Data on the estimation of thermomechanical damage for fired clay bricks.

ABSTRACT: Fired bricks are on high demand in building constructions because of their cheapness, appearance, robustness, isolation achievement and sustainability. To make fired bricks, Constructions and eco-friendly sector used clay materials. However, the major challenge in their utilization is their thermal and mechanical behavior after exposure. Problems occur mainly when permanently subjected to increased temperature which severely influence its durability, and in this case an overall failure mode calculation is essential. In this work a simple approach based on the Unified Strength Theory (UST) criterion was used to estimate the thermomechanical damage. Results of thermomechanical damage values are shown.

Sustainable Use of Marble Waste in Industrial Production of Fired Clay Bricks and Its Employment for Treatment of Flue Gases.

Project description:In the current study, waste marble powder was utilized to produce lightweight fired clay bricks and in the treatment of flue gases. Marble waste powder used in clay bricks and flue gas treatment was collected from local marble processing plants, and its chemical composition was analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray fluorescence. Clay bricks were produced in local fired clay brick kiln by partial replacement (10-40%) of clay with calcined and uncalcined waste marble powder. The temperature in the firing zone of the kiln was 1000-1100 °C. Clay brick properties such as compressive strength, bulk density, porosity, and water absorption were analyzed. Results show that the porosity of clay bricks increases with an increase in marble waste percentage, and due to an increase in porosity, water absorption of clay bricks also increases, while compressive strength and bulk density decrease. Clay bricks with 10% uncalcined marble waste and 20% calcined marble waste satisfy the required Turkish and European compressive strength standard. Marble waste decreases the concentration of sulfur dioxide and particulate matter in flue gases. There is up to 43 and 65% reduction in the concentration of sulfur dioxide and particulate matters, respectively, in flue gases, after treatment with marble waste. The addition of marble waste to clay bricks is an effective and economical solution for waste marble powder management. Furthermore, it can be used for the treatment of flue gases from brick kilns before its addition to clay bricks.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Decarbonization Potential of Global Fired Clay Brick Production.

Project description:Fired clay bricks (FCBs) are a dominant building material globally due to their low cost and simplicity of production, especially in low- and middle-income countries. With a projected rising housing demand, commensurate growth in brick demand is anticipated, the production of which could result in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Robust models are needed to estimate brick demand and emissions to systematically address decarbonization pathways. Few sources report production values; hence, we present two novel proxy models: (i) a consumption prediction model, relying on country-specific clay extraction data, dynamic building stock modeling, and average material intensity use allowing for projections to 2050; and (ii) a GHG emissions model, using literature-based data and production technology-specific inputs. Based on these models, the current global FCB consumption is estimated as 2.18 Gt annually, resulting in approximately 500 million tCO2e (1% of current global GHG emissions). If unaddressed, this fraction could increase to 3.5-5% in 2050 considering a moderate SSP 2-4.5 climate change mitigation scenario. Consequently, we explored three potential decarbonization pathways: (i) improving energy efficiency; (ii) shifting production to best practices; and (iii) replacing half of FCB demand with hollow concrete blocks, resulting in 27%, 49%, and 51% reduction in GHG emissions, respectively.

Straw in Clay Bricks and Plasters-Can We Use Its Molecular Decay for Dating Purposes?

Project description:Dating of clay bricks (adobe) and plasters is a relevant topic not only for building historians in the Pannonian region. Especially in vernacular architecture in this region, clay with straw amendments is a dominant construction material. The paper presents the potential of the molecular decay of these amendments to establish prediction tools for age based on infrared spectroscopic measurements. Preliminary results revealed spectral differences between the different plant parts, especially culms, nodes, and ear spindles. Based on these results, a first prediction model is presented including 14 historic samples. The coefficient of determination for the validation reached 62.2%, the (RMSE) root mean squared error amounted to 93 years. Taking the limited sample amount and the high material heterogeneity into account, this result can be seen as a promising output. Accordingly, sample size should be increased to a minimum of 100 objects and separate models for the different plant parts should be established.

Thermomechanical data of polyurethane shape memory polymer: Considering varying compositions.

Project description:This article presents data from the investigation of the thermal characteristics and mechanical behaviors of twelve different compositions of a polyurethane shape memory polymer (SMP). Each of the SMP compositions has a unique molar ratio of three monomers: (i) hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), (ii) N,N,N',N'-Tetrakis(2-Hydroxypropyl)ethylenediamine (HPED), and (iii) Triethanolamine (TEA). The thermal characteristic datasets for each composition include the glass transition temperatures, as obtained from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and the thermal degradation thresholds, as found from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical behaviors of the SMPs are represented by the failure stresses and strains, as obtained by cyclic tensile testing and failure testing, respectively. The interpretation of these measurements as well as a discussion of the potential usage of candidate SMP compositions for medical devices can be found in the companion article by Kunkel et al. (2018) [1], "Synthesis and characterization of bio-compatible shape memory polymers with potential applications to endovascular embolization of intracranial aneurysms."

Residual Mechanical Properties of Concrete Made with Crushed Clay Bricks and Roof Tiles Aggregate after Exposure to High Temperatures.

Project description:This paper presents the residual mechanical properties of concrete made with crushed bricks and clay roof tile aggregates after exposure to high temperatures. One referent mixture and eight mixtures with different percentages of replacement of natural aggregate by crushed bricks and roof tiles are experimentally tested. The properties of the concrete were measured before and after exposure to 200, 400, 600 and 800 °C. In order to evaluate the basic residual mechanical properties of concrete with crushed bricks and roof tiles after exposure to high temperatures, ultrasonic pulse velocity is used as a non-destructive test method and the results are compared with those of a destructive method for validation. The mixture with the highest percentage of replacement of natural aggregate by crushed brick and roof tile aggregate has the best physical, mechanical, and thermal properties for application of such concrete in precast concrete elements exposed to high temperatures.

Desert soil clay content estimation using reflectance spectroscopy preprocessed by fractional derivative.

Project description:Effective pretreatment of spectral reflectance is vital to model accuracy in soil parameter estimation. However, the classic integer derivative has some disadvantages, including spectral information loss and the introduction of high-frequency noise. In this paper, the fractional order derivative algorithm was applied to the pretreatment and partial least squares regression (PLSR) was used to assess the clay content of desert soils. Overall, 103 soil samples were collected from the Ebinur Lake basin in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region of China, and used as data sets for calibration and validation. Following laboratory measurements of spectral reflectance and clay content, the raw spectral reflectance and absorbance data were treated using the fractional derivative order from the 0.0 to the 2.0 order (order interval: 0.2). The ratio of performance to deviation (RPD), determinant coefficients of calibration ([Formula: see text]), root mean square errors of calibration (RMSEC), determinant coefficients of prediction ([Formula: see text]), and root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) were applied to assess the performance of predicting models. The results showed that models built on the fractional derivative order performed better than when using the classic integer derivative. Comparison of the predictive effects of 22 models for estimating clay content, calibrated by PLSR, showed that those models based on the fractional derivative 1.8 order of spectral reflectance ([Formula: see text] = 0.907, RMSEC = 0.425%, [Formula: see text] = 0.916, RMSEP = 0.364%, and RPD = 2.484 ≥ 2.000) and absorbance ([Formula: see text] = 0.888, RMSEC = 0.446%, [Formula: see text] = 0.918, RMSEP = 0.383% and RPD = 2.511 ≥ 2.000) were most effective. Furthermore, they performed well in quantitative estimations of the clay content of soils in the study area.

Data on drying kinetics of a semi-automated gas-fired fish dryer.

Project description:The dataset presented in this article represent the drying characteristics of a semi-automated gas-fired fish dryer. A cabinet dryer was constructed mainly from mild steel sheet metal and stainless steel, and was used for drying prepared fish samples of Clarias gariepinus species. Major operating parameters which included mass of fish, mass of Liquefied Petroleum Gas used, inside temperature of the dryer, and drying time were monitored. Also, output parameters such as the moisture content and energy utilization amongst others were observed and recorded at varying time intervals and specified drying temperatures. The drying temperature was sustained via an incorporated PID temperature controller that allowed drying to proceed until a relatively constant mass of the dried fish samples was attained. The information contained in this data article include a schematic drawing of drying kinetics analysis of the semi-automated gas-fired fish dryer and a pictorial view of the gas-fired cabinet dryer. Also included are pictorial representations of the washed and neatly folded degutted fish samples and dried fish samples. Data provided in this article are those relating to process parameters of the semi-automated fish dryer, data of output parameters of the fish dryer and comparisons of moisture content and energy utilization at different drying temperatures with time.

Effect of Thermomechanical Loading at Low Temperatures on Damage Development in Glass Fiber Epoxy Laminates.

Project description:Due to the high interest in the use of glass/epoxy laminates in aerospace applications, aviation, and as cryogenic tanks, it is crucial to understand the behavior of composites under challenging environmental conditions. Polymer composites are exposed to low temperatures, including cryogenic temperatures, which can lead to the initiation of microdamage. This paper investigates damage initiation/accumulation and its influence on the properties of cross-ply woven glass fiber epoxy composites at low temperatures compared to room temperature conditions. To evaluate the influence of a low-temperature environment on the mechanical performance of glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite (GFRP) laminates, three types of test campaigns were carried out: quasi-static tensile tests and stepwise increasing loading/unloading cyclic tensile tests at room temperature and in a low-temperature environment (-50 °C). We demonstrated that the initial stiffness of the laminates increased at low temperatures. On the other hand, there were no observed changes in the type or mechanism of developed damage in the two test conditions. However, the reduction in stiffness due to the accumulated damage was more significant for the laminates tested at low temperatures (~17% vs. ~11%). Exceptions were noted in a few formulations where the extent of damage at low temperatures was insignificant (<1%) compared to that at room temperature. Since some of the studied laminates exhibited a relatively minor decrease in stiffness (~2-3%), we can also conclude that the formulation of matrix material plays an important role in delaying the initiation and formation of damage.

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data for clay mineral mapping.

Project description:In order to identify potential zones for clay mineral (kaolinite) in Ranong province, Thailand, ten 2D ERT survey lines were deployed across potential site. The data were collected using the IRIS Syscal Pro Plus multi-electrode imaging system with internal switchbox and an array of 48 steel electrodes. The Dipole-Dipole configuration was utilized with electrode separations of 10 m. The Res2DInv software was used to process the data. Images for the resistivity survey are presented as 2D cross section of resistivity profile. The data were interpreted by comparing with geology of the area and based on the available lithological borehole information.

Data on physicochemical properties of natural clay and natural clay/multiwalled carbon nanotubes composite materials for various applications possibilities.

Project description:Natural materials can provide cost-effective way in the development of various products for specific applications. On the hand, physicochemical properties of composite materials can be enhanced to perform a specific process of interest such as wastewater treatment. Clay materials have been used for many applications including brick making and wastewater treatment. To enhance the properties of natural materials such as clay, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used to enhance the properties of natural clays. Natural clays and MWCNTs composites were characterized to provide insights as a starting point for various applications. There are two sets of data presented in this study: i) raw material, unheated and heated (at 900 °C); ii) natural clay, MWCNTs and natural clay/MWCNTs composites. The chemical composition and phase identification analyzes were carried out using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), respectively. A Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer was used to determine the functional groups of the samples. The UV-vis analyzes were carried out to investigate the reflectance percentage of the natural clays and the composites samples. The Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analyzes were performed to investigate the weight loss and dehydration process of the samples. The presented data showed that natural clays and natural clays/MWCNTs composites can be used for various applications such as construction industry, for cosmetic usages and for the removal of pollutants in aqueous solutions.
