The 17<sup>th</sup> century plague epidemic had a particularly strong demographic toll in Southern Europe, especially Italy, where it caused long-lasting economical damage. Whether this resulted from ineffective sanitation measures or more pathogenic <i>Yersinia pestis</i> strains remains unknown.
