Fermi blockade of the strong electron-phonon interaction in modelled optimally doped high temperature superconductors.

ABSTRACT: We study how manifestations of strong electron-phonon interaction depend on the carrier concentration by solving the two-dimensional Holstein model for the spin-polarized fermions using an approximation free bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo method. We show that the strong electron-phonon interaction, obviously present at very small Fermion concentration, is masked by the Fermi blockade effects and Migdal's theorem to the extent that it manifests itself as moderate one at large carriers densities. Suppression of strong electron-phonon interaction fingerprints is in agreement with experimental observations in doped high temperature superconductors.

Fermi arcs vs. Fermi pockets in electron-doped perovskite iridates.

Project description:We report on an angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) study of bulk electron-doped perovskite iridate, (Sr(1-x)La(x))3Ir2O7. Fermi surface pockets are observed with a total electron count in keeping with that expected from La substitution. Depending on the energy and polarization of the incident photons, these pockets show up in the form of disconnected "Fermi arcs", reminiscent of those reported recently in surface electron-doped Sr2IrO4. Our observed spectral variation is consistent with the coexistence of an electronic supermodulation with structural distortion in the system.

Phonon dispersions and Fermi surfaces nesting explaining the variety of charge ordering in titanium-oxypnictides superconductors.

Project description:There has been a puzzle between experiments and theoretical predictions on the charge ordering of layered titanium-oxypnictides superconductors. Unconventional mechanisms to explain this discrepancy have been argued so far, even affecting the understanding of superconductivity on the compound. We provide a new theoretical prediction, by which the discrepancy itself is resolved without any complicated unconventional explanation. Phonon dispersions and changes of nesting vectors in Fermi surfaces are clarified to lead to the variety of superlattice structures even for the common crystal structures when without CDW, including orthorhombic 2 × 2 × 1 one for BaTi2As2O, which has not yet been explained successfully so far, being different from tetragonal for BaTi2Sb2O and BaTi2Bi2O. The electronic structure analysis can naturally explain experimental observations about CDW including most latest ones without any cramped unconventional mechanisms.

A large modulation of electron-phonon coupling and an emergent superconducting dome in doped strong ferroelectrics.

Project description:We use first-principles methods to study doped strong ferroelectrics (taking BaTiO3 as a prototype). Here, we find a strong coupling between itinerant electrons and soft polar phonons in doped BaTiO3, contrary to Anderson/Blount's weakly coupled electron mechanism for "ferroelectric-like metals". As a consequence, across a polar-to-centrosymmetric phase transition in doped BaTiO3, the total electron-phonon coupling is increased to about 0.6 around the critical concentration, which is sufficient to induce phonon-mediated superconductivity of about 2 K. Lowering the crystal symmetry of doped BaTiO3 by imposing epitaxial strain can further increase the superconducting temperature via a sizable coupling between itinerant electrons and acoustic phonons. Our work demonstrates a viable approach to modulating electron-phonon coupling and inducing phonon-mediated superconductivity in doped strong ferroelectrics and potentially in polar metals. Our results also show that the weakly coupled electron mechanism for "ferroelectric-like metals" is not necessarily present in doped strong ferroelectrics.

Spin blockade and phonon bottleneck for hot electron relaxation observed in n-doped colloidal quantum dots.

Project description:Understanding and manipulating hot electron dynamics in semiconductors may enable disruptive energy conversion schemes. Hot electrons in bulk semiconductors usually relax via electron-phonon scattering on a sub-picosecond timescale. Quantum-confined semiconductors such as quantum dots offer a unique platform to prolong hot electron lifetime through their size-tunable electronic structures. Here, we study hot electron relaxation in electron-doped (n-doped) colloidal CdSe quantum dots. For lightly-doped dots we observe a slow 1Pe hot electron relaxation (~10 picosecond) resulting from a Pauli spin blockade of the preoccupying 1Se electron. For heavily-doped dots, a large number of electrons residing in the surface states introduce picosecond Auger recombination which annihilates the valance band hole, allowing us to observe 300-picosecond-long hot electrons as a manifestation of a phonon bottleneck effect. This brings the hot electron energy loss rate to a level of sub-meV per picosecond from a usual level of 1 eV per picosecond. These results offer exciting opportunities of hot electron harvesting by exploiting carrier-carrier, carrier-phonon and spin-spin interactions in doped quantum dots.

Local antiferromagnetic exchange and collaborative Fermi surface as key ingredients of high temperature superconductors.

Project description:Cuprates, ferropnictides and ferrochalcogenides are three classes of unconventional high temperature superconductors, who share similar phase diagrams in which superconductivity develops after a magnetic order is suppressed, suggesting a strong interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, although the exact picture of this interplay remains elusive. Here we show that there is a direct bridge connecting antiferromagnetic exchange interactions determined in the parent compounds of these materials to the superconducting gap functions observed in the corresponding superconducting materials: in all high temperature superconductors, the Fermi surface topology matches the form factor of the pairing symmetry favored by local magnetic exchange interactions. We suggest that this match offers a principle guide to search for new high temperature superconductors.

Ubiquitous coexisting electron-mode couplings in high-temperature cuprate superconductors.

Project description:In conventional superconductors, electron-phonon coupling plays a dominant role in generating superconductivity. In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, the existence of electron coupling with phonons and other boson modes and its role in producing high-temperature superconductivity remain unclear. The evidence of electron-boson coupling mainly comes from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) observations of [Formula: see text]70-meV nodal dispersion kink and [Formula: see text]40-meV antinodal kink. However, the reported results are sporadic and the nature of the involved bosons is still under debate. Here we report findings of ubiquitous two coexisting electron-mode couplings in cuprate superconductors. By taking ultrahigh-resolution laser-based ARPES measurements, we found that the electrons are coupled simultaneously with two sharp modes at [Formula: see text]70meV and [Formula: see text]40meV in different superconductors with different dopings, over the entire momentum space and at different temperatures above and below the superconducting transition temperature. These observations favor phonons as the origin of the modes coupled with electrons and the observed electron-mode couplings are unusual because the associated energy scales do not exhibit an obvious energy shift across the superconducting transition. We further find that the well-known "peak-dip-hump" structure, which has long been considered a hallmark of superconductivity, is also omnipresent and consists of "peak-double dip-double hump" finer structures that originate from electron coupling with two sharp modes. These results provide a unified picture for the [Formula: see text]70-meV and [Formula: see text]40-meV energy scales and their evolutions with momentum, doping and temperature. They provide key information to understand the origin of these energy scales and their role in generating anomalous normal state and high-temperature superconductivity.

Charge Effects and Electron Phonon Coupling in Potassium-Doped Graphene.

Project description:Herewith, we propose a comprehensive study of the vibrational response of chemical doping of free-standing graphene (Gr). Complementary insights on the increased metallicity have been demonstrated by the emerging plasmon excitation in the upper Dirac cone, observed by inelastic electron scattering and core-level photoemission. The electron migration in the π* upper Dirac band unveils an electron-phonon coupling of contaminant-free K-doped Gr, as evidenced by advanced micro-Raman spectroscopy in ultrahigh vacuum ambient. The vibrational response of potassium-doped Gr correlated with the charge injected in the upper Dirac cone, and the Fermi level shift unravel a notable electron-phonon coupling, which is stronger than that observed for gate voltage-doped Gr.

Fermi surface reconstruction in electron-doped cuprates without antiferromagnetic long-range order.

Project description:Fermi surface (FS) topology is a fundamental property of metals and superconductors. In electron-doped cuprate Nd2-x Ce x CuO4 (NCCO), an unexpected FS reconstruction has been observed in optimal- and overdoped regime (x = 0.15-0.17) by quantum oscillation measurements (QOM). This is all the more puzzling because neutron scattering suggests that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-range order, which is believed to reconstruct the FS, vanishes before x = 0.14. To reconcile the conflict, a widely discussed external magnetic-field-induced AFM long-range order in QOM explains the FS reconstruction as an extrinsic property. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) evidence of FS reconstruction in optimal- and overdoped NCCO. The observed FSs are in quantitative agreement with QOM, suggesting an intrinsic FS reconstruction without field. This reconstructed FS, despite its importance as a basis to understand electron-doped cuprates, cannot be explained under the traditional scheme. Furthermore, the energy gap of the reconstruction decreases rapidly near x = 0.17 like an order parameter, echoing the quantum critical doping in transport. The totality of the data points to a mysterious order between x = 0.14 and 0.17, whose appearance favors the FS reconstruction and disappearance defines the quantum critical doping. A recent topological proposal provides an ansatz for its origin.

Strong correlation between electronic bonding network and critical temperature in hydrogen-based superconductors.

Project description:By analyzing structural and electronic properties of more than a hundred predicted hydrogen-based superconductors, we determine that the capacity of creating an electronic bonding network between localized units is key to enhance the critical temperature in hydrogen-based superconductors. We define a magnitude named as the networking value, which correlates with the predicted critical temperature better than any other descriptor analyzed thus far. By classifying the studied compounds according to their bonding nature, we observe that such correlation is bonding-type independent, showing a broad scope and generality. Furthermore, combining the networking value with the hydrogen fraction in the system and the hydrogen contribution to the density of states at the Fermi level, we can predict the critical temperature of hydrogen-based compounds with an accuracy of about 60 K. Such correlation is useful to screen new superconducting compounds and offers a deeper understating of the chemical and physical properties of hydrogen-based superconductors, while setting clear paths for chemically engineering their critical temperatures.

Strong Electron-Phonon Coupling Mediates Carrier Transport in BiFeO<sub>3</sub>.

Project description:The electron-phonon interaction is known as one of the major mechanisms determining electrical and thermal properties. In particular, it alters the carrier transport behaviors and sets fundamental limits to carrier mobility. Establishing how electrons interact with phonons and the resulting impact on the carrier transport property is significant for the development of high-efficiency electronic devices. Here, carrier transport behavior mediated by the electron-phonon coupling in BiFeO3 epitaxial thin films is directly observed. Acoustic phonons are generated by the inverse piezoelectric effect and coupled with photocarriers. Via the electron-phonon coupling, doughnut shape carrier distribution has been observed due to the coupling between hot carriers and phonons. The hot carrier quasi-ballistic transport length can reach 340 nm within 1 ps. The results suggest an effective approach to investigating the effects of electron-phonon interactions with temporal and spatial resolutions, which is of great importance for designing and improving electronic devices.
