Indoor and outdoor environmental data: A dataset with acoustic data acquired by the microphone embedded on mobile devices.

ABSTRACT: All mobile devices include a microphone that can be used for acoustic data acquisition. This article presents a dataset of acoustic signals related to nine environments, captured with a microphone embedded on off-the-shelf mobile devices. The mobile phone can be placed in the pants pockets, in a wristband, over the bedside table, on a table, or on other furniture. Data collection environments are bar, classroom, gym, kitchen, library, street, hall, living room, and bedroom. The data was collected by 25 individuals (15 men and 10 women) in different environments around Covilhã and Fundão municipalities (Portugal). The microphone data was sampled with 44,100 Hz into an array with 16-bit unsigned integer values in the range [0, 255] with a 128 offset for zero. The dataset presented in this paper presents at least 2000 samples of 5 s of data for each environment, corresponding to around 2.8 h for each environment into text files. In total, it includes at least 25.2 h of acoustic data for the implementation of data processing techniques, e.g., Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and other machine learning methods for the different analysis.

Project description:A Mobile Monitoring System (MMS) has been designed taking into account the use of technology with high sensor accuracy and the ability to be installed easily and quickly in different cardinal locations, distribution spaces, volumes and at different heights of a tertiary in-use building located in Leioa (Bilbao). Two types of MMS have been designed with the objective of carrying out two types of analysis; one intended to do a global indoor air temperature uncertainty analysis and the other focused on doing a global outdoor air temperature uncertainty analysis. Eight tripods make up the interior MMS with twenty sensors at different heights, which have been installed in different offices in the building to collect indoor air temperature measurements at different heights and locations. In addition, eight sensors make up the exterior MMS to collect data from outdoor air temperature measurements around the building envelope. Both MMS have been integrated into the existing Building Automation System (BAS) of the tertiary building; some other data collected by the BAS has also been taken into account for the uncertainty analysis of indoor and outdoor air temperature. The interior and exterior MMS datasets have been compiled based on a rigorous data collection process, with the potential to use the data to study the spatial air temperature behavior, taking into account the impact of solar radiation, the heating system and the electrical energy consumption. Furthermore, it enables the global uncertainty of indoor and outdoor air temperature measurements on an in-use building to be estimated and to break it down into the different uncertainty sources, such as the sensor accuracy, vertical and horizontal temperature variability, solar radiation, occupancy and heating system effects. Finally, it enables the optimization of monitoring and control systems for BAS, heating and HVAC systems, as well as any monitoring system implemented in research tests using indoor and/or outdoor temperature measurements as key variables.

Project description:Environmental psychologists have established multiple psychological benefits of interaction with natural, compared to urban, environments on emotion, cognition, and attention. Yet, given the increasing urbanisation worldwide, it is equally important to understand how differences within different urban environments influence human psychological experience. We developed a laboratory experiment to examine the psychophysiological effects of the physical (outdoor or indoor) and social (crowded versus uncrowded) environment in healthy young adults, and to validate the use of mobile electroencephalography (EEG) and electrodermal activity (EDA) measurements during active walking. Participants (N = 42) were randomly assigned into a walking or a standing group, and watched six 1-min walk-through videos of green, urban indoor and urban outdoor environments, depicting high or low levels of social density. Self-reported emotional states show that green spaces is perceived as more calm and positive, and reduce attentional demands. Further, the outdoor urban space is perceived more positively than the indoor environment. These findings are consistent with earlier studies on the psychological benefits of nature and confirm the effectiveness of our paradigm and stimuli. In addition, we hypothesised that even short-term exposure to crowded scenes would have negative psychological effects. We found that crowded scenes evoked higher self-reported arousal, more negative self-reported valence, and recruited more cognitive and attentional resources. However, in walking participants, they evoked higher frontal alpha asymmetry, suggesting more positive affective responses. Furthermore, we found that using recent signal-processing methods, the EEG data produced a comparable signal-to-noise ratio between walking and standing, and that despite differences between walking and standing, skin-conductance also captured effectively psychophysiological responses to stimuli. These results suggest that emotional responses to visually presented stimuli can be measured effectively using mobile EEG and EDA in ambulatory settings, and that there is complex interaction between active walking, the social density of urban spaces, and direct and indirect affective responses to such environments.
