NanoChest-Net: A Simple Convolutional Network for Radiological Studies Classification.

ABSTRACT: The new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), pneumonia, tuberculosis, and breast cancer have one thing in common: these diseases can be diagnosed using radiological studies such as X-rays images. With radiological studies and technology, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) results in a very useful technique to analyze and detect abnormalities using the images generated by X-ray machines. Some deep-learning techniques such as a convolutional neural network (CNN) can help physicians to obtain an effective pre-diagnosis. However, popular CNNs are enormous models and need a huge amount of data to obtain good results. In this paper, we introduce NanoChest-net, which is a small but effective CNN model that can be used to classify among different diseases using images from radiological studies. NanoChest-net proves to be effective in classifying among different diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, and COVID-19. In two of the five datasets used in the experiments, NanoChest-net obtained the best results, while on the remaining datasets our model proved to be as good as baseline models from the state of the art such as the ResNet50, Xception, and DenseNet121. In addition, NanoChest-net is useful to classify radiological studies on the same level as state-of-the-art algorithms with the advantage that it does not require a large number of operations.

Project description:Visual place recognition (VPR) is the ability to recognize locations in a physical environment based only on visual inputs. It is a challenging task due to perceptual aliasing, viewpoint and appearance variations and complexity of dynamic scenes. Despite promising demonstrations, many state-of-the-art (SOTA) VPR approaches based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) suffer from computational inefficiency. However, spiking neural networks (SNNs) implemented on neuromorphic hardware are reported to have remarkable potential for more efficient solutions computationally. Still, training SOTA SNNs for VPR is often intractable on large and diverse datasets, and they typically demonstrate poor real-time operation performance. To address these shortcomings, we developed an end-to-end convolutional SNN model for VPR that leverages backpropagation for tractable training. Rate-based approximations of leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neurons are employed during training, which are then replaced with spiking LIF neurons during inference. The proposed method significantly outperforms existing SOTA SNNs on challenging datasets like Nordland and Oxford RobotCar, achieving 78.6% precision at 100% recall on the Nordland dataset (compared to 73.0% from the current SOTA) and 45.7% on the Oxford RobotCar dataset (compared to 20.2% from the current SOTA). Our approach offers a simpler training pipeline while yielding significant improvements in both training and inference times compared to SOTA SNNs for VPR. Hardware-in-the-loop tests using Intel's neuromorphic USB form factor, Kapoho Bay, show that our on-chip spiking models for VPR trained via the ANN-to-SNN conversion strategy continue to outperform their SNN counterparts, despite a slight but noticeable decrease in performance when transitioning from off-chip to on-chip, while offering significant energy efficiency. The results highlight the outstanding rapid prototyping and real-world deployment capabilities of this approach, showing it to be a substantial step toward more prevalent SNN-based real-world robotics solutions.

Project description:The Brain Tumor presents a highly critical situation concerning the brain, characterized by the uncontrolled growth of an abnormal cell cluster. Early brain tumor detection is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. In this paper, a novel Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based Graph Neural Network (GNN) model is proposed using the publicly available Brain Tumor dataset from Kaggle to predict whether a person has brain tumor or not and if yes then which type (Meningioma, Pituitary or Glioma). The objective of this research and the proposed models is to provide a solution to the non-consideration of non-Euclidean distances in image data and the inability of conventional models to learn on pixel similarity based upon the pixel proximity. To solve this problem, we have proposed a Graph based Convolutional Neural Network (GCNN) model and it is found that the proposed model solves the problem of considering non-Euclidean distances in images. We aimed at improving brain tumor detection and classification using a novel technique which combines GNN and a 26 layered CNN that takes in a Graph input pre-convolved using Graph Convolution operation. The objective of Graph Convolution is to modify the node features (data linked to each node) by combining information from nearby nodes. A standard pre-computed Adjacency matrix is used, and the input graphs were updated as the averaged sum of local neighbor nodes, which carry the regional information about the tumor. These modified graphs are given as the input matrices to a standard 26 layered CNN with Batch Normalization and Dropout layers intact. Five different networks namely Net-0, Net-1, Net-2, Net-3 and Net-4 are proposed, and it is found that Net-2 outperformed the other networks namely Net-0, Net-1, Net-3 and Net-4. The highest accuracy achieved was 95.01% by Net-2. With its current effectiveness, the model we propose represents a critical alternative for the statistical detection of brain tumors in patients who are suspected of having one.
