Management equity incentives and stock price crash risk: "Golden handcuffs" or "gold watch".

ABSTRACT: This paper expands the previous research on management equity incentives (MEIs) and stock price crash risk by distinguishing between the "gold watch" region and the "golden handcuff" regions in MEIs. By using an estimation of the gold watch region and the golden handcuff regions based on 6,675 annual observations of China's A-share listed companies, the stock price crash risk is found to be negatively correlated with MEIs in the golden handcuff regions (0-10%, 30%-100%) and is positively correlated with MEIs in the gold watch region (10%-30%). A further investigation of the mediating effects of peer effects on MEIs and the stock price crash risk reveals that peer effects have a partial mediation effect at the level of peer managers' shareholding and mediate the relationship between MEIs and the stock price crash risk.

Stock price crash risk and military connected board: Evidence from Thailand.

Project description:Based on the agency and stakeholder theories, effective boards, acting as an internal governance mechanism, reduce agency costs. This paper asks whether military connected boards represent a good governance tool by exploring how military connected boards affect stock price crash risk. Using instrumental variable analysis, we document that firms with military connected boards have lower risk of stock price crashes. Our findings are unlikely to have endogeneity concerns and shed light on the role of military connected boards as an effective internal governance tool. Consistent with the conservatism hypothesis and stakeholder theory, by being transparent about firm-specific bad news, military connected boards could effectively monitor managers to ensure they act on all stakeholders' interests.

Impact of COVID-19 on stock price crash risk: Evidence from Chinese energy firms.

Project description:This paper studies the impact of the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the stock price crash risk of energy firms in China. We find that the stock price crash risk of energy firms significantly decreases in the post-COVID-19 period. We also find that firms that engage in more corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities are less exposed to stock price crash risk in the post-COVID-19 period than those that engage in less CSR activities. Finally, we show that the effect of COVID-19 on stock price crash risk is less severe for state-owned enterprises (SOEs) than for non-SOEs in the post-COVID-19 period. Our findings demonstrate China's economic recovery in the post-COVID-19 period and have policy implications for firms to improve their resilience to exogenous shocks.

The influence of lazy information disclosure on stock price crash risk: Empirical evidence from China.

Project description:Information disclosure is an important way for investors to obtain information, the annual report text carries a lot of information, lazy information disclosure is an important form of information disclosure of the annual report text. This paper takes China's A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2022 as the research sample, takes the annual report text information disclosure form as the entry point, uses the computer text analysis technology to measure the text similarity of the annual report to measure the lazy information disclosure, and explores its impact on stock price crash risk. The results show that there is a positive correlation between the similarity of annual report text and the risk of stock price crash, that is, when the information of annual report text is presented in the form of lazy information disclosure, the risk of stock price crash increases. For companies audited by key auditing institutions, the positive correlation between the similarity of their annual reports and the risk of stock price crash is not significant, indicating that key auditing institutions will weaken the positive correlation between lazy information disclosure and the risk of stock price crash. Further, through external attention and analysis of the time delay of annual report disclosure, it is concluded that the management lacks the opportunity and time to hide the bad news, so it is clear that the lazy information disclosure comes from the business situation "the fact is so". The research conclusion of this paper provides evidence support for the influence of lazy information disclosure on stock price crash risk, and also provides useful reference for regulators to improve information disclosure policies and effectively prevents and resolves stock price crash risk.

Effects of Price of Gold on Bombay Stock Exchange Sectoral Indices: New Evidence for Portfolio Risk Management.

Project description:Using daily data, this paper examines the relationship between the returns of gold and seven sectoral indices in the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) for the period from January 2000 to May 2018. Given the importance of gold in India, there are significant issues in a portfolio selection in that country. By addressing the hedged robust portfolio problems, this paper focuses on three vanilla portfolio problems: the maximum return portfolio allocation, the global minimum variance portfolio problem, and the Markowitz portfolio allocation by using various multiple generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models. The paper finds that gold returns are significantly independent of the returns of the BSE sectoral indices. Besides, gold returns can help predict the future returns of the Consumer Durables and the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods indices as well as the Oil & Gas equity indices. Finally, the findings also show that gold hedges against the information technology stock index and serves as a robust portfolio diversification tool. With these new results, this paper offers several implications for investors and risk management purposes.

Balance matters more: Research on the effect of corporate social responsibility equilibrium on stock price crash risk.

Project description:The impact of the degree and effectiveness corporate social responsibility (CSR) fulfillment on corporate value assessment by investors is significant. However, prior research on effects of CSR on stock price crash risk has showed contrasting results. Certain studies suggest that an abundance of CSR can become a self-serving tool for management. This may lead to concealing and accumulating negative information, resulting in stock price collapse. Based on principal-agent theory, we suggest that CSR equilibrium could be an effective approach to prevent the concealment of negative events by managers. Employing data from Chinese A-share listed companies spanning 2010 to 2020, we examine how CSR equilibrium and corporate governance levels influence the risk of stock price collapse across entities with different property rights. Empirical findings indicate that a balanced distribution of CSR can mitigate the risk of stock price collapse. Furthermore, we find that higher levels of corporate governance can mitigate the negative impact of CSR equilibrium on stock price collapse risk. Interestingly, this governance effect is more pronounced in state-owned enterprises compared to private enterprises, where the likelihood of hiding adverse information is higher. Additionally, it provides a theoretical explanation for the impact of CSR equilibrium on the risk of stock price collapse, based on the principal-agent problem, thereby expanding the applicability of the theory. Practically, the research findings carry significant implications for listed companies, CSR rating agencies, and investors.

Brand equity and the Covid-19 stock market crash: Evidence from U.S. listed firms.

Project description:Brand equity has played an important role in firms' stock performance, especially during the stock market crash provoked by Covid-19. Our manuscript investigates how brand equity impacts stock performance during the Covid-19 crash. Firms with top brands should be a particularly attractive "safe harbor" in the crash to investors since consumer loyalty and demand advantages brought by brand equity enable firms to retain stable cash flows and mitigate the macroeconomic shock. Based on U.S. listed firms, we find that firms with top brands experience higher stock returns, lower systematic risk and lower idiosyncratic risk in the Covid-19 crash than other firms. Moreover, our findings are used to distinguish the brand equity effect from the corporate social responsibility (CSR) effect on stock performance during the Covid-19 crash.

STOCK MARKET CRASH AND EXPECTATIONS OF AMERICAN HOUSEHOLDS.

Project description:This paper utilizes data on subjective probabilities to study the impact of the stock market crash of 2008 on households' expectations about the returns on the stock market index. We use data from the Health and Retirement Study that was fielded in February 2008 through February 2009. The effect of the crash is identified from the date of the interview, which is shown to be exogenous to previous stock market expectations. We estimate the effect of the crash on the population average of expected returns, the population average of the uncertainty about returns (subjective standard deviation), and the cross-sectional heterogeneity in expected returns (disagreement). We show estimates from simple reduced-form regressions on probability answers as well as from a more structural model that focuses on the parameters of interest and separates survey noise from relevant heterogeneity. We find a temporary increase in the population average of expectations and uncertainty right after the crash. The effect on cross-sectional heterogeneity is more significant and longer lasting, which implies substantial long-term increase in disagreement. The increase in disagreement is larger among the stockholders, the more informed, and those with higher cognitive capacity, and disagreement co-moves with trading volume and volatility in the market.

Stock price prediction using principal components.

Project description:The literature provides strong evidence that stock price values can be predicted from past price data. Principal component analysis (PCA) identifies a small number of principle components that explain most of the variation in a data set. This method is often used for dimensionality reduction and analysis of the data. In this paper, we develop a general method for stock price prediction using time-varying covariance information. To address the time-varying nature of financial time series, we assign exponential weights to the price data so that recent data points are weighted more heavily. Our proposed method involves a dimension-reduction operation constructed based on principle components. Projecting the noisy observation onto a principle subspace results in a well-conditioned problem. We illustrate our results based on historical daily price data for 150 companies from different market-capitalization categories. We compare the performance of our method to two other methods: Gauss-Bayes, which is numerically demanding, and moving average, a simple method often used by technical traders and researchers. We investigate the results based on mean squared error and directional change statistic of prediction, as measures of performance, and volatility of prediction as a measure of risk.

Linkages between share pledging, stock price risk and profitability: Evidence from the P.R. China.

Project description:Share pledging has become popular as a method of loan collateral among Chinese shareholders. Our research used a sample of Chinese listed firms between 2008-2018 and produced two main findings. Firstly, we found a negative association between stock price risk and firm profitability. Our second finding was that the interaction effect of share pledging and stock price risk is greater on firm profitability than the effect of stock price risk itself. We examined the role of share pledging by modeling pooled OLS and fixed effects using share pledging behavior, controlling shareholders' share pledging and the share pledging ratio to reinforce the robustness of our results. Furthermore, we investigated the Davis Double Play effect of share pledging to analyze how share pledging affects stock price risk. We found that higher EPS and investor expectations cannot mitigate the positive impact of share pledging on stock price risk. That is, the reduction of EPS and the deterioration of investor expectations caused by share pledging risk will not further aggravate the stock price risk, as shareholders may have taken some managerial actions to affect the transmission mechanism.
