First record of the lace bug genus Eritingis (Drake and Ruhoff) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Tingidae) from Japan and Thailand.

Background

The lace bug genus Eritingis Drake and Ruhoff, 1962 is widely distributed in the Australian and Oriental Regions, whereas only a single species, E. recentis (Drake and Poor, 1937), has been recorded from the Oriental Region. To date, E. recentis is known to occur in Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Vietnam, but has not been recorded from Japan and Thailand.

Eritingis and E. recentis are recorded from Japan and Thailand for the first time.

Sequencing and Characterization of the Invasive Sycamore Lace Bug Corythucha ciliata (Hemiptera: Tingidae) Transcriptome.

Project description:The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata (Hemiptera: Tingidae), is an invasive forestry pest rapidly expanding in many countries. This pest poses a considerable threat to the urban forestry ecosystem, especially to Platanus spp. However, its molecular biology and biochemistry are poorly understood. This study reports the first C. ciliata transcriptome, encompassing three different life stages (Nymphs, adults female (AF) and adults male (AM)). In total, 26.53 GB of clean data and 60,879 unigenes were obtained from three RNA-seq libraries. These unigenes were annotated and classified by Nr (NCBI non-redundant protein sequences), Nt (NCBI non-redundant nucleotide sequences), Pfam (Protein family), KOG/COG (Clusters of Orthologous Groups of proteins), Swiss-Prot (A manually annotated and reviewed protein sequence database), and KO (KEGG Ortholog database). After all pairwise comparisons between these three different samples, a large number of differentially expressed genes were revealed. The dramatic differences in global gene expression profiles were found between distinct life stages (nymphs and AF, nymphs and AM) and sex difference (AF and AM), with some of the significantly differentially expressed genes (DEGs) being related to metamorphosis, digestion, immune and sex difference. The different express of unigenes were validated through quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR) for 16 randomly selected unigenes. In addition, 17,462 potential simple sequence repeat molecular markers were identified in these transcriptome resources. These comprehensive C. ciliata transcriptomic information can be utilized to promote the development of environmentally friendly methodologies to disrupt the processes of metamorphosis, digestion, immune and sex differences.

Identification of a sex pheromone of the chrysanthemum lace bug Corythucha marmorata (Hemiptera: Tingidae).

Project description:Although the nymphs of Corythucha marmorata form clusters on the undersides of host plant leaves, as frequently observed for Hemiptera, the adults are scattered in the vicinity of the nymph population. By investigating the biological activities of volatile secretions from the adult, we found that the secretions activated male mounting behaviour. A chemical analysis revealed that borneol was a common component of the secretions from both sexes. The absolute configuration of the natural product was the (+)-enantiomer of borneol and the optical isomer was undetectable. Although (+)-borneol showed significant sex pheromone activity against males, the antipode (-)-borneol also induced sex pheromone activity, albeit only slightly. Males may not have a strict identification mechanism based on stereochemistry. To verify the origin of this sex pheromone, we analysed the components of the essential oil of the leaves of Solidago canadensis L. (Compositae: Asteraceae), a host plant; bornyl acetate was detected to be a major component. The plant-produced bornyl acetate had different stereochemistry from the sex pheromone. The results suggested that the adults do not utilise the secondary metabolites of plants but biosynthesise this sex pheromone themselves. This is the first report on sex pheromone identification in Tingidae.

A new species and two new records of the moss-feeding lace bug genus Acalypta (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Tingidae) from Hokkaido, northern Japan, with an illustrated key to the Japanese species of the genus.

Project description:In this study, three species of the moss-feeding lace bug genus Acalypta Westwood, 1840 (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Tingidae, Tinginae, Acalyptaini) are reported mainly in Hokkaido, northern Japan. The first is Acalyptaalutacea sp. nov. that inhabits mosses growing on the floors of deciduous broad-leaved forests. The second is Acalyptacarinata (Panzer, 1806) that mainly inhabits mosses growing on marshlands and is recorded from Japan for the first time. The third is Acalyptasauteri Drake, 1942 that is widely distributed in three of the four main islands of Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu) and their surrounding islands, but is recorded from the remaining main island (Hokkaido) for the first time. The discovery of A.sauteri in Hokkaido also represents the northernmost record of this species. The following ten species of Acalypta are recognized in Japan: A.alutacea sp. nov., A.carinata, A.cooleyi Drake, 1917, A.gracilis (Fieber, 1844), A.hirashimai Takeya, 1962, A.marginata (Wolff, 1804), A.miyamotoi Takeya, 1962, A.pallidicoronata Souma, 2019, A.sauteri, and A.tsurugisana Tomokuni, 1972. An illustrated key for the identification of the ten species of this genus from Japan is also provided.

The King's Lace Bug Recaredus rex Distant, 1909 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Tingidae): Systematic Position, First Palaearctic and Afrotropical Records, and Ecological Niche Modelling.

Project description:The systematic position and actual distribution of Recaredus rex, for a long time one of the most enigmatic lace bug genus and species, is very obscure because only the type specimen and three other individuals from India are known to date. In the present paper, we report the first records of R. rex from the Palaearctic region (Iran) and tropical Africa (Ghana). Based on the occurrence localities and climatic variables, we predict potentially useful ecological niches for this species using Maxent software. The areas with the best environmental conditions for R. rex indicated in our studies suggest its possible Palaeotropical distribution. Moreover, we regard these results as a good starting point for further searches for specimens of this species. This might help verify the hypothesis of the broad Palaeotropical distribution of R. rex and its oligo- or polyphagy. In addition, the lace bug genus Recaredus, based on the diagnostic characteristics provided for the tribe Acalyptaini, and the structure of aedeagus, is transferred from the tribe Ypsotingini to the Acalyptaini. A key to all genera currently included in the latter tribe is also provided.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the tea lace bug, Stephanitis chinensis (Hemiptera: Tingidae).

Project description:The tea lace bug, Stephanitis chinensis Drake (Hemiptera: Tingidae), is a pest which feeds on the undersides of tea leaves by piercing the epidermis and sucking the sap, and causes great harm to plant growth and tea production. We have obtained the whole mitochondrial genome of S. chinensis (GenBank accession No. MF498769). The entire mt genome is 16,667 bp in size with an A + T content of 78.41%. The tea lace bug mt genome encodes all 37 genes that are typically found in animal mt genomes, consists of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA, and 22 transfer RNA genes. The gene order is consistent with other sequenced mt genome of lace bugs. The A + T-rich region of this genome is 2215 bp long with the A + T content of 82.58%, and located between the rrnS and trnI genes. Phylogenetic analysis performed using 13 PCGs with 14 heteropteran insects showed that S. chinensis clusters with other Tingidae species.

Attracting Chrysopidae With Plant Volatiles for Lace Bug (Hemiptera: Tingidae) Control in Rhododendrons and Azaleas.

Project description:The azalea lace bug (Stephanitis pyrioides Scott) (Hemiptera: Tingidae) is an invasive pest of rhododendrons and azaleas (Ericaceae: Rhododendron), which feeds on the underside of leaves causing chlorosis, reduced photosynthesis, and even plant death. While insecticides can control this pest, growers, landscape managers, and homeowners have requested softer alternatives. Augmentative release of predatory green lacewing Chrysoperla sp. (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) eggs and larvae has reduced S. pyrioides, but large-scale implementation may not be practical nor cost-effective. Attracting naturally occurring Chrysopidae with plant volatiles may be an economical and convenient option. In this study, we tested whether volatile blends 1) attracted Chrysoperla sp., and 2) controlled S. pyrioides populations on Rhododendron spp. in farm or urban landscapes. Experimental plots contained different multicomponent lures placed aboveground next to infested plants. Adult Chrysoperla sp., other natural enemies, and S. pyrioides from egg to adult stages were monitored in both farm and urban landscapes for two summers. Overall, two out of three volatile blends consistently attracted Chrysoperla sp. to sticky traps near baited plants. Methyl salicylate + acetic acid + 2-phenylethanol (methyl salicylate blend) and acetophenone + acetic acid + 2-phenylethanol (acetophenone blend) captured more adult Chrysoperla sp. than control traps in farm landscapes. However, only the acetophenone blend was associated with a slight reduction of S. pyrioides. Additional research is needed to determine whether the phenology of the first generation of both species are synchronized for effective season biological control in the Pacific Northwest.

Variability of 18rDNA loci in four lace bug species (Hemiptera, Tingidae) with the same chromosome number.

Project description:Male karyotypes of Elasmotropis testacea (Herrich-Schaeffer, 1835), Tingis cardui (Linnaeus, 1758), Tingis crispata (Herrich-Schaeffer, 1838), and Agramma femorale Thomson, 1871 (Heteroptera, Cimicomorpha, Tingidae) were analyzed using conventional chromosome staining and FISH with 18S rDNA and (TTAGG) n telomeric probes. The FISH technique was applied for the first time in the Tingidae. In spite of the fact that all species showed the same chromosome number (2n = 12 + XY), they have significant differences in the number and position of rDNA loci. FISH with the classical insect (TTAGG) n probe produced no signals on chromosomes suggesting telomeres in lace bugs to be of some other molecular composition. Tingidae share absence of the (TTAGG) n telomeric sequence with all so far studied taxa of the advanced true bug infraorders Cimicomorpha and Pentatomomorpha.

Revision of the plant bug genus tytthus (hemiptera, heteroptera, miridae, phylinae).

Project description:The phyline plant bug genus Tytthus Fieber, previously containing 19 species, is revised. Isoproba Osborn and Drake, 1915, incorrectly placed in the subfamily Bryocorinae, tribe Dicyphini, is synonymized as a junior synonym of Tytthus Fieber, syn. n.; the only included species, Isoproba picea Osborn and Drake is transferred to Tytthus, comb. n., as the senior synonym of Tytthus hondurensis Carvalho, syn. n.; and Tytthus koreanus Josifov and Kerzhner, 1972 is synonymized with Tytthus chinensis (Stål 1860), syn. n.; and a lectotype for Tytthus parviceps is designated. The six new species Tytthus femoralis from Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, and Peru,Tytthus fuscicornis from New Mexico (USA), Tytthus mexicanus from Mexico, Tytthus pallidus from Brazil and Panama, Tytthus uniformis from Arizona and New Mexico (USA), and Tytthus wheeleri from the eastern United States are described, bringing the total number of species for the genus to 24. A color adult habitus illustration of Tytthus wheeleri, color photographs for each species (except Tytthus juturnaiba Carvalho and Wallerstein), illustrations of male genitalia, scanning electron photomicrographs of selected structures of certain species, and an identification key are provided to facilitate species recognition. A phylogenetic analysis is offered to help infer relationships.

Identification of Entomopathogenic Fungi as Naturally Occurring Enemies of the Invasive Oak Lace Bug, Corythucha arcuata (Say) (Hemiptera: Tingidae).

Project description:The oak lace bug (OLB), Corythucha arcuata (Hemiptera: Tingidae), was first identified as an invasive pest in Europe in northern Italy in 2000 and since then it has spread rapidly, attacking large forested areas in European countries. The OLB is a cell sap-sucking insect that is native to North America, with Quercus spp. as its main host. Its rapid expansion, successful establishment in invaded countries, and observations of more damage to hosts compared to native areas are most likely due to a lack of natural enemies, pathogens and competitors. In its native area, various natural enemies of OLBs have been identified; however, little is known about the occurrence and impact of OLB pathogens. None of the pathogenic fungi found on OLBs in natural conditions have been identified until now. In this study, we provide evidence of four entomopathogenic fungi that are naturally occurring on invasive OLBs found in infested pedunculate oak forests in eastern Croatia. On the basis of their morphology and multilocus molecular phylogeny, the fungi were identified as Beauveria pseudobassiana, Lecanicillium pissodis, Akanthomyces attenuatus and Samsoniella alboaurantium. The sequences generated for this study are available from GenBank under the accession numbers MT004817-MT004820, MT004833-MT004835, MT027501-MT27510, and MT001936-MT0011943. These pathogenic species could facilitate biological control strategies against OLBs.
