Using Room Temperature Phosphorescence of Gold(I) Complexes for PAHs Sensing.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of two new phosphane-gold(I)-napthalimide complexes has been performed and characterized. The compounds present luminescent properties with denoted room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) induced by the proximity of the gold(I) heavy atom that favors intersystem crossing and triplet state population. The emissive properties of the compounds together with the planarity of their chromophore were used to investigate their potential as hosts in the molecular recognition of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were chosen to evaluate how the size and electronic properties can affect the host:guest interactions. Stronger affinity has been detected through emission titrations for the PAHs with extended aromaticity (anthracene and pyrene) and the results have been supported by DFT calculation studies.

Room-Temperature Multiple Phosphorescence from Functionalized Corannulenes: Temperature Sensing and Afterglow Organic Light-Emitting Diode.

Project description:Corannulene-derived materials have been extensively explored in energy storage and solar cells, however, are rarely documented as emitters in light-emitting sensors and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), due to low exciton utilization. Here, we report a family of multi-donor and acceptor (multi-D-A) motifs, TCzPhCor, TDMACPhCor, and TPXZPhCor, using corannulene as the acceptor and carbazole (Cz), 9,10-dihydro-9,10-dimethylacridine (DMAC), and phenoxazine (PXZ) as the donor, respectively. By decorating corannulene with different donors, multiple phosphorescence is realized. Theoretical and photophysical investigations reveal that TCzPhCor shows room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from the lowest-lying T1 ; however, for TDMACPhCor, dual RTP originating from a higher-lying T1 (T1 H ) and a lower-lying T1 (T1 L ) can be observed, while for TPXZPhCor, T1 H -dominated RTP occurs resulting from a stabilized high-energy T1 geometry. Benefiting from the high-temperature sensitivity of TPXZPhCor, high color-resolution temperature sensing is achieved. Besides, due to degenerate S1 and T1 H states of TPXZPhCor, the first corannulene-based solution-processed afterglow OLEDs is investigated. The afterglow OLED with TPXZPhCor shows a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax ) and a luminance (Lmax ) of 3.3 % and 5167 cd m-2 , respectively, which is one of the most efficient afterglow RTP OLEDs reported to date.

Aggregation-Enhanced Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Au(I) Complexes Bearing Mesogenic Biphenylethynyl Ligands.

Project description:Gold(I) complexes, enabling to form linear coordination geometry, are promising materials for manifesting both aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior due to strong intermolecular Au-Au (aurophilic) interactions and liquid crystalline (LC) nature depending on molecular geometry. In this study, we synthesized several gold(I) complexes with rod-like molecular skeletons where we employed a mesogenic biphenylethynyl ligand and an isocyanide ligand with flexible alkoxyl or alkyl chains. The AIE behavior and LC nature were investigated experimentally and computationally. All synthesized gold(I) complexes exhibited AIE properties and, in crystal, room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with a relatively high quantum yields of greater than 23% even in air. We have demonstrated that such strong RTP are drastically changed depending on the crystal-size and/or crystal growth process that changes quality of crystals as well as the aggregate structure, of e.g., Au-Au distance. Moreover, the complex with longer flexible chains showed LC nature where RTP can be observed. We expect these rod-like gold(I) complexes to have great potential in AIE-active LC phosphorescent applications such as linearly/circularly polarizing phosphorescence materials.

To easily modify their phosphorescence properties, we prepared phosphorescence-emitting aqueous solutions of polysaccharide-benzophenone and polysaccharide-4,4'-difluorobenzophenone complexes, which exhibit excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability.

Photoactivated room temperature phosphorescence from lignin.

Project description:Sustainable photoactivated room temperature phosphorescent materials exhibit great potential but are difficult to obtain. Here, we develop photoactivated room temperature phosphorescent materials by covalently attaching lignin to polylactic acid, where lignin and polylactic acid are the chromophore and matrix, respectively. Initially the phosphorescence of the lignin is quenched by residual O2. However, the phosphorescence is switched on when the residual oxygen is consumed by the triplet excitons of lignin under continuous UV light irradiation. As such, the lifetime increases from 3.0 ms to 221.1 ms after 20 s of UV activation. Interestingly, the phosphorescence is quenched again after being kept under an atmosphere of air for 2 h in the absence of UV irradiation due to the diffusion of oxygen into the materials. Using these properties, as-developed material is successfully used as a smart anti-counterfeiting logo for a medicine bottle and for information recording.

Modulating Room-Temperature Phosphorescence-To-Phosphorescence Mechanochromism by Halogen Exchange.

Project description:Modulating the stimulus-responsiveness of a luminescent crystal is challenging owing to the complex interdependent nature of its controlling factors, such as molecular structure, molecular conformation, crystal packing, optical properties, and amorphization behavior. Herein, we demonstrate a halogen-exchange approach that disentangles this problem, thereby realizing the modulation of room-temperature phosphorescence-to-phosphorescence mechanochromism. Replacing the bromine atoms in a brominated thienyl diketone with chlorine atoms afforded isostructural crystals; i.e., molecules with different halogen atoms exhibited the same molecular conformation and crystal packing. Consequently, amorphization behavior toward mechanical stimulation was also the same, and the phosphorescence of amorphous states originated from the same conformer of each diketone. In contrast, the phosphorescence properties of each conformer were modulated differently, which is ascribable to heavy atom effects, resulting in the modulation of the mechanochromism. Thus, halogen exchange is a promising approach for modulating the stimulus-responsive photofunctions of crystals involving spin-forbidden processes.

Room Temperature Phosphorescence Emission From Multi-States.

Project description:Organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have received considerable attention due to their fascinating photophysical properties. During the past decade, various organic luminogens exhibiting RTP emission in solid states were reported. However, the phosphorescence emission of organic compounds can hardly be observed in their solutions at room temperature. Herein, we reported two fluorene derivatives that can emit RTP in degassed organic solvents, polymer doped film, and crystalline states. Furthermore, those RTP luminogens emitted different colors with different phosphorescence lifetimes in multi-states. These results indicated that the phosphorescence performance can be adjusted flexibly in different condensed states. To our knowledge, this is the first example possessing diverse organic RTP at multi-states, including solution state.

Observation of crystallisation dynamics by crystal-structure-sensitive room-temperature phosphorescence from Au(I) complexes.

Project description:The aggregation behaviour of Au(I) complexes in condensed phases can affect their emission properties. Herein, aggregation-induced room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is observed from the crystals of trinuclear Au(I) complexes. The RTP is highly sensitive to the crystal structure, with a slight difference in the alkyl side chains causing not only a change in the crystal structure but also a shift in the RTP maximum. Furthermore, in nanocrystals, reversible RTP colour changes are induced by phase transitions between crystal polymorphs during crystal growth from solution or the pulverisation of bulk crystals. The colour change mechanism is discussed in terms of intermolecular interactions in the crystal structure of the luminescent aggregates. The results suggest that the behaviour in nanocrystals may differ from that in bulk crystals. These insights will advance the fundamental understanding of crystallisation mechanisms and may aid in the discovery of new materials properties for solids with nano- to micrometre sizes.

Responsive circularly polarized ultralong room temperature phosphorescence materials with easy-to-scale and chiral-sensing performance.

Project description:Circularly polarized room temperature phosphorescence materials represent a state-of-the-art frontier of optical materials and exhibit promising applications in various fields. Herein, we fabricate a series of full-color circularly polarized room temperature phosphorescence materials, based on anionic cellulose derivatives and achiral luminophores. The ionic achiral substituents promote the spontaneous formation of chiral helical structure of cellulose derivatives via the electrostatic repulsion effect. There are multiple interactions between anionic cellulose derivatives and the doped luminophores, thus the chirality is transferred to luminophores and the non-radiative transition is inhibited. The resultant materials can be easily processed into large-scale film and flexible 3D objects with repeatable folding and curling properties. In addition, their phosphorescence performance shows to be excitation-dependence, time-dependence, visible-light excitation, and multi-responsiveness to humidity, temperature as well as pH value. Importantly, they recognize many enantiomers in an instrument-free visual mode, including amino acids, hydroxyl acids, organic phosphate and hydrobenzoin. These results provide insights into design of advanced optical materials which can be applied in multilevel information handling and chiral sensing.

Purely Organic Microparticles Showing Ultralong Room Temperature Phosphorescence.

Project description:Currently, organic phosphorescent particles are heavily used in sensing and imaging. Up to now, most of these particles contain poisonous and/or expensive metal complexes. Environmentally friendly systems are therefore highly desired. A purely amorphous system consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate) particles with incorporated N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzidine emitter molecules is presented in this work. Single particles with sizes between 400 and 840 nm show-depending on the environment-bright fluorescence and phosphorescence. The latter is observed when oxygen is not in the proximity of the emitting dye molecules. These particles can scavenge singlet oxygen, which is produced during the photoexcitation process, by incorporating it into the polymer matrix. This renders their use to be unharmful for the surrounding matter with possible application in marking schemes for living bodies.

Project description:We describe the red phosphorescence exhibited by a class of structurally simple benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazoles at room temperature. The photophysical properties of these molecules in deoxygenated cyclohexane, including their absorption spectra, steady-state photoluminescence and excitation spectra, and phosphorescence lifetimes, are presented. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations were carried out to better understand the electronic excited states of these benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazoles and why they are capable of phosphorescence.
