Colossal topological Hall effect at the transition between isolated and lattice-phase interfacial skyrmions.

ABSTRACT: The topological Hall effect is used extensively to study chiral spin textures in various materials. However, the factors controlling its magnitude in technologically-relevant thin films remain uncertain. Using variable-temperature magnetotransport and real-space magnetic imaging in a series of Ir/Fe/Co/Pt heterostructures, here we report that the chiral spin fluctuations at the phase boundary between isolated skyrmions and a disordered skyrmion lattice result in a power-law enhancement of the topological Hall resistivity by up to three orders of magnitude. Our work reveals the dominant role of skyrmion stability and configuration in determining the magnitude of the topological Hall effect.

Skyrmion Lattice Topological Hall Effect near Room Temperature.

Project description:Magnetic skyrmions are stable nanosized spin structures that can be displaced at low electrical current densities. Because of these properties, they have been proposed as building blocks of future electronic devices with unprecedentedly high information density and low energy consumption. The electrical detection of an ordered skyrmion lattice via the Topological Hall Effect (THE) in a bulk crystal, has so far been demonstrated only at cryogenic temperatures in the MnSi family of compounds. Here, we report the observation of a skyrmion lattice Topological Hall Effect near room temperature (276 K) in a mesoscopic lamella carved from a bulk crystal of FeGe. This region coincides with the skyrmion lattice location revealed by neutron scattering. We provide clear evidence of a re-entrant helicoid magnetic phase adjacent to the skyrmion phase, and discuss the large THE amplitude (5 nΩ.cm) in view of the ordinary Hall Effect.

Giant Topological Hall Effect and Colossal Magnetoresistance in Heusler Ferromagnet near Room Temperature.

Project description:Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) is an exotic phenomenon that allows for the efficient magnetic control of electrical resistivity and has attracted significant attention in condensed matter due to its potential for memory and spintronic applications. Heusler alloys are the subject of considerable interest in this context due to the electronic properties that result from the nontrivial band topology. Here, the observation of CMR near room temperature is reported in the shape memory Heusler alloy Ni2Mn1.4In0.6, which is attributed to the combined effects of magnetic field-induced martensite twin variant reorientation (MFIR) and magnetic field-induced structural phase transformation (MFIPT). This compound undergoes a structural phase transition from a cubic (austenite-L21) ferromagnetic (FM) to a monoclinic (martensite) antiferromagnetic (AFM), which leads to an effective increase in the size of the Fermi surface and consequently in CMR. Additionally, it exhibits significant anomalous Hall conductivity in both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. Furthermore, it demonstrates a giant topological Hall resistivity (THR) ρyxT$\rho _{{\mathrm{yx}}}^{\mathrm{T}}$ ≈6 µΩ.cm in the vicinity of martensite transition due to the enhanced spin chirality resulting from the formation of magnetic domains with Bloch-type domain walls. The findings contribute to the understanding of the magnetotransport of Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys, which are prospective candidates for room-temperature spintronic applications.

Stabilization and adiabatic control of antiferromagnetically coupled skyrmions without the topological Hall effect.

Project description:Synthetic antiferromagnetically coupled (SAF) multilayers provide different physics of stabilizing skyrmions while eliminating the topological Hall effect (THE), enabling efficient and stable control. The effects of material parameters, external current drive, and a magnetic field on the skyrmion equilibrium and propagation characteristics are largely unresolved. Here, we present a computational and theoretical demonstration of the large window of material parameters that stabilize SAF skyrmions determined by saturation magnetization, uniaxial anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Current-driven SAF skyrmion velocities reach ∼200 m s-1 without the THE. The SAF velocities are about 3-10 times greater than the typical ferromagnetic skyrmion velocities. The current densities needed for driving SAF skyrmions could be reduced to 108 A m-2, while 1011 A m-2 or above is needed for ferromagnetic skyrmions. By reducing the SAF skyrmion drive current by 3 orders, Joule heating is reduced by 6 orders of magnitude. These results pave the way for new SAF interfaces with improved equilibrium, dynamics, and power savings in THE-free skyrmionics.

Current-driven dynamics of skyrmions stabilized in MnSi nanowires revealed by topological Hall effect.

Project description:Skyrmions hold promise for next-generation magnetic storage as their nanoscale dimensions may enable high information storage density and their low threshold for current-driven motion may enable ultra-low energy consumption. Skyrmion-hosting nanowires not only serve as a natural platform for magnetic racetrack memory devices but also stabilize skyrmions. Here we use the topological Hall effect (THE) to study phase stability and current-driven dynamics of skyrmions in MnSi nanowires. THE is observed in an extended magnetic field-temperature window (15-30 K), suggesting stabilization of skyrmions in nanowires compared with the bulk. Furthermore, we show in nanowires that under the high current density of 10(8)-10(9) A m(-2), the THE decreases with increasing current densities, which demonstrates the current-driven motion of skyrmions generating the emergent electric field in the extended skyrmion phase region. These results open up the exploration of skyrmions in nanowires for fundamental physics and magnetic storage technologies.

Emulating spin transport with nonlinear optics, from high-order skyrmions to the topological Hall effect.

Project description:Exploring material magnetization led to countless fundamental discoveries and applications, culminating in the field of spintronics. Recently, research effort in this field focused on magnetic skyrmions - topologically robust chiral magnetization textures, capable of storing information and routing spin currents via the topological Hall effect. In this article, we propose an optical system emulating any 2D spin transport phenomena with unprecedented controllability, by employing three-wave mixing in 3D nonlinear photonic crystals. Precise photonic crystal engineering, as well as active all-optical control, enable the realization of effective magnetization textures beyond the limits of thermodynamic stability in current materials. As a proof-of-concept, we theoretically design skyrmionic nonlinear photonic crystals with arbitrary topologies and propose an optical system exhibiting the topological Hall effect. Our work paves the way towards quantum spintronics simulations and novel optoelectronic applications inspired by spintronics, for both classical and quantum optical information processing.

Topological Phase and Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Ferromagnetic Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides Monolayer 1T-VSe2.

Project description:Magnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials have attracted tremendous attention because of their high potential in spintronics. In particular, the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in magnetic 2D layers shows a very promising prospect for hosting Majorana zero modes at the topologically protected edge states in proximity to superconductors. However, the QAH effect has not yet been experimentally realized in monolayer systems to date. In this work, we study the electronic structures and topological properties of the 2D ferromagnetic transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMD) monolayer 1T-VSe2 by first-principles calculations with the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) functional. We find that the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) opens a continuous band gap at the magnetic Weyl-like crossing point hosting the quantum anomalous Hall effect with Chern number C=2. Moreover, we demonstrate the topologically protected edge states and intrinsic (spin) Hall conductivity in this magnetic 2D TMD system. Our results indicate that 1T-VSe2 monolayer serves as a stoichiometric quantum anomalous Hall material.

Universal skyrmion logic gates and circuits based on antiferromagnetically coupled skyrmions without a topological Hall effect.

Project description:Nanoscale skyrmions are spin-based quasiparticles that are promising for nonvolatile logic applications. However, the presence of the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE) in ferromagnetic skyrmions limits their performance in logic devices. Here, we present a detailed micromagnetic modeling study on low-energy skyrmion logic gate circuits based on skyrmions in synthetic antiferromagnetically coupled (SAF) metallic ferromagnetic layers to eliminate the SkHE while reducing current requirements. First, we demonstrate the functionalities of the SAF skyrmion logic inverter gate and other Boolean gates such as NOR, OR, AND, and NAND using the inverter gate block and show the improved performance over their ferromagnetic skyrmion gate counterparts. We analyzed the operation and energy consumption at different stages of the SAF skyrmion logic operation and found that the SAF gates can operate at lower current densities. We designed a multiplexer circuit as a test case and obtained a fast response and low Joule heating. The skyrmion motion through the gates is shown to be stable and efficient in different regions, and cascading the gates creates longer linear motion without the unwanted transverse SkHE. Overall, the results indicate the feasibility of antiferromagnetically coupled skyrmions for low-energy logic with improved performance over ferromagnetic skyrmionics.

Magnetic bilayer-skyrmions without skyrmion Hall effect.

Project description:Magnetic skyrmions might be used as information carriers in future advanced memories, logic gates and computing devices. However, there exists an obstacle known as the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE), that is, the skyrmion trajectories bend away from the driving current direction due to the Magnus force. Consequently, the skyrmions in constricted geometries may be destroyed by touching the sample edges. Here we theoretically propose that the SkHE can be suppressed in the antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled bilayer system, since the Magnus forces in the top and bottom layers are exactly cancelled. We show that such a pair of SkHE-free magnetic skyrmions can be nucleated and be driven by the current-induced torque. Our proposal provides a promising means to move magnetic skyrmions in a perfectly straight trajectory in ultra-dense devices with ultra-fast processing speed.

Nucleation and annihilation of skyrmions in Mn<sub>2</sub>CoAl observed through the topological Hall effect.

Project description:Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin textures with great technological potential. These topologically non-trivial non-coplanar spin textures give rise to a topological Hall effect, enabling the purely electronic detection of magnetic skyrmions. We report a clear topological Hall effect in thin films of the the Heusler alloy Mn2CoAl, a ferromagnetic spin-gapless semiconductor, capped by a thin layer of Pd. We exploit the strong thickness- and temperature-dependence of the anomalous Hall effect in this system, tuning it to zero to enable the unambiguous measurement of the topological Hall effect, which is observed for temperatures between 3 K and 280 K. The topological Hall effect is evidence of skyrmions, and we demonstrate the simultaneous coexistence of opposite polarity skyrmions using a novel method involving minor field loops of the Hall effect.

Topological phase transition and quantum spin Hall edge states of antimony few layers.

Project description:While two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators (TI's) initiated the field of topological materials, only very few materials were discovered to date and the direct access to their quantum spin Hall edge states has been challenging due to material issues. Here, we introduce a new 2D TI material, Sb few layer films. Electronic structures of ultrathin Sb islands grown on Bi2Te2Se are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. The maps of local density of states clearly identify robust edge electronic states over the thickness of three bilayers in clear contrast to thinner islands. This indicates that topological edge states emerge through a 2D topological phase transition predicted between three and four bilayer films in recent theory. The non-trivial phase transition and edge states are confirmed for epitaxial films by extensive density-functional-theory calculations. This work provides an important material platform to exploit microscopic aspects of the quantum spin Hall phase and its quantum phase transition.
