Utility of Three-Coordinate Silver Complexes Toward the Formation of Iodonium Ions.

ABSTRACT: The work herein describes the synthesis of five three-coordinate silver(I) complexes comprising a bidentate ligand L1, either bpy (2,2'-bipyridyl) or bpyMe₂ (4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-dipyridyl), and a monodentate ligand L2, either mtz (1-methyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole), 4-Etpy (4-ethylpyridine), or 4-DMAP (N,N-dimethylpyridin-4-amine). Upon reaction of the three-coordinate silver(I) complexes with 0.5 equiv of I₂, the reactions quantitatively produce a 1:1 pair of complexes of a four-coordinate silver(I) complex [Ag(L1)₂]PF₆ and a two-coordinate iodonium complex [I(L2)₂]PF₆. The combination of [Ag(bpyMe₂)₂]PF₆ and [I(4-DMAP)₂]PF₆ gave rise to an I⁺···Ag⁺ interaction where the I⁺ acts as a nucleophile, only the second example of which, that was observed in both the solution (NMR) and solid (X-ray) states.

Project description:Five new crystalline gold(I) complexes β-Au2(μ-dppm)2Br2·2CH2Cl2 (1), [Au2(μ- dppm)2Br]Br·2CH2Cl2 (2), [Au2(μ-dppm)2Br](PF6) (3), [Au2(μ-dppm)2Cl](BPh4)·3CH2Cl2 (4) and [Au2(μ-dppm)2]Cl(AsF6)·2CH2Cl2 (5) (where dppm is bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) have been prepared and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Colorless β-Au2(μ-dppm)2Br2·2CH2Cl2 (1) has centrosymmetric structure with two three-coordinate gold(I) ions held in close proximity by the dppm ligands. Crystals of [Au2(μ- dppm)2Br]Br·2CH2Cl2 (2), [Au2(μ-dppm)2Br](PF6) (3), and [Au2(μ-dppm)2Cl](BPh4)·3CH2Cl2 (4) have a cation with an unusual arrangement that binds a two-coordinate gold(I) ion to a three-coordinate gold(I) ion through an aurophilic interaction. Whereas Au2(μ-dppm)2Cl(BPh4)·3CH2Cl2 (4) has a chloride ion bound to only one of the gold ions in the complex, [Au2(μ-dppm)2]Cl(AsF6)·2CH2Cl2 (5) has an ion paired chloride ion that is symmetrically disposed between the two gold ions at a rather long distance. Each complex displays luminescence under UV irradiation.

Three-coordinate terminal imidoiron(III) complexes: structure, spectroscopy, and mechanism of formation.

Project description:Reaction of 1-adamantyl azide with iron(I) diketiminate precursors gives metastable but isolable imidoiron(III) complexes LFe=NAd (L = bulky beta-diketiminate ligand; Ad = 1-adamantyl). This paper addresses (1) the spectroscopic and structural characterization of the Fe=N multiple bond in these interesting three-coordinate iron imido complexes, and (2) the mechanism through which the imido complexes form. The iron(III) imido complexes have been examined by (1)H NMR and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies and temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility (SQUID), and structurally characterized by crystallography and/or extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements. These data show that the imido complexes have quartet ground states and short (1.68 +/- 0.01 A) iron-nitrogen bonds. The formation of the imido complexes proceeds through unobserved iron-N(3)R intermediates, which are indicated by QM/MM computations to be best described as iron(II) with an N(3)R radical anion. The radical character on the organoazide bends its NNN linkage to enable easy N(2) loss and imido complex formation. The product distribution between imidoiron(III) products and hexazene-bridged diiron(II) products is solvent-dependent, and the solvent dependence can be explained by coordination of certain solvents to the iron(I) precursor prior to interaction with the organoazide.

Three-coordinate and four-coordinate cobalt hydride complexes that react with dinitrogen.

Project description:We report the formation and N(2) reactivity of novel cobalt hydride complexes supported by bulky beta-diketiminate ligands (L). Addition of KHBEt(3) to LCoCl gives [LCo(mu-H)](2) (1) or K(2)[LCoH](2) (2), depending on the amount of borohydride used. Compound 2 is the first example of a crystallographically characterized hydride complex in which a transition metal is three-coordinate. Both 1 and 2 react with N(2) at room temperature to give dinuclear N(2) complexes with loss of H(2).

Three-coordinate copper(I) amido and aminyl radical complexes.

Project description:A three-coordinate Cu-NR(2) system (R = p-tolyl) supported by the anionic bis(phosphino)borate ligand [Ph(2)B(CH(2)P(t)Bu(2))(2)](-) has been isolated and structurally characterized in both its anionic Cu(I) and neutral (formally) Cu(II) oxidation states. A large rate constant for the self-exchange electron-transfer reaction (k(S) >or= 10(7) M(-1) s(-1)) makes this system a functional model for the type-1 active sites in blue copper proteins. Multiedge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, multifrequency electron paramagnetic resonance, and density functional theory analyses collectively indicate that the oxidized form is best regarded as a Cu(I)-aminyl radical complex rather than a Cu(II)-amido species, with about 70% localization of the unpaired electron on the NR(2) unit. Hydrogen-atom transfer and C-C coupling reactions are presented as examples of chemical reactivity manifested by this unusual electronic structure.

Synthesis and characterization of three-coordinate Ni(III)-imide complexes.

Project description:A new family of low-coordinate nickel imides supported by 1,2-bis(di-tert-butylphosphino)ethane was synthesized. Oxidation of nickel(II) complexes led to the formation of both aryl- and alkyl-substituted nickel(III)-imides, and examples of both types have been isolated and fully characterized. The aryl substituent that proved most useful in stabilizing the Ni(III)-imide moiety was the bulky 2,6-dimesitylphenyl. The two Ni(III)-imide compounds showed different variable-temperature magnetic properties but analogous EPR spectra at low temperatures. To account for this discrepancy, a low-spin/high-spin equilibrium was proposed to take place for the alkyl-substituted Ni(III)-imide complex. This proposal was supported by DFT calculations. DFT calculations also indicated that the unpaired electron is mostly localized on the imide nitrogen for the Ni(III) complexes. The results of reactions carried out in the presence of hydrogen donors supported the findings from DFT calculations that the adamantyl substituent was a significantly more reactive hydrogen-atom abstractor. Interestingly, the steric properties of the 2,6-dimesitylphenyl substituent are important not only in protecting the Ni═N core but also in favoring one rotamer of the resulting Ni(III)-imide, by locking the phenyl ring in a perpendicular orientation with respect to the NiPP plane.

Ligand dependence of binding to three-coordinate Fe(II) complexes.

Project description:A series of three- and four-coordinate iron(II) complexes with nitrogen, chlorine, oxygen, and sulfur ligands is presented. The electronic variation is explored by measuring the association constant of the neutral ligands and the reduction potential of the iron(II) complexes. Varying the neutral ligand gives large changes in K(eq), which decrease in the order CN(t)Bu > pyridine >2-picoline > DMF > MeCN > THF > PPh(3). These differences can be attributed to a mixture of steric effects and electronic effects (both sigma-donation and pi-backbonding). The binding constants and the reduction potentials are surprisingly insensitive to changes in an anionic spectator ligand. This suggests that three-coordinate iron(II) complexes may have similar binding trends as proposed three-coordinate iron(II) intermediates in the FeMoco of nitrogenase, even though the anionic spectator ligands in the synthetic complexes differ from the sulfides in the FeMoco.

Observation of the single-ion magnet behavior of d8 ions on two-coordinate Co(i)-NHC complexes.

Project description:The slow magnetic relaxation typical for single-ion magnets has been known for certain low-coordinate 3d metal complexes with d6, d7, and d9 electronic configurations, but never for d8 complexes. Herein, we report a study on two-coordinate d8 cobalt(i)-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes, for which slow magnetic relaxation behavior was observed for [Co(IMes)2][BPh4] (IMes: 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene) under an applied dc field. The system represents the first d8 single-ion magnet, and features a fitted energy barrier of Ueff = 21.3 cm-1 and pre-exponential factor of τ0 = 6.6 × 10-6 s. The analog two-coordinate cobalt(i) complexes with different NHC ligands, [Co(sIMes)2][BPh4] (sIMes: 1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene) and [Co(IAd)2][BArF4] (IAd: 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene; BArF4: tetra(3,5-ditrifluoromethylphenyl)borate), do not show such single-ion magnet behaviour. Ab initio calculations imply that the dihedral angle between the two NHC planes and the degree of unsaturation of the NHC ligands can dramatically alter the D value of the two-coordinate cobalt(i)-NHC ions, possibly via changing of the Co-NHC π-interactions, and hence affect the spin-orbit coupling splitting.

Silver Ions Direct Twin-Plane Formation during the Overgrowth of Single-Crystal Gold Nanoparticles.

Project description:It is commonly agreed that the crystalline structure of seeds dictates the crystallinity of final nanoparticles in a seeded-growth process. Although the formation of monocrystalline particles does require the use of single-crystal seeds, twin planes may stem from either single- or polycrystalline seeds. However, experimental control over twin-plane formation remains difficult to achieve synthetically. Here, we show that a careful interplay between kinetics and selective surface passivation offers a unique handle over the emergence of twin planes (in decahedra and triangles) during the growth over single-crystalline gold nanoparticles of quasi-spherical shape. Twinning can be suppressed under conditions of slow kinetics in the presence of silver ions, yielding single-crystalline particles with high-index facets.

Highly Stable Silver(I) Complexes with Cyclen-Based Ligands Bearing Sulfide Arms: A Step Toward Silver-111 Labeled Radiopharmaceuticals.

Project description:With a half-life of 7.45 days, silver-111 (βmax 1.04 MeV, Eγ 245.4 keV [Iγ 1.24%], Eγ 342.1 keV [Iγ 6.7%]) is a promising candidate for targeted cancer therapy with β- emitters as well as for associated SPECT imaging. For its clinical use, the development of suitable ligands that form sufficiently stable Ag+-complexes in vivo is required. In this work, the following sulfur-containing derivatives of tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) have been considered as potential chelators for silver-111: 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO4S), (2S,5S,8S,11S)-2,5,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO4S4Me), 1,4,7-tris(2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO3S), 1,4,7-tris(2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl)-10-acetamido-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO3SAm), and 1,7-bis(2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl)-4,10,diacetic acid-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO2A2S). Natural Ag+ was used in pH/Ag-potentiometric and UV-vis spectrophotometric studies to determine the metal speciation existing in aqueous NaNO3 0.15 M at 25 °C and the equilibrium constants of the complexes, whereas NMR and DFT calculations gave structural insights. Overall results indicated that sulfide pendant arms coordinate Ag+ allowing the formation of very stable complexes, both at acidic and physiological pH. Furthermore, radiolabeling, stability in saline phosphate buffer, and metal-competition experiments using the two ligands forming the strongest complexes, DO4S and DO4S4Me, were carried out with [111Ag]Ag+ and promising results were obtained.

Changes in Arabidopsis thaliana gene expression in response to silver nanoparticles and silver ions

Project description:The release of silver nanoparticles (SNPs) in the environment has raised concerns about their effects on living organisms, including plants. In this study, changes in gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana exposed to SNPs and silver ions (Ag+) were analyzed using Affymetrix expression microarrays. Exposure to 5 mg SNPs L-1 (20 nm) for 10 days resulted in up-regulation of 286 genes and down-regulation of 81 genes by reference to non-exposed plants. Exposure to 5 mg Ag+ L-1 for 10 days resulted in up-regulation of 84 genes and down-regulation of 53 genes by reference to non-exposed plants. Many genes differentially expressed by SNPs and Ag+ were found to be involved in plant response to various stresses: up-regulated genes were primarily associated with response to metals and oxidative stress (e.g., vacuolar cation/proton exchanger, superoxide dismutase, cytochrome P-450-dependent oxidase, and peroxidase), while down-regulated genes were more associated with response to pathogens and hormonal stimuli (e.g., auxin-regulated gene involved in organ size (ARGOS), ethylene signaling pathway, and systemic acquired resistance (SAR) against fungi and bacteria). A significant overlap was observed between genes differentially expressed in response to SNPs and Ag+ (13% and 21% of total up- and down-regulated genes, respectively), suggesting that SNP-induced stress originates partly from silver toxicity and partly from nanoparticle-specific effects. Three highly up-regulated genes in the presence of SNPs, but not Ag+, belong to the thalianol biosynthetic pathway, which is thought to be involved in plant defense system. Results from this study provide insights into the molecular mechanisms of plant response to SNPs and Ag+.
