Recovery and Reuse of Composite Cathode Binder in Lithium Ion Batteries.

ABSTRACT: Here, we investigate the recovery and reuse of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binders from both homemade and commercial cathode films in Li ion batteries. We find that PVDF solubility depends on whether the polymer is an isolated powder or cast into a composite film. A mixture of tetrahydrofuran:N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (THF : NMP, 50 : 50 v/v) at 90 °C delaminates composite cathodes from Al current collectors and yields pure PVDF as characterized by ¹ H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PVDF recovered from Li ion cells post-cycling exhibits similar performance to pristine PVDF. These data suggest that PVDF can be extracted and reused during Li ion battery recycling while simultaneously eliminating the formation of HF etchants, providing an incentive for use in direct cathode recycling.

Numerical Design of Microporous Carbon Binder Domains Phase in Composite Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Lithium-ion battery (LIB) performance can be significantly affected by the nature of the complex electrode microstructure. The carbon binder domain (CBD) present in almost all LIB electrodes is used to enhance mechanical stability and facilitate electronic conduction, and understanding the CBD phase microstructure and how it affects the complex coupled transport processes is crucial to LIB performance optimization. In this work, the influence of microporosity in the CBD phase has been studied in detail for the first time, enabling insight into the relationships between the CBD microstructure and the battery performance. To investigate the effect of the CBD pore size distributions, a random field method is used to generate in silico a multiple-phase electrode structure, including bimodal pore size distributions seen in practice and microporous CBD with a tunable pore size and variable transport properties. The distribution of macropores and the microporous CBD phase substantially affected simulated battery performance, where battery specific capacity improved as the microporosity of the CBD phase increased.

Optimization of Layered Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:This review presents a survey of the literature on recent progress in lithium-ion batteries, with the active sub-micron-sized particles of the positive electrode chosen in the family of lamellar compounds LiMO₂, where M stands for a mixture of Ni, Mn, Co elements, and in the family of yLi₂MnO₃•(1 - y)LiNi½Mn½O₂ layered-layered integrated materials. The structural, physical, and chemical properties of these cathode elements are reported and discussed as a function of all the synthesis parameters, which include the choice of the precursors and of the chelating agent, and as a function of the relative concentrations of the M cations and composition y. Their electrochemical properties are also reported and discussed to determine the optimum compositions in order to obtain the best electrochemical performance while maintaining the structural integrity of the electrode lattice during cycling.

Binder-free and high-loading sulfurized polyacrylonitrile cathode for lithium/sulfur batteries.

Project description:Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is a promising active material for Li/S batteries owing to its high sulfur utilization and long-term cyclability. However, because SPAN electrodes are synthesized using powder, they require large amounts of electrolyte, conducting agents, and binder, which reduces the practical energy density. Herein, to improve the practical energy density, we fabricated bulk-type SPAN disk cathodes from pressed sulfur and polyacrylonitrile powders using a simple heating process. The SPAN disks could be used directly as cathode materials because their π-π structures provide molecular-level electrical connectivity. In addition, the electrodes had interconnected pores, which improved the mobility of Li+ ions by allowing homogeneous adsorption of the electrolyte. The specific capacity of the optimal electrode was very high (517 mA h gelectrode -1). Furthermore, considering the weights of the anode, separator, cathode, and electrolyte, the Li/S cell exhibited a high practical energy density of 250 W h kg-1. The areal capacity was also high (8.5 mA h cm-2) owing to the high SPAN loading of 16.37 mg cm-2. After the introduction of 10 wt% multi-walled carbon nanotubes as a conducting agent, the SPAN disk electrode exhibited excellent cyclability while maintaining a high energy density. This strategy offers a potential candidate for Li/S batteries with high practical energy densities.

Direct Regenerating Cathode Materials from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Recycling cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is critical to a sustainable society as it will relief valuable but scarce recourse crises and reduce environment burdens simultaneously. Different from conventional hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recycling methods, direct regeneration relies on non-destructive cathode-to-cathode mode, and therefore, more time and energy-saving along with an increased economic return and reduced CO2 footprint. This review retrospects the history of direct regeneration and discusses state-of-the-art development. The reported methods, including high-temperature solid-state, hydrothermal/ionothermal, molten salt thermochemistry, and electrochemical method, are comparatively introduced, targeting at illustrating their underlying regeneration mechanism and applicability. Further, representative repairing and upcycling studies on wide-applied cathodes, including LiCoO2 (LCO), ternary oxides, LiFePO4 (LFP), and LiMn2 O4 (LMO), are presented, with an emphasis on milestone cases. Despite these achievements, there remain several critical issues that shall be addressed before the commercialization of the mentioned direct regeneration methods.

Binder-Free V2O5 Cathode for High Energy Density Rechargeable Aluminum-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Nowadays, research on electrochemical storage systems moves into the direction of post-lithium-ion batteries, such as aluminum-ion batteries, and the exploration of suitable materials for such batteries. Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) is one of the most promising host materials for the intercalation of multivalent ions. Here, we report on the fabrication of a binder-free and self-supporting V2O5 micrometer-thick paper-like electrode material and its use as the cathode for rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries. The electrical conductivity of the cathode was significantly improved by a novel in-situ and self-limiting copper migration approach into the V2O5 structure. This process takes advantage of the dissolution of Cu by the ionic liquid-based electrolyte, as well as the presence of two different accommodation sites in the nanostructured V2O5 available for aluminum-ions and the migrated Cu. Furthermore, the advanced nanostructured cathode delivered a specific discharge capacity of up to ~170 mAh g-1 and the reversible intercalation of Al3+ for more than 500 cycles with a high Coulomb efficiency reaching nearly 100%. The binder-free concept results in an energy density of 74 Wh kg-1, which shows improved energy density in comparison to the so far published V2O5-based cathodes. Our results provide valuable insights for the future design and development of novel binder-free and self-supporting electrodes for rechargeable multivalent metal-ion batteries associating a high energy density, cycling stability, safety and low cost.

Ternary Cathode Blend Electrodes for Environmentally Friendly Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:The combination of two active materials into one positive electrode of a lithium-ion battery is an uncomplicated and cost-effective way to combine the advantages of different active materials while reducing the disadvantages of each material. In this work, the concept of binary blends is extended to ternary compositions. The combination of three different active materials provides high versatility in designing the properties of an electrode. Therefore, the unique properties of a layered oxide, phospho-olivine, and spinel type material are mixed to design a high-energy cathode with improved environmental friendliness. Four different compositions of blend electrodes are investigated, each with individual benefits. Synergistic effects improved the rate capability, power density, thermal and chemical stability simultaneously. The blend electrode consisting of 75 % NMC, 12.5 % LMFP and LMO provides similar energy and power density as a pure NMC electrode while economizing 25 % cobalt and nickel.

Binder-free SnO2-TiO2 composite anode with high durability for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:A SnO2-TiO2 electrode was prepared via anodization and subsequent anodic potential shock for a binder-free anode for lithium-ion battery applications. Perpendicularly oriented TiO2 microcones are formed by anodization; SnO2, originating in a Na2SnO3 precursor, is then deposited in the valleys between the microcones and in their hollow cores by anodic potential shock. This sequence is confirmed by SEM and TEM analyses and EDS element mapping. The SnO2-TiO2 binder-free anode is evaluated for its C-rate performance and long-term cyclability in a half-cell measurement apparatus. The SnO2-TiO2 anode exhibits a higher specific capacity than the one with pristine TiO2 microcones and shows excellent capacity recovery during the rate capability test. The SnO2-TiO2 microcone structure shows no deterioration caused by the breakdown of electrode materials over 300 cycles. The charge/discharge capacity is at least double that of the TiO2 microcone material in a long-term cycling evaluation.

Facile One-Step Dynamic Hydrothermal Synthesis of Spinel LiMn2O4/Carbon Nanotubes Composite as Cathode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Nano-sized spinel LiMn2O4/carbon nanotubes (LMO/CNTs) composite is facilely synthesized via a one-step dynamic hydrothermal approach. The characterizations and electrochemical measurements reveal that LiMn2O4 particles with narrow size distribution are well dispersed with CNTs in the composite. The LMO/CNTs nanocomposite with 5 wt % CNTs displays a high specific discharge capacity of 114 mAh g-1 at 1C rate, and the retention rate after 180 cycles at room temperature reaches 94.5% in the potential window of 3.3 to 4.3 V vs. Li/Li+. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of the composite with 5 wt % CNTs at elevated temperature (55 °C) is also impressive, 90% discharging capacity could be maintained after 100 cycles at 1C. Such excellent electrochemical performance of the final product is attributed to the content of CNTs added in the hydrothermal process and small particle size inherited from pretreated MnO2 precursor.

Manipulating size of Li3V2(PO4)3 with reduced graphene oxide: towards high-performance composite cathode for lithium ion batteries.

Project description:Lithium vanadium phosphate (Li3V2(PO4)3, LVP)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite is prepared with a rheological method followed by heat treatment. The size and interface of LVP particles, two important merits for a cathode material, can be effectively tuned by the rGO in the composite, which plays as surfactant to assist sol-gelation and simultaneously as conductive carbon coating. As a consequence, the composite with 7.0 ± 0.4 wt.% rGO shows a capacity of 141.6 mAh g(-1) at 0.075 C, and a rate capacity of 119.0 mAh g(-1) at 15 C with respect to the mass of LVP/rGO composite, and an excellent cycling stability that retains 98.7% of the initial discharge capacity after 50 cycles. The improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the well-controlled rGO content that yields synergic effects between LVP and rGO. Not only do the rGO sheets reduce the size of LVP particles that favor the Li(+) ion migration and the electron transfer during charging and discharging, but also contribute to the reversible lithium ions storage.

Poly(Ethylene Glycol-block-2-Ethyl-2-Oxazoline) as Cathode Binder in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:Functional binders constitute a strategy to overcome several challenges that lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are facing due to soluble reaction intermediates in the positive electrode. Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) are in this context a previously well-explored binder mixture. Their ether and amide groups possess affinity to the dissolved sulfur species, which enhances the sulfur utilization and mitigates the parasitic redox shuttle. However, the immiscibility of PEO and PVP is a concern for electrode stability. Copolymers comprising ether and amide groups are thus promising candidates to improve the stability the system. Here, a series of poly (ethylene glycol-block-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) with various block lengths is synthesized and explored as binders in S/C composite electrodes in Li-S cells. While the electrochemical analyses show that although the sulfur utilization and capacity retention of the tested electrodes are similar, the integrity of the as-cast electrodes can play a key role for power capability.
