Auto-controlled fabrication of a metal-porphyrin framework thin film with tunable optical limiting effects.

ABSTRACT: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are still in their infancy but are very important. In this work, we first develop a layer by layer autoarm immersion method for preparing porphyrin-based MOF (PIZA-1) thin films with third-order NLO properties. By precisely controlling the thickness, the nonlinear absorption of PIZA-1 thin films can be switched continuously between reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and saturable absorption (SA) by using the Z-scan technique. In addition, the optical limiting effect could be further optimized by loading C₆₀ in the pores of the PIZA-1 thin film. These findings not only open a new route for the exploitation of third-order NLO thin film materials, but also offer an insightful understanding of porphyrin-based MOF thin films for future broad practical applications.

Comparison of Fabrication Methods of Metal-Organic Framework Optical Thin Films.

Project description:Homogeneous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based optical thin films have attracted increasing attention, since they can potentially be used as active components in optical/opt-electrical devices, and how to fabricate MOF thin films with high quality is the premise of practically using them. Herein, five fabrication methods of MOF films are systematically investigated and compared from the aspects of appearance, reflectivity, micro-morphology, surface roughness, and optical properties of the films. The famous robust Zr-based MOF, UiO-66 (UiO = University of Oslo) is chosen as a model, and the five methods are spin-coating, dip-coating, self-assembly, direct growth, and the stepwise layer by layer growth method. This study provides fundamental support for the application of MOFs in the optical field.

Oriented Growth of In-Oxo Chain Based Metal-Porphyrin Framework Thin Film for High-Sensitive Photodetector.

Project description:The potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for applications in optoelectronics results from a unique combination of interesting photophysical properties and straightforward tunability of organic and inorganic units. Here, it is demonstrated that using MOF approach chromophores can be assembled into well-ordered 1D arrays using metal-oxo strands as lead structure, and the resulting porphyrinic rows exhibit unique photophysical properties and allow the realization of highly sensitive photodetectors. A porphyrinic MOF thin film, In-TCPP surface-coordinated MOF thin films with [021] orientation is fabricated using a layer-by-layer method, from In(NO3)3 and TCPP (5,10,15,20-(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin). Detailed experimental and theoretical analysis reveals that the assembly yields a structure where In-oxo strands running parallel to the substrate fix the chromophoric linkers to yield 1D arrays of porphyrins. The frontier orbitals of this highly anisotropic arrangement are localized in these columnar arrangements of porphyrins and result in high photoactivity, which is exploited to fabricate a photodetector with record (as compared to other organic materials) responsivity in visible regime of 7.28 × 1014 Jones and short rise/fall times (0.07/0.04 s). This oriented MOF thin film-based high-sensitive photodetector provides a new avenue to use inorganic, stable lead structures to assemble organic semiconductors into regular arrays, thus creating a huge potential for the fabrication of optoelectronic devices.

pH-Responsive Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film for Drug Delivery.

Project description:In this work, surface-supportive MIL-88B(Fe) was explored as a pH-stimuli thin film to release ibuprofen as a model drug. We used surface plasmon resonance microscopy to study the pH-responsive behaviors of MIL-88B(Fe) film in real time. A dissociation constant of (6.10 ± 0.86) × 10-3 s-1 was measured for the MIL-88B(Fe) film in an acidic condition (pH 6.3), which is about 10 times higher than the dissociation of the same film in a neutral pH condition. MIL-88B(Fe) films are also capable of loading around 6.0 μg/cm2 of ibuprofen, which was measured using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Drug release profiles were compared in both acidic and neutral pH conditions (pH 6.3 and 7.4) using a QCM cell to model the drug release in healthy body systems and those containing inflammatory tissues or cancerous tumors. It was found that the amount of drug released in acidic environments had been significantly higher compared to that in a neutral system within 55 h of testing time. The pH-sensitive chemical bond breaking between Fe3+ and the carboxylate ligands is the leading cause of drug release in acidic conditions. This work exhibits the potential of using MOF thin films as pH-triggered drug delivery systems.

ZnO thin film-nanowire array homo-structures with tunable photoluminescence and optical band gap.

Project description:The growth and optical behavior of ZnO thin film-nanowire array homo-structures is reported. The ZnO films are deposited on glass substrates by thermal evaporation and subjected to heat treatment at 400 °C for 2 h to achieve crystallinity and stoichiometry. The surface comprises spherical grains or elongated flakes depending on thickness of films. These films are introduced in to a hydrothermal reactor in a medium of zinc acetate and HMTA to realize the nanostructures. The process results in the formation of ZnO nanowires with dimensions that are strongly dependent on the surface microstructure of the ZnO films. The role of temperature (90-180 °C) and duration (10 min to 10 h) of hydrothermal processing is investigated in detail. It is demonstrated that low temperature and short duration are ideal for producing nanowires with diameter < 100 nm, while longer durations and higher temperatures lead to large diameter and long length nanowires. Interestingly, all wires converge to a hexagonal shape with increase in duration or temperature. The lowest diameter of the vertically aligned nanowires is 50 nm and length upto 10 μm is achieved. Optical band gap of the homo-structures is of the order of 3.4-3.5 eV. Raman and photoluminescence spectra indicate the presence of defects in the films. The thin films exhibit a strong defect related photoluminescence peak centred around 550 nm. The nanowires grown on the films display both the UV-near band edge peak as well as the defect related peak. However, the intensity of the defect peak decreases with increase in length of the nanowires indicating that the photoluminescence of the homo-structures can be tuned by changing the surface microstructure of the films and also the aspect ratio of the nanowires.

Gd Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film for On-Chip Local Magnetic Refrigeration.

Project description:Dense metal-organic frameworks with high spin paramagnetic nodes are competitive materials for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration, particularly in applications for which local cooling is advantageous. We focus on obtaining thin films of gadolinium formate, which has a large volumetric magnetocaloric effect. Continuous and homogeneous deposits of gadolinium formate are successfully formed on silicon by means of aerosol jet printing, with control over the film thickness from 0.35 μm up to 2.5 μm. The excellent cooling power of the deposits is evidenced via direct measurements of the cooling of a 200 μm silicon wafer down to sub-K temperatures by a single demagnetization from 1 T and 2 K, thereby demonstrating the potential of this approach for on-chip local magnetic refrigeration.

Iron-containing metal-organic framework thin film as a drug delivery system.

Project description:Selective bulk metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited great potential in biomedical applications. However, topical treatments and drug elution coatings will require uniform films as drug delivery systems. This work studies the use of surface supportive MOF thin films for drug loading and releasing. More specifically, we focus on an iron-containing MOF, MIL-88B(Fe), on a COOH-terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified Au surface for encapsulating ibuprofen as a model drug. A combined experimental and computational approach was employed to study the fabrication of MIL-88B(Fe) film on functionalized Au surfaces. We used several surface characterization techniques, including infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, to confirm the chemical composition and morphological changes of the surface after each modification step. The resulting MIL-88B(Fe) thin film was found capable of loading 8.7 wt% of ibuprofen using quartz crystal microbalance analysis. Moreover, we applied cluster simulations to study the binding mechanisms of MIL-88B(Fe) and its interactions with ibuprofen based on the density functional theory (DFT). The unsaturated Fe site was confirmed kinetically more favorable to bind to the COOH-end group on the SAM. Hydrogen bonding and π-CH interactions between ibuprofen and MIL-88B(Fe) promote ibuprofen being retained inside of the cages of MIL-88B(Fe).

Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from a Cobaloxime-Based Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film.

Project description:Molecular hydrogen evolution catalysts (HECs) are synthetically tunable and often exhibit high activity, but they are also hampered by stability concerns and practical limitations associated with their use in the homogeneous phase. Their incorporation as integral linker units in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can remedy these shortcomings. Moreover, the extended three-dimensional structure of MOFs gives rise to high catalyst loadings per geometric surface area. Herein, we report a new MOF that exclusively consists of cobaloximes, a widely studied HEC, that act as metallo-linkers between hexanuclear zirconium clusters. When grown on conducting substrates and under applied reductive potential, the cobaloxime linkers promote electron transport through the film as well as function as molecular HECs. The obtained turnover numbers are orders of magnitude higher than those of any other comparable cobaloxime system, and the molecular integrity of the cobaloxime catalysts is maintained for at least 18 h of electrocatalysis. Being one of the very few hydrogen evolving electrocatalytic MOFs based on a redox-active metallo-linker, this work explores uncharted terrain for greater catalyst diversity and charge transport pathways.

Metal⁻Organic Framework Thin Film-Based Dye Sensitized Solar Cells with Enhanced Photocurrent.

Project description:Metal⁻organic framework thin film-based dye sensitized solar cell is fabricated with highly oriented, crystalline, and porous Zn-perylene metal-organic framework (MOF) thin film (SURMOF) which is integrated with Bodipy embedded in poly(methyl methacrylate). It has been demonstrated that the photocurrent can be enhanced by a factor of 5 relative to Zn-perylene MOF thin film due to triplet⁻triplet annihilation up-conversion between the Bodipy/PMMA sensitizer and the Zn-perylene MOF thin film acceptor using Co(bpy)₃2+/3+ as redox mediator.

Metallic Effects on p-Hydroxyphenyl Porphyrin Thin-Film-Based Planar Optical Waveguide Gas Sensor: Experimental and Computational Studies.

Project description:Metal effects on the gas sensing behavior of metal complexes of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (THPP) thin film was investigated in terms of detecting NO2 gas by the planar optical waveguide. For this purpose, several THPP and metal complexes were synthesized with different central metal ions: Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II). Planar optical gas sensors were fabricated with the metalloporphyrins deposited on K+ ion-exchanged soda-lime glass substrate with the spin coating method serving as host matrices for gas interaction. All of the THPP complex's films were fully characterized by UV-Vis, IR and XPS spectroscopy, and the laser light source wavelength was selected at 520 and 670 nm. The results of the planar optical waveguide sensor show that the Zn-THPP complex exhibits the strongest response with the lowest detectable gas concentration of NO2 gas for both 520 nm and 670 nm. The Ni-THPP and Co-THPP complexes display good efficiency in the detection of NO2, while, on the other hand, Cu-THPP shows a very low interaction with NO2 gas, with only 50 ppm and 200 ppm detectable gas concentration for 520 nm and 670 nm, respectively. In addition, molecular dynamic simulations and quantum mechanical calculations were performed, proving to be coherent with the experimental results.

Liquid Metal Grid Patterned Thin Film Devices Toward Absorption-Dominant and Strain-Tunable Electromagnetic Interference Shielding.

Project description:The demand of high-performance thin-film-shaped deformable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding devices is increasing for the next generation of wearable and miniaturized soft electronics. Although highly reflective conductive materials can effectively shield EMI, they prevent deformation of the devices owing to rigidity and generate secondary electromagnetic pollution simultaneously. Herein, soft and stretchable EMI shielding thin film devices with absorption-dominant EMI shielding behavior is presented. The devices consist of liquid metal (LM) layer and LM grid-patterned layer separated by a thin elastomeric film, fabricated by leveraging superior adhesion of aerosol-deposited LM on elastomer. The devices demonstrate high electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (SE) (SET of up to 75 dB) with low reflectance (SER of 1.5 dB at the resonant frequency) owing to EMI absorption induced by multiple internal reflection generated in the LM grid architectures. Remarkably, the excellent stretchability of the LM-based devices facilitates tunable EMI shielding abilities through grid space adjustment upon strain (resonant frequency shift from 81.3 to 71.3 GHz @ 33% strain) and is also capable of retaining shielding effectiveness even after multiple strain cycles. This newly explored device presents an advanced paradigm for powerful EMI shielding performance for next-generation smart electronics.
