Polish High School Students' Knowledge about Cancer.

ABSTRACT: Cancer, as the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases, is a global health problem. There is still an increasing number of cancer incidences and deaths. The study was conducted as a part of the health promotion educational project concerning oncological education to develop the knowledge of cancer risk factors among high school students in Poland. A special questionnaire was filled out by students before the educational lesson on cancer conducted by medical students and young doctors. The study was carried out on 227 high school students (aged 17-18 years). Most students (67.5%) indicated that genetic predisposition is the most important cancer risk factor. Only about a quarter of students pointed to the relationship between lifestyle and cancer. Moreover, 41% of students admitted to smoking cigarettes. Most of them (80.6%) claimed that they can modify their own cancer risk. Almost all responders believed that early detected cancer is curable. High school students do not know about cancer risk factors and they do not relate cancer with lifestyle. Some students indicated bad lifestyle habits such as tobacco smoking. It is necessary to emphasize cancer prevention in early education, especially focusing on modification of lifestyle.

Project description:ObjectivesAlthough cancer is seen in every state in the United States, it does not affect every geographic area and population equally. Kentucky has the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in the country, with an unusually high number of cases localized in its Appalachian region. Risk factors such as sun exposure, tobacco use, poor diet/exercise, poverty, and lack of access to healthcare centers contribute to this disparity. Because education levels in the area are low, cancer literacy (defined as how well a person can understand the advice of a healthcare professional and make appropriate lifestyle decisions) also is low. In this study, we examined the short-term and long-term effects of a brief cancer-related intervention on the cancer literacy of Kentucky middle and high school students.MethodsThis study targeted middle and high school students in Kentucky. We administered an online 10-item cancer literacy pretest, followed by a brief educational intervention and a posttest to 164 students at six Kentucky middle and high schools. This posttest also included questions asking how likely students would be to change their habits or to encourage others to change their habits as a result of the intervention. All of the participating students also were sent a 3-month follow-up online survey with items identical to the pretest; 48 students completed the 3-month follow-up test, leading to a response rate of 29.2%. The data were summarized as frequencies, averages, median, and confidence intervals (CIs) of correctly marked answers. A paired t test was used to test for significance.ResultsWe observed an increase in the overall average test score from 50.2% (95% CI 47.8%-52.6%) on the pretest to 77.1% (95% CI 74.6%-79.7%) on the posttest immediately following the intervention. There also was an increase in the average number of correct responses on each item. The 3-month follow-up test similarly showed average test score improvement (75.4%). When asked how likely students would be to change their habits as a result of the intervention on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 = extremely unlikely, 10 = extremely likely), the median was 6. When asked how likely students would be to encourage another to change their habits, the median was an 8.ConclusionsThese results provide evidence that a brief educational intervention can increase cancer literacy, improve cancer knowledge retention, and encourage behavior change in Appalachian Kentucky students. Increasing cancer literacy may result in increased participation in preventive cancer screenings and improved health habits, which could ultimately lower cancer rates in the region.

Project description:BackgroundSleep disorders are common in high school students. Despite the growing global attention to adolescent sleep issues, limited research has focused on the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of high school students toward sleep disorders in China, where academic pressure is particularly high. This study addresses this gap by exploring the KAP of Chinese high school students toward sleep disorders, providing insights for targeted educational interventions.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted at six schools between November 10, 2023, and December 20, 2023. Demographic characteristics, the Self-Rating Scale of Sleep (SRSS), and the KAP scores of the participants were collected using a self-administered questionnaire.ResultsA total of 800 valid questionnaires were collected. The mean scores for the SRSS were 23.51 ± 6.18 (possible range: 10-50), for knowledge were 10.00 ± 4.84 (possible range: 0-18), for attitude were 35.53 ± 4.23 (possible range:9-45), and for practice were 28.85 ± 6.29 (possible range:8-40), respectively. The structural equation modeling (SEM) model demonstrated that sleep quality directly influenced knowledge (β = -0.154, p < 0.001), attitude (β = -0.169, p < 0.001), and practice (β = -0.356, p < 0.001). Knowledge also had a direct effect on attitude (β = 0.216, p < 0.001) and practice (β = 0.394, p < 0.001), and attitude directly affected practice (β = 0.141, p = 0.042).ConclusionsThis study highlights significant knowledge gaps about sleep disorders among Chinese high school students, which could hinder their ability to manage these issues effectively. By focusing on this unique population under substantial academic pressure, the findings underscore the urgent need for tailored educational programs to promote better sleep habits and overall well-being. Educational interventions that enhance knowledge about sleep disorders should be implemented in high school curricula to bridge these gaps and improve sleep-related outcomes.

Project description:ObjectiveTo investigate whether later high school start time is associated with lower migraine frequency in high school students with migraine.BackgroundAdequate sleep is thought to be important in managing adolescent migraine. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends teenagers sleep ≥8 hours/night. Adolescents have a physiologically delayed sleep phase, going to bed, and waking later than children and adults. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) accordingly recommends high schools start no earlier than 8:30 AM.MethodsCross-sectional observational study of U.S. high schoolers with migraine. Participants were recruited nationally using social media. Respondents attending high schools starting at 8:30 AM or later were compared to those attending earlier start time schools. The primary outcome was headache days/month.ResultsTwo hundred and fifty-six subjects constituted the analysis set: 115 later group vs 141 earlier group. Age and sex did not differ. Mean (SD) self-reported headache days/month were 7 (5) vs 8 (7), respectively, (P = .985); mean difference (95% CI for the difference) was -0.8 (-2.3-0.7) days. Median (IQR) self-reported total hours of sleep/school night were: 5.6 (5.0-6.6) vs 5.6 (4.5-6.4), P = .058. Students attending later start time schools woke later (median [IQR] 6:38 AM [55 minutes] vs 6:09 AM [59 minutes], P < .0001) and left home later (median [IQR] 7:28 AM [28 minutes] vs 7:02 AM [60 minutes], P < .0001). Average commute time was also longer: 41 (21) minutes vs 28 (16), P < .0001. The vast majority in both groups reported missing breakfast at least once/week: 103/114 (90.4%) vs 128/141 (90.8%), P = .907. Hours of sleep did not correlate with headache days per month.ConclusionHigh school start time does not have a large effect on headache frequency in high schoolers with migraine. Given the high variance in headache days/month observed in this study, a larger study would be needed to determine whether there might still be a small effect of starting high school at/after 8:30 AM. More research is needed to establish evidence-based recommendations about lifestyle factors in adolescent migraine management.

Project description:There is an urgent need for generalized training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, starting with secondary education. Validated instruments for assessing the efficacy of such interventions are not yet available. This study aimed to validate an evaluation questionnaire of a CPR training program for high school students, to analyze the levels of readability, difficulty, reliability, and content validity, as well as the fit the purpose for which they were designed, the trait they are intended to measure. An instrumental study was conducted in 2 phases. In the first phase, an inter-judge validation was carried out with 11 experts in CPR accredited instructors of basic and advanced CPR by the American Heart Association. In the second phase, the psychometric properties were evaluated from the perspective of Item Response Theory. During May of the 2017/18 and 2018/19 academic years, 259 4th-year secondary school students from a high school in the southeastern area of the island of Gran Canaria (mean age: 15.78 years; 50.60% male) were surveyed anonymously using the questionnaire to be validated. The questionnaire was easily readable (74.12 Flesch-Szigriszt Index); the difficulty level (Easy/Very Easy) in the context of this secondary school level of education and the ability level of the respondents overlapped sufficiently and there was no gender bias. The questionnaire was able to discriminate between respondents of slightly more than 7 levels of expertise, from low knowledge of CPR to high knowledge of CPR (Separation Index 7.53). The model fit was excellent (infit = 1/outfit = 1.01). The content validity index was adequate. The separation index and reliability exceeded what was considered adequate for guaranteed use. The level of difficulty of the items and the level of ability of the respondents is in line with the educational level of the students. The questionnaire did not produce a gender bias in response probability. The questionnaire is easily understandable and can discriminate between different levels of ability without differential gender bias, and its reliability is outstanding, as it exceeds the minimum criteria.
