered from the drain magnetic layer. The practical significance of using an unpolarised source is that the state of the magnetic layer can be modified without affecting the process of probing it. Whether this reciprocity is realised in the actual junctions is not yet known. Here, we demonstrate a nano-sized, one-magnet-only Mott spin junction by measuring the finite spin polarisation of the backscattered electrons. Based on this finding, we conclude that since the junction acts as a spin filter, the magnetic layer must experience a spin transfer that could become detectable in view of the high current densities achievable in this technology.

Coherent Spin Dynamics of Electrons in CdSe Colloidal Nanoplatelets.

Project description:Coherent spin dynamics of electrons in CdSe colloidal nanoplatelets are investigated by time-resolved pump-probe Faraday rotation at room and cryogenic temperatures. We measure electron spin precession in a magnetic field and determine g-factors of 1.83 and 1.72 at low temperatures for nanoplatelets with a thickness of 3 and 4 monolayers, respectively. The dephasing time of spin precession T2* amounts to a few nanoseconds and has a weak dependence on temperature, while the longitudinal spin relaxation time T1 exceeds 10 ns even at room temperature. Observations of single and double electron spin-flips confirm that the nanoplatelets are negatively charged. The spin-flip Raman scattering technique reveals g-factor anisotropy by up to 10% in nanoplatelets with thicknesses of 3, 4, and 5 monolayers. In the ensemble with a random orientation of nanoplatelets, our theoretical analysis shows that the measured Larmor precession frequency corresponds to the in-plane electron g-factor. We conclude that the experimentally observed electron spin dephasing and its acceleration in the magnetic field are not provided by the electron g-factor anisotropy and can be related to the localization of the resident electrons and fluctuations of the localization potential.

Relativistic electrons generated at Earth's quasi-parallel bow shock.

Project description:Plasma shocks are the primary means of accelerating electrons in planetary and astrophysical settings throughout the universe. Which category of shocks, quasi-perpendicular or quasi-parallel, accelerates electrons more efficiently is debated. Although quasi-perpendicular shocks are thought to be more efficient electron accelerators, relativistic electron energies recently observed at quasi-parallel shocks exceed theoretical expectations. Using in situ observations at Earth's bow shock, we show that such relativistic electrons are generated by the interaction between the quasi-parallel shock and a related nonlinear structure, a foreshock transient, through two betatron accelerations. Our observations show that foreshock transients, overlooked previously, can increase electron acceleration efficiency at a quasi-parallel shock by an order of magnitude. Thus, quasi-parallel shocks could be more important in generating relativistic electrons, such as cosmic ray electrons, than previously thought.

Giant spin ensembles in waveguide magnonics.

Project description:The dipole approximation is usually employed to describe light-matter interactions under ordinary conditions. With the development of artificial atomic systems, 'giant atom' physics is possible, where the scale of atoms is comparable to or even greater than the wavelength of the light they interact with, and the dipole approximation is no longer valid. It reveals interesting physics impossible in small atoms and may offer useful applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the giant spin ensemble (GSE), where a ferromagnetic spin ensemble interacts twice with the meandering waveguide, and the coupling strength between them can be continuously tuned from finite (coupled) to zero (decoupled) by varying the frequency. In the nested configuration, we investigate the collective behavior of two GSEs and find extraordinary phenomena that cannot be observed in conventional systems. Our experiment offers a new platform for 'giant atom' physics.

Control of Electrons' Spin Eliminates Hydrogen Peroxide Formation During Water Splitting.

Project description:The production of hydrogen through water splitting in a photoelectrochemical cell suffers from an overpotential that limits the efficiencies. In addition, hydrogen-peroxide formation is identified as a competing process affecting the oxidative stability of photoelectrodes. We impose spin-selectivity by coating the anode with chiral organic semiconductors from helically aggregated dyes as sensitizers; Zn-porphyrins and triarylamines. Hydrogen peroxide formation is dramatically suppressed, while the overall current through the cell, correlating with the water splitting process, is enhanced. Evidence for a strong spin-selection in the chiral semiconductors is presented by magnetic conducting (mc-)AFM measurements, in which chiral and achiral Zn-porphyrins are compared. These findings contribute to our understanding of the underlying mechanism of spin selectivity in multiple electron-transfer reactions and pave the way toward better chiral dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells.

Resolving the role of femtosecond heated electrons in ultrafast spin dynamics.

Project description:Magnetization manipulation is essential for basic research and applications. A fundamental question is, how fast can the magnetization be reversed in nanoscale magnetic storage media. When subject to an ultrafast laser pulse, the speed of the magnetization dynamics depends on the nature of the energy transfer pathway. The order of the spin system can be effectively influenced through spin-flip processes mediated by hot electrons. It has been predicted that as electrons drive spins into the regime close to almost total demagnetization, characterized by a loss of ferromagnetic correlations near criticality, a second slower demagnetization process takes place after the initial fast drop of magnetization. By studying FePt, we unravel the fundamental role of the electronic structure. As the ferromagnet Fe becomes more noble in the FePt compound, the electronic structure is changed and the density of states around the Fermi level is reduced, thereby driving the spin correlations into the limit of critical fluctuations. We demonstrate the impact of the electrons and the ferromagnetic interactions, which allows a general insight into the mechanisms of spin dynamics when the ferromagnetic state is highly excited, and identifies possible recording speed limits in heat-assisted magnetization reversal.

Giant charge-to-spin conversion in ferromagnet via spin-orbit coupling.

Project description:Converting charge current into spin current via the spin Hall effect enables efficient manipulation of magnetization by electrical current. However, its geometrical restriction is a serious obstacle to device applications because it prevents switching of perpendicular magnetization in the absence of an external field. To resolve this issue, ferromagnetic materials have attracted attentions because their time reversal asymmetry induces magnetic-dependent charge-to-spin conversion that removes this restriction. Here, we achieved a large enhancement of magnetic-dependent charge-to-spin conversion by clarifying its mechanism. Through layer thickness dependence of the conversion efficiency, we revealed a coexistence of interfacial and bulk contributions to the magnetic-dependent charge-to-spin conversion. Moreover, the interfacial contribution to charge-to-spin conversion is found to be dominant and can be controlled via interfacial band engineering. The efficiency of charge-to-spin conversion in ferromagnet was found to be an order larger than that of other materials with reduced symmetry.
