Magic Doping and Robust Superconductivity in Monolayer FeSe on Titanates.

ABSTRACT: The enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on titanates opens a fascinating pathway toward the rational design of high-temperature superconductors. Utilizing the state-of-the-art oxide plus chalcogenide molecular beam epitaxy systems in situ connected to a synchrotron angle-resolved photoemission spectroscope, epitaxial LaTiO₃ layers with varied atomic thicknesses are inserted between monolayer FeSe and SrTiO₃, for systematic modulation of interfacial chemical potential. With the dramatic increase of electron accumulation at the LaTiO₃/SrTiO₃ surface, providing a substantial surge of work function mismatch across the FeSe/oxide interface, the charge transfer and the superconducting gap in the monolayer FeSe are found to remain markedly robust. This unexpected finding indicate the existence of an intrinsically anchored "magic" doping within the monolayer FeSe systems.

Dichotomy of superconductivity between monolayer FeS and FeSe.

Project description:The discovery of high-temperature (T c) superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 raised a fundamental question: Whether high T c is commonly realized in monolayer iron-based superconductors. Tetragonal FeS is a key material to resolve this issue because bulk FeS is a superconductor with T c comparable to that of isostructural FeSe. However, difficulty in synthesizing tetragonal monolayer FeS due to its metastable nature has hindered further investigations. Here we report elucidation of band structure of monolayer FeS on SrTiO3, enabled by a unique combination of in situ topotactic reaction and molecular-beam epitaxy. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on FeS and FeSe revealed marked similarities in the electronic structure, such as heavy electron doping and interfacial electron-phonon coupling, both of which have been regarded as possible sources of high T c in FeSe. However, surprisingly, high-T c superconductivity is absent in monolayer FeS. This is linked to the weak superconducting pairing in electron-doped multilayer FeS in which the interfacial effects are absent. Our results strongly suggest that the cross-interface electron-phonon coupling enhances T c only when it cooperates with the pairing interaction inherent to the superconducting layer. This finding provides a key insight to explore heterointerface high-T c superconductors.

Significantly enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) via metallic δ-doping.

Project description:Superconductivity transition temperature (Tc) marks the inception of a macroscopic quantum phase-coherent paired state in fermionic systems. For 2D superconductivity, the paired electrons condense into a coherent superfluid state at Tc, which is usually lower than the pairing temperature, between which intrinsic physics including Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and pseudogap state are hotly debated. In the case of monolayer FeSe superconducting films on SrTiO3(001), although the pairing temperature (Tp) is revealed to be 65-83 K by using spectroscopy characterization, the measured zero-resistance temperature ([Formula: see text]) is limited to 20 K. Here, we report significantly enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe films by δ-doping of Eu or Al on SrTiO3(001) surface, in which [Formula: see text] is enhanced by 12 K with a narrowed transition width ΔTc ∼ 8 K, compared with non-doped samples. Using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements, we demonstrate lowered work function of the δ-doped SrTiO3(001) surface and enlarged superconducting gaps in the monolayer FeSe with improved morphology/electronic homogeneity. Our work provides a practical route to enhance 2D superconductivity by using interface engineering.

Picoscale structural insight into superconductivity of monolayer FeSe/SrTiO3.

Project description:Remarkable enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (T c) has been observed for monolayer (ML) FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 substrates. The atomic-scale structure of the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface is an important determinant of both the magnetic and interfacial electron-phonon interactions and is a key ingredient to understanding its high-T c superconductivity. We resolve the atomic-scale structure of the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface through a complementary analysis of scanning transmission electron microscopy and in situ surface x-ray diffraction. We find that the interface is more strongly bonded for a particular registration, which leads to a coherently strained ML. We also determine structural parameters, such as the distance between ML FeSe and the oxide, Se─Fe─Se bond angles, layer-resolved distances between Fe─Se, and registry of the FeSe lattice relative to the oxide. This picoscale structure determination provides an explicit structural framework and constraint for theoretical approaches addressing the high-T c mechanism in FeSe/SrTiO3.

Enhanced superconductivity accompanying a Lifshitz transition in electron-doped FeSe monolayer.

Project description:The origin of enhanced superconductivity over 50 K in the recently discovered FeSe monolayer films grown on SrTiO3 (STO), as compared to 8 K in bulk FeSe, is intensely debated. As with the ferrochalcogenides AxFe2-ySe2 and potassium-doped FeSe, which also have a relatively high-superconducting critical temperature (Tc), the Fermi surface (FS) of the FeSe/STO monolayer films is free of hole-like FS, suggesting that a Lifshitz transition by which these hole FSs vanish may help increasing Tc. However, the fundamental reasons explaining this increase of Tc remain unclear. Here we report a 15 K jump of Tc accompanying a second Lifshitz transition characterized by the emergence of an electron pocket at the Brillouin zone centre, which is triggered by high-electron doping following in situ deposition of potassium on FeSe/STO monolayer films. Our results suggest that the pairing interactions are orbital dependent in generating enhanced superconductivity in FeSe.

Antiferromagnetic FeSe monolayer on SrTiO3: the charge doping and electric field effects.

Project description:By growing monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3(001) surface, researchers obtain the highest superconducting transition-temperature for iron-based superconductor. Here, we study the antiferromagnetic (AFM) checkerboard monolayer FeSe adsorbed on SrTiO3(001) surface. We show that the system has a considerable charge transfer from SrTiO3(001) substrate to FeSe monolayer, and so has a self-constructed electric field. The FeSe monolayer band structure near the Brillouin zone (BZ) center is sensitive to charge doping, and the spin-resolved energy bands at BZ corner are distorted to be flattened by the perpendicular electric field. It is revealed that the striking disappearance of the Fermi surface around the BZ center can be well explained by the AFM checkerboard phase with charge doping and electric field effects. We propose a tight-binding model Hamiltonian to take these key factors into account. We also show that this composite structure is an ideal electron-hole bilayer system, with electrons and holes respectively formed in FeSe monolayer and TiO2 surface layer.

High temperature superconductivity at FeSe/LaFeO3 interface.

Project description:Enormous enhancement of superconducting pairing temperature (Tg) to 65 K in FeSe/SrTiO3 has made it a spotlight. Despite the effort of interfacial engineering, FeSe interfaced with TiOx remains the unique case in hosting high Tg, hindering a decisive understanding on the general mechanism and ways to further improving Tg. Here we constructed a new high-Tg interface, single-layer FeSe interfaced with FeOx-terminated LaFeO3. Large superconducting gap and diamagnetic response evidence that the superconducting pairing can emerge near 80 K, highest amongst all-known interfacial superconductors. Combining various techniques, we reveal interfacial charge transfer and strong interfacial electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in FeSe/LaFeO3, showing that the cooperative pairing mechanism works beyond FeSe-TiOx. Intriguingly, the stronger interfacial EPC than that in FeSe/SrTiO3 is likely induced by the stronger interfacial bonding in FeSe/LaFeO3, and can explain the higher Tg according to recent theoretical calculations, pointing out a workable route in designing new interfaces to achieve higher Tg.

Emergence of double-dome superconductivity in ammoniated metal-doped FeSe.

Project description:The pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and unit cell metrics of tetragonal (NH3)yCs0.4FeSe were investigated in high pressures up to 41 GPa. The Tc decreases with increasing pressure up to 13 GPa, which can be clearly correlated with the pressure dependence of c (or FeSe layer spacing). The Tc vs. c plot is compared with those of various (NH3)yMxFeSe (M: metal atoms) materials exhibiting different Tc and c, showing that the Tc is universally related to c. This behaviour means that a decrease in two-dimensionality lowers the Tc. No superconductivity was observed down to 4.3 K in (NH3)yCs0.4FeSe at 11 and 13 GPa. Surprisingly, superconductivity re-appeared rapidly above 13 GPa, with the Tc reaching 49 K at 21 GPa. The appearance of a new superconducting phase is not accompanied by a structural transition, as evidenced by pressure-dependent XRD. Furthermore, Tc slowly decreased with increasing pressure above 21 GPa, and at 41 GPa superconductivity disappeared entirely at temperatures above 4.9 K. The observation of a double-dome superconducting phase may provide a hint for pursuing the superconducting coupling-mechanism of ammoniated/non-ammoniated metal-doped FeSe.

Evolution of spin excitations from bulk to monolayer FeSe.

Project description:In ultrathin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO3 (FeSe/STO), the superconducting transition temperature Tc is increased by almost an order of magnitude, raising questions on the pairing mechanism. As in other superconductors, antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations have been proposed to mediate SC making it essential to study the evolution of the spin dynamics of FeSe from the bulk to the ultrathin limit. Here, we investigate the spin excitations in bulk and monolayer FeSe/STO using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations. Despite the absence of long-range magnetic order, bulk FeSe displays dispersive magnetic excitations reminiscent of other Fe-pnictides. Conversely, the spin excitations in FeSe/STO are gapped, dispersionless, and significantly hardened relative to its bulk counterpart. By comparing our RIXS results with simulations of a bilayer Hubbard model, we connect the evolution of the spin excitations to the Fermiology of the two systems revealing a remarkable reconfiguration of spin excitations in FeSe/STO, essential to understand the role of spin fluctuations in the pairing mechanism.

Superconductivity at 44 K in K intercalated FeSe system with excess Fe.

Project description:We report here that a new superconducting phase with much higher Tc has been found in K intercalated FeSe compound with excess Fe. We successfully grew crystals by precisely controlling the starting amount of Fe. Besides the superconducting (SC) transition at ~30 K, we observed a sharp drop in resistivity and a kink in susceptibility at 44 K. By combining thermodynamic measurements with electron spin resonance (ESR), we demonstrate that this is a new SC transition. Structural analysis unambiguously reveals two phases coexisting in the crystals, which are responsible respectively for the SC transitions at 30 and 44 K. The structural experiments and first-principles calculations consistently indicate that the 44 K SC phase is close to a 122 structure, but with an unexpectedly large c-axis of 18.10 Å. We further find a novel monotonic dependence of the maximum Tc on the separation of neighbouring FeSe layers.

Pressure-induced high-temperature superconductivity retained without pressure in FeSe single crystals.

Project description:To raise the superconducting-transition temperature (Tc) has been the driving force for the long-sustained effort in superconductivity research. Recent progress in hydrides with Tcs up to 287 K under pressure of 267 GPa has heralded a new era of room temperature superconductivity (RTS) with immense technological promise. Indeed, RTS will lift the temperature barrier for the ubiquitous application of superconductivity. Unfortunately, formidable pressure is required to attain such high Tcs. The most effective relief to this impasse is to remove the pressure needed while retaining the pressure-induced Tc without pressure. Here, we show such a possibility in the pure and doped high-temperature superconductor (HTS) FeSe by retaining, at ambient pressure via pressure quenching (PQ), its Tc up to 37 K (quadrupling that of a pristine FeSe at ambient) and other pressure-induced phases. We have also observed that some phases remain stable without pressure at up to 300 K and for at least 7 d. The observations are in qualitative agreement with our ab initio simulations using the solid-state nudged elastic band (SSNEB) method. We strongly believe that the PQ technique developed here can be adapted to the RTS hydrides and other materials of value with minimal effort.
