Exploring Community-Based Options for Reducing Youth Crime.

ABSTRACT: BackTrack is a multi-component, community-based intervention designed to build capacity amongst 14-17-year-old high risk young people. The aim of the current study seeks to explore community value and preferences for reducing youth crime and improving community safety using BackTrack in a rural setting in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. The study design used discrete choice experiments (DCEs), designed in accordance with the 10-item checklist outlined by the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. The DCE was pilot tested on 43 participants to test feasibility and comprehension. A revised version of the survey was subsequently completed by 282 people over a 12-day period between 30 May 2016 and 10 June 2016, representing a survey response rate of 35%. Ninety per cent of respondents were residents of Armidale, the local rural town where BackTrack was implemented. The DCE generated results that consistently demonstrated a preference for social programs to address youth crime and community safety in the Armidale area. Respondents chose BackTrack over Greater Police Presence 75% of the time with an annual benefit of Australian dollars (AUD) 150 per household, equivalent to a community benefit of AUD 2.04 million. This study estimates a strong community preference for BackTrack relative to more policing (a community willing to pay equivalent to AUD 2.04 million) highlighting the clear value of including community preferences when evaluating community-based programs for high-risk young people.

Project description:Formal community-based youth mentoring relationships (CBM) are a popular form of intervention worldwide in which caring, non-parental adult figures are matched with at-risk children (i.e., children who experience an intense and/or chronic risk factor, or a combination of risk factors in personal, environmental and/or relational domains that prevent them from pursuing and fulfilling their potential) to promote development and health. Common models suggest that a close mentoring relationship is needed for the success of the intervention. However, it remains unclear which key relational processes and variables promote relationship quality to generate the most significant benefits. Using the PRISMA framework, 123 articles were identified as relevant for this review which explores the state of the literature on CBM relationships describing the main findings regarding the characteristics of the relationship and the mediating and moderating variables. An essential ingredient that consistently emerged for generating mentoring outcomes is characterized by feelings of support, sensitivity, and trust and accompanied by a purposeful approach to shaping the goals of the relationship. A balanced approach comprised of recreational, emotional, and catalyzing aspects has been reported as essential for mentoring success. Mentors' positive attitudes toward underprivileged youth, maturity in terms of age and experience are essential in forging positive relationships. Mentees who have better relational histories and more positive personality traits exhibited higher relationship quality. However, data imply the possibility of addressing mentees from moderate risk status. Preliminary evidence on thriving as a mediating variable was found. Program practices, such as training, parental involvement, and matching based on perceived similarities and similar interests, emerged as important factors. Generating many research suggestions, the review identifies research questions and uncharted territories that require inquiry.

Project description:People with spasticity, i.e., stretch hyperreflexia, have a limited functional independence and mobility. While a broad range of spasticity treatments is available, many treatments are invasive, non-specific, or temporary and might have negative side effects. Operant conditioning of the stretch reflex is a promising non-invasive paradigm with potential long-term sustained effects. Within this conditioning paradigm, seated participants have to reduce the mechanically elicited reflex response using biofeedback of reflex magnitude quantified using electromyography (EMG). Before clinical application of the conditioning paradigm, improvements are needed regarding the time-intensiveness and slow learning curve. Previous studies have shown that gamification of biofeedback can improve participant motivation and long-term engagement. Moreover, quantification of reflex magnitude for biofeedback using reflexive joint impedance may obtain similar effectiveness within fewer sessions. Nine healthy volunteers participated in the study, split in three groups. First, as a reference the "Conventional" group received EMG- and bar-based biofeedback similar to previous research. Second, we explored feasibility of game-based biofeedback with the "Gaming" group receiving EMG- and game-based biofeedback. Third, we explored feasibility of game- and impedance-based biofeedback with the "Impedance" group receiving impedance and game-based biofeedback. Participants completed five baseline sessions (without reflex biofeedback) and six conditioning sessions (with reflex biofeedback). Participants were instructed to reduce reflex magnitude without modulating background activity. The Conventional and Gaming groups showed feasibility of the protocol in 2 and 3 out of 3 participants, respectively. These participants achieved a significant Soleus short-latency (M1) within-session reduction in at least -15% in the 4th-6th conditioning session. None of the Impedance group participants showed any within-session decrease in Soleus reflex magnitude. The feasibility in the EMG- and game-based biofeedback calls for further research on gamification of the conditioning paradigm to obtain improved participant motivation and engagement, while achieving long-term conditioning effects. Before clinical application, the time-intensiveness and slow learning curve of the conditioning paradigm remain an open challenge.
