Sonochemical processes for the degradation of antibiotics in aqueous solutions: A review.

ABSTRACT: Antibiotic residues in water are general health and environmental risks due to the antibiotic-resistance phenomenon. Sonication has been included among the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) used to remove recalcitrant contaminants in aquatic environments. Sonochemical processes have shown substantial advantages, including cleanliness, safety, energy savings and either negligible or no secondary pollution. This review provides a wide overview of the different protocols and degradation mechanisms for antibiotics that either use sonication alone or in hybrid processes, such as sonication with catalysts, Fenton and Fenton-like processes, photolysis, ozonation, etc.

Photo-assisted electrochemical advanced oxidation processes for the disinfection of aqueous solutions: A review.

Project description:Disinfection is usually the final step in water treatment and its effectiveness is of paramount importance in ensuring public health. Chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and ozone (O3) are currently the most common methods for water disinfection; however, the generation of toxic by-products and the non-remnant effect of UV and O3 still constitute major drawbacks. Photo-assisted electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) on the other hand, appear as a potentially effective option for water disinfection. In these processes, the synergism between electrochemically produced active species and photo-generated radicals, improve their performance when compared with the corresponding separate processes and with other physical or chemical approaches. In photo-assisted EAOPs the inactivation of pathogens takes place by means of mechanisms that occur at different distances from the anode, that is: (i) directly at the electrode's surface (direct oxidation), (ii) at the anode's vicinity by means of electrochemically generated hydroxyl radical species (quasi-direct), (iii) or at the bulk solution (away from the electrode surface) by photo-electrogenerated active species (indirect oxidation). This review addresses state of the art reports concerning the inactivation of pathogens in water by means of photo-assisted EAOPs such as photo-electrocatalytic process, photo-assisted electrochemical oxidation, photo-electrocoagulation and cathodic processes. By focusing on the oxidation mechanism, it was found that while quasi-direct oxidation is the preponderant inactivation mechanism, the photo-electrocatalytic process using semiconductor materials is the most studied method as revealed by numerous reports in the literature. Advantages, disadvantages, trends and perspectives for water disinfection in photo-assisted EAOPs are also analyzed in this work.

Construction of Co-Modified MXene/PES Catalytic Membrane for Effective Separation and Degradation of Tetracycline Antibiotics in Aqueous Solutions.

Project description:The application of antibiotics has advanced modern medicine significantly. However, the abuse and discharge of antibiotics have led to substantial antibiotic residues in water, posing great harm to natural organisms and humans. To address the problem of antibiotic degradation, this study developed a novel catalytic membrane by depositing Co catalysts onto MXene nanosheets and fabricating the polyethersulfone composite (Co@MXene/PES) using vacuum-assisted self-assembly. The dual role of MXene as both a carrier for Co atoms and an enhancer of interlayer spacing led to improved flux and catalytic degradation capabilities of the membrane. Experimental results confirmed that the Co@MXene/PES membrane effectively degraded antibiotics through peroxymonosulfate activation, achieving up to 95.51% degradation at a cobalt concentration of 0.01 mg/mL. The membrane demonstrated excellent antibacterial properties, minimal flux loss after repeated use, and robust anti-fouling performance, making it a promising solution for efficient antibiotic removal and stable water treatment.

Degradation of Carbamazepine from Aqueous Solutions via TiO2-Assisted Photo Catalyze.

Project description:Photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) from spiked aqueous solutions, via a UV/TiO2 system, was investigated, and the optimum photocatalyst type (P25 Degussa) and dose (500 mg/L), as well as irradiation time (45 min), were established. The degradation process kinetics was studied, and a degradation rate constant of 3.14 × 10-5 M min-1 was calculated for CBZ, using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation. Experiments performed in the presence of scavengers showed that the main reactive species involved in the degradation process are holes and free hydroxyl radicals; superoxide radicals also play a role in CBZ degradation. Eight transformation products of CBZ were identified, and a possible degradation pathway, consisting of four routes, was proposed. Toxicity and genotoxicity tests were also performed for both untreated and treated CBZ solutions, proving that the use of a UV/TiO2 system represents a suitable treatment approach for aqueous systems with CBZ content.

Thermophysical Behavior of Carbonated Aqueous Solutions Containing Monoethanolamine and Degradation Products.

Project description:The impact of the degradation of monoethanolamine (MEA) on the physicochemical properties of the solvent is experimentally characterized. Based on the identification of three main degradation products of MEA: oxazolidine-2-one (OZD), N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine (HEEDA), and 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-imidazolidinone (HEIA), new measurements for the density, surface tension, and viscosity of partially carbonated solutions containing water, MEA and those products were conducted at different MEA/degradation product molar ratios. The experiments covered a temperature range from 298.15 to 353.15 K at atmospheric pressure. The more stable and impactful degradation product, HEIA, was analyzed separately to determine its vapor pressure, as well as the density and viscosity of aqueous solutions with HEIA mass fractions of 100, 75, 50, and 25% in the same temperature range. The reported data demonstrate the difference in the performance of aqueous MEA solutions containing degradation products as compared to a fresh solution. This aspect is crucial for understanding the impact and effectiveness of postcombustion CO2 capture using aqueous amine systems in an industrial setting.

Sonochemical synthesis of SnS and SnS<sub>2</sub> quantum dots from aqueous solutions, and their photo- and sonocatalytic activity.

Project description:Our study reports the ultrasound-assisted synthesis of SnS and SnS2 in the form of nanoparticles using aqueous solutions of respective tin chloride and thioacetamide varying sonication time. The presence of both compounds is confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, as well as Raman and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. The existence of nanoparticles is proven by powder X-ray diffraction investigation and by high resolution transmission electron microscopy observations. The size of nanocrystallites are in the range of 3-8 nm and 30 50 nm for SnS, and 1.5-10 nm for SnS2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, used to investigate the chemical state of tin and sulphur atoms on the surface of nanoparticles, reveal that they are typically covered with tin on the same oxidation degree as respective bulk compound. Values of optical bandgaps of synthesized nanoparticles, according to the Tauc method, were 2.31, 1.47 and 1.05 eV for SnS (60, 90 and 120 min long synthesis, respectively), and 2.81, 2.78 and 2.70 eV for SnS2 (60, 90 and 120 min long synthesis, respectively). Obtained nanoparticles were utilized as photo- and sonocatalysts in the process of degradation of model azo-dye molecules by UV-C light or ultrasound. Quantum dots of SnS2 obtained under sonication lasting 120 min were the best photocatalyst (66.9 % color removal), while quantum dots of SnS obtained under similar sonication time were the best sonocatalyst (85.2 % color removal).

Adsorption of Antibiotics on Graphene and Biochar in Aqueous Solutions Induced by π-π Interactions.

Project description:The use of carbon based materials on the removal of antibiotics with high concentrations has been well studied, however the effect of this removal method is not clear on the actual concentration of environments, such as the hospital wastewater, sewage treatment plants and aquaculture wastewater. In this study, experimental studies on the adsorption of 7 antibiotics in environmental concentration of aqueous solutions by carbon based materials have been observed. Three kinds of carbon materials have shown very fast adsorption to antibiotics by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) detection, and the highest removal efficiency of antibiotics could reach to 100% within the range of detection limit. Surprisedly, the adsorption rate of graphene with small specific surface area was stronger than other two biochar, and adsorption rate of the two biochar which have approximate specific surface and different carbonization degree, was significantly different. The key point to the present observation were the π-π interactions between aromatic rings on adsorbed substance and carbon based materials by confocal laser scanning microscope observation. Moreover, adsorption energy markedly increased with increasing number of the π rings by using the density functional theory (DFT), showing the particular importance of π-π interactions in the adsorption process.

Microbial Degradation of Plastic in Aqueous Solutions Demonstrated by CO2 Evolution and Quantification.

Project description:The environmental accumulation of plastics worldwide is a consequence of the durability of the material. Alternative polymers, marketed as biodegradable, present a potential solution to mitigate their ecological damage. However, understanding of biodegradability has been hindered by a lack of reproducible testing methods. We developed a novel method to evaluate the biodegradability of plastic samples based on the monitoring of bacterial respiration in aqueous media via the quantification of CO2 produced, where the only carbon source available is from the polymer. Rhodococcus rhodochrous and Alcanivorax borkumensis were used as model organisms for soil and marine systems, respectively. Our results demonstrate that this approach is reproducible and can be used with a variety of plastics, allowing comparison of the relative biodegradability of the different materials. In the case of low-density polyethylene, the study demonstrated a clear correlation between the molecular weight of the sample and CO2 released, taken as a measure of biodegradability.

Dissolution of Mesoporous Silica Supports in Aqueous Solutions: Implications for Mesoporous Silica-based Water Treatment Processes.

Project description:Under pH 7 - 10 conditions, the mesoporous silica supports proposed for use in water treatment are relatively unstable. In batch experiments conducted in pH 7 solutions, the commonly used support SBA-15 dissolved quickly, releasing approximately 30 mg/L of dissolved silica after 2 hours. In column experiments, more than 45% of an initial mass of 0.25 g SBA-15 dissolved within 2 days when a pH 8.5 solution flowed through the column. In a mixed iron oxide/SBA-15 system, the dissolution of SBA-15 changed the iron oxide reactivity toward H(2)O(2) decomposition, because dissolved silica deposited on iron oxide surface and changed its catalytic active sites. As with SBA-15, other mesoporous silica materials including HMS, MCM-41, four types of functionalized SBA-15, and two types of metal oxide-containing SBA-15 also dissolved under circumneutral pH solutions. The dissolution of mesoporous silica materials raises questions about their use under neutral and alkaline pH in aqueous solutions, because silica dissolution might compromise the behavior of the material.

Use of 'soluble lipids' for biochemical processes: linoleic acid-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes in aqueous solutions.

Project description:The equilibria of linoleic acid (LA)-cyclodextrin (CD) complexes were studied to investigate the behaviour of 'soluble lipids' in solution as a function of factors that typically affect biochemical processes, such as pH, temperature and CD structure. The above complexes are formed with a stoicheiometry of 1:2 in solution. The first CD molecule interacts with LA through hydrogen bonds when the pH is below the fatty acid pK; hydrophobic interactions may also play an important role at high pH. The second CD molecule makes only hydrophobic contact with the LA hydrocarbon chain. The formation of hydrogen bonds is dependent on the inner diameter of the CD whereas the strength of the hydrophobic interactions between CD and LA can be related to the presence of hydrophobic groups in the CD. The first CD molecule interacts more strongly with LA at increased temperatures. The quantitative description of the LA-CD interaction allows absolute control of the effects produced by the lipid on biochemical processes.
