Floating ZnO QDs-Modified TiO2/LLDPE Hybrid Polymer Film for the Effective Photodegradation of Tetracycline under Fluorescent Light Irradiation: Synthesis and Characterisation.

ABSTRACT: In this work, mesoporous TiO2-modified ZnO quantum dots (QDs) were immobilised on a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) polymer using a solution casting method for the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics under fluorescent light irradiation. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of the floating hybrid polymer film catalyst (8%-ZT@LLDPE). The highest removal (89.5%) of TC (40 mg/L) was achieved within 90 min at pH 9 due to enhanced water uptake by the LDDPE film and the surface roughness of the hybrid film. The formation of heterojunctions increased the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The QDs size-dependent quantum confinement effect leads to the displacement of the conduction band potential of ZnO QDs to more negative energy values than TiO2. The displacement generates more reactive species with higher oxidation ability. The highly stable film photocatalyst can be separated easily and can be repeatedly used up to 8 cycles without significant loss in the photocatalytic ability. The scavenging test indicates that the main species responsible for the photodegradation was O2●-. The proposed photodegradation mechanism of TC was demonstrated in further detail based on the intermediates detected by LC-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (LC/TOF-MS).

Project description:Plasmonic-enhanced photocatalysis using visible light is considered a promising strategy for pollution photodegradation. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive and quantitative understanding of the underlying mechanisms and interactions involved. In this study, we employed a two-step process to fabricate arrays of ZnO nanosheets decorated with Au nanoparticles (Au-ZnO NS). Various characterization techniques were used to examine the morphological, structural, and chemical properties of the fabricated Au-ZnO NS array. Furthermore, we systematically investigated the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation using Au-ZnO NS arrays prepared with varying numbers of photochemical reduction cycles. The results indicated that as the number of photochemical reduction cycles increased, the photodegradation efficiency initially increased but subsequently decreased. Under visible light irradiation, the Au-ZnO NS array obtained via four cycles of photochemical reduction exhibits the highest photocatalytic degradation rate of methyl orange 0.00926 min-1, which is six times higher than that of the ZnO NS array. To gain a better understanding of the plasmonic effect on photodegradation performance, we utilized electromagnetic simulations to quantitatively investigate the enhancement of electric fields in the Au-ZnO NS array. The simulations clearly presented the nonlinear dependencies of electric field intensity on the distribution of Au nanoparticles and the wavelength of radiation light, leading to a nonlinear enhancement of hot electron injection and eventual plasmonic photodegradation. The simulated model, corresponding to four cycles of photochemical reduction, exhibits the highest electric field intensity at 550 nm, which can be attributed to its strong plasmonic effect. This work provides mechanistic insights into plasmonic photocatalysts for utilizing visible light and represents a promising strategy for the rational design of high-performance visible light photocatalysts.

Project description:We have blended MgO QDs with poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) thin films using solution-casting method. MgO QDs were doped at 5 wt %, 10 wt %, and 15 wt % in PMMA film and annealed for 02, 04, 06, 08, 10, 12, 14, 20, 24, and 28 h at 130 degree Celsius. We have comprehensively investigated the molecular-scale restructuring and morphological evolution of the composite films and have accounted for the reasons based on the observations made on chemical bonding, crystallinity, bandgap, Urbach energy, and fluorescence and Raman spectra. We observe that the film loses its overall crystallinity in the initial stages of annealing, which improves slightly owing to the temperature-induced limited diffusion of MgO QDs (sizes in the range of 7.0603-9.5647 nm). MgO QDs undergo coarsening at temperatures as low as 130 0C. The limited diffusion of MgO QDs allows for the formation of larger clusters, which in turn affects the local crystallinity of the composite films. We report local-scale re-crystallization driven by dispersion forces acting globally. As far as the quantum nature of forces is concerned, this work clearly demonstrates some unique energy dissipation mechanism of charge carriers in QDs via overlapping with long-range dispersion forces. The morphological evolution of the films is the outcome of the reconciliation of forces. We discuss the role of competing forces. The evolution of nano-micro scale structures inside films is governed by the reconciliation between inter- and intra-molecular forces. The temperature of the film plays an important role in facilitating the entire process. To obtain molecular-scale insights, we have estimated the crystallinity, bandgap, and Urbach energy of the pure and hybrid films. MgO QDs diffuse locally and coalesced to form larger spherical clusters. The anchoring of MgO QDs on the PMMA surface and vice-versa appears to provide thermal stability and mechanical strength to the nanocomposite films, as the MgO QDS-doped PMMA film form nanometer-sized particulates of PMMA. In contrast, the overall crystallinity of the hybrid film drastically decreases as the formation of boundaries, interfaces, and voids overwhelmed the entire process. The formation of larger nanoaggregates at later stages of annealing slightly improves the crystallinity of the films. The estimation of the bandgap and Urbach energy calculations confirm the same. The micro-level phenomenological understanding of the diffusion process of nanodots in a nearly solid film is technically important for ensuring the sustainability of such nanocomposites that undergo a heating process.

Project description:A comprehensive in vitro assessment of two commercial metal oxide nanoparticles, TiO2 and ZnO, was performed using human monocyte-derived macrophages (HMDM), monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MDDC), and T cell leukemia-derived cell line (Jurkat). TiO2 nanoparticles were found to be non-toxic whereas ZnO nanoparticles caused dose-dependent cell death. Subsequently, global gene expression profiling was performed to identify signaling pathways underlying the cytotoxicity caused by ZnO nanoparticles. Analysis was done with doses, 1ug/ml and 10ug/ml after 6 and 24 hours of exposure. Interestingly, 2703 genes were significantly differentially expressed in HMDM upon exposure to 10ug/ml ZnO nanoparticles, while in MDDCs only 12 genes were affected. In Jurkat cells, 980 genes were differentially expressed. It is noteworthy that the gene expression of metallothioneins was upregulated in all the three cell types. In addition to the common ZnO-inducible changes, a notable proportion of the genes were regulated in a cell type-specific manner. Using a panel of ZnO nanoparticles, we obtained an additional support that the cellular response to ZnO nanoparticles is caused by particle dissolution. Gene ontology analysis revealed that the top biological processes disturbed in HMDM and Jurkat cells were regulating cell death and growth. In addition, genes controlling immune system development were affected. Bioinformatics assessment showed that the top human disease category associated with ZnO-responsive genes in both HMDM and Jurkat cells was cancer. Overall, the study revealed novel genes and pathways for mediating ZnO nanoparticle-induced toxicity and demonstrated the value of assessing nanoparticle responses through combined transcriptomics and bioinformatics approach. Nanoparticles used in the study: ZnO-1 commercial (IBU-tec advanced materials AG), ZnO-2 (mandelic acid coated ZnO-1), ZnO-3 (mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane coated ZnO-1), ZnO-4 (methoxyl coated ZnO), ZnO-5 (diethylene glycol modified ZnO) and ZnO-9 (folic acid modified ZnO).
